Your instructional videos are a perfect combination of marvelous chops, tasteful playing, real swinging feel, great educational skills and, as a bonus, the best sounding drums and cymbals I have ever heard. Thank you so much for giving me some very useful material to work on! Concerning the "swinging mambo": There is a wonderful version of "the Girl from Ipanema" by the Count Basie Big Band with Sammy Davis (although its mambo rhythm is slightly different from the one you played in the video).

Have you ever heard-Sidewinder w/Billy Higgins on the drums, Because when I swing a mombo & just try not to think too much and let things develop organically-I go full Higgins

also your drums sounds so good, could you explain how you tune them and what kind of process you follow to record them (mics, etc) ? that could be cool :)
Thanks so much! Honestly, I don't have a system for tuning, I just use my ear. To start, I try to tune the top and bottom heads to the same pitch, then I adjust the top head for resonance and pitch. The mics I use are listed in the description. Everything is pretty low budget. The only process I have is throw the two overheads up and plug in the BD mic. Experiment with your drums, mics, and room and you'll land on something you like. Hope this helps!

I'll experiment ! What I like in the recorded sound of your video is that it is really close to the real sound in the room.
No problem. Natural sound is what I'm going for, glad it's translating. If you have a Zoom or another hand held recorder, they work well as overheads too. Best of luck!
I have some shure overheads and bass drum mic, it should do the job :)

Im trying to aply the mechanic in my rigth hand. But the comping in my left hand just stay frozen.
So, coordination is what you're going for. I'd recommend getting the Art of Bop Drumming by John Riley and working through the Comp examples SLOWLY at first. Coordination takes time to develop. Going slow will help you get there. I'm going to do a video on comping soon, so stay tuned.
Hi Tim, I was wondering if you had any advice for me on where to start with comping. I am able to play the most basic swing beat but am lost on where to go from there any help is absolutely fantastic. Keep being awesome - Jonathan

Wasn't the mambo groove you showed a mozambique?
Martin Lukas Huser It was indeed a jazz mambo, the differences are subtle, with the toms only being on the "3" side of the clave in the Mozambique.
