1. Make sure only your finger is touching the violin (not sides of finger on violin’s neck) 2. Hold violin correctly, make sure it is secure so you’re can hold it up with your neck (use shoulder rest??) 3. Stiffness and over gripping of left hand causes problems. Just roll finger for wrist vibrato. 4. Don’t over tighten collarbone and jaw when holding violin. 5. Try taking thumb away from left hand when doing vibrato. (Use weight of hand) 6. Practice and experiment by putting violin against wall (or someone holding) and discover what movement you need for vibrato. 7. Movement comes from wrist, keep it flexible. But don’t center movement from wrist (rolling finger). 8. Relax and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!
Alison, I was having a heck of a time trying to learn vibrato until I realized that my violin arm was positioned away from my body. When I moved my arm more under the violin, the hand and fingers were in perfect position to roll my fingers. Just something I noticed and it worked for me.
Thank you so much for this video. I played as a kid from grades 3-9, but stopped after that. I never had private lessons so I was never really stellar at it, but I loved it so much. In high school I realized how far behind I was without those private lessons and since I knew lessons wouldn’t be possible I chose a different direction, sadly. I never lost my love for music and I’m glad to say that I recently picked up the violin after 23 years. I’ve been rusty, for sure, but at least I’m playing. Mastering vibrato has been high on my priority list and the shaking was really discouraging. Thank you for your advice. I know my issue is tension and quite possibly the index finger is touching the fingerboard so I’ll focus my attention on that. Thank you so very much for your help.
Thank you a million times! This video has solved several problems for me! First, I have been working on vibrato for months and had gotten a little bit, but my movement was still so small and tense. Second, I am a violin clincher. I have always known this and have mentioned this to teachers/violinists and they never corrected me on my violin hold. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't relax my hand. But, you demonstrated exactly how I hold the violin (about 2:30) and what was wrong with it. So, I still have to build this into a new habit, but I have worked for the past hour or so on changing that and it is like a miracle! My hand is relaxed and my vibrato comes just like I have wanted! My movement is so full and the vibrato so evident now. The relax in my fingers also gets a better sound from my violin. It is amazing how moving my hand away from the violin a bit changes my hold and loosens everything up. Thank you so very much for the help!
you weren't kidding when you said it can take months. some practice sessions I cant get it at all, some sessions I get it really good, but tension always creeps back into my hand, especially when trying to vibrate on the G and D strings. thanks for the tips!
I learned how to do vibrato by practicing every week when i have time and when i bought a shoulder rest i can easily do vibrato without shaking, This is really helpful, Thank you!
This video addressed everything I've been doing wrong while attempting vibrato. Thank you so much, I've already improved a bit within an hour of practicing your advice. As a self-learner, I didn't even realize my fingers were so pressed up against the neck!
Agreed. I like to do and try everything before I open my mouth and comment on it! Nothing worse than a music teaching commenting on things they know nothing about or have not even tried before!
By the 6.40 mark I did my first vibrato; right after you said, you might be holding the violin too tightly with your left hand. I had a death grip on it. Relaxed... Vibrato happened! Very happy and thanks for great tuition.
Excellent, very helpful. However my teacher for some reason taught me arm vibrato. A little more difficult in the lower positions but with time and dedication I got it
Thank you so much! This helped me very much, i now realise that my index finger was touching the violin when i was trying vibrato for the other fingers causing the violin to shake!!! :)
Hey Alison (tutor)! I love the way u teach! It's really inspiring and very descriptive! Gives a bang on understanding! U seem to be a very sweet and down to earth person.. I respect that 😊 PS- I'm still on lessons 7-8.. trying to learn and practice vibrato from now! Thank you so much!
Tnx... Actually the first one you mentioned is really my problem because I thought that it is wrong when you put your thumb below the neck. Now I am able to do vibrato without shaking it
Very helpful video when I relaxed the violin stopped shaking with me. I was putting way to much pressure and force than what was needed and pulling the violin away from my neck. This helped a bunch ty. Also your videos are extremely helpful I live in a town without any type of violin teacher or tutor so I have to rely on youtube and all the books on amazon. Started watching your videos the day I bought my violin and now can play most basic to intermediate pieces.
Thank you for your great ideas, analysis and practice tips in 11 minutes. One of the best videos I've seen to improve vibrato plus you are realistic about being patient over the time it takes to develop muscle memory. Thanks!
The neck of my fiddle would shake occasionally because the lower-joint of my my left thumb has a decades-old injury. But I wont let it hamper my desire to learn. Thanks so much for all your content.
Thanks to the first tip, I did my first wrist vibrato correctly. Finally I managed. I must say, the hand (some muscles) quite hurt after that, I guess I need to learn using them. Wow.
Thanks for the tips! I've started practicing vibrato without having my thumb touch the neck of the violin to start out. You helped me totally realize that when my fingers touched the neck that the violin would shake! I had no idea that was the cause.. I am actually starting to hear some vibrato from the technique you explained, but it makes me have to push my chin down harder on the chin rest to keep the violin up, and i feel lots of tension in my left arm when I play with my thumb not touching the neck of the violin. Like you explained, that's a problem too. What do you think I could be doing wrong? Do you think I need to adjust my shoulder rest? Whenever i play the violin at all, i have to keep my chin pressed down to keep the violin straight and from slumping down. Could I be pressing my finger on the fingerboard too hard?
It might be the shoulder rest. A lot of cheap rests are too low and therefore cause to much pressure on the chin and shoulder. You also may be attempting vibrato too soon? Or generally gripping too much.
The more I practice this, the harder it seems to not touch the neck of the violin with my hand at all. :/ Even when supporting it firmly with my shoulder, it doesn't seem possible to touch it with only the tip of the finger doing the vibrato and the thumb. D:
Im so confused I tried the first solution but it didn't work. The other solutions don't apply to me but I tried vibrato with the contact of my first finger on the fingerboard and my violin didn't shake at all. I just dont want to be using the wrong techniques. Ive been playing for 7 years and im just trying to stop any bad habits because my teacher never really did anything to point them out. Heck I only figured out the meaning of a sharp and a flat were. beforeI was just playing by ear.
A bit of a silly question. I've been playing for a little over 4 years, and I still haven't learned vibrato. My teacher won't teach us vibrato until next year, and I think that's a bit too long. Should I wait until he teaches us vibrato, or should I try it on my own?

