High speed/power enjoyment that the lotus is built for, the Miata.. well it speaks for itself I’d say, and the century well.. comfortable with a Toyota 12 cylinder? What more could you want

@Jimmy Two Times Well, yes and no. For many people the Elise or Exige, both incredible sports cars were absolutely undrivable because you had no room. No room for any part of your body and you were squashed in there. A car can be brilliant but that ruins it completely. I wonder if you can stretch your legs at all in this one because if you can't, you're better of with a Porsche who never fails to get that right. I hope Lotus got it right this time.
@@MyRealName right right.. please compare the size of an Elise to an emira. It is as wide as an X5… I’ve got one in my garage, I had one of the first orders in Germanyand I can assure you, that it is large and very comfortable enough for two people even above 6 feet. You have plenty of space for a two seater…
Saw you when you filmed this episode. Riding my bicycle on my regular loop through the Malibu canyons. That Emira caught my eyes immediately- total dream car for these tight canyons around here. Didn’t realize or recognized you in the green Emira in the moment, however, at home on TH-cam it all became clear. Nice episode, spot on commentary! And btw. ones you live here you won’t leave….. even only by owning a suspension tuned Miata NA and a Ducati Monster 1200, these roads are a drivers enthusiasts dream!!! 25plus years carving these fantastic canyon roads 😊
If we get a "Top Gear Special" hour or two-long video from you guys, I will be over the moon. That is EXACTLY the kind of content I've been craving since the Grand Tour slowed down. Can't wait to see what you guys have planned!
...nope, too long. 20 minutes or less is perfect, albiet this video was 22 minutes. TH's formula is just fine; I'd hate it ruined w/hour long episodes that I would play at 1.5x speed
@@K03sport Oh, don't get me wrong. I don't want them to REPLACE their current format with a longer one, but if they choose to do a "special" series with long roadtrips and stuff, I would be totally hooked.
I am looking forward to their special. I think James and Thomas work better. But if you have to have something like the Grand Tour, give Car Trek a try while we wait for Throttle House’s version.
I have legitimately watched this entire video start to finish 3 times now. This one brings me a specific type of joy that I can't really explain. Thanks for this one, Thomas & James :)
Same here!! There’s just something about watching someone spec their car and going over every little detail that all of us do even if we have no intention of buying it.
@@Jinsun202 Which you can partially thank Chris Evans for (as I consider "New Top Gear" as the format that started with Clarkson, Hammond and that chubby fella who gave used car advice). As Clarkson and Wilman wanted to make a car show with the atmosphere and irreverence of "Don't Forget Your Toothbrush" and "TFI Friday". The reboot and now Chris Harris, Paddy and Freddie versions still base their format off of it.
Wow, just wow. Not everyday I find myself with a new dream car! And that's coming from a Porsche fanboy... The shifter action through the mesh, the throttle in the rear-view, the beautiful styling, that green 👀, the ergonomics, powerful but relatively usable. Just perfect. Props to you guys at TH too for constantly putting out the best auto reviews on TH-cam! Keep it up :)
Man, Thomas said the steering is better than any Porsche! That's some serious recognition right there. TH has become the new Top Gear for me, with honest reviews, fun presentation, and great editing. The Emira's a tough choice against the C8, but its rarity, uniqueness, and looks make it stand out. James' taste in cars is spot on, and the engine sound is addictive! I've always really liked Lotus cars because of how unique they are, and what they represent, they are a drivers car. I love the styling on this model. Its gorgeous.
This car really shows how much the C8 & z06 have made it so much more challenging for cars like these. It's a tough choice between this and a c8, I personally would rather this just cause it'll be more rare, more unique. And I think looks way better imo, plus MANUAL :D
@@craigthescott5074 Fair but I don't think it sounds as good, and it's much more of a GT than a sports car. It also looks a little bit chintzy with how much it tries to look like an italian exotic, whereas this car looks exactly like a baby sports car.

Holy SHIT you guys. The production on these past few videos have been otherworldly. I am so happy you are financially able to do these things now, you've just CRUSHING it. The green on this Lotus is so great. Wow.
He's right though that when it's not in direct sunlight, it's really really dark. Lotus should have just made their traditional British Racing Green as the option.
I have been a car admirer since I was a little kid since my first love, a 78' stingray that reminded me of the Bat Mobile. Listening to James and Thomas talk about cars is well thought out and straight to the point. Everything is intelligent while dumbing down the simplest detail where everything matters. Thanks for the passion guys! It makes watching these videos enjoyable and I appreciate the perspectives
If I had to be sold on a car, this video would be a great example of it. I loved it. And now, I love the car. It's seemingly a sports car made for people that want to get in that world without having to be super rich. You don't get the top but you most definitely don't get the low! Will you say the Dodge Hornet is a better car than a Hellcat, or the WRX CVT is better than a STI, or will you say the Kia Forte GT Line will blow the Audi RS3 out of the water?????
