I LOVE what Lotus has done with the Emira. It is definitely on the shortlist and the fact it has that Toyota-sourced supercharged V-6 is nothing but a big plus for me. Not only does it provide linear power delivery but being a Toyota-sourced engine means it is going to last in the years to decades to come and being able to drive the car worry-free years from now greatly outweighs any "exotic" engine that sounds good when it works but does not work all the time. Seeing how this is the last gas-powered Lotus, engine reliability is more important than ever.

When sportscars go all electric, they'll need to compete some way or the other. There is a huge challenge to not make them pigs (Porsche didn't even try with Taycan, ended up heavier than a roomy Tesla). Perhaps making them BOTH amazing GTs and fun track cars is going to be where it's at. Clever noise management for various drive modes. Ideally non fake.

Good to see that Chris - unsurprisingly - gets the Emira. A fair few reviews have taken the touring spec car on track on gone ‘ooh it’s a bit soft’ when that is what makes Lotus cars magic on the road. For once they’ve had the budget to do things the normal way round and not skip straight to the stripped out track nutter. No doubt they’ll get there though - and i look forward to a stripped out, stupid BHP AMG engined Emira in a few years.
@@danielclaudio5764 it’s definite trait of their cars. I was worried the Emira would begin to chase the slightly over damped German sports car feel but its good to hear that its been kept Lotus-y.
Totally disagree with Chris on the engine, it absolutely IS an instrument of music with a decent exhaust on it. But it doesn't go very well considering it's a supercharged 3.5 litre engine, it's fine but it's not knock your socks off quick. They are much much better when fettled with.

With Geely's billions, could they not have developed a brand new engine for the Emira? Because the 2GR-FE engine used in the Emira first came out as far back as 2005. Sure it's reliable and built to last, but it's not advanced or particularly impressive. Old tech in a brand new 2022 car? Seems like the cheap and easy option they have gone for. I know everything else is brand new, but anyone who currently or previously owned an Evora 400 or Evora 410, are those customers really going to be chomping at the bit to sell their Evora and buy an Emira with exactly the same engine and trans?? Nothing revolutionary going on here. Maybe I'm being too negative but imo the best thing about a Lotus, is that if you were a poor driver, a Lotus would make you look and feel like an absolute amateur, and that's a good thing! I'm getting the vibes that anyone with a licence could easily drive this new Emira. Secondly, what about Jethro Bovingdon's comments about it having too much understeer and too much body roll?? Is he the only one being honest or does he just have an issue with Lotus?
That would be incredibly stupid to design a whole new engine just to sell for 7 years untill they electric, they already said this is there last gas powered car. Why does Lotus Emira get sucked in into using 20 and 21 inch wheels, while their GT4 Emira uses 18 inch. Why force us to purchase heavier and less performance oriented 21 inch tyre and wheels. Formula 1 was forced to go from 14 inch to 18 inch because the Tyre manufacturers payed off some executives. Are Lotus executives being paid off?

Why is it so damn slow? 0-60 in 4.5s? Straight line acceleration has never been goal of Lotus, but that's super sluggish for a light car with this much BHP.
Mostly because of the manual probably. It takes substantially longer time for you to change gears through a manual box than you do in a double clutch automatic. Maybe its harder to launch due to rwd compared to awd?
The real time is 3.7 with a auto and 3.9 with a manual, I think around 4.3 to 5.0 is the sweet spot, for a road car. Manufacturers always under rate there times. Its already perfectly powered anymore would ruin it, and make it less fun on twisty roads.
Why on earth do you need more power than that? You can’t use more than that on the road for any length of time at all. Modern supercars are simply too much.
Kolme, I completely agree with you. Light, small, that much power, it should be quicker than that. My best guess is that their options for manual was small, and the selection for manual gear boxes is slowly decreasing with time? With more horsepower than a Lotus Exige, it's slower 0-60, but faster in the 1/4 mile (as it should with more horsepower)... The thing is.. I love the V6 but that engine and trans options are at their power limit, the 4cyl can make way more power, there are more experienced tuners for them, and the DCT is no joke. Also, you end up with a lighter package. I have a feeling, for as much as the purists and outsiders might rag on me, the AMG option will be a better bang for buck and give you way more performance (for as much as I LOVE the V6 sound)
@@wellingtonbruh3756 but you cant tune the amg without hitting heat issues. the lotus engineer said they detuned it because of the mid engine limited it.
@@Pepe-dq2ib oh that's very true. But I get a dct. Yet that manual trans is really cool. I gotta choose between turbo flutter and two step or a manual trans, good engine sounds, and supercharger whine.

