Great to find a fellow Aussie on here! At 70, I am finding outside gardening challenging, so I am thinking about getting into aquascapes as they are just so beautiful. A recent search at our only pet shop was very disheartening though, few plants, no shrimp, few accessories, everything so expensive so I will be binging on your content, buying online and hoping for the best with a new interest. Lots of good tips here. Thanks.
Yeah this is a super expensive hobby for sure. That being said, most things are a one time buy from equipment to plants and if you're really good, your critters will be bought once and you'll have a colony going. Just don't expect it to work out right away. It may very well come as a second nature to you but more likely you'll be frustrated and stressed the first bit. Once you get passed that, the rewards are plentiful!
I have Fluval stratum is both my tanks. Does corals help? What should I do? Am from Melbourne Australia. My ph is 6.8 and KH is like 3.0. Please suggest

I raised a group of balloon convict fry in a 20 gallon tall filled with hundreds of scuds and daphnia. It was amazing watching them grow up and learn to hunt
You are on point. My set up : Matten filter, black sand, 72-78 room temp, Cholla wood, Heavy on the Bocopa and Java moss. They love shrimp pellets and betta pellets and the occasional popped pond snail.
I would add that it is important to also add the same shrimp from another breeder than your first batch once or twice a year to help keep the quality of colour within the shrimp as a whole colony started from just one breeder will end up with many clear and uncoloured shrimp over time. Having different strains will improve the colours.
I am so proud of myself that I already have all of these things that you've listed... and Ive only just started my tank yesterday! Thanks for the reassurance
Shrimp are so cool. They're pretty hearty and super low maintenance. Cute little guys too, I love watching mine crawl around my tank and jump from plant to plant

