I love how you can see Hangman's attitude change as Mav makes his way through this. First he scoffs, then he smiles as if he thinks Mav will fail and wants some entertainment, then as Maverick drops his bombs he's intensely focused on whats happening, before finally saying 'Damn' in respect of what he's just seen. Glen Powell did such a great job, Hangman could so easily have come across as any other arrogant jock.

Warlock's wry smile was the perfect way to start that scene. Out of everyone in the room, he was the only one who knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that Maverick was perfectly capable of doing exactly what he said he would. His expression was an amusing way to say, "These kids are about to get schooled" without having to say a single word. Throughout the whole movie Warlock was the strongest link between Maverick's world and the big Navy, the one man who could see both sides. His character was perfectly cast and perfectly acted, a delight to watch in every scene.

Also a great job by Jon Hamm here. In Cyclone's expression at 1:00 and 1:21, he might be feeling angry, frustrated, confused, and you can see all those things, but he also looks hopeful. Up to now the mission has seemed impossible, and Maverick may be defying his orders but he's also about to show whether the mission is even possible, and he has no choice but to root for him. Then at 3:30, his 'damn...' expression. Again he's frustrated, also impressed, annoyed at Maverick's cockiness, deflated and resound to the idea that the mission can only go forward with Maverick as the leader pre-empting the following scene. He does a great job at making the most from the little that he's given here, and generally bringing nuance and a human side to a character that on paper could have been a bit one-dimensional.

It should absolutely clean house on the technical awards (sound design, visual effects, editing), but that's about it. Don't get me wrong: I was thrilled that this movie was FAR beyond better than I expected. That said, it's an action movie, it's unapologetically pro-American, and it's unapologetically pro-US military. That's three strikes against the Academy ever allowing it into any other category, and they'd hate it just for being any one of those things.

    • @Mav86asian

The Oscars is now a left wing nutjob. Not even resembling what it was before in the times of Jurassic Park, Titanic, or LOTR. This film is pro US, and considered right-wing by many (even though it’s apolitical in nature, many leftists consider neutrality as being right-wing), so i doubt it would be winning anything from best picture, director, or actor. If i am to be proven wrong, i’d be happy to.
From an artistic point of view, both acting and musically, everything was rather perfect with The Greatest Showman wasn’t it, but the oscars sidelined that one too. Oscars are becoming the Grammy’s now, trash and worthless.

Inverting changes the negative G to a positive G which the pilot can handle. Here's a cool interview with a Top Gun instructor. He discusses this maneuver starting at the 19-minute mark.

There is a cockiness to it that fits his character so well. After all, he's the best pilot, even if the rest are willing to admit it.
By 3:06 his whole posture has changed; he's on the edge of his seat watching someone do what they all thought was impossible, and in less time.
And by the end, there's just that quiet "damn" as he comes to grip with the realization that he ISN'T the best pilot. This dude's whole world changed in 2m and 15 sec.

@@PV1230 Chances are all of the pilots are breathing heavily as well. They have all tried the course, and they all likely know the breathing pattern needed so they can get oxygen without passing out from the G-Forces. During this run they are seeing the moves and started their breathing patterns, but soon realized that Maverick is going faster and pulling more Gs than they ever did. Maverick did not memorize the course that they did, Maverick is going faster, harder, and better than any of them did.
As a comparison, go to a rollercoaster park and make a video from the front of one of their rides. Ride it a few times so your know the moves. The next day, go to a big screen TV and watch your movie at x1.1 speed. You will feel the sensations of every twist and turn, even though you are sitting in a chair. You will even recognize that what you are watching is faster than what you went through the previous day.

This is leadership by example and can be applied in not just in the military but in the civilian world as well. One special note to add: Kudos to the aircraft maintenance folks. Yep - that's real G-Forces. Something the original Top Gun wasn't capable of portraying. The technical details on how they filmed inside the cockpits are fascinating viewing if you can find them on TH-cam. In summary - the cameras - specifically the LENSES of the cameras (because the actual BODY of the camera with the FILM is actually somewhere else in the plane's modified structure) got small enough and durable enough to be placed inside the cockpit in the correct fashion to capture the actor.
      And - SIMULTANEOUSLY -
Capture an "over the shoulder" view of the ACTUAL pilot flying the plane in the FRONT seat!
Any time the camera switches from showing Tom Cruises helmeted face and the scenery receding behind him - to showing that over-the-shoulder shot of "his" helmet from the rear and the oncoming view - what you are seeing is the actual Navy Pilot with a duplicate "Maverick" helmet.
Both cameras were recording at the same time. The choice of edit timing was done later in post production.
But it's all 100% real footage!
Absolute MAD RESPECT for Cruise to do it this way!

There was a subtle, yet important, change to Maverick in TG2: his focus on others. Yes, he still does things his way; yes, he still disrespects authority; but he's not just in it for himself as he was in much of TG1. He was worried about others. We saw this in the DarkStar scene, where Hondo reminds him of what'll happen if he goes through with the test flight; Maverick replies that he knows what'll happen to everyone else (i.e. the support personnel in the program) if he doesn't. This scene is just a continuation of that; he's showing that the daring mission can be flown, and that the students' lives will be in much less danger.