My S1 Exige,same road,rides and grips,and stays on the road,absorbing everything.😊
Can NOT wait until I get an AMG turbo DTC!!!
it feels like the emira is a spiritual successor to the old nsx
Closer to an MR2, but yeah, the NSX was never very sporty tbh, super long gearing and a rather plain engine meant it’s body was writing checks the rest of the car as an experience just couldn’t cash, the Mr2 on the other hand… It was almost too much of a driver’s car, with suspension design developed by racing drivers, it was a bit too knife’s edge… The Emira takes the excitement and experience of a spiced up SW20 MR2 and refines it… Or it did, until you listen to the Emira GT4 and you realize that it’s batshit in a slightly different way 😂 (just look up Emira GT4 and click on the video labeled “LOUD” 😂)
Lotus car story is one of the modt interesting car story ever
Why can’t they make the top gear TV show like this, instead of dumbing it down!
Because they do it on TH-cam and us geeks can find it here- tv is for the mass audience and I think they get a difficult balance about right.
Re: the GTS 4.0 vs Emira V6, I feel like most people who aren't journalists won't have as much first hand exposure to both for their choice to be dampened by the other existing - I wholly say this as someone who will likely never see either in the metal let alone drive them. So the old V6 probably won't seem so bad in isolation.
Also it still sounds brilliant. Better than the gts imo. Although the gt4 rs is probably the best sounding car on sale atm
Look up “the Emira GT4 sound” on YT and click on the video labeled “LOUD” Make sure to bring an extra pair of pants. 😂
By all reviews the Emira is better than the twice+ expensive Maserati MC20 and sounds no better or worse than a depreciating McLaren.
Why do McLarens depreciate so much?
Steven, I think the Emira is a beautiful car but, you can't be serious. 2X better than the MC20. Take a look at the MC20 specs vice the Emira.
@@ronretired282 read my comment again. I said the Maserati was twice as expensive.
Looks, seating comfort, look and feel of the dash and controls. Worth getting right, and more so in an EV.
After Emira, all Lotii will be. The first two are promised to be on the light side, actually.
Ev’s are woke flying turds
McMurtry showed those who absolutely need noisy EVs the solution at Goodwood: stick a fan on it.
The Porsche isn't meant to be anything but a luxury car
There are more options for luxury SUVs. good news for consumers
I too am amazed with what is coming out of the Geely factories. Next up now don’t laugh is the new Smart #1 50/50 Geely tech Mercedes styling, I’m very tempted.
New Top Gear is only Chris Harris, only
Idk why everyone thinks the 2GR V6 is tapped out. People are making 750+ hp with them now
Gearbox can't take it. Most of the big power Exige don't use the standard box.
Love these 2 chatting.
More of these 2 please and less of the rest.
Thank you.
No doubt they’ll get there though - and i look forward to a stripped out, stupid BHP AMG engined Emira in a few years.
was lotus known for being soft at any point
@@danielclaudio5764 it’s definite trait of their cars. I’ve got an S1 Elise and the suspension is actually quite compliant - there is a good amount of body roll in the corners, but that’s part of the feedback it gives. The Evora rides ridiculously well, as good as any mid size saloon. I was worried the Emira would begin to chase the slightly over damped German sports car feel but its good to hear that its been kept Lotus-y.
I’m finding the slashes in the bonnet hard to deal with and I’m a little “meh” on the front end in general, fantastic profile though 🤷🏻♂️
Glad to know that you guys in the West love this Chinese car so much - bravo Lotus the pride of China!!
??? What???
Toyota is Japanese and Lotus is British, where the fuck are you getting Chinese from?
One thing I disagre wirh Chris is the sound. It's one of the best sounding V6 you can drive. Also power wise the engine can handle much more.
Have you heard the Emira GT4??? If not look it up on YT and click the video with “LOUD” in the title, also bring an extra pair of pants 😂
Totally disagree with Chris on the engine, it absolutely IS an instrument of music with a decent exhaust on it. But it doesn't go very well considering it's a supercharged 3.5 litre engine, it's fine but it's not knock your socks off quick. They are much much better when fettled with.
I feel like it’s a great balance of speed/power for the road. Underpowered for the track maybe. But think about how much fun it will be revving this thing out on the roads vs something like a Bugatti that is too fast for the road. I think they might have found a sweetspot here for speed/enjoyment
I think they could squeeze another 50hp out of it with a special edition version which you could definitely feel
I think Mr Harris has driven too many very expensive supercars!
Enjoyed that.
Well done lotus,
Brilliant as always Chris
Lotus needs more dealerships in the US. People are not going to buy one if the closest dealership is 500 miles away. I can get a BMW M or a Porsche and have a dealership right in my town.
Series 32 good bit short. Season 33 predictions Aston vantage v12 review road trip in bangers two Europe to hyper hatches head 2 head SF90 vs lambo aventodor replacement lambo urus update review and prob Chris giving f1 a go and testing small city cars around dunsfold
Lotus got lardy. Shame. A true lightweight with an nsx style high revving V6 would have been brilliant.
Always wished Jack Rix was a Top Gear TV presenter along with Chris, and one other, neither of the other 2.
Not really worth the bother to develop a V6 for just 8 years and 25000 - 50000 car units...
@@harald.370 Why not develop a V6 for both Lotus and Volvo?
@@johnmitchell2269 I included those in the 25000 - 50000 units 😁
Seriously, not worth the bother anymore. 🎶 Cause the times are a-changing... 🎶
That would be incredibly stupid to design a whole new engine just to sell for 7 years untill they electric, they already said this is there last gas powered car. The engine is already perfection 8000rpm sounds amazing u dont need anything more. Complaining about the lotus v6 is like conplaining about the new 992 gt3 engine because its the same, doesnt matter its a master piece I would buy that engine for the next billion years
Think he had the wrong suspension/tyre set up for the track. Plus he was comparing against the track legend cayman gt4 which is slightly unfair. Touring and Eagle F1s for the road, Sport and Pilot cup2’s for the track.
I hope they make a GT4 inspired version, with wings etc. I’d contemplate this over a cayman GT4.
Ummm… Dude…
I present to you… The Emira GT4 concept… I hope you brought a second pair of pants 😂 Skip to about 1:00 in to get some actual revs, the car does a burnout from the start line and, well I’ll let you experience it for yourself. 😂