I first got shrimp a few months ago when I ordered some subwassertang online for my betta tank. I didn't order shrimp, but the seller put 6 in with the moss 😅😅 I didn't do any research about how to keep them alive since I didn't actually purchase them. I threw them and the moss in with my betta and thought he would either have some fancy meals or make some friends. He ended up making friends, though one did die due to a failed molt. I lost another one somewhere along the way, but 4 of those original reds are still plugging along and I have since added 11 orange shrimps. Now it's just them in the tank (upgraded the betta to a different tank) and they get plenty of calcium and a varied diet. Those 4 original shrimp somehow made it without acclimation but I made sure to do it properly with the orange shrimp I intentionally bought lol.
Hi nick! Great video! As for the acclimation process, when you do a water change it’s better to it slowly drop by drop. That way it won’t stress them as much. About no planaria, at least my store sells a dose for 1€, as I would never spend that whole bag in my lifetime, it’s cheaper to just buy the dose treatment when needed Also, just a tip, assuming most people watching this video are new to shrimp keeping, most don’t know the difference between neocaridina and caridina… and so when you say the ideal tank for shrimp is with no substrate, because it’s not that good for your shrimp, I think you should say that this is the ideal set up for neocaridina shrimp! Because the substrate is actually amazing for caridina shrimp!!
I spent like 5 bucks buying the indian almond leaf for my tanks. Just to realize later that that tree grow natively. You can see the tree every 3 second if you travel on car and actually have 1 tree just outside my sister house. I feel dumb sometime.
Most fruit trees work. Not just Indian almond. If it’s a poisonous plant don’t. But apples, peaches, oranges, lemons. All work. Tho orange and lemon leaves add more acidity then others.
*MAGNESIUM* One thing I've learned fighting massive shrimp die-offs is add magnesium. I went through and perfected literally everything I could trying to keep my shrimp alive, and nothing worked. Calcium can't be absorbed without magnesium present. Magnesium is a common coral additive for saltwater tanks specifically for that reason! I picked up some magnesium additives and dosed my tank and boom, no die-offs and babies within two weeks. Like a magic bullet. Obviously there are a lot of things that should be checked, but if all else fails, add magnesium.
@@harrisvillanuevaii6017 add a variety a foods. Looks up what is safe for humans to consume to give you an idea. Probably ground up spinach. Honestly best best it just to buy some coral additives. That way you don't have to guess
We have well water- for some odd reason my shrimp do beautifully in it! I have real plants in all of my tanks. I only do tops up and skim the top of the fish tanks weekly because I don’t use lids on some.- but mainly just do top ups. If I ever do a water changes it’s always 10-15% no more.
Great video nick! I use a thin layer of aragonite sand, seems to be working great, it keep a good bit of calcium in the water and brings a bit of hardness to the water which they enjoy🙂 thanks mate💯⭐️
I got red cherry shrimp for the first time a few months ago. Put a substrate of shell grit for calcium, some java moss, a sponge filter, temp around 24C, and minimal water changes and they are growing and breeding really well. From 10 shrimp there are at least 50 now and I may end up having to try and sell some because I'll have too many!
Love your videos! You have beautiful tanks and shrimp!! I also wanted to mention I found that if you have shrimp shipped, adding a drop or two of Prime while acclimating to the tank helps reduce die off. I don't know if it works for others but this really helped in my experience.
The container you use to acclimate them in. I think it was Flip Aquatics that had said it on one of his videos, so I tried it when I got a shipment of shrimp and they did great.
Great Video, You can try use the Dennerle BABY food which is very good for the young shrimp. I will also say i get confused when everyone likes Java moss, i think its the most chaotic moss out there it looks a right mess. Weeping moss is way nicer
I have a pest snail tank, with aqua soil a couple plants and some wood. There’s a assassin snail keeping population down and I leave the shells in for calcium for my shrimp I’ve had such good luck
I feel like its a bit inaccurate to recommend "just tap water" as tap water varies by a lot depending on where you live. Other than that, great video! Been using leaves and I got my no-planeria meds just in case thanks to your advice!
I agree, I've learnt that my tap water is really soft (3 GH) and contains lots of copper (copper plumbing) ~0.25mg/l, which is like LD50 to neocardina, but is totally OK to human. Now I keep my blue velvets in storebought spring water (I'd have to go to another city for RO, and my tank is really small, so the best option turned out to buy cheap spring water in local grocery store and checking if it's params are alright). Now they are happy as ever.
Great video as always, a few questions though. 1. How much crushed coral do u need to add per gallon of water and does it need to be replaced often? 2. Are their any alternatives to the crushed coral, something that would would raise GH and KH of the tank to suitable levels. 3. And finally what would u recommend to feed them as a staple diet other than supplementary leaf litter, as in what food have u found has given u the most success in breeding cheery shrimps.
2- you can add gh+ (for caridina) or gh/kh+ (one for neocaridina and another for Sulawesi), there’s in salt and liquid. I use the salt from salty shrimp, but there’s also from Dennerle shrimp king and brightwell, for example.
1. Crushed coral: I use 250ml / 10 gal. Haven’t replaced it t in 3+ years. 3. Shrimp will eat almost anything. Powdered up flake food (I use old expired stuff laying around) feeds all sizes of shrimp in your tank. They like broccoli and zucchini a few times weekly, lightly boiled.
I use cuttlebone for adding minerals! It's inexpensive and usually in the bird section of pet stores. And for food any sinking fish food they'll love, I usually use sinking veggie or algae pellets and sinking catfish/shrimp pellets (yes shrimp like eating shrimp)
Love the video, found it really informative! I’ve had cherry shrimp in my tank for the past 6 months and could never get them to breed! There weren’t that many die offs and the tank I used was already cycled, but just couldn’t get them to breed at all. I had been doing weekly water changes, about 30-40% each week so I’ll heed your advice and only top up from now on. Hoping to see lots of babies in the future!
If they aren't breeding, 100% check your GH and KH as they are really important. They need to be drastically different for Neocaridina compare to caridina
Are you seeing saddled and berried shrimp and no babies or no saddles and eggs even? If you don't see any saddles and/or eggs, it means you have all males. If you see eggs but no babies, my bet is the shrimplets are starving to death before they become free swimming. Regularly add a pinch of powdered fish flakes to your tank and you should see a big improvement in 2-3 weeks. Check your GH, KH and pH though and make sure they are in the acceptable range for cherry shrimp too although if they are wildly off, you will probably be seeing deaths from failed molts. I have a 450L tank that I do weekly 50% water changes in. I have a few hundred cherry shrimp breeding like rabbits in there.
My KH is at 2, GH at 6 and pH is at 7. I have fluval stratum with some sand in the tank but it’s been nearly 2 years since I set it up. I’m confident I do have a good mix of males and females in my tank, I have roughly 12 red cherries in the tank (25cm cube). In terms of seeing shrimps with saddles, yes I have seen a few females with a yellow spot underneath their backs which I would assume is the saddle. However I’m not sure how weird it is to say this but I have rarely seen the female shrimps become berried with eggs. The shrimps do seem to be molting fine though, I see frequent exoskeletons laying around and very few die offs the past 6 months. The only thing I can think of would be the size of the tank itself, I know that a 25cm cube is really small and hence more sensitive to a bigger tank, and admittedly I don’t measure my GH and KH nearly enough. All in all, I have come to accept that this is all part of the hobby, but I’ll keep trying to get my shrimps to breed 😂 cheers and thanks for the advice!
@@Chrissolimmo I breed yellow and blue cherry shrimp in 20L tanks (weekly 10-20% water changes) so while the volume makes the tank more sensitive to changes, I am having success without doing many measurements. Hmm your KH, GH and pH are similar to mine so I am guessing that is OK. If you see a colour patch under the shell behind the head, that is the saddle. The female will molt in a safe place, release hormones and the males will start furiously swimming around looking for her. They mate and she moves the eggs from her back to her belly and hardens a new shell around the eggs. Sounds like the eggs are not surviving to attachment. That could be low protein as they use protein to make eggs. I feed shrimp snow (soy husks) that is high protein as well as a cheap powdered, high protein fish flake for the females and for newborns to feed and my 20L tanks are swarming with shrimp (e.g. for blue dreams I started with 10 adults about 4-5 months ago and now I have about 50 free swimming juveniles). If your adults are safely molting, you are doing most things right. It is just getting the eggs and babies to survive to free swimming. Good luck!
I have a question, if I don't do a water change, my TDS keeps increasing. Currently the TDS is at 700 range, what should I do? Water change or nah? There's no death currently even at this TDS level....
When I had them in a 3.5 gal and I'd do water changes, I'd use a small tube to steadily stream in the new water so they weren't shocked by the change. I hardly had any die offs because of that but the water I used was aged for a week or more in a 2 gallon jar I kept above their tank. Because the water has a lot of minerals in it, a lot of them would molt soon after a water change and I never had to supplement their calcium. It was already in my local tap water. But it had to be aged because the ammonia content in the water was deadly for them so it needed time to off-gas. It was best if it aged for two weeks minimum though but there were times I had to use it sooner than I liked. The more it was aged, the less die offs I'd have so only a week of aging did unfortunately kill one or two of them. The one time it didn't was because I'd put a couple drops of prime in both the waterchange jar and the tank.
Blue shrimps are beautiful. Blue is my favorite color. I remember I had a pair of ghost shrimp years ago. I would have the babies and the babies would live for months then they were gone. I had three sets of babies and they would disappear after a few months.
Personally I drip acclimate for 4 hours. If I'm spending $100 dollars on shrimp, I'm going to take my time with making sure they are safe and healthy. Also a great idea to have a PPM reader so you know when your water is roughly the same in the bowl as in the tank.
I highly disagree with not using substrate. Father fish/walstead method. No water changes only top offs. 1”soil to 3” of sand. Works amazing. I currently have a 20 gallon tall. 3 synodontis. 5 leopard danio, 8 or so guppy’s, clown pleco, and of course random snails. When the snails die their shells act very similar to the coral. Tank is heavily plantedand there is a thick layer of mulm . Started with 4 cherry shrimp about 2 months ago. Now I’ve got over 20 cherry shrimp