Perfect video for one of the most perfect cars of this generation. Y'all knocked it out of the park with this one; the storytelling, cinematics, and clever delivery have only just satiated my desire for a time while I wait until this gorgeous Lotus is attainable. Well done 🙌
My impression is suspension choice is best determined by local road conditions for the driver. If you have mostly smooth surfaces, sport is the way to go; if there's a good amount of road imperfections or potholes, need Touring. Harry's garage demonstrated it in his back to back review which was really cool. Personally, I love this car in Dark Verdant. So pretty in sunlight. Amazing review though. I may have to test drive one but I love Alfa 4C wayyy too much to trade it in and I can't rationalize or afford a 2nd 2 seater. There's something about the Alfa even 6 years post ownership it just puts me in a happy place.
Don't know if you guys will see this but I want to thank you for this review. I was seeking a new sports car and your comments sold me! I just received my Edition 1 Emira (Meridian Blue, Tan Interior, No Black Pack) a week ago and just took it out today for its first true run about. I have never had so much fun behind the wheel of a car. There are a lot of great ones out there but this one sure is fun. I did love your recent review of the 718 Spyder RS which is also a dream car of mine but, sadly, likely not to be as I have little sway with any Dealers. Great channel. Love the content. Thank you again!
I feel even better about my own Emira order after watching this video. I’ve been biting my nails since I ordered it almost two years ago, wondering (just like James) if I wasn’t being practical, perhaps I’d made a mistake. Thanks for the video guys!!!!
glad to see you guys reviewed this car. This is the car I would buy over any other modern sports car. green...green roof, tan interior, yellow calipers, V6, Manual with the spoked wheels. Amazing.
There are so very few times that I like what I see and hear 100%, to the point I have nothing to say and just staying speechless, enjoying what they have done with the car! This is one of those times! Congratulations to you guys for the awesome review!❤❤❤
Nice one lads, I got mine back in November (first ever Hethel collection car too!) and it's bloody awesome - so much engagement and a brilliant drive! Enjoy :) I also went for Sport chassis, it's totally fine and not too compromised over touring.
@Charming Chowder That's my M4 in the profile picture. The internet is amusing, it took you longer to decide I'm talking 'bull' and type that ,than clicking on my profile, to see videos of my Lotus Emira, confirming in fact it was the first Hethel collection one ever. But hey, easier to just 'call it bull'. Never judge a book by it's cover eh ;)
@Charming Chowder you actually think people pretend to own a car they don't? there's an official lotus press release on their official website with pics of me picking it up, but maybe that's fake too 😂😂
I am SO happy this car drives as good as it looks! Well done Lotus. James - great choice. I personally would have picked different colours, but otherwise you just nailed the spec. Can't wait to hear how you feel about the sports suspension on our Ontario roads. Which tires did you go with?
Super pumped to hear about the road-trip series…and really hope it’s in Canada! Emira looks amazing, but find it hard to imagine it would be dramatically better than your MX5 in Toronto.
I like the way these guys give shout outs to the C8. Whether just shout outs or even sympathy shout outs, still it makes most of us poor Americans feel appreciated for at least one thing nowadays .......
Really excited to hear that y'all are doing a road trip video! I've thought for the last year that the chemistry and production value is ready to tackle that type of task. Can't wait!!
Quite a glowing review! Lotus has been coming on strong the past few years - I really hope they can sustain this, because they are making some fantastic vehicles. So pleased to hear the two of you will be going on a road trip - that’s the natural evolution of this excellent show that I was hoping for. I’m sure it won’t disappoint. PS Congratulations on the purchase!
This video does the best job of any Emira video on TH-cam in terms of actually showcasing the engine sound! Not just some revving at a standstill or drive-bys. I keep coming back for the sound! (Also, great review & fun presentation!)
Poor Harry was dancing on the showroom floor like he had to pee when he was taking delivery. I felt so happy for him. He was literally like a kid waiting to open his Xmas/ Birthday presents! That Delivery presentation from the Lotus staffer was perfect. Kept the car cover on just long enough to drive Harry nuts.
That was one of the best car reviews I've ever seen. I am biased though, as I work at Lotus. You'll love the car James! Can't wait to see some more Lotus content
I remember seeing a seen through glass review with this and he said it was a car he'd seriously consider buying one if he didn't already have the cars he has. It must be good, and I think it looks awesome in the yellow.
