I live in the desert southwest of America, where sunshine and beautiful roads are easy to find. Yet Henry and Carfection manage to do something I don't expect. They make me want to drive down a cold, rainy road in Scotland or Wales.
As an American who lived and worked in the UK a few years ago I can tell you they are fantastic. I driven some great roads in the Rocky Mountains and up and down the coast of SoCal which are great too, but the change of scenery, weather and a whole different vibe you feel discovering some B roads, especially in Wales and Southern Scotland, can make a gear head/petrol head/car guy a happy SOB for sure.
@@Peanutdenver There are some really great roads in the Irish Hills in southern Michigan, too...as short as they are, they still demand your full attention (and it's not just because of the wildlife!).
As a Scot I can attest to the joy of driving the roads of Scotland. I cover thousands of miles each year with no set destination. Just following where the roads take me.

Cup holders, quality fit and finish, excellent headlights...I'm not sure I'm ready for this kind of Lotus. I've had an Elise for 17 years. The only time it has heated seats is when I've eaten a bean burrito.
I’ve now finally got a car with cup holders. In fact I’ve had I’d six years. Never used them. I’m 75…I’ve never bought a takeaway drink in a cup. It just seems silly.
Another great video Henry. This reminds me of an article by Steve Cropley in Autocar where he drove an M100 Elan to the Jim Clark museum back in the 90's. 👌I saw Jim Clark's Indy car with the yellow exhausts and stripe at the Henry Ford Museum recently, such an impressive machine.
The older I get the more I imagine myself owning a small fun and light sports car as my final car rather than some high powered beast. To that extent, historically I think Lotus has targeted that segment perfectly and I have no doubt the Emira will be great whether at launch or over a generation or two. Hopefully by then I will be in a financial position to buy one as my final ICE hurrah. Many thanks for this video on what could be my dream car.
Disappointingly, its porkiness is something of which Chapman would not approve. Frankly, this means it isn't a Lotus in any real sense. An Alpine is a better bet if lightness is your goal.

It's amazing the effect of having cheap and available camera drones has had on the "test drive". Now it's a panorama of sweeping hills and plunging valleys and of roads, made for drivers, twisting and turning into the distance. Your videos look beautifully done and are a pleasure to watch. Great tip on the toe and camber settings between the two tire choices! Changing the toe, camber, and caster (just adjusting some bolts) on my track car transformed the dynamics every bit as much as all the physical parts that I added or replaced for thousands of dollars. So even if you get the Goodyear tires, there's nothing stopping you from having a shop change that alignment for $100 or so
Nice link to the past, to the greatest driver of them all (according to Fangio, and he should know!). Jim Clark was / is my hero since childhood. Those Borders roads are also very evocative, and you reminded me of a similar trip I had made through that area, in nothing so exotic as a brand new or even newer than new in your case! Rather my trip was in a fabulous little Toyota MR2 mk1. Which was really suited to those twisty roads. Drove past Edington Mains and spent some time at his grave, the headstone of which lists Farmer as his first profession, World Champion and Indy 500 winner came further down the list. What a man…
Thank you so much! I almost died of pneumonia in 1965. My dad brought a Matchbox model of Jim Clark's winning Indy car to the hospital. Thank you Dad, and thank you Jim Clark, both in heaven.
"Plenty quick enough for a road car"-. Manual box, minimalist interior and not copying the hyper-script that leaves me slightly bored. What a great review, constructively critical and hinting enough as to what is required to hopefully gift us a final hurrah sports car and in doing so redefine what a super-car really is- it doesn't have to be a missile, just plenty quick enough for a road car. The homage to Jim Clark so subtle and respectful - the mere mention of his name and images of him in happier, more simple times still evokes for me a tear. Thanks, Henry.
Beautiful video, loved the story that encapsulated the journey. As for the gearbox, brother and I noticed even when Button was demonstrating the car on the Lotus test track that the shift wasn't good, with him having to pause between gears. Even one of the official test drivers with Harry was doing the same. I can't help feel that their engineers need to review that before production. The interior has definitely improved over the Elise. I think what happened after the Elise and TVR boom was that people's expectations of what a car could do and should do changed. They couldn't afford just to have a track day car - it had to work as a daily driver, or at least as a second car. Like a Porsche can. With raised expectations of owners, the far better quality of the interior is definitely the right idea. Other than that, it seems the only problem Lotus have with the Emira is they sold out. A nice problem to have.

On my Aprilia V4 motorbike with fully adjustable suspension, I prefer softer front, on British b roads that is. With factory stiff setting I was tired and bruised after 30min. I think there is a balance to be had in those cars as well. Ideal would be adjustable suspension on the fly, but.... to be fair , how many people dive into corners or do track those days? If you need stiff front, you can probably do it, but for rest of us a bit understeer is probably preferable, as it means, softer everyday ride. I presume Lotus will do more track focus version, as corvette did with C07 stiffing up suspension by 25% compering to C06 even.
Lovely looking car and lovely looking video, as usual from Henry and Carfection. In my dream version of this car, I think I'd go for Touring and AMG engine, then go for a tour from Devon up to Arran, and maybe a trip round Brittany...
Saw you in olney. Had to stop myself grabbing you and congratulating you on this review. So up for this car, but surely wait for the merc engine and a small remap back to the 420 bop it will do. Lighter and more charismatic, but will miss that lovely manual box linkage. Can’t wait to see you review it.
It might not actually be that simple. I have heard rumours the reason it is de tuned is they can’t fit the full cooling system off the a45s. All rumour of course there are others like may not be getting the super clever injection system they run although that sounds a bit less likely to me. It could all be nonsense to discourage people just buying i4 and remapping.

Lovely looking car and lovely looking video, as usual from Henry and Carfection.
In my dream version of this car, I think I'd go for Touring and AMG engine, then go for a tour from Devon up to Arran, and maybe a trip round Brittany...
Brittany sounds like great choice. Never been
I love this guys geeky unbiased review. Subscribed
This video - which is stunning - will sell plenty of Emiras, I'm sure. The link with Clark is such a beautiful thread to this post.
Nice road trip, and a great homage to an absolute Great!
Congrats Henry, fantastic images and a great commentary. How do I miss Jim and lightweight Lotuses…
just another cinematography masterpiece by carfection!
please, some specifications on the watch on display
Question: this or Alpine A110 for road-use?
This guy is the most relaxing car presentor.
those shots just pops on in eye
This reminds me of the brilliant McLaren 570GT film you made. Wonderful
Such an epic car in every aspect! A bit like this Henry’s presentation skills!
Absolutely beautiful countryside. And car.
That intro is suberb, crazy quality.👏🏻
So Lucky to live in the North East of England and have this on our doorstep for a Sunday morning blast before the world awakens.
Anyone have an idea what road(s) Henry was driving on? They look amazing
