This is in my top 5 favourite modern classics. BMW have always been my favourite as when I 1st got my glasses as a kid I could see them coming from the kidney grill at the front
Congratulations on the new series about classic/yougtimers. In my opinion it gave another life to your content. And it still amazes me that how come you actually make my knowledge about cars better whenever I watch you and your channel has not exploded yet compared to other TH-camRS which do not seem to add up really much. You seem like a refined/better produced Doug. Amazing work. All the best from Brazil!
James, as a young teenager there were 3 cars that boys my age had on posters on their bedroom walls: Ferrari GTO 288, Porsche 959 and the Ferrari F40 (which you covered in Ep.3) These cars were unique in that they were the very first Hypercars.. everything before them were only Supercars. I mean, the F40 was the 1st $1 Million dollar vehicle to drool over! So very special, that they set the benchmarks for all others that would follow. In sum, they are old enough to look back on, but modern enough to still be 'lust worthy'... Modern Classics indeed. So, my wish, is for you to drive the remaining 2 of the 3. Cheers, James.
One of very few BMWs i actually like. I have a neighbour with a E30 M3 and it is such a cool car. He has changed the exhaust, air intake and put on BBS Super RS wheels on it. Other than that its completely original. And he even uses it now in the Norwegian winter. Now you have to find a Mercedes 190E 2.3 or 2.5 16v to compare to it. And a Alfa Romeo GTV6 should be a cool car to drive for this series. The name though is Cecotto not Secotto. Just so you get that right. See that some others have mentioned that as well. But a good video. This is probably the best series you've ever done.
Roberto Ravanglia edition are also left hand drive...25/505( sold for UK) only misano red and nogaro silver. The rest of the 505 pieces which are 480 are the Johnny Cecotto edition, that had the same colour configuration as the EVO II : Nogaro silver, Misano Red and Macau blue which is the one that your actual driving. Macau blue colour was also used for the 500 limited edition pieces of the 30 years anniversary F80 M3 named: "30 Jahre M3 Edition".
This video is really nicely put together. Really good, snappy editing especially just before you go for a drive. Not to mention that You’ve become a little bit of a british Doug DeMuro in this one ;)
Everybody is going on about Cecotto Secotto but those glasses look spot on. This might sound bit weird but you dress accordingly for every occasion and your style goes with everything you drive. Most people will not even realise that but it makes a huge difference to a video and I think we should appreciate his effort of bumping up the quality in every single way possible. Cheers to you James, you are the best and keep up the good work !
E30 bmw owner here 😀 She's no m3 granted but I'm 2 thirds of the way though fitting a 4.0 v8 with 6 speed box and other trinkets . Such a balanced driver focused machine. I love the things. So raw and connected they're hard to beat from a driver point of view 🤘🔥
James, please continue this series! All the cars I grew up around loving - and still do! Brilliant series, fantastic quality and the MR JWW charm. This channel is king for us car culture lovers.
Enjoyed your video. Brought back some great memories for me having owned a Macao Cecotto between 98' - 02'. As mentioned, not the quickest of cars but the chassis and the go - kart characteristics of the car made up for any of it's shortfalls if any. Oh yes, one very good looking car that looks even better now in my opinion than back when I was lucky enough to have owned one.
James, I don’t often comment on TH-cam videos but PLEASE keep this series going. If you’re spanning over the 80s, 90s and 00s then the scope is huge to create some (more) amazing content. I look forward to seeing it soon!
What an absolute icon in BMW's M car history! Any true petrol head will have a spot for 1 of these in their dream garage, just a thought I would love to see a video on your take of the Vauxhall Cavalier 4x4 turbo just as they are getting a really rare car and my old man used to have one and his only regret in his 62 year existence is selling his. Great series and always look forward to watching your content. Keep these awesome videos coming!
Been driving e30s and e30 M3s since the early 90s, built bunch of them including e30 m3 touring with euro s50 e36 m3 engine and Warsteiner E30 M3 DTM replica with euro s50b32 c/f air box, alpha N etc...these are the best little cars, 30 plus years counting ! my 964RS mint green e30 m3 attracts more attention on the streets of NYC than any exotic! Good job on the series James!
Found this channel beacuse of this series...and it just keeps getting better and better...amazing. I found your "is back the way forward" (or something like that lol) idea very intreguing. Food for thought definitely. It would be great if you could test hot hatches (or any other "normal" and more generic cars) from the 80's-90's such as the Fiat Bravo HGT, Alfa 145 Cloverleaf, Peugeot 306 GTI, Clio Williams, Civic SiR. Saxo VTS. And compare it to a modern hot-hatch say...Golf GTI, Giulietta QV/Veloce, 308 GTI, Clio RS to see if despite having more power, better handling and tech, they still have soul. Great work Mr. JWW
Love, love, love this new series to your channel. I really like how your channel focuses on the "lifestyle" of (super)car ownership i.e. great hotels, fantastic driving roads, watches, etc. This new addition to your channel fits in perfectly with those other aspects simply because cars like the E30 M3 is where so many current supercar owners started (and some of us never left.) I've owned quite a few E30 M3's over the years and as you stated in the video, they aren't powerful by today's standards. They're not as fast in the 0-60 or the top end. But if you keep the revs up over 4k it's a fantastic "momentum" car in the curves and gets from 45mph to 90mph in a heartbeat. BTW, every year or two I take a trip from my home in America to go and watch my beloved Manchester United. In the days between games I do "car stuff." 15-20 yrs ago I had two separate opportunities to buy a JC edition E30 M3 in England. One of them was offered to me for about $16k (US) which was a bit pricey because I'd just paid about $12k for a very low mileage '90 E30 M3. I kick myself often for not buying that car for it most likely would've been the most astute financial investment I've ever made. Not to many JC editions in America, but when you do find one they are well into the six figures. Anyway great job as usual James. Look forward to more videos on classics along with the fantastic videos we all look forward to throughout the week. Cheers lad!
A stunning condition example to source for a test drive. Superb review and really appreciate you sharing this special and rare car with us. What a series!!!
