Toyota E-locker Rebuild Part 1

  • I rebuild and regear an 8" Toyota E-locker.

    My automotive projects with my 3 toyotas (01 taco 4x4, 97 4runner 4x4, 87 pickup) have gotten more and more complex. From lifts to timing chains, transmission, hydraulics, brakes, sensors, diagnosing and repairing or improving about every freaking bolt...this is next. It's like I read something on a forum or watch a video, next thing I know I'm on cardboard and gravel with more and more parts and tools....I don't know if this will ever end. I'm in too deep.

    Has anyone replaced spider gears in these Toyota e-lockers? Mine are all chewed up and I can't seem to get the exact/correct spiders for it from The local Toyota parts dealer. Lookin for part numbers for the 4 small spiders and the one side gear opposite of the ring gear . Any help much appreciated!

    Really enjoyed your vids on the locker rebuild and sub’d. Trying to rebuild mine and can’t get the pinion to press out of the housing even with a 20 ton press. Any tips?

      The original pinion that came out of mine was very tight. It took a fair bit of force in my press to get the pinion out of the outer pinion bearing to remove it from the housing.
      It's possible you have a bit of rust in-between the pinion and bearing, I know mine had a little. I would try soaking the top of the bearing with some good penetrating oil for a few days, hopefully you can get some to seep between the bearing and pinion shaft.
      I would try heating the inner-race of the bearing with a torch, you might be able to get the bearing race to expand juuust enough to let go of the pinion when you have it in the press. In other words, heat the bearing while you have it under pressure in the press.
      Don't forget the safety glasses and safety squints, should be exciting when it finally lets go, haha.
      You should also considering carefully sanding down the diameter of the pinion shaft (or the inside diameter of the bearing) a little if you are throwing new bearings on the old gearset, you don't want to have to deal with pressing it apart like this to set up your new bearings/gears. Lucky for me, my "new" gearset was a lot looser than the original.

      @@amielsstuff3262 Thanks for the tips! Turns out the outer pinion bearing was so bad that it completely heat welded itself to the pinion shaft!
      To give you an idea of the level of heat, even the outer slinger was completely fused to the pinion shaft. What I did, was cut off the slinger, pried the melted bearing roller cage and broke it apart bit by bit from the back side, then cut a small notch in the center of the bearing and extracted the rollers from the back one by one with a magnet.
      This was incredibly time consuming but eventually allowed the entire pinion to come out with the inner race of the outer bearing still attached to the pinion shaft rather than pressed off. Upon inspection the inner race of the outer pinion bearing had actual dents in it from the rollers which had apparently long seized. New ring and pinion going back in so it went into the bin anyway. Hopefully no one ever has to deal with one that bad in the future.
