I had a bunch of dark red Bloody Mary and yellow goldenback shrimp. Completely different lineages. They bred together to make stunning bright red babies and some had these fiery orange stripes down their back. Very cool to see.
from what I understand, there are four lineages of neocaridina shrimps, ones that were originally bed to be red (cherries) ones that were bred to be brown and blue (Blue Diamond) and one that was bred to be yellow and green, and one to be black. There is also a sub species that makes pearl varieties (they cant breed with the others) They all started from Wild Type colouration. The colours that we see as red orange and blue are all variations on gene expression that are entirely recessive traits. Cherries (including sakuras, fire red, kanoko, red rili blue, blue rili, jelly blue, kohaku, and red taiwan) and orange neos (orange, orange rili, light orange, orange neon, pumpkin, and orange sakura) and oddly enough Variable green and Jade Green shrimps are ALL THE SAME LINEAGE, they will breed and produce colours similar to the parents because both sides of the family carry the recessive traits that create those colours, with dominant (wild type) traits being more of a mutation chance than a guarantee. Shoko, Chocolate, bloody mary (its actually a brown variant!) blue diamond, blue dream, and topaz are in the same lineage. so their breeding, similar to the largest and most diverse one, will have similar results for the same reasons. Deep blue, blue carbon rilli, blue velvet, black rose, carbon rili gold back, and carbon rili are from the same lineage, so same goes for them. Where Yellow, neon yellow, yellow rili, and yellow sakura, and some green flavours (more neon) are a very small very isolated family. if you cross the lineages of these shrimps, you have a far greater chance of losing the bright colours because those recessive genes are two different sets of recessive gene expressions. and the dominant wild type colouration will appear as a result. Any of the pearl varieties (blue pearl, white pearl, amber pearl are a different subspecies of Neocardina (not davidi, its like palomona or something) and they CANNOT interbreed with your davidis
Much information however, only very few traits actually follow the Mendelian rules like you explain here with dominant/recessive inheritance since they are controlled by more than one gene (locus to be more precise) Neocaridina palmata is simply another species within the genus Neocaridina. For binomial names in zoology, the first indicates the genus, second the species (and the third if present, the subspecies)
@@quinncreel6091 Please do better research yourself before you try to educate others. You are partially right regarding the definition of a locus but it is used in the very same context I used it. Locus refers to a part of a chromosome or genome, it doesn't have to be a gene however.
I had a variety of “Skittle” shrimps in my tank which have interbred over the last year or so and the varieties in colour and patterns are really cool to see.
I honestly think the wild type look just as cool but in their own way so I never was worried about mixing colors, but this is a great experiment to show that it's not all black and white (or brown I guess haha)!
Between watching you (one of my top favorite channels) and other shrimp breeders, it’s encouraging to see that some colonies just crash out or don’t do as well. I have felt bad over my own less-than-successful attempts, but when I look at my 4 current experiments, it’s the same ratio as yours! We just gotta keep trying, tweaking things, and also recognizing that nature can’t be controlled 100% I love my shrimp and just got a shrimp tattoo ❤
Cool experiment to share. I crossed 7 color and pattern variants. Some more interesting than others. I now have 30+ colonies continuing to breed. Some second and third generation crosses, of which I have no way of tracking, the results start becoming more interesting, with wildtype shrimp with colored patterns and highlights. The Neo colors all seem to stem from 4 main bloodlines. Red shrimp and blue shrimp can both occur in different bloodlines or come from the same one. Your resulting cross will depend on those bloodlines. I have produced several "weird" ones, the most standout being a "snot green jelly". Not exactly the most appealing. Keep experimenting.
the green sounds appealing af!!!! green is my favorite color though so maybe im a bit biased. i've got a tank going with my wild type yellows and blue dream/dark green jades trying to achieve the same thing. i've just noticed my first group of lil shrimplets so heres to hoping i can get some cool green ones too! lmao
Definitely excited to see more shrimp videos! That's actually how I found your channel a couple years ago. Those old shrimp videos! They're such fun little creatures! 🙏✌️
Shrimp genetics are pretty complicated. If I remember correctly there’s a TH-camr called some thing like “the mysteries living in your aquarium” or maybe “the secrets hiding in your aquarium” something like that that does a really good video on it.
I put some reds and blues together and ended up with very unique looking red, blue shrimp, they are a light blue base with red sections on them. I have not seen any other shrimp like them.
Interesting experiment. I have done something similar, have a 29 gallon with multiple colors of all kinds placed in there about 2-3 years ago. They've thrived. I did wind up with a lot of green colored wild-looking shrimp, some browns, and a whole lot of cinnamon (I guess cherry red but much more diluted). I still see some solid colors here and there, especially red and blue with black splotching, plus some rillis. Interestingly, there is one color type that seems to be dominant in this tank- the blue/black shrimp. I have a bunch of these very dark blue-black solid color shrimp still and they're still going strong.
Love this. My mix of shrimp keep making solid black or really dark blue with a yellow line down their back. They are pretty crazy looking. Always wonder if my shrimp are making something people would want. I love them.
Cool experiment mate! years ago up north I did a bit of collecting shrimp for Gunther Schmida to photograph along with Dr. Bruce Hansen, it was amazing at the variety of shrimp we found, especially in the South Johnstone River, I haven't done it since another mate saw a 4 metre Crocodile in the same spot I was collecting 2 days after I left, every time I go there now I have that in the back of my mind as the mud was knee deep and the water was up to your waist you would never get out if one come up to you 🐊😐
You are the unusual shrimp. The one with spots and colors. Some people see it as weird and faulty, and that you’re not one of them. But we see it is what makes my so beautiful and unique and exciting. Be yourself ❤️ you are loved
Nice video. Glad you took the time to do this. My personal experience is a mix of Red and Blue Jelly. I ended up getting a ton of red rilis and a few blue/red spider man looking things.
I am planning on doing something similar with Endler Guppies, mix and matching different colourations to see what comes out, I only have wild type and tuxedo endlers at the moment but when I get my hands on some Japan Blue and snakeskin endler I want to see what cross breeding them looks like. I'd love to see what yours could turn out like if you did the same!
Thanks for doing that experiment. I have thousands and thousands of shrimp across 47 aquariums. I do see the occasional wild color shrimps that people talk about but they just don’t overwhelm the aquarium like the Internet says it will. It’s also worth noting that I will occasionally see a random color pop out of my red cherry, shrimp colonies. I’ve seen green and blue and the wild color. It’s all very fascinating but after years of doing this, I still have vibrant, red cherry shrimp.
My orange shrimp are definitely breeding the fastest for me. I’ve had my blue dream shrimp the longest and have had breeding, but not as fast as the orange and they seem more sensitive than the orange. My cherry shrimp seem to be pretty robust and hardy. I don’t know if they have bred or not. They are in a 125 gallon heavily planted tank with a ton of smaller fish. I’m sure they have probably bred, but the babies may be getting eaten. I haven’t had them long about to really tell. There is enough plants and hiding spaces though so I’m sure if they are breeding some will survive
Out of my 4 tanks 2 have shrimp, one tank has red cherry and the other has blue jellies, I've never mixed them But The blue jelly tank has so much variation in color there are some super dark one that almost look black and some really light. That's to be expected it whatever right The cool thing in my opinion is that in the red cherry tank I know for a fact I have never added any other shrimp of any other color. And these are more consistent but sometimes rarely ill get a super dark one but even more rarely a yellow will pop up. It always an amazing surprise when I see the yellow it insane
I’m sick in bed watching videos about shrimp. Not what I imagined I’d be doing but here we are. I love the little dance they’re doing with each other. Is this a mating dance?
Great experiment! I'm glad to see that the world doesn't implode when mixing shrimp colors, lol! I had a handful of cherry rili shrimp and added blue dream. I kid you not, I got a red, white, and blue shrimp.
I had 3 red shrimp… somehow got pale blue and blue/red mixed shrimp… the bloodlines are definitely something very interesting. Never expected blue to come in from red shrimp
Would be fun to test out with the blackish wild ones+red/orange. Just the wild ones and see if they could produce the colors they were made from when recessive genes combined down the line... Also see what the pale ones combined could do

