    My wife and I saw Superman II in 1981 in a large sold-out theater on its second night at a time when you had to travel some distance to see the latest releases in a few select theaters. The audience of all ages totally loved the movie and when Superman burst through on the left side of the screen near the end carrying the flag to place it back on the white house, the theater erupted in yet another loud roar of cheering, happy that a single individual had made a difference and righted wrongs. Then the audience became silent when it realized he was going to speak. When he said to the president, "I won't let you down again." an innocent young boy in the front row, so caught up in the moment, blurted out, "We know you won't, Superman!". The audience laughed and cheered in agreement with his assessment of this symbol of heroism.

    2:21 One of the best “breaking the fourth wall” moments in movie history. It’s as if Superman is looking at you, the viewer, to say “I’m always here.” I miss Christoper Reeve so much. In a way, Superman looking at the flag of the US reminds him of the ideal that he should strive for, but didn't. He did fail, but he rose to the occasion when he needed to do so.
      I wonder if we as a nation will remember the ideals we have established and strive for them, no matter how much we have failed in the past.

      @49ers2000 yeah right. Reeves was a Democrat and advocated for a lot of the stuff we see today. Reagan is by far the worst president we've had next to Donald Trump. The 80s was a decade full of violence and drugs and a rise in poverty. I really don't see how so many ppl love Ronald Reagan when his presidency was marked with nothing but poverty and reluctancy to handle aids, drugs, or anything. Plus he sold American ppl out to capitalist which is why mortgage prices skyrocketed which is why you'll probably be working until your 60s......whoopy Doo?

    The way he says 'I've been working out' and does that motion with the arms to indicate using gym equipment is so cool.
    I think he obviously brought enough money to cover the first lot of damage, which he caused - due to not being prepared
    for how vulnerable he was. He has said in the comics about being known as a boy scout and not minding that. The point
    is as we know, he prides himself on doing the right thing, hence he would want to cover all the damage simply because
    he felt responsible. As we know, part of the ethics of being a scout is a moral sense. I believe Lord Baden - Powel did
    make that clear.

    Three things:
    1) I saw this in a packed theater as a nine year old kid, and the whole place ERUPTED when Clark Kent walked in the diner again. Everyone knew what was about to happen, and it was so satisfying to watch. It was one of the best kept secrets too.
    2) A scene like this today would almost certainly be a post-credits scene, which doesn’t at all take away from how great it was. It handled, from a plot perspective, a minor detail, but, to us in the audience, it righted a wrong in the most Superman way ever.
    3) I only noticed today that after Clark explains to the diner owner “oh, I’ve been working out” he turns to walk out but not before pausing for a brief second to stare straight into the camera, breaking the fourth wall, acknowledging to the audience that we’re in on his secret. Very subtle, but another way Donner was ahead of his time.

      different director, different direction. have you seen the Donner cut of Superman II? I would of preferred his cut over Lesters. Donner filmed 80% of Superman II, but they had to quit filming too finish Superman I, and make it to the release date.

    • @morganmosley5136
      @morganmosley5136 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yes, I've seen the Donner cut of Superman II. And, like you, I prefer it to the Lester version. But I think the ending to the Lester version makes more sense, at least to me. The whole turning back time thing shouldn't have been used again. The first time to save Lois? Sure, that's fine. But for Superman to do it again? That's excessively playing God, even for Superman.

    • @hulkster46a
      @hulkster46a 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +doc I think Bryan Singer's Superman Returns is more of a nod to Donner's Superman I I cut. Superman had sex with Lois before renouncing his powers. Causing her too be pregnant. I am not a big fan of SR. The suit was all wrong and the story was downright boring in about 70% of the movie.

    • @hulkster46a
      @hulkster46a 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +doc it is possible that Singer had conversations with Donner and what he filmed for Superman II, back in the 80s. Donner had 80% of II filmed. But they had to quit filming too make the Christmas release date of Superman I. Donner was then fired and all the scenes with Brando cut, and refilmed.

    • @hulkster46a
      @hulkster46a 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +doc Plus Donner's Wife is in charge of The Donner Party production company. They've produced all the X-men movies that Singer has directed, so far.

    Like Rusty Kuntz says further down in the section about the moment when Superman smiles at us, making sure everything will turn out all right. I agree of all my heart :) I turn to back to that moment again and again because it is such a warm, goodhearted, genuine smile. It is a smile you can trust, follow and take to your heart. That superman - he was just so damn nice :) I want him back! - now! hehe ;)

    I saw this in a crowded theater in 81. When they cut from the fortress of solitude to "Rocky" in the diner, the entire theater erupted in a "yeah!" moment bc they knew Superman was going to right yet another wrong. So satisfying. Reeve was the best (and only) Superman IMHO. Then again the writers of the first 2 Superman films included Mario Puzo of The Godfather, Robert Benton and David Newman of Bonnie & Clyde and Tom Mankiewicz who wrote what is still the best Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me. Dick Donner and Richard Lester did a great job too.

    This scene can be seen also in the Donner's cut and there it's totally without sense.
    The guy of the cafeteria shouldn't remember Clark or what happened with the truck driver because Superman changed the past in the Donner's cut as in the first movie.

    • @SB992REBORN
      @SB992REBORN ปีที่แล้ว

      Donner filmed it so yeah it is in his cut but imo THE WORLD TURNING BACK IS SELECTIVE AND ONLY AFFECTS CERTAIN EVENTS AND PEOPLE AND IS NOT A TRADITIONAL TIMETRAVEL DEVICE BUT RATHER A EMOTIONAL DRIVEN SELECTIVE ANOMOLY EVENT DEVICE! Thus why lex remembers vaguely being in the fortress in Returns, lois remembers events of II and knows Clark is superman and that they were together, the people in the dinner recognize him except the bully for obvs reason that Clark wanted justice and to payback the bully, and Jimmy and Perry are semi remembering where they've been since events of II, and in 1 Lois is saved and Jimmy is saved but missle never hit and everyone is alright thus showing that he CHOOSES when and what events are changed! He is more human than you think!!! 😉