Probably my favorite motorcar of all-time closely behind the Lotus Elan. Today we are so enamored with power/speed/acceleration. Chassis will always be job one, in my view. give me 90, 140, 215 horses in a car that carves out the twisties and B-roads. Those cars are elite for my money. Please do a Peugeot 205 GTI, Escort Cosworth, 968 CS, or Clio Williams if you haven't already.
Good choice of car. BMW we’re never really about the exhaust sound but more about the drive. The e30 and e36s were, some say, the last real drivers cars BMW made. I tried an M235i last year and whilst packed full of the tech goodies, it didn’t give me as much fun as my 1995 e36 coupé (not even an M version). Great series looking forward to the next episode.
No variable valve timing or anything either, just four cylinders, 16 valves and two fixed timing camshafts. They even use an old fashioned sliding door afm not a maf or map.
Loved my Old E30 M3, my model was an old Cecotto as well, no real premium for a Cecotto all those years ago. I had a dark silver colour one and with a set of dunlop Formula R's and Bilstein suspension and revised roll bars was a superb track car as well and fast road hoot. My seats were cloth if I recall. I had the best track day ever in this car at Spa, wonderful memories. Although my worst memory was being banned for 3m for doing 119mph on the M5 on bright clear sunday morning with no other cars on the road apart from a Police car on bridge... - Ooops. Oh and I paid £7k for it and sold it for about the same some years later
Seems everyone beat me to cecotto not Secotto !Lol fair play though man these modern classic episodes are spot on...adds so much more depth than the typical shmee video. Next video? ...maybe a turbo 2 Renault? ...porker 944 turbo ...or the Lancia thema 8.32?
I owned a 1990 M3. I added Bilsteins, Shrick cams, larger exhaust, EVOII front spoiler, Recaro seats, 3pc 17 inch wheels and 35 series tires, close ratio 5sp etc...Drove it at a number of US and Canadian tracks.
This is BOMB Mr. James! Kinda reminds me of Top Gear from early 2000s - which is a massive compliment I think! I want to see what else you got in this series of yours :D Thank you James!
I own a '98 Peugeot 106 Rallye in Indigo Blue. Unfortunately it's being restored at the moment, otherwise I would've driven it to the UK for this series! Love it, keep it up James! 🤘🏼
Love this series, certainly helps the younger petrol heads (of which I am unfortunately not one), to appreciate cars from all era’s, I am amazed that many younger petrol heads I know don’t consider the older cars to be any good, and they’re wrong because many are much better to drive than modern stuff. Please, please, please James do the Alfa Romeo SZ, as a drivers car it was incredible, it could pull 1.1G in the corners using nothing but great suspension geometry and decent rubber, it also has a great story to it!
This took me right back around 10 years ago when myself and a good few of my bmwcc pals regularly tracked our e30m3’s. I do miss having it around but my 46m3 is much more me and a worthy ring companion. Tell you what though, the times I whacked the door card with my left hand when going for a gear.....😳👌🏻👍
Great video!! i have one cecotto edition, same color (macao blue). Of course the magic of this car is not the power, are the things that you feell when you drive it, the old cars have soul.
e30 touring was always my dream classic until i bought one and as they say never meet your heroes this car is exact opposite. its hundreds times better than i ever thought and after 3 years daily driving it it still surprises me how good car it is. and damn reliable too
Because it is an Edition Car, it isn't a Tuner Car, and to be honest, the M3 needs more horses. None the less, thank you for the overlook, nice series, and till we are talking tuners, a review of a König Car would be a dream. Keep going
The channel is getting way better... also love it that you're going into (details) & features on classics. Also none of the horrid music. Thumbs up. 👍👍
Also that series/shape M3 & M5 was when BMW build quality was at it's very best. After those build quality went downwards. I've also had the opportunity to drive those M3 & M5's & yes (still) brilliant.
Haha..you found one..i didnt know about the details and specifics though..awesome dude awesome. Well now you gotta drive its rival at the time the Mercedes 190E Cosworth..this is awesome..i cant believe you found an old skool M3. James much love for the series buddy. Thanks for the awesome content and keep it coming.
10:55 There never was a UK specific RHD M3 in any variant (other than the officially imported M3s having MPH speedometers). ALL E30 M3s left the factory as LHD cars. There were however, a number of UK BMW dealerships (e.g. Bird's), and other independent tuning specialists e.g Hartge and Autobahn who did convert LHD M3s to RHD. The total number of E30 M3s produced was exactly 17,970. Excellent road review; very enthusiastic and informative. Just one issue with the owner of the car; the front grille badge is incorrect. It should be an M3 badge not an M badge.
Great car choice, I'm actually old enough to remember these, and I had a business in the motor trade when they were just appearing in the used market. Great fun to drive. Not sure if you can find one, but an original Audi Quattro would be a good shout for a feature. Same era, but the car that arguably transformed rallying. Without it, you probably wouldnt have the RS6 and other fast audis, at least not as we understand them today.
Hey Mr JWW, loving th modern classics section- something I always wanted to do myself.. On the E30 M3, the exhaust was actually a dtm tip, probably made by Scorpion- it was a popular, reliable mod on older M cars- I had one on my E34 M5 (please feature one of these- the best supersaloon ever).
Nice serie around the youngtimers. I had a E30 too. But a 6-in line (323i). What great cars the E30’s are. Can’t wait for the Mercedes EVO and the Audi 90!!!
James I really love your channel. Every video is epic. I think it would be nice to drive a lancia thema, because it is a pretty unkown car but very special!
DCfreakshow a lot of modern cars have a great big plastic cover over the engine. I don’t think they serve a real purpose except to hide the mechanical components. It’s probably cheaper to mold a piece of plastic than it is to finish the cam cover and other engine components to a high standard. It’s a trend I really hate. Older cars with exposed engines components are so much cooler.
Great video of my favourite generation of M3. Think I'd rather have an Evo 2 or Sport Evo but nice to get up close and see the details, Nakamichi CD player and all.
This Series is King
This is in my top 5 favourite modern classics. BMW have always been my favourite as when I 1st got my glasses as a kid I could see them coming from the kidney grill at the front

