Finally, after 6 years of self-teaching, I'm getting vibrato. The easiest way that I found which worked for me was to "open" my thumb and relaxing the grip on the neck of the violin. FINALLY!

hello. this is to say thank you and not only for your videos. i am a 13 year old girl from Scotland who loves to play violin. i started off with really easy pieces and soon wanted to get a lot better as i felt i has holding back on my abilities. i looked up some easy modern songs to play and your channel popped up. i instantly fell in love. soon at my school my music instructor said there was a place for a violinist to play a solo in front of thousands of people at a show outside my town. i had to play 2 good pieces and so i went to you. i played hanging tree (which is now my favorite thing to play on violin) and he's a pirate (which i made a few mistakes on in the audition but no one needs to know that) i got the solo and am really happy. i couldn't have done it without you or your channel. my show is tomorrow. thank you xxx

Number three just taught me that I've been holding my violin incorrectly for almost four years. I'm glad that I know now but I feel like I've wasted so much time being confused and trying to move on while only having a subpar understanding of some of the basics. This video is very helpful, thank you.

My new chin rest is such a big difference, sometimes it's a different shoulder rest, or none. Once that's down you can concentrate on what's important.:)

I just discovered this video and I hope it will help solve my problem. I started playing the violin in my teens and always had problems doing vibrato. After not touching the instrument for years I started practicing again when my daughter had her first lesson with my former violin teacher. I’m still not able to do the vibrato properly and I’m having problems helping my daughter acquire it. Anyway I see her taking benefits from your videos though she’s not able to understand English very well. But she’s taking a lot from the demonstrations. Thank you ☺️

4.5 months into learning violin my teacher thinks it's a good idea for me to start attempting vibrato on whole and half notes. Going to take a while before it develops into sounding good. I've got the basics down and started 3rd position work.

You are absolutely correct, and that’s how I want to learn vibrato! My first teacher played guitar, teaching violin. He taught me the “ jackhammer vibrato”, and another way by bending the string sideways like a guitar. I did this until someone at the Highland games said it sounded like rubbish, and showed me like you teach it. I’m back to the beginning again. Thank you!

i tried doing vibrato using the same technique as you would do on a guitar (i.e. the movement is mainly from the knuckle rather than the wrist). And it sort of works...it sounds okay, but the whole violin will visibly bounce around all over the place. This seems wrong and also looks rather silly so I should probably quit messing around with that and wait until I am ready to do it properly! Thanks to this video I will have a better idea of when I have reached that point

There's no reason to rush that, so I'll try to master that a little better. I don't know how much this video is going to help me, but at least it gave me a little more patience, so thanks a lot for that!

Back when I took violin course, I think it's past 2 years and I've changed teachers a few times.. if not mistaken I had one told me my fingers/hand aren't/isn't strong enough yet so it'll take time. Also I started learning just when I was about to stop because I was graduating and moving out soon lol. So I can't say I can do it well. When I started learning few years later I pretty much had to start from the basic (though not very beginner level).. anyway it's just me rambling haha. Thanks I love your videos and you're a stunning lady!

Thank you, Allison! I am just beginning to learn without a proper teacher and I was worried that if I didn't learn vibrato early on that it would be more difficult later, but it seems this isn't so. What a relief, because I am NOT good at it right now, and my bow starts skidding up and down the strings when I try :/ So I will cease and desist my vibrato-ing for the time being and just focus on good strong notes without screeching.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes thats a good idea. Even thought you said yes to the points, if you are still not ready the violin will shake a lot, and the bow will skid etc. That means you still need more time.

Allison, I find your videos the best of all, and this lesson on vibrato has helped me greatly. I've been performing wrist exercises for about a year to develop a vibrato and am still not there, but I am patient because it's well worth the effort. I agree that vibrato should not be attempted until the basics such as intonation, bowing, etc., have been mastered. That was my mistake :(, I started too soon. Thanks for enlightening us. By the way I now use a metronome when practicing vibrato, it helps to develop consistency, at least I think so :).

Hi Alison - I have the five basics down, and then some, having played the violin for more than two years now, but sad to say I still can't do vibrato. I know what you mean when you said, "Vibrato does make a violin sound a lot nicer..." I also play the harmonica, and being able to bend notes and use vibrato really brings the harmonica to that advance level. But whenever I try vibrato on the violin, it's not the violin that shakes -- but it’s my bow hand that involuntarily shakes. Until I can learn vibrato correctly, I'll continue to play my violin as a fiddle using, when desired, pizzicato and staccato in lieu of vibrato. BTW: I can do a fake finger vibrato on the violin, but (as you know) that doesn't count. 😉 🎻 ♫

That's kind of reassuring to know that it might be too soon for me. Thanks! Wishing there was a download section for may be a kind of 'handout' notes. :)
Need to write down those 5 points. If anyone wants, they could copy-paste from here to wherever they take notes.
    1. Do you know the notes in the first position (open strings are ok).
    2. Can you play without the aid of dots/tapes/stickers?
    3. Is your left hand free while playing, without the palm holding the violin (guess it has to do with how firm the violin sits in the neck without having to additionally support it with the left hand)
    4. Are u playing with the tip of your fingers pressing on the strings? and
    5. Do you have good intonation (are u hitting the right notes and not a B-sharp!?)?
    Thanks Alison :)

I have been learning for 7 months, and I understand all the first position, including the half steps. Only the 4th finger is still a bit hard for me, yet I still can locate it.
My wrist is on correct position also. My intonation is good. And I put nicely on my fingertips. I haven't stripped the marks on my fiddle, though still I can play 1st position with my eyes closed.
I have tried small experiments for doing wrist vibrato. It works on my 2nd and 3rd finger on any strings, though I still need more control on bowing. Cuz, I feel awkward when moving both hands independently for having any vibrato.
I need to strengthen my basic more, because when doing vibrato sometimes my fingertips slipped a bit higher, a fourth note I think.