Nice discussion guys. One question though. Are there two lights on the wall behind you or one butt?
But don't mention the Volvo C40 Recharge, that's a crime against aesthetics if ever there was.
THAT is a LOT of car for $75k ! seriously impressive. . .

No one does it better.
It’s as wide as a mustang though. Can’t we have a mini Emira?
Why is there a picture of an 'arse crack' in the background behind the sofa? 🤔
Sad the AMG engine won't have a manual.
What's with the bum in the background?
😂
Pretty weird
I wouldn't touch an Emira with a barge pole unless it was to track it. For daily living, Porsche everyday of the week.
Chris had a rough night.
I like it the lotus.
Lotus always knows what they are doing and what people want
Love lotus and totally made up that Chris has a PS1
The Emira is stunning, but the Cayman is a better car. It's not like it's ugly either. It'll still massively turn heads.
This will be the last ever lotus made in Britain, as well as the last lotus that isn’t an SUV.
Exotic Looks... Must be accompanied with an exotic sound. The sound is the soul of the car...
Can farts from a Toyota engine.. or sweet bangs and pops from a BMW derived s58.. and sweet turbo whine, downshifts..mmmm.💯
I want an Emira but I’ll have to sell the Supra. I don’t want to sell the Supra because I’ll regret it. However, I can’t have both. 😭
test drive the Emira. That will get you clarity
Lack of dealerships up north put me off!
Yea not looking forward to trekking over to Bradford! Hopefully they’ll add a Leeds or a York dealership to the network soon
Only auto with the better engine? 😑
I'm No engineer... But I would order the Chassis.. ditch the Toyota Motor... And swap a BMW derived s58 Motor... Bump up hp to say. 700hp.. makes a perfect daily driver.. 😉. My .02. 💯
It’s a LOTUS! And we all know what that means. 😍
Lots of trouble, usually serious.

So you're saying put the Porsche engine in the Emira.
That would be very nice.
That would be a dream for me would pay twice Emira money for GT4RS engine in it lol
Wouldn't be hard to get another 100hp out of that V6 500hp and a quaife sequential is where my cash would go.
Won't make any difference to Lotus' economics. It will sell in tiny numbers and they'll be lucky to recoup the development costs
3:59 so that what he did after /drive screwed over all the hosts. He gassed up Geely, in a questionable act of "journalism", for his rich mate.

Top gear isn't for regular everyday joes. Top gear is a folly for the the rich by the rich.
Look at it this way: Top Gear is entertainment, it's not really buyer advice.
Porsche's are only "good" looking. This new Lotus is the best-looking car since the McLaren P1 - period.

Emira v6 or cayman gts???
Price is almost the same. The Emira looks better but, the performance envelope of the GTS is probably superior.
@@ronretired282 for sure. I would assume porsches build quality is much better, dealer network, engine, brake feel but the exotic exterior, exclusivity and ol fashion steering rack of the lotus is pretty tempting

With more horsepower than a Lotus Exige, it's slower 0-60,
but faster in the 1/4 mile (as it should with more horsepower)...
The thing is.. It's not just a little more horsepower than the Exige (a favorite of mine),
it's a lot more..
I love Chris Harris though..
Been following Chris for well over 10yrs, maybe 15yrs, and I've found that his likes in a car match mine very well.
If he likes it,
then I'd like it.
However,
I refuse to buy anything who is connected to China, even if it's Lotus (who I love), and Chris Harris loves the car.
China, is worse than Russia.
10yrs, 20yrs, from now, when China has put Lotus out of business, has taken control of the worlds media and nobody can say anything bad against them.
They're at military war with West,
You'll be pissed that you've helped contribute to the success of them, just like all the businesses did 20-30yrs ago, to create the China of today.
Today, people talk about how people and banks invested in Chinese Real Estate Bonds, because it's so crystal clear that they are all frauds.
I saw it already 20yrs ago when I was in China...
Visit The Great Translation Movement where they translate what's really said in China.
Everybody will have 2nd thoughts.
The British government needs to step in and break up the relationship.
Peoples infatuation with 0-60 times never ceases to amaze me. Bring this car to a track and see how much a 0-60 time matters.