993 GT2 would be a hell of car.
Thanks for the great video as always!
and 964 rs
there is no way to avoid the Mercedes 190E EVO II now! Thank you for the great work!
Cheers!
Top video, as for the future, a drive in a Ford RS500 would be great
Keith Alexander Or even an RS200 pal👍🏻

Still one of the all time greats! Glad you mentioned the pedals it’s something BMW get so right
It’s Cecotto not Secotto
Pronounced Che-kotto
@biocybernaut They even butcher their own language, so yeah :)
I'm not even going to watch the rest of the video. He's meant to be a petrolhead yet pronounces is Sickotto 😆🤦♂️ Next week - the McLaren Seena
Sorry had to turn it off… too many SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSecccccoottttooooo's - as a Lancia owner it grates so much.
LOL like when British person pronounces Ibiza
I-B-I-pull your tongue out and twirl it like a snake-A
This video is really nicely put together. Really good, snappy editing especially just before you go for a drive. Not to mention that You’ve become a little bit of a british Doug DeMuro in this one ;)
Błażej Wianecki lol I was waiting for quirks and features too
What do you mean it doesn't sound very great? That sound is so pure. Something i feel like many newer cars are missing.
Everybody is going on about Cecotto Secotto but those glasses look spot on. This might sound bit weird but you dress accordingly for every occasion and your style goes with everything you drive. Finally a honest non inflated _like a god_ review. And this is coming from absolute BMW owner and geek.
Mate can you try a NSX Type R (NA2)? It'll blow your mind off for sure!
Sunny Lam, I think that could be the “forever” car that he buys for his son
Yes please! I'd love for him to drive something Japanese
It would be cool if you were to review the Z3M coupe or the Z4M coupe. Both are Legendary..
Agreed
I'm sooooo happy some one is really starting to dig into this era of cars
With your recent format changes you are completely on the right track....👍
Still one of my favourites M3 out there..absolutely Stunning!
I am not at all a BMW fan. Usually I skip any videos with BMW in the title. But Mr. JWW made it worthy of my time. That's special.
love this series, this is what the car hobby is all about, not just the newest super/hypercars, but also legends from the past.