Great video! I could kick myself for using Fluval Stratum when starting my tank 2 years ago. It said it was great for shrimp, but obviously not for Neos. If I could replace it with an inert substrate without killing all my shrimp, I would. For now, I use Wonder Shells and a bit of crushed coral, and test my water. I have to do water changes to keep the pH from dropping, but they are kept to a minimum. Stupid me!
Is your yellow shrimp has solid and good yellow colour or they are lighter yellow and translucent? I started with 10, some very good yellow colour and some are little bit more translucent. They just breed and all baby yellow shrimps are more transparents. Will their colour get better? Also if they keep breeding, will their colour getting lighter and lighter from generations? Thanks.
I’m on well water and it’s very high in calcium. I wonder if this will benefit or be an issue for shrimp? Also,I use black blasting sand for my substrate. The 15 gallon tank I’m going to use has quite a few root plants with pelia and Java moss,and lots of water lettuce. I’ve got coconut hides,almond leaves,alder cones and wood. Any feedback on this setup would be greatly appreciated. Oh,and I also have dried mulberry leaves(green,not brown)to put in at some point.
If shrimp are in a joint tank with plants, tetras, betta.. would it still be better to not do water changes? I have a large water bubbler, double fall filter several plants, Java moss and a huge drift wood. Thank you

