I think the slowed down sounds like a siren, and the actual vibrato sounds like the buzzing of a bee! I'm just starting out, so I'm getting the siren down so far! Little by little I improve....Thanks for all the guidance!!
Buzzing of the bee sound is a change in amplitude. It vibrates the loudness as highs and lows. The siren sound is a change in frequency. It vibrates the pitch as highs and lows.
This is EXACTLY what I've been doing wrong. My mind just automatically commands my finger to "pulse" the string as you said. My mentor has been struggling to teach me for the longest time. Haha! Thanks for this video! Helps me in keeping me motivated to master Vibrato.
Fester Blats Yep I play guitar. And instinctually want to do this for my violin vibrato. I'm going to try and break it. But hey doesn't sound too bad to me lol.
Alison’s vibrato is how I was taught. If you watch Heifetz, Menuhin, and Perlman violin masterclass videos, they too are finger nail to nail vibrato. Thank you Alison!
Vibrato is really the important aspect of playing violin and you have beautifully explained how to attain that. Thank you so much Alison. I am Zafar. God bless you
I'm a teacher myself and I've had so many pupils do that stupid finger vibrato thinking they've mastered it. Took me years to learn how to do it properly (when I was a lot younger may I add, and I'm still not great at it). Thanks for putting this up and getting the message out!
+Kitty Plum I KNOW! It was driving me round the bloody bend! I see a lot of comments on youtube with people saying they have 'nailed it in a week', but you and i both know they have not as it takes months and months to really click and settle in to the point where one can manipulate the vibrato - hence the reason for this video! Point your students to this video in the future if they dont believe you lol :))
Having a top camera view of the violin while doing vibrato would've been really helpful for me (I'm not sure about others) to see how it's done properly
Great idea! Im going to do an updated video of this so I will add that in too. I didnt have a contraption that would enable me to film overhead at the time of making my previous vibrato videos, so it didnt occur to me.
I love the the tudor video for violin i play electric guitar my grandfather play violin when I was a child I took this up late in life age of 54 keep up with the good work dear. Thank John
Alison, you are a darlin, milady. I love your videos! I am relearning violin after a long stretch of not playing and thanks to you, I am well on my way to playing again. It took me about six months to get it down but, I have a decent vibrato now. Thank you for taking the time to help struggling fiddlers. :)
Hey I contacted you a while ago on what I should do about my broken violin and upon taking your advice I now have a beautiful sounding antique violin. I'd like to thank you very much for responding and giving me advice! Your channel is very well made and I love what you're doing. Keep it up!
Your videos really help me a lot. I've started playing last week actually, and I remember not knowing how to hold the bow XD I'm really starting to get better and whenever I have a question I just look your channel up because everything is explained nicely, accurately and even demonstrated. Thank you!!
+Adzedeoxnomber500 Its not that I wont, its just a very very niche song and on its own, it can come across as a little boring. I will do it if i get a lot of requests, but I have not had any so far.
+The Online Piano and Violin Tutor I wonder if he/she isn't actually asking if you can play the choral part from Lacrimosa (re-)arranged for violin the way the string quartet "Il Quartetto d'archi Gagliano" has done elsewhere on TH-cam. Can't imagine why anyone would want to hear the original violin part on its own. It's about as complicated as "Hot Cross Buns."
You saved me for my concert since we are playing Ashokan farewell and I have a violin solo and I was supposed to learn vibrato but I couldn’t really do it but you saved me thanks. you earned a subscriber
Hi Alison, I came across your channel because I am doing some research about "when, why & how" string players use articulations in order to program realistic string arrangements. Although I certainly realize that this is quite impossible, your teachings are very helpful to me. Thank you for sharing. You are an angel!
radiantxdreamer lol same exept I actually play the violin lol but flute is cool. For vibrsto on flute I just "pulse" my airstream idk if it's correct or not
I play violin but i am very very interested in flute. Im going to pick up flute as my next instrument. Too bad its too hard to find a flute teacher in my place.
You're awesome! You point out the most important techniques that make a world of a difference! Why can't violin teachers do the same? A few of mine never have. Thank you for your caring enough to share these very helpful tips for free!!
So I'm doing my vibrato right and I have for years but It still doesn't sound as rich and beautiful as yours :( I wish I knew a good practice routine to really perfect my skills.
I have been doing vibrato incorrectly by pressing down on the strings onto the fingerboard, but now I believe I will be able to get the hang of it thanks to this video
Okay, you definitely put most teachers I've had to shame. I forgot if it's this video or your other 'how to do vibrato' video but the "focus on one end of the nail to the other" is definitely helping! And I've definitely been doing it the wrong way for a while but I guess when you self-teach, bad habits like these can develop. Awesome tutorial!
i was pulsing the vibrato through school and my violin teacher never picked it up :( now I picked up the violin again and learning vibrato correctly and its so much more satisfying.