You should get your hands on a BMW M5 E34. I miss the 3.8litre I had so much.
I like these cars too and still friendly prices at the moment, also the E34 Alpina models , the BMW E39 are bargains
James is actually getting AMAZING at reviewing cars! I can't think of anyone i’d rather watch.

Nice upload James, takes me back to my youth when I had an E30...just wish I had kept it now. Dam it!
James I think why we love this series so much is because more of us actually have these kind of cars.
Slowly becoming my favourite series on TH-cam
Found this channel beacuse of this series...and it just keeps getting better and better...amazing.
I found your "is back the way forward" (or something like that lol) idea very intreguing. Food for thought definitely. Thats somthing new to learn, not everyone knows abbout the cecotto, cool insight content mrjww 👍🏼
The E30 M3 is such a cool car! It sure isn't fast but it doesn't need to be fast to be fun.. And it looks just amazing. I love the boxy design of it!
You can make them quite fast if you’d like too
What a tasty car to introduce to us! Awesome!
What a sick car, nice video!

A stunning condition example to source for a test drive. Superb review and really appreciate you sharing this special and rare car with us. What a series!!!
Any blue oval that has a Cosworth on it badge would be awesome!

Even before i watch this video. Yes, Yes, Yes you Absolute Legend!
Been enjoying these vids!! Well done, especially in describing driving experience!
Big respect for reviewing this legend great series
In what universe is 215hp pathetic for an N/A 4 cylinder, especially one from the late 80s?
Lmao that's what i thought myself......the 2015 civic si was the last n/a civic......and that made 200 hp..............
@@MiguelGarcia-vj7oo Lol right and it had a 2.4...

James please do the supercharged John Cooper works mini! It'll even be a throwback to your first car

Thank you so so much for doing this cracking video, this is one of the best reviews of BMW E30 M3
One of your best reviews. The editing is 👍. Really good job. Love this series.
Great video JWW 👍 you are living my boyhood dream, driving this ultimate driving machine.
Here's one for a Modern Classic, the Lotus Carlton. Great video on the original M3
Awesome edit. This vibe and style is perfect for this series!

That car is painfully gorgeous!
"Creating your own story between every gear shift." Quite the journalistic wordsmith Herr James. 👏🏽👏🏽
Love the series!! Keep em coming.
Come on!! Mr JWW: What do you want to see in the modern classics? Me commenting: “E30 M3” bloody awesome!
Brilliant series! More like this!
Why not one of the most forgoten (super)car of the 90's ? Lotus Carlton ?
Gonnçalo Maria Monteiro bravo great suggestion
yea that was nice . brilliant review. thanks james
A true, raw classic that still looks great
All e30 m3 are left hand drive even Roberto Ravaglia edition ( 25 pieces out of Cecotto 505 ) which was specific for uk
The Roberto Ravaglia M3s all came in LHD still
All e30 M3's were originally produced in lhd. Any rhd examples would have had a conversion carried out
Hey Mr JWW, loving th modern classics section- something I always wanted to do myself..
On the E30 M3, the exhaust was actually a dtm tip, probably made by Scorpion- it was a popular, reliable mod on older M cars- I had one on my E34 M5 (please feature one of these- the best supersaloon ever).
@MrJWW love the Requiem for a Dream nod in the edit!!!
Engine cover? That's Intake plenum mate. Cars didn't need engine covers back then.
@DCfreakshow It is not clear but NVH and to protect exposed wiring as engines are not self contained as they used to be?
DCfreakshow a lot of modern cars have a great big plastic cover over the engine. I don’t think they serve a real purpose except to hide the mechanical components. It’s probably cheaper to mold a piece of plastic than it is to finish the cam cover and other engine components to a high standard. It’s a trend I really hate. Older cars with exposed engines components are so much cooler.
Great video of my favourite generation of M3. Think I'd rather have an Evo 2 or Sport Evo but nice to get up close and see the details, Nakamichi CD player and all.
There will be a day, when James looks back on his collection of shades and the journey's they went on together. I will watch 100%
Aaahhhhhhh. Cassette holder. Had that in my 1989 Ford Sierra iS. Loved that car.
