This video is a continuation of my video Soloing with Rolls. Here we take the basic five stroke roll and make practical use of it. Here is a gear list:

First time I've seen these 2 videos. Great stuff! I'd love to see soloing not only with what you've already done, but also change the time signatures along the way using paradiddles and double paradiddles as well as 5 stroke, etc.

Thank you, but they aren't that old. They're from 2008. I do have a couple kits from the 50's and 60's though. Also great drums!

Great lesson. The rolls aren't a problem for me but I think I'll have to go with a jazz tuning to pull this off. I can't really get the rebound the way they're tuned now.
Killer lesson! I've been messing around with 5 stroke rolls a bunch lately, but have been sticking it RRLLK with the "shorter" phrase. I *think* I stole it from Eric Harland. Glad to see you're back, keep it up!

Your drums are perfectly tuned every single drum sounds exactly like it should in context with the other ones. They usually sound like that from the store but the second I change heads I can never get that sound back did you tune them if so will you do a video on how to do that?

I’m scouring the interwebs to eradicate every misspelling of the word “DEFINITELY”. The crowd favorite is DEFINITELY DEFIANTLY.
I don’t have any concrete data, but I’d guess that more than half the time people are using the word DEFIANTLY as if it were definitely. I worry about our collective literacy level, as DEFIANTLY is not phonetically close, as one look at the word should reveal. There’s no FIN sound, and there’s no NIT sound! How can you be able to read, look at this word, and say “looks right to me!” lol. It DOESNT look right at all, and of course it’s not. Between this, and VIOLA instead of VOILA, it’s enough to drive you batty. Don’t forget - “Tis better to be thought a fool, than to post on the web and remove all doubt”

I noticed you wear Converse shoes when you play I use the same ones they're light and they slide good on the pedal
I wear them mainly for these videos. Most of my gigs require dress shoes which also work very well.
The Gretsch sounds real good, did you have to do edge works to get it to sound so good?

Good shit. I was wondering your ride hand playing on the slower tempos. U seemed to play the last triplet before the 1st and 3rd quarters a bit late. Do u prefer this over playing the triplet "on point" at slower tempos and if so then why? Would like to hear your opinion and hopefully u understand my rally english.
Thanks! You are correct. I am coming out of the Art Blakey and Jimmy Cobb school of ride cymbal playing. I think it all depends on context. If I'm playing in an Elvin sort of way, it will feel entirely different.

I've been wondering about playing swing on the high-hat. How do you go about setting up your high-hat, and what is the technique you are using? :)

I was thinking about when you keep the ride swing pattern on the high-hat with your stick, either only using hands and choking or controlling the height with the foot!

So the accent is on the "a" of the triplet with double strokes on the down-beat and "&"?

The Jazz Capitol of the world, Sacramento, CA. There's a surprisingly good scene here. It's no NYC, but great players and a few gigs to go around.

Are you playing the bass drum at all? I can't tell
It's there, if you're using phone speakers, you'll never hear it, but if you are on headphones, it is there quietly, just as I intended it. Hope this helps!
How old are your Green Gretsch? 3 ply or 6?
They are from 2008, so 6 ply.