In many ways the Emira checks all the boxes on my wish list. That it is 1/3 the price of exotics and on par with more commonplace sports cars is just a bonus. It is a car I could buy and enjoy for years without ever feeling I should have bought a used exotic for the $100k or a Corvette C8.
Your choice of car, engine, and color can not be faulted. I was in the market and it came down to this car, or a C8 Stingray. I eventually chose the Stingray, but it would be epic to take the two cars on the road trip you referred to. Either way, congrats on the new car. Can't wait to see what cones next.
@@ju4121 Compared to all the civics corollas and other sedans and SUVs on the road its exotic. It also objectively has quite a few more things going for it over the emira, the powerplant is superior, you can get it as a convertible, and it'll probably go more miles before it starts to fall apart.
Sorry but Chevrolet lost me with the Corvette not giving it a manual for the C8 generation. .The new Z06 makes it better and looks way less awkward than the Stingray, but still really disappointed they decided to ditch the manual for one of the coolest sports cars.
I got a chance to go for a spin in one back in December. This car is AMAZING! The only thing is that people will keep stopping you to ask what car it is so that can be a down side for some people.
One minor thing they missed. There's room for two carry on size bags longitudinally stowed (potentially rooms for three upright) behind the seats at max rearward travel on the seat (at least on the one I tested). This makes it more practical than a Miata as you've somewhere to put bags that don't get heated by the exhaust (not that I'm against Miatas - I've had two and would have them again were it not for me not pulling my deposit on an Emira)
Oh boy, I've wanted one since I first saw one in the press photos. Then, seeing one in person at the Toronto auto show just made me appreciate the size and proportions so much more. It's design perfection. Now I just need the markets to recover so I can think about a deposit again!
Love my Evora 400. It’s great to see Lotus continue producing the same magical chassis, but with the capital to make massive leaps forward in interior aesthetics, technology, and materials. I find myself jealous of Caymans now and then for reasons of build solidity, quality of cabin, and driver ergonomics. Looks like many of these things are addressed by the Emira. Might just have to join James and Thomas on the deposit list!

After delay and delay I finally got a call that I'll be getting my allocation as well. We can thank California for holding up the whole process. the 400 was pretty much my goal but since UK gets the 430gt and US doesn't, kinda feels like I've settled. thankfully the Emira stays at the same price range about these times around so getting an updated interior and exterior should be worth going for. Thanks for the video guys!
The stunning Southern California setting transforms this video from simple car review into a pure love affair between driver, car, road. I am here for it.
That's why I love this channel. These guys get me and what I want from a car. People I'm around only like big engines and big cars. What matters is how it feels to drive.
My 996 C4S is to me a nearly perfect car and this is the only new car I've really considered trading it for. I also like that it has the same engine as my daily rav4.
Lotus Emira, the upgrade every Miata owner wants. Ask me how I know. Nice color choice going with the blue. In my dreams I pick the yellow car, but then I wake up and I am still married.
It’s certainly quite the change - but ultimately a different car. The Emira is a fair bit heavier. The steering is far superior due to the numbness of the mx5s. The shift feel is better on the mx5. As decent as the Emira’s is, the fact is that the MX5s is pretty much the best in the game (although Honda would have something to say about that). In every other way the Emira is a fairly significant upgrade. I went the other way and picked up an Elise after my ND. Depends what ultimately you’re looking for.
This video reaffirms my want of a Lotus (whether that be an Elise, Exige, Evora, or Emira). The Emira looks like an absolutely gorgeous car, and that color is definitely one of my favorites.
Awesome video. Glad to see Lotus is really hitting the home runs of late. My Eletre is on pre-order and I'll be here the minute TH-cam alerts me that you've dropped a review for it. @@eugenux Are you ok? I mean, I've seen two of your comments now and both are just supercilious and condescending, seemingly for the sake of it. Good for you, you obviously have very strong opinions. Because in such a situation, your opinion is literally worthless. Try and be a little less insecure and then you might not feel the need to be so supercilious and condescending.
F-yeah!!!! Outstanding video, the way you set up the optioning with the drive was excellent. Even the creative shot with the little creek in the ditch, everything about this was just mint.
I appreciate that they went to KEF for their audio solution. It is a well-known and very competent British audio brand. If they tuned that car's audio setup anywhere near as well as they did the LS60 then it should sound spectacular. Given that the LS60 cost $7k, probably not, but a guy can hope.