Hi Alison. I love your videos I play the violin and stay all the way in South Africa. I would just like to find out if you can post a few videos for the advanced students but all in all this is awesome.
Thanks for this video. At first I thought my shaking problem was just my bow not being steady enough but then I realized that it was my vibrato. I’m having more trouble with shaking while I’m playing in higher positions (3rd, 4th, etc.) and with my 4th finger. Any tips???
@@mariedenivelle8248 move your elbow outwards towards where you're facing. Don't keep it there for the entirety of your session, just when you play on the G. Goodluck!
Are you resting the neck on your thumb as per the video? If I do this the violin becomes unplayable. My best vibrato comes from when I rest the violin on my wrist as it provides a nice stable platform for vibrato to be played in the same fashion as what's being showed here funnily enough. According to some this is sacrilegious, but for me it results in easier and better playing.
It took me perhaps 1 or 2 months to start vibrato. U should mention the importance of placement of thumb. If we keep thumb right under the vibrato finger the violin will shake; so thumb should always be behind d fingers; not at same place or forward.

Great Alison. Given that we don't want one hold for general playing, and another hold for vibrato, do you mean that the index finger NOT touching the neck should be a position which is always held while playing, so one position hold only? Thank you.
You will have one hold for the violin whether you do or don’t do vibrato. This is why one doesn’t learn or attempt vibrato until a minimum of 1 year of playing.
If people are thinking violin vibrato is as easy as an electric guitar, then they'll be unhappy. Also, playing any fretted instrument requires significant thumb counterbalance force. Most guitar vibrato is 90 degrees opposite of a violin. It's just a very difficult transition from a fretted instrument to a violin.
I don’t do anything on this list could it be because I have scoliosis that my violin is shaking because my left shoulder is significantly higher than my right? Also I’ve been playing for 5 years so I think I have the basics down by now.
you need callouses and smooth finger tips. cause there is far too much friction on my finger tips and i just jab myself in the neck over and over again.
I was playing a solo piece for my school orchestra teacher and one of his comments was that my violin was shaking while I was doing vibrato. It was something I had never thought about before. This video has helped me a lot and I am thinking about changing the way my left hand grips the violin, as I have always wrapped my thumb all the way around instead of placing it underneath (idk how to describe it). I’ve been practicing like that since I started playing (6 years I think) so it’s gonna be difficult but it’s worth a shot, right? I tried it out for a few minutes and immediately saw improvement, but it’s hard to keep my wrist in that position. I wonder if this is right or if what I was doing before was fine 😭 Edit: wait, I might be good. I’m gonna check with my private teacher when I see her again
Update: I think I did it, but I find it extremely hard to not touch the neck with my hand/fingers (keeping space between them and the neck) on the g string if that makes sense, and it’s still shaking a lot. Do you have any advice for the lower strings?
How do I stop shaking? I simply place one hand over the center of my chest, take a nice deep breath, and I repeat the following: I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me!
You said you move your shoulder up to hold the violin, does your shoulder get tired? I don't use a shoulder rest either, but sometimes I worried it will fall. I wonder if I should just move my shoulder to get a better grip, but I think I might get tired.
Would it be helpful to practice this in front of a mirror? That way, you could see what you may be doing wrong... I really enjoyed this video, thanks a bunch!
This video made me realize that my hand left hand placement has been wrong for all these years...Thank you so much!
1. Make sure only your finger is touching the violin (not sides of finger on violin’s neck)

Not technically, but only in terms of you not holding the instrument correctly and affecting your ability to do vibrato that way.
This helped a lot!
You said you move your shoulder up to hold the violin, does your shoulder get tired? I don't use a shoulder rest either, but sometimes I worried it will fall. I wonder if I should just move my shoulder to get a better grip, but I think I might get tired.
Yinmui Chan Nope. Been playing for over 30 years, and its not tiring yet :))
Will you make a piano pedal tutorial?
Yes. I did one a several years ago.
thank you so much👍

Another amazing lesson. Thank you! :)
Would it be helpful to practice this in front of a mirror? That way, you could see what you may be doing wrong...