I remember back when I first started self teaching myself vibrato I started with the wrong way, but only because I couldn't do it fast enough, I already knew vibrato was the rolling, I just couldn't do it without slipping, but once I got better at violin, I kinda learned the right way before I knew it, I actually can't remember how or when I started doing it the right way, it kinda just happened. Although lately I've been having a problem with moving my violin on accident while doing vibrato, sometimes.
This helped me out a lot. I do not do vibrato the wrong way I just can't do it. But now i know what sounds to aim for when practicing. It is kinda like playing a fast music piece; you start slow, then get faster
No, I only do wrist. I cant do the others as it doesnt work like that Its like asking me to write a letter with my left hand or learn to write with my left hand (im right handed). Its almost impossible - if you see what I mean. There are only really 2 main types - wrist and arm and you will learn whatever you naturally gravitate towards.
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor oh ok - is it ok if you make a video on practicing your vibrato in making it faster? Because I grasped onto the technique fairly quickly and I can do it somewhat fast, but I'm having trouble doing it "naturally and fast"
That, is a video I cannot make as I can already do vibrato. I cant show you something I can already do and how I learnt it - do you see what I mean? I know im not explaining that well, but its like unlearning how to drive a car and completely forgetting everything I know, then doing it all again and taking through my emotions and how I got better. Do I make more sense? lol
My vibrato is evolving, differently on each finger and string, but evolving. What's happening to me is that as I gain more strenght on the left hand my vibrato gets better,. As I roll the finger it also goes up and down due to lack of strenght. Kind of a mix of both correct and incorrect shown on the video. As I gain more strenght and carisma I expect to keep the string well pressed always. Thank you for the video.
Thanks! I remember spending a couple of days in a hotel where one of my neighbours was obviously learning to play the violin. It sounded like a bunch of cats was being tortured. Now that I've remembered it, I realise that it was him or her practising vibrato and doing it wrong. :D
I've been playing for less than a year. I've been doing the "wrong" vibrato all along, knowing full well I was cheating. To be honest, I've become quite good at it, but I've just now repented. :P Is there a name for that technique though? I've always wondered...
Chris White i was doing it the wrong way lol...2 yrs ago i started playing again after not playing since i was in high school (im 53). bit i got myself a teacher...and she broke it to me lol the teachers i had as a child never taught me vibratto...dont know why...i asked them...oh well at least i am learning it as an adult...the correct way😊
I decided to not have that headache until I cut all the other Gordian knots on the violin. In the moment I start integrating that into my technique, it will be a set back and a struggle for a long time. I will have to tell my MixTape buddies: "Sorry guys, I can't join for months to come-I'm dying." I started with trills in August and can do that now, but am still working on it. That's just a matter of getting strength into my fingers, vibrato seems to be a matter of not going completely crazy. I can 't play the violin if it's shaking-even if it's only a little bit. But as I'm in love especially with the 30s when it comes to jazz and popular music, I'm bound to solve that problem one day. Until then I say, "I do modern and need no vibrato, damn!" ;o)
Thank you for sharing ! I'm a tiny beginner yet, but I will get that vibrato. I will. Let's do this. There will be tears shed by neighbours and by my roommate but YOLO.
OK,l love this video. But l've been playing the Violin for a year and half now and l have never really tried the real vibrato, kind of sacred l won't do it,but thanks to this video, l will put my best effort to make it work. Thanks!
It's coming along but it sometimes feels like I'm pulling the violin away from my chin. Too much grip and not enough roll? The first and third fingers seem to be much more difficult.
I do vibrato the "right way" but it's not as loose and relaxed as it could be. I still can't do 4th finger vibrato or 1st finger in half position (like an f natural on the e string)
I played violin for 10 years and took private lessons. I always knew I was doing vibrato wrong but teachers were like sounds fine to me. Like, bruh it's so wrong. Still can't properly do it :(
Your vibrato instruction video is excellent....combined with exercises for "sliding" scales, (hand position), developing vibrato comes very easily.....I think when I was initially shown this, without exercises to actually learn the motion, it was too complex to imagine performing. With discipline, and some much better counsel, Thank You!!, I find it coming very nicely!! More easily than I'd have thought. For years as a "substitute", I used more drone, or chords to mask the absence - yes, lazy!!! But, in my defense, it IS my FUN instrument, and I play only for myself....but every musician has a point of perfection.....lol....Now, even for myself, I want to move into more interesting territory.... *a note about some of the instructional videos available here on youtube.....as a lifelong musician, and adult student, I have watched a variety that will only frustrate and deter - especially younger - students!!
