    The grease is a dielectric Grease it’s expensive, it allows electrical current to low through it, bend the contacts out a small amount to make contact to the disk which is built partially conductive.

    Now that you got it working. Definitely engage it atleast once a year. I feel lack of use is why most don't work when you try it.

    I have a 2002 tacoma ext cab 4x4 v6 and today is the 2nd day the rear diff lock light on the dashboard has been turned on but not all the way on it is dimmed. It turns on then turns off. The actual rear diff lock button by steering wheel is not engaged though.. i checked the plugs on the actuator and the problem still is there. Thanks for your video very informative.

    You may benefit from the "grey wire mod". I had a 4Runner of the same vintage. it allowed diff-lock at will. I found it useful at times to be on 2wd locked at times.
    I am unsure if the Taco wiring is the same, but may be worth exploring.

    I've got a 2wd non-TRD Taco that got the E-Locker as a dealer option. Because there is no 4-Low on my truck, I can switch the locking diff on whenever. I imagine it being a 2wd, the E-locker probably hardly if ever been used. The light come one when I hit the button so I assume it works. But seeing this, now I think I'll need to find a sandlot to do a little hooning, errr, testing to see if it works.

    ... in this repair, is it necessary to not allow the car (or diff) to move while the locker mechanism is out being rebuilt? I am wondering if I can take my lockers off the car, put cover plates on the openings and be able to drive and then resume the repair putting the rebuilt lockers on later?

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would recommend not driving with the lockers removed. This is because nothing will be preventing the diff from locking randomly while driving.

    So happy to have found this video. Total newbie. I detached the actuator and decided to bench test it outside the diff. It turned one direction (probably locked) but it won't turn the other way and i've now learned i need to get it back to the unlocked state so i can reinstall it. How do you recommend doing that? THANKS!

    • @cardp17
      @cardp17 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      found the answer if anyone else encounters this problem. there are 5 pins on the actuator plug. well, actually 6 but one is blank. the two pins in the same row as the blank are for power. attach a 12v supply to those two pins. if it doesn't immediately turn, remove the leads and switch them. try again. that should return it to it's original state when you removed it from the differential.

    Good job & vid , nice rebuild. I would have tried checking the actuator when u first removed it & tried unplugging connector, spraying WD40 & then reconnecting it for another try, just to test it wasn’t something simple as a connector issue, before proceeding further. Having said that did you ever find out what was the original cause for failure? I suspect it was the grease causing a bad connection with the pins. TFS. Cheers

    Great video, great timing. I just installed a new (to me) 3rd member into my ‘03 Tacoma TRD and used my original actuator from my truck since the 3rd I got online didn’t have one and I wasn’t having issues with mine before the swap. In your video it looks like it was a simple fix, but if it was in fact the motor that was bad what where you going to do? I haven’t tested the electrical to the harness yet but I have a feeling the motor’s burned up and was hoping that this video was going to show how to replace it. Do you know if there’s a way to order an electric motor to replace a bad old one? Still loved the video and the custom paint job is fire haha!

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Kevin, if the motor was bad it would most likely be due to the commutator (the copper portion the the brushes ride on) being blackened from carbon build up. You can easily polish this back to like-new with some fine grain sand paper and polishing compound. Seeing as how the motors don't really spin that much every time you use them, I'd be surprised if the motor was "bad".

    • @Z-Ack
      @Z-Ack 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea unless youre able to fix the one you got or find a 12v motor the same size then your gonna have to buy the whole part which is like 400$.. but you might be able to find a 12vdc brushed motor if its got brushes on it otherwise itd be a permanent magnet motor.. just mic the size and double check..

By the way, I noticed from one of your other videos the KS plates on the Z. I'm in Kansas City. What have you done to keep the Taco's underbody clean? Every Toyota truck I have seen here has rust on the frame.

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heck yeah man! Good to see someone local. My Tacoma's frame is in relatively good shape because it's been replaced. The rear axle was pretty rusty when I got the truck but I've done my best at preserving it by scraping the rust off and treating it with POR-15.

    • @architecteye6089
      @architecteye6089 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Toyota didnt coat there frames in the 90's and early 2000. As result, even mild climates that wouldn't usually promote rust still takes it toll on a taco frame.

    Practical: thanks for your meticulous video. I'll be doing this in the near future. You mention @10:40 about proper orientation. Do you have any tips about alignment? Did you make match marks w/ a Sharpie or anything like that? Or does the alignment happen when you cycle the actuator like you did when you put it on the red stool?

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I didn't know it at the time, but the "calibration" really just happens when you cycle the actuator once it's all reassembled. Just be sure to insert the metal "knob" on the back side of the gear into the hook of the clock spring. Take pictures while disassembling to give yourself a better idea of how it should go back together.

      I do believe ABS becomes disabled when the locker is engaged. But, mine doesn't have an ABS problem if the locker is disengaged, so I can't really do a diagnosis video. Sorry. I would start by making sure your locker is disengaging and that the switch for the locker in the differential is working.

      I can't vouch for it, and honestly, it isn't exactly cheap nor is it probably available locally. Which is why I ended up just buying the Toyota grease.

      @@PracticalEnthusiast Mud is probably the best place to find an alternative. Surprisingly considering guys on there, especially LC owners, who are intent on OEM Mr. T parts.

    I know its a old video but...
    I just bought a pickup with an e locker with on actuator (just a metal plate to cover the hole) and I can not with all of my might get that gear rack to move manually. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to lift the wheels up and spin them to get it to unlock?
    Thanks!

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will likely need to get the wheels off the ground so they can spin. The rack is likely just binding. Unless someone has gone through the effort of forcing it into a permanent locked/unlocked position.

      @@PracticalEnthusiast Discovered that there was a ball bearing/metal marble placed inn the cap that sits on the side, blocking the rod from sliding in. Removed it and got my diff unlocked. Now to find a way to Keep it unlocked until I can find an actuator.

    What did you use to paint on the back, that black paint, is that rustoleum paint?

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's POR-15. Seems to last a big longer than Rustoleum or similar.

    Do the replacement frames rust like the old ones did or did they make changes so that they dont? And do they still replace them if you have a rusty one?

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, I don't know if the replacement frames are better built. Surface rust still pops up out of nowhere around the welds on mine and I'm constantly trying to keep them sealed off with paint. I still see replacement Tacoma frames stacked up at the Toyota dealerships around here, so I think they are still honoring the frame recall on these trucks. I believe you just have to find a dealer that regularly replaces them and you might be covered.

    My rear locker wasn’t working, I believe I was following the proper engagement procedure. But anyways I did a hard reset on the ECU, and then threw it in 4lo and pressed the button and the rear locker engaged immediately, I believe it was the first time it has ever been used in 17 years. Heck try that first before you go tearing into all that