I analyzed that my knuckles are just way too stiff and untrained... so i did stuff like holding one finger and moving the wrist away, whilst keeping the knuckle loose..... waving at myself in a backward move (arm stiff) which solved the problem with bowing and vibrato at the same time (movement became natural).... stuff you can do at work or anywhere (looks stupid)... 2 weeks non violin practice and i got a kind of decent vibrato. I am a fast learner but violin vibrato was a real challenge to trick/relax my fingers or better said my wrist. In my opinion, you shouldn´t start with vibrato... but doing yoga with your knuckles will make it 10 times easier once you wanna try it.

I've been playing for 6 months now. I've practiced every day for around 5 hours per week. I've mastered 1-4 but I recently got a new violin and didn't put stickers on it. My intonation needed some adjustment. It's net yet perfect but not bad. I use cleartune to assist with intonation.
I've given vibrato a go for a few minutes here and there. I even managed a half second of half decent sounding vibrato. The weird thing is that I find myself doing vibrato in the guitar and singing, but no where near yet on the violin.

Wow, I have never really wanted to jump into vibrato because I always thought it was too early. As a violinist with around three years of experience I answered yes to all these, which was shocking to me, I guess I just need more confidence in my skills. Thanks to you I am now going to try and take the plunge into learning vibrato. Wish me luck!!!

It's been 3 weeks since I started playing the violin. I can do the G major scale (first position w/4th finger) without the stickers as I dont need them. It's not so perfect though. But still, I can barely say yes to all of the five points. I can tell right away if my intonation is wrong, then adjust my finger to get the right note.

I started learning vibrato around the end of my 3rd year (which was shaky) and really actually started being able to use it at the middle/end of my 4th year. But I think people who practice more than I did could probably do it by the 2nd/3rd.

You are awesome, i love your tutorials! Clear and understandable Speaking, and descriptive explaining! But in my opinion i find your voice a little bit to quietly in comparition when you play (then it is very loud), so i often need to toggle the volume up and down. Kind regards from Germany.

My viola still has tapes, but now I never see those tapes while playing. My tapes also have been fading away, yet I still can locate the correct tune. So, i think now it is the time to learn vibrato. 😸
The other questions are just: yes 😺
    ~should i migrate to violin... 😹

Hi Allison, I love your tutorials! The are so very helpful! I have looked for a video on dealing with humidity and I haven't seen any. Maybe you have done one and I missed it?
Well I live in a place in Canada where the temperature has been hanging around 40 (Celsius) with 90% humidity for weeks now (yes, "humid" has been the understatement of the summer!). My violin has been holding up with the Air Conditioning going but when I was playing at church yesterday I noticed the tone was WAY off. To make a long story short I tuned my violin to 430hz with my chromatic tuner and although the sound wasn't perfect it was much better. (I had to avoid playing pizzicato because it did not sound right but the sound when bowing improved)
I don't know if anyone else has had to deal with anything like this but I expect many have! Do yo have any other tips for dealing with humidity or other elements?
I am guessing retuning is an extreme measure??
Maybe some of your global online students have also dealt with this?
Thanks for all your work and dedication to helping us struggling aspiring musicians around the world improve our playing!

At first, I completely failed at learning vibrato, but I got it on my first try until I realized one of my mistakes! My hand and arm weren't straight, and the bottom of my palm would touch the bottom of the fingerboard! I just had to correct my left hand posture, and it was never easier.

So with regards to improving on the basics, is there anything in particular that you yould recommend, even from past videos or is it something that really just comes with experience and time playing? I only started learning in March and I haven't really gotten around to practicing since moving to university, (kind of because practicing for actual improvement is actually kind of a confidence breaker, but there's school too.)

Im on my 2nd year of viola and im 12 now but I did violin when I was 9 or 10 for 1 year... I forgot everything then moved onto viola... I still need to work on intonation because I practice on my sister's violin and a viola on weekends. The violin is tinier than my viola so I need to get used to different sizes. Am I in the right time to do vibrato?

Hi, I just started playing the Violin a couple of weeks (2-3) ago, and have been learning through self teaching..well of course by watching your wonderful violin tutorials, though I got my hands on a set of basic Suzuki book volume 1-5 ( but currently still in volume 1 of course). Watching violin covers (includes yours) really makes me want to get the hand of vibrato quickly :(, sounds so nice and really gives the piece a more some what "improving" sound...but I guess since I just started a month ago, I guess I shouldn't really yet start learning vibrato???.....and first learn all five volumes first???....

+Nex Kizhuna Hi Nex, please wait for vibrato. Even though your comment was made a while back, it is currently still too early (if you're still in book 1). You need to keep on the tapes for intonation, since you cannot do vibrato without intonation. If my teacher heard you trying to do vibrato with not very good intonation, she would stop you very quickly haha.
Also, please be careful when learning vibrato! If you do it incorrectly, it is extremely difficult to correct it.