I think i have a mixture of the wrong and the right one? Or have perfected the wrong one. Because no teacher ever pointed out my mistake and it actually sounds really nice; not like when you are doing the pulsing. The only reason i thought i was doing something wrong was because it wasnt as rich as the one of others, but otherwise it is very pleasent
i have been playing the violin for 10 years but nobody taught me vibrato so i decided to learn myself. I couldnt do the right one because it was really hard so i started to do the wrong one. When i do it people love it and they say there is no difference and i dont hear any difference honestly. (my violin teacher passed away 5 years ago and i dont want another teacher so i dont take any lessons.)
I have been playing for something like five year with little to no practice. But my question is, how do i get my hand wrist to rotate around far enough. while i rotate my hand in and around, my palm is perpendicular to my view.
Perhaps you need a shoulder rest to help you, or you are holding the violin incorrectly, or gripping too hard. Without being able to see you, I cant say for sure.
I practically have to take my whole hand off of the neck, to get the correct motion, my finger looks like it's crawling over the peg board, the back and forth rolling motion I am trying to get looks really goofy. I do notice it is loosening up a little, but the arthritis just isn't cooperative. I've been playing a little over 3 months, twenty years ago this wouldn't have been a problem.
But the question is how to speed up the wrist vibrato?? I think I have a decent vibrato but for the life of me I can’t get it to speed up to get a really focused sound.
I do the old person self-taught "string wiggle" vibrato. It doesn't sound as bad as shown on your video but I realize it isn't correct. But when I attempt to do it correctly (with my wrist) it always feels as though I'm going to drop the violin. So apparently I have problems. :-D
I've seen people actually bend the strings slightly.... like they are playing the guitar or something. Yes, the pitch does change, but it has the same effects as the "pulsing"....
my stand partner in orchestra class does the vibrato the wrong way....I don't know how to break it to her....
Next time she does it, slap her, put your phone on her stand and play this video.
omg kpop fannnnnnn
Omg same!!

Ha that I will!
OMG !!! They should rename vibrato to mosquito . Training this will gathering all of them around into my bedroom XD .
I thought it was just me!!!!! MOsquitoes looove violin! they are music critics I guess...
My friend came in my room when I was practicing violin/vibrato once because she thought I was being attacked by a monster misquote XD
XD
Exactly!
@@jeninahuang2929 😂😂😂😂
I have seen this bad vibrato myself. Vibrato is hard to learn, but well worth it when you learn to do it right. Great video!
Love your videos and your makeup is stunning.

You have to practise vibrato ALL the time, not just some of the time.

Practice on everything. People may think your insane. But it will teach you how.
There's a reason on why it's the hardest music instrument to learn.
I tried it and was succesful in a week.Nothing is impossible.
you are amazing! This helps SO MUCH. You are great.

Is there a name for that technique though? I've always wondered...
Its called 'wrong' lol. :))
I was sat here thinking who on earth does it the wrong way, never seen that before, but i guess some people do
Chris White i was doing it the wrong way lol...2 yrs ago i started playing again after not playing since i was in high school (im 53).
bit i got myself a teacher...and she broke it to me lol
the teachers i had as a child never taught me vibratto...dont know why...i asked them...oh well at least i am learning it as an adult...the correct way😊
Easy to do I guess Marlene. Glad your having lessons now and enjoying playing again :)
Jesse Jojo Johnson Same for me😂😂..
I find the first finger hardest to do vibrato
lol me too
same
For me the 1st and the 4th are very difficult for me
4th here
Thanks you so much this helped me a lot
I decided to not have that headache until I cut all the other Gordian knots on the violin. In the moment I start integrating that into my technique, it will be a set back and a struggle for a long time. I will have to tell my MixTape buddies: "Sorry guys, I can't join for months to come-I'm dying." I started with trills in August and can do that now, but am still working on it. That's just a matter of getting strength into my fingers, vibrato seems to be a matter of not going completely crazy. I can 't play the violin if it's shaking-even if it's only a little bit. Good one. Lots my doubts cleared. Thanks
when I played with a professional viola teacher she told me the sound was right but the way I did it was wrong, still trying to do it right:')
I mean I didn't do it wrong as in the video but it still did it wrong:')
I don't understand. How can it be wrong if it emits the same sound?
Ron Ronn it’s not the same. A correct vibrato sounds a lot smoother.
Thank you for sharing ! I'm a tiny beginner yet, but I will get that vibrato. I will. Let's do this. There will be tears shed by neighbours and by my roommate but YOLO.
Love the stars in the back ground!
Yes!!!!after one week finally I have done it. I know how to do vibrato thank you for your video.
I learned vibrato in 10 attempts
Techno3420 that's nice 👌
Your lessons have been very helpful. I have started learning the violin a week ago.