May I ask if you just top off the water what about the shrimps and their waste? I have subrate and have an issue that things would be going ok topping off for a month or 2 only until a few shrimps start dieing off 1 by 1 then id do a gravel vac and there was a ton of waste it seemed to keep my shrimp from dieing off. Does the waste get taken care of by some sort of natural cycle if there is no substrate?
i bought about 40 random shrimp and after a few weeks the females had saddles or were already carrying some eggs. i think i can tell the males and females apart now too. the males look less colorful and a little different and are usually flying around the tank looking for the females ready to breed lol
theyve bred hundreds of baby shrimp, it started in a tank without a filter and overgrown red root floaters and jungle val and now it has a filter but ive noticed this tank without a filter the shrimp population exploded, i have 4 other tanks with normal filtration and water changes and the shrimp ive moved to them havnt bred at all and they have heaters and the whole set ups

Maybe I can get a shrimp tank instead of a guppy tank. Been missing having an aquarium. Although, I would just add mussel shells instead of coral for calcium since it's what's available here in Sweden at beaches. Or maybe just aquascape with limestone (since it's a calcium based).... OR! If I find some fossil in limestone, that would be fun

Always check your water paramaters, only do minimal water changes if your paramaters are ok. Your tank uses KH and GH over time.

I have a pest snail tank, with aqua soil a couple plants and some wood. There’s a assassin snail keeping population down and I leave the shells in for calcium for my shrimp I’ve had such good luck
I feel like its a bit inaccurate to recommend "just tap water" as tap water varies by a lot depending on where you live. Other than that, great video! Been using leaves and I got my no-planeria meds just in case thanks to your advice!
Especially in places where they add chloramines like America
Where I live my GH is 25 and KH is 17. My issue with my tap water is actually my copper levels. It is lethal to most inverts.

I agree, I've learnt that my tap water is really soft (3 GH) and contains lots of copper (copper plumbing) ~0.25mg/l, which is like LD50 to neocardina, but is totally OK to human. Now I keep my blue velvets in storebought spring water (I'd have to go to another city for RO, and my tank is really small, so the best option turned out to buy cheap spring water in local grocery store and checking if it's params are alright). Now they are happy as ever.
Great video as always, a few questions though.
1. How much crushed coral do u need to add per gallon of water and does it need to be replaced often?
2. Are their any alternatives to the crushed coral, something that would would raise GH and KH of the tank to suitable levels.
3. And finally what would u recommend to feed them as a staple diet other than supplementary leaf litter, as in what food have u found has given u the most success in breeding cheery shrimps.