I had blue jelly and red cherry or sakura neocaridina. Some combinations where absolutely stunning. Some were part blue and part red. Mostly blue base and stripes or spots or legs were red
I had full red colonies a few years ago. I bought some random cheap red cherries, not very high grade at all. And separated them into two tanks once their numbers rose a bit. After a long while, they ended up all the way to fire red grades!! Awesome in itself but then after a another year, out of nowhere, I had a yellow shrimp!! Just in one colony ofc. A pure yellow shrimp, it was so cool. Eventually the yellow shrimp bred, and there were both yellow, and red. They made some oranges on the way but it would go back to the primary colours. The second colony that was only reds lowered in quality to maybe high Sakura grades. It was super interesting to observe
I have a tank that had a few cull neos in it that were either brown or clear and in just one generation I got a fully melanistic shrimp, a candy cane, and fully red cherry haha.

I've kept shrimp for going on 15 years. Over time they 100% become duller, or clear. On stray green shrimp set me back a year with my carbon rilli colony.
I bred strawberry daiquiri shrimp with blue jelly shrimp and got red shrimp with light blue rectangular windows down its spine. I call it skylight red shrimp.
may i ask what kind of conditioner you are using 1:10, and what kind of water is the best for them? Harder water or softer ones? 25°C i saw u use. May i ask what do you feed them? Thanks in advance :-)

Probably not long enough. Mine were red & yellow. It produced an orange believe it or not, but next few generations it stated producing red & orange rili, then after it brown/blackish type.
Had red, orange and yellow shrimp. Now I have a strong colony with various shades of orange. Agree it must be a strong genetic variant. 🧡

Probably not long enough. Mine were red & yellow. It produced an orange believe it or not, but next few generations it stated producing red & orange rili, then after it brown/blackish type.
Hi Great experiment 🌷🇮🇷
Sorry how did you come brown-algea in to your shrimp tank??
I would love to see another documentary style video made by you but this time about a platypus!
Now you just got breed some wild tipe from each group and see if if coulers come out or just more wild tipes
Would be interesting to see you line breed the orange rillis!
Need a video on algae elimination, getting plagued by black beard algae
I wish the video was a bit longer. But love the content as always. Very well produced
I'm just trying to get nice reds and I keep getting clear with red stripe's or very light transparent reds
Could you try to breed chili rasbora? I can't seems to find much guide online
Could someone tell me about Mendel genetics scheme of shrimps color ?
This is all well and good but what colour tastes the best
Thanks
Love from a Bangladeshi shrimp keeper ❤🇧🇩