How long have these guys been out? Really well done directing, not super short cuts like a lot of modern stuff. The C8 looks like a Mack truck compared to this beauty. The Emira is helping green cars be great again.
Interesting note about the audio: KEF is one of the few (and I mean few) brands that actually can do a coaxial speaker properly. To see them put that into a car is incredible, since usually the tweeter and midrange won't be anywhere near each other in cars. Unfortunately, KEF can't do bass or loud. So while I bet that it sounds incredible, it probably has bass and volume limits... Though I don't think that matters when you're in a Lotus...
@@mohawkpathology It very well may have a "sub"... Of course, no manufacturer is really putting true subwoofers into cars, and the cabin size is way too small to get good bass performance. Not to mention the weight penalty of having a subwoofer. My statement was more in general regarding my experience with KEF speakers. The only time I heard legitimately good bass from a KEF speaker was the Blade 2. Every other time (Q950, R11, Reference 1, etc), they have been lacking a bit. While they do make decent subwoofers, they still lag behind other manufacturers in my opinion. The statement about volume limits is backed up by my experience as well. Even the Q950s and R-series lack the dynamic capabilities compared to speakers with more power like JBL's Studio 580 and HDI-3800, and Martin Logan's Motion XT line. In this case, it's mainly down to the tweeter / midrange not being able to keep up at high volumes. Now, in a car, especially a lotus cabin, most of these issues won't be a factor. Additionally, the bass and other sound that KEF does do is usually very clean, and will probably beat out most other systems. However, when compared to something with more horsepower (like the Bowers and Wilkins branded system in the BMW X5), or more technical capability, like the Dirac optimized systems in Volvos, the KEF system will probably lag behind. Of course, those two examples I cited are in luxury vehicles, not sports cars. For a proper sports car, I'd be willing to bet that the KEF system blows the competition out of the water, and looks cool while doing it. Just don't expect it to hit 11...
@@macattack123mattc3 yep. totally agree. i love my ls50 and even my q100. never been much of a base guy myself and have only really used subs in home theater. never felt the need to with my home hifi 👍
You are absolutely right about the volume level. I was able to test drive one in California and the volume on the stereo is extremely low. I own a 22’ C8 3LT and it blows the Lotus’ sound system out the water. Very disappointing. Lotus could have included more tech such as blind side alerts in the mirrors and also a front facing camera which records as a dash cam and on the track. Also should include the option for a screen in the rear view mirror which significantly increases visibility. Again all these are included in a Corvette for a less starting price (even mine fully loaded was $96K). With that said, the Lotus does seem less car for the money but the manual gearbox and driving dynamics offer something special. They also should offer adjustable dampers. Why do you HAVE to choose between sport and touring suspension…. You can have it all with adjustments and within the price range.
The production value of this video is simply 👏 👌 🍻 ❤ Your DP and editing dept. are top shelf. I wouldn't buy a Lotus product, but I realllly wanna drive a Magna Red Emira with the sport suspension... It looks like an event. Gotta run. Off to watch more T/H vids!

Look up the Emira GT4 exhaust, just to give yourself a taste of what that modified 2GR is capable of… You’ll be changing that profile picture pretty quickly there after 😂 And that’s coming from someone who loves Porsche, over all their probably my favorite car company besides Toyota (for their 80s and 90s cars as well as just fun cars like the GR86 or GR Corolla that don’t need to exist but they do because Toyota loves car enthusiasts, which I appreciate as a consumer.
@@griffins750 ya I heard some modded ones that rev to 8k n they sound orgasmic, but the stock engine and price right now is cayman gt4 spyder territory not far off gt4rs, they just need a higher revving special engine to compete with those cars, the emira looks way better then the gt4 tho and its a nicer interior, hydraulic steering rack so I would rather get the emira equivalent, hopefully they make a emira spyder that would be super epic.
This was such a great take as usual! You guys are phenomenal! What a beautiful car, I too appreciate the heck out of the mechanical sights and sounds good of that gearbox. Freaking awesome. I’d totally buy one
I'm picking up my Emira in Glasgow tomorrow... Heading straight to the Cairngorms and staying over night. I'll head home via North Pennines and Yorkshire Dales.
Being around backroad racing a lot you always are surprised by how good the 2grs sounded with a exhaust on a Camry. Toyota simply doesn’t make normal engines and it almost sounds like it pays homage too the ford cosworth v6 series
Personally, I loved this car from first preview way back when and am cheering from the bleachers that it'll be a future classic. I see the fairly recent influx of funds hasn't pulled _all_ of the traditional Lotus out of the build quality, but that 94K is WAY off the previously disclosed 59K price they advertised in the teasers. At any rate, I'm sure (if it holds together) it'll be one of the best cars Lotus has ever commissioned.