2- you can add gh+ (for caridina) or gh/kh+ (one for neocaridina and another for Sulawesi), there’s in salt and liquid.
I use the salt from salty shrimp, but there’s also from Dennerle shrimp king and brightwell, for example.
1. Crushed coral: I use 250ml / 10 gal. Haven’t replaced it t in 3+ years.
3. Shrimp will eat almost anything. Powdered up flake food (I use old expired stuff laying around) feeds all sizes of shrimp in your tank. They like broccoli and zucchini a few times weekly, lightly boiled.
I use cuttlebone for adding minerals! It's inexpensive and usually in the bird section of pet stores.
And for food any sinking fish food they'll love, I usually use sinking veggie or algae pellets and sinking catfish/shrimp pellets (yes shrimp like eating shrimp)

Love the video, found it really informative! I’ve had cherry shrimp in my tank for the past 6 months and could never get them to breed! There weren’t that many die offs and the tank I used was already cycled, but just couldn’t get them to breed at all. I had been doing weekly water changes, about 30-40% each week so I’ll heed your advice and only top up from now on. Hoping to see lots of babies in the future!
If they aren't breeding, 100% check your GH and KH as they are really important. They need to be drastically different for Neocaridina compare to caridina
Are you seeing saddled and berried shrimp and no babies or no saddles and eggs even? If you don't see any saddles and/or eggs, it means you have all males. If you see eggs but no babies, my bet is the shrimplets are starving to death before they become free swimming. Regularly add a pinch of powdered fish flakes to your tank and you should see a big improvement in 2-3 weeks. Check your GH, KH and pH though and make sure they are in the acceptable range for cherry shrimp too although if they are wildly off, you will probably be seeing deaths from failed molts.
I have a 450L tank that I do weekly 50% water changes in. I have a few hundred cherry shrimp breeding like rabbits in there.
My KH is at 2, GH at 6 and pH is at 7. I have fluval stratum with some sand in the tank but it’s been nearly 2 years since I set it up.
I’m confident I do have a good mix of males and females in my tank, I have roughly 12 red cherries in the tank (25cm cube). In terms of seeing shrimps with saddles, yes I have seen a few females with a yellow spot underneath their backs which I would assume is the saddle. However I’m not sure how weird it is to say this but I have rarely seen the female shrimps become berried with eggs. The shrimps do seem to be molting fine though, I see frequent exoskeletons laying around and very few die offs the past 6 months.
The only thing I can think of would be the size of the tank itself, I know that a 25cm cube is really small and hence more sensitive to a bigger tank, and admittedly I don’t measure my GH and KH nearly enough.
All in all, I have come to accept that this is all part of the hobby, but I’ll keep trying to get my shrimps to breed 😂 cheers and thanks for the advice!
@@Chrissolimmo I breed yellow and blue cherry shrimp in 20L tanks (weekly 10-20% water changes) so while the volume makes the tank more sensitive to changes, I am having success without doing many measurements.
Hmm your KH, GH and pH are similar to mine so I am guessing that is OK.
If you see a colour patch under the shell behind the head, that is the saddle. The female will molt in a safe place, release hormones and the males will start furiously swimming around looking for her. They mate and she moves the eggs from her back to her belly and hardens a new shell around the eggs.
Sounds like the eggs are not surviving to attachment. That could be low protein as they use protein to make eggs. I feed shrimp snow (soy husks) that is high protein as well as a cheap powdered, high protein fish flake for the females and for newborns to feed and my 20L tanks are swarming with shrimp (e.g. for blue dreams I started with 10 adults about 4-5 months ago and now I have about 50 free swimming juveniles).
If your adults are safely molting, you are doing most things right. It is just getting the eggs and babies to survive to free swimming. Good luck!

