    Great lesson. Also, glad to see you feather the bass drum while you play time. This concept is lost on many jazz drummers.

    Haven't really gotten a concrete answer from the internet, so I thought I'd ask you. Does the position you use (match, traditional) really matter when playing jazz? The most 'appropriate' answer I get online is that it's all about the traditional of previous jazz greats using the traditional hold, so you might as well follow.
    But in a technical-standpoint, does it really matter? Does the match-style hold limit speed or something, or make certain things uncomfortable to do?

    • @TimMetz
      @TimMetz  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Grip doesn't matter. The way you play music does.

    • @igunashiodesu
      @igunashiodesu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Matched sticks grip drummer here. I've talked to a lot of drummers about this topic. The consensus I've heard so far is that the benefits are barely noticeable regarding one style over the other. Some jazz drummers have told me that the traditional or jazz grip allows them to roll over the entire drum kit with much more ease and flow. Others have told me that matched stick grip allows them to have a better control of the stick since it's easier, more natural, to them. One drummer told me that the traditional or jazz grip helped him train his weak hand because of the bouncing effect of the stick, which is a bit more difficult to control, therefore having him put an extra effort to control his weak hand and match with the strength and control of his dominant hand. Regardless, it is more of a matter of comfort, feeling, and personal style.

      I study at the Conservatorium and have always played matched grip. in today's studies nobody expects you to play traditional anymore. use the one thats more comfortable you can play jazz just as well with matched grip, no worries there

    • @TimMetz
      @TimMetz  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree.

    • @fuegohernandez94
      @fuegohernandez94 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use both, grew up playing in the street bands in NOLA and the snare hangs down low on an angle so traditional works well. Behind the set my snare is straight so I mostly use match. But the grips have a different sound so I may switch back-and-forth. Just another sound on my palette.

    you are a strange man lol. Nice lesson! I noticed you have an extreme crash to left. Do you find it is ride-able? I am looking for HHX crash that I can ride on but is versatile enough for other types of music. Thx in advance!

    • @TimMetz
      @TimMetz  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks... I think?! Haha! It is, I don't use it for most of my gigs, but I have it up in my studio for teaching and versatility. It is rideable, but not my favorite. I use it mainly as a crash. Have used it on recordings from jazz to rock to country. It's a really great cymbal.

    • @GorcStew
      @GorcStew 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have been listening to sound bites of it and find it is a bit too dark/trashy for me. Looking for ride-able crash that is bright but not too bright for jazz. I don't have the budget to buy enough cymbals to fan out on the floor next to me like you lol so I need a very versatile crash. I like your lessons a lot by the way. The way you orchestrate doubles in a crossover fashion in this one is very stylish.

    • @TimMetz
      @TimMetz  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha! Those cymbals on the floor come from many years of trying to find the sound. I think the Extreme is a very versatile cymbal, but that is just my opinion. It is definitely not a bright cymbal. Good luck finding the one! Thanks so much!

    Is it my imagination or are the two tom tom sounds reversed at 3:19?

    • @TimMetz
      @TimMetz  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are not, but depending on the speakers you're listening on, it might sound a little weird. Also if you're not used to hearing higher pitched drums, the sound can throw you off.
