    No hyperbole, no clickbait, no BS, just straight to the point and good content, delivered as a sane person with some humour sprinkled on top. This is youtubing at its best. "Thank you for the community service, Tim!"

    This is great, thank you.
    Would be great a second part lesson of HH comping but also adding bass drum on it.

      Thank you! There is a ton of that in Beyond Bop which is why I didn't really go into it. Great book if you haven't checked it out already. Thanks again!

    Love your lessons!!!! You are awesome!!!! Thanks. My idea for a future lesson would focus on playing doubles with brushes, something I've always struggled with. Keep up the good work!

    • @TimMetz
      @TimMetz  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I would start playing doubles slow and work on gradually speeding them up. Also, work on drags. I'll see if I can do a video on this topic, but I'm afraid there is no real secret sauce to it other than making sure you're controlling every stroke with your fingers and wrists. I hope this helps!

      Thanks, Tim. I've been taking your advice regarding brush doubles/drags. One question -- while playing, should the left hand be positioned to the left of the snare or ABOVE it (closer to the body, with wrist pointed slightly up). I believe I have read that, when playing rudiments with brushes, it should be the latter. However, the former feels more natural to me. Obviously, I want to do it correctly and not waste my practice time or reinforce bad habits. Thanks again! Susan

      Hi Susan! Well, I'm not sure if you are playing tradition or matched grip. Tomorrow's video is going to be on the brushes, but I'm afraid I didn't go into playing doubles much. You will be able to see my wrists when I'm playing though so you can hopefully get an idea from that. In the meantime, check out this video Jeff Hamilton does on brushes, he is a master. th-cam.com/video/SuNcm6_5rX0/w-d-xo.html

    Tim, as always, an excellent video. Thank you. I'll have to work through Beyond Bop Drumming. So far, I have worked through the Jim Chapin book and The Art of Bop Drumming. Loved both of those books and spent a great deal of time with each of them!

    John Riley does cover this if I remember correctly. He calls it "Broken time".

    • @TimMetz
      @TimMetz  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are correct, however there aren't any exercises in the book (aside from a couple transcribed examples from Mel Lewis and Roy Haynes) that alter the ride cymbal pattern. That's what I was referring to and what is on the PDF.

    • @bobbyboygaming2157
      @bobbyboygaming2157 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool, thanks for the response! I have a question about brush playing. I have seen all the "Basic patterns" videos out there, but I was wondering what coordination exercises are good for developing advanced brush playing? Should I practice the same basic patterns but with circles moving in the opposite directions? (so, for example, practice clockwise and counter clockwise motions for each hand?) Or should I stick to one direction of motion, but practice swishing on both the "on beats" and "off beats"? Or do all 4 variations for each hand? (counter clockwise + clockwise, with swish [accent] on "on beats" and "off beats"?). Another thing I could do is, practice the basic patterns, but switch hand roles (mirror image of the brush pattern). Lastly, I noticed that my stick Moeller technique [sort of] already dictates a circular direction of motion for each hand. So I was thinking of just letting my Moeller technique w/sticks kind of leak over into my brush playing (i.e. counterclockwise right hand, and clockwise left hand).
      So the big question is, which of these exercises are worth exploring, and which are a waste of time. Or are they all somewhat useful in any case? Sorry for the long question. It seems that brush playing depends on individuality a lot, so I'd like to see more videos on "how to discover [that] individuality" rather than like "how to memorize a basic pattern" type of stuff. Thanks for your time!

    I can't keep that swing rhythm steady on the ride. I thought that it's not really hard, and then I recorded myself playing to a backing, and listened back and it was crap.

    • @TimMetz
      @TimMetz  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It takes practice. Playing swing is different from playing any other style because the time comes from the ride cymbal and not your bass drum. You're probably used to feeling the beat more with your BD foot. Keep trying, it can only get better!