I have a question, if I don't do a water change, my TDS keeps increasing. Currently the TDS is at 700 range, what should I do? Water change or nah?
There's no death currently even at this TDS level....
When I had them in a 3.5 gal and I'd do water changes, I'd use a small tube to steadily stream in the new water so they weren't shocked by the change. I hardly had any die offs because of that but the water I used was aged for a week or more in a 2 gallon jar I kept above their tank. Because the water has a lot of minerals in it, a lot of them would molt soon after a water change and I never had to supplement their calcium. It was already in my local tap water. But it had to be aged because the ammonia content in the water was deadly for them so it needed time to off-gas. It was best if it aged for two weeks minimum though but there were times I had to use it sooner than I liked. The more it was aged, the less die offs I'd have so only a week of aging did unfortunately kill one or two of them. The one time it didn't was because I'd put a couple drops of prime in both the waterchange jar and the tank.
Great advice, I feel like the best advice is let ‘em be when don’t mess with the tank often

Blue shrimps are beautiful. Blue is my favorite color. I remember I had a pair of ghost shrimp years ago. I would have the babies and the babies would live for months then they were gone. I had three sets of babies and they would disappear after a few months.

Personally I drip acclimate for 4 hours. If I'm spending $100 dollars on shrimp, I'm going to take my time with making sure they are safe and healthy. Also a great idea to have a PPM reader so you know when your water is roughly the same in the bowl as in the tank.
Also been feeding em zucchini they swarm it like mad and the population has been blowing up ever since I started giving em a slice per day 👌
I highly disagree with not using substrate. Father fish/walstead method. No water changes only top offs. 1”soil to 3” of sand. Works amazing. I currently have a 20 gallon tall. 3 synodontis. 5 leopard danio, 8 or so guppy’s, clown pleco, and of course random snails. When the snails die their shells act very similar to the coral. Tank is heavily plantedand there is a thick layer of mulm . Started with 4 cherry shrimp about 2 months ago. Now I’ve got over 20 cherry shrimp

I have a few other tanks and I was thinking of adding a sponge filter from an established tank. Also, do you feed any organic veggies like peas or zucchini? Mulberry leaves are great for just feeding the shrimp. I notice my shrimp will choose a mulberry leaf over any other food I offer.

Great video! I could kick myself for using Fluval Stratum when starting my tank 2 years ago. It said it was great for shrimp, but obviously not for Neos. If I could replace it with an inert substrate without killing all my shrimp, I would. For now, I use Wonder Shells and a bit of crushed coral, and test my water. I have to do water changes to keep the pH from dropping, but they are kept to a minimum. Stupid me!

Is your yellow shrimp has solid and good yellow colour or they are lighter yellow and translucent? I started with 10, some very good yellow colour and some are little bit more translucent. They just breed and all baby yellow shrimps are more transparents. Will their colour get better? Also if they keep breeding, will their colour getting lighter and lighter from generations? Thanks.

May I ask if you just top off the water what about the shrimps and their waste? I have subrate and have an issue that things would be going ok topping off for a month or 2 only until a few shrimps start dieing off 1 by 1 then id do a gravel vac and there was a ton of waste it seemed to keep my shrimp from dieing off. Does the waste get taken care of by some sort of natural cycle if there is no substrate?

i bought about 40 random shrimp and after a few weeks the females had saddles or were already carrying some eggs. i think i can tell the males and females apart now too. the males look less colorful and a little different and are usually flying around the tank looking for the females ready to breed lol
theyve bred hundreds of baby shrimp, it started in a tank without a filter and overgrown red root floaters and jungle val and now it has a filter but ive noticed this tank without a filter the shrimp population exploded, i have 4 other tanks with normal filtration and water changes and the shrimp ive moved to them havnt bred at all and they have heaters and the whole set ups

Maybe I can get a shrimp tank instead of a guppy tank. Been missing having an aquarium. Although, I would just add mussel shells instead of coral for calcium since it's what's available here in Sweden at beaches. Or maybe just aquascape with limestone (since it's a calcium based).... OR! If I find some fossil in limestone, that would be fun