@@scottcrawford3745 If I heard/read correctly, it was 96K USD, which is still 30K more even with conversion. Granted, the price was optimistic when originally discussed as they wanted it under the C8 Corvette (which of course along with everything else has spiraled north of 80K), but dang, 30K even with dealer markups and some choice options is borderline asinine versus the expected list. I'm sure they'll sell well, and I hope they do, though I can count the number of Lotus cars I've seen in a major metroplex on one hand. Come to think of it, I've seen more Aston's, McLaren's, and even Alfa Guilia's with their very low dealership numbers.

It's... too small. Or at least it looks it. Six-footers look okay standing next to a Cayman, but they look ridiculous next to this.

Interesting note about the audio:
KEF is one of the few (and I mean few) brands that actually can do a coaxial speaker properly.
To see them put that into a car is incredible, since usually the tweeter and midrange won't be anywhere near each other in cars.
Unfortunately, KEF can't do bass or loud. So while I bet that it sounds incredible, it probably has bass and volume limits... Though I don't think that matters when you're in a Lotus...
i’m too lazy to look it up. doesn’t it have a sub? either way the kef midrange is worth it
@@mohawkpathology It very well may have a "sub"...
@@macattack123mattc3 oh cool! my wife just picked up a 2019 xc60 with the bowers system…are those dirac corrected??
Amazing video, it’s proper Top Gear at certainly a fraction of the price that the BBC spends on its clips.
Detailed and pretty much perfect analysis of this car by the two journalists which I’ve had the pleasure of test driving too.
Gorgeous. Supercharged V6, aside from the performance and amazing sound, is probably the better choice for reliability I would think.
Congratulations James (and Thomas too I suppose 😁) you made the right choice! Personally I'd have gone for Yellow instead of blue but still a great colour for that car. Congrats once again, you guys deserve it! 👏🏻
loved when James mentioned that Lotus knows something about making car despite not knowing marketing, dealer network, delays on parts order and pricing in UK lol
Love this car only reason I didnt get one right now is because they will refine it, make it more reliable, update it and make many more versions of this, maybe higher redlines, then I can later choose which version to buy. N I'm incredibly excited for the adventure series, this is a dream come true, cant wait. 🏎🔥💨💨🏎🔥💨💨💨
Very happy to see the channel buy such a sick car! Wishing you guys the best with the purchase!
I'm picking up my Emira in Glasgow tomorrow... Heading straight to the Cairngorms and staying over night.
I'll head home via North Pennines and Yorkshire Dales.
Looooooooove it! Exterior and interior styling are lovely to me, and I've always been a fan of the sound they got out of that V6... 😍
That 2gr growl never gets old
Being around backroad racing a lot you always are surprised by how good the 2grs sounded with a exhaust on a Camry.
If you convert from Pounds Sterling, It's exactly right ( well, 96K CDN as of today).

That's for the base amg 4 cylinder. ~60k.
1st off I just wanted to thank you guys for an amazing car review entertainment. Not only that you guys are very enjoyable and entertaining to watch, but also knowledgeable and video editing is top notch. Needless to say we would love to see you guys get the Emira and yes please do make road trip series. Thank you for what you do guys!
Wow guys, I didn’t realise it was this good. Always thought it looks like a Ferarri. Thanks for bringing us this video.
What a great video to wake up to on my B-day, y’all are the best car reviewers out there!
Happy Birthday!!🎉 Hope you have an amazing rest of your day!
Thomas and James' chemistry is EVERYTHING.
James' dead serious reaction to Thomas even just mentioning the helmet🤣😂
When someone like Gordon Murray appreciates lotus, you know it's good!
For less than half the price of the 911 turbo, this is one amazing car!
Lol why would you even compare this to a 911 Turbo? Completely different cars in different classes.
@@dantesparda2016 Because it drives even better than a 911 T. Every review i have seen, (including this one) says so. It's not all about 0-60 times, and this is also pretty close even on that. It also looks better, sounds better, and has more cool features (like the passenger can see parts of the transmission, etc) and like i said - it's less than half the price! I am a Porsche owner myself, but if i wanted a brand new car today, i would have bought this over a 911 T.
@@panzeralienofficial it drives better then 911? :))))))))
@@panzeralienofficial Why would you talk about "driving good" and then mention 911 turbo, atleast talk about GT3
That "cargo space? car go road" joke at the end 😂😂. Great job guys