OK,l love this video. But l've been playing the Violin for a year and half now and l have never really tried the real vibrato, kind of sacred l won't do it,but thanks to this video, l will put my best effort to make it work. Thanks!
I'm getting my violin today and I have watched your lessons because they are helpful and very thorough 🙃👌☺️
thank you teacher , i'm following your violin eduction videos , thank you so much 😊💖💖💖
i very much needed this! thank you so much!
im used to playing guitar, where you have to bend up for vabrato but violin is very different and i still haven't gotten it quite right yet.
classical guitar vibrato is similar to violin
Thanks, Oh, I like the background light. Looks Christmassy!
Your violin is down right beautiful in this video.
Vibrato takes a very long time to get down. Keep at it and it will become looser in time.
I love your energy
Thanks, Alison, by the way, I like the white curtains with white lights. It look so Christmassy.
Good to know I havent been making a mistake ;3 Thanks a bunch
I played violin for 10 years and took private lessons. I always knew I was doing vibrato wrong but teachers were like sounds fine to me. Like, bruh it's so wrong. Still can't properly do it :(

Well demonstrated.
Not going to lie but that slow vibrato was so cool!
right, wrong vibrato, clear video explanation very nice, super, super, super.
I LUV YOUR BACKGROUND. IT IS VERYNICE
maravilloso, me atrase unos dias😅
me pareció muy interesante lo del vibrato de dedo, ya que mi hermana por inexperiencia siempre hacia ese tipo, siempre sentí que sonaba extraño, al fin pude quitarme esa duda, muchísimas gracias ❤
Amazing video, very helpful. Have some engagement in gratitude!
I think i have a mixture of the wrong and the right one? Or have perfected the wrong one. The only reason i thought i was doing something wrong was because it wasnt as rich as the one of others, but otherwise it is very pleasent
I just love your violin🎻/what kind of violin do you use?
Ethan Johnson It's a n antique German violin, about 200 years old. She has said so in some comments.
Ambar Rivera *Wow* 😱
Thank you! I had this problem but I finally know how to do it correctly now haha :)
I love your make up! Great vid thanks really helped me!
OUR CHIN REST ARE THE SAME. I love it so much because of that design.
i have been playing the violin for 10 years but nobody taught me vibrato so i decided to learn myself. I couldnt do the right one because it was really hard so i started to do the wrong one. you are so friggin awesome!
finger vibrato is the one that gets most people I think it's stiffness more so for adults learning and particularly men. ..their hands are more stiff.
I have been playing for something like five year with little to no practice. But my question is, how do i get my hand wrist to rotate around far enough. while i rotate my hand in and around, my palm is perpendicular to my view.
how do I hold the violin tight while doing vibrato?!😅 because placing my thumb underneath the fingerboard i am unable to do it..please help
Perhaps you need a shoulder rest to help you, or you are holding the violin incorrectly, or gripping too hard. Without being able to see you, I cant say for sure.
This is great!
I do vibrato with a LOT narrower wiggle. or no wiggle at all. it sounds squeaky. is it wrong?
Helpful! Thank you!
This is the first time I have heard of people just pulsing the string for vibrato o.o
me too.
i did this before watching how to vibrato videos lol
But the question is how to speed up the wrist vibrato?? I think I have a decent vibrato but for the life of me I can’t get it to speed up to get a really focused sound.
It's too hard😥 I practice but i can't and without this any music isn't beautiful
I'm a begginer at the violin and I can't get the finger movements right what do I do?
and also how do you get your double chin not to show when im playing
You should only attempt vibrato after at least a year of playing, never as a beginner.
The only way to get rid of a double chin is to not play the violin! Cant be helped!
thanx for the tips
Please make a tutorial video on THE MYTH- endless love
OMG thank you this helped a lot !
Thank you so much madam
I do the old person self-taught "string wiggle" vibrato. It doesn't sound as bad as shown on your video but I realize it isn't correct. But when I attempt to do it correctly (with my wrist) it always feels as though I'm going to drop the violin. So apparently I have problems. :-D
I always doing the wrong vibrato, at least until my teacher laughed and teach me the right one.
Ur vibrato is so natural,,I like it
I've seen people actually bend the strings slightly.... like they are playing the guitar or something. Yes, the pitch does change, but it has the same effects as the "pulsing"....
Nice video, I understand it better
Much thanks from Tanzania
Wow, what I did was I just technically just moved the string with my finger. I didn't do the finger wiggle or the finger rolling.
TRIGGERE D oh you bent it quickly and repeatedly like some guitarists? Interesting. I might try that.
helps great thank you!!
when i try to do vibrato my ginger is like stuck it cannot move i dont k ow what to do
You need to relax and make sure your fingers are suitable bent and the hand position is correct.
