It' a four cylinder naturally aspired engine with lots of torque. In todays power bands, yes it is slow but not for an '88 in '88. I could chirp my tires from first to second. Where it beats the comp in it's day is in handling. I used to cross the Mingus Mtns between Jerome and Prescott and the go-cart feel of the car killed those curves. American rally cars built in those days killed EU rally cars in the straight away but when you got to S curves, BMW's got the time back. Most fun car I ever owned.

Missed some of the most amazing quirks, Doug! The rear window and C-pillar were moved back and given a shallower angle than the base 3-Series in order to reduce rear aero lift at speed. In your video, you can see the extra row of “mouse fur” parcel shelf behind the rear speakers that fills the gap to the base of the repositioned window. Acutally BMW turn signal design is very-very bad. When you take a left turn for example, you pull the stalk down. Problem is that the stalk pops back to it’s original position instead staying in the “down” position. No wonder BMW drivers never use it, it’s ridiculous. (Edit: It doesn’t apply pre 2000 models I think)
I drove one of these that was for sale near me. They wanted 10k for it in 2012. I loved it, but the previous owner had put in a weird sequential gearbox with straight cut gears and it sounded too weird for a daily driver. Still very fun to drive and experience though.
I bought an 88, same color, for my 17 year old son as a first car. It was cheap ($4k) but after getting it up to snuff, and trying to teach him how to drive it with that touchy clutch, I sold it and got him a 86 E30 4dr (also stick since kids need to know how to drive a stick). He was pretty upset about the whole deal but he got over it (has an E46 M3 now). It took a while for me to get over it after I saw what they're selling for now. I sold his for $7500 and it was a nice example. My only negative was I thought 1st gear was way too short.
I own an E39 and I never realized how big they are even on this car. I'm not saying they're huge, in fact they are perfectly in proportion with the rest of the car, but when swapping the kidney frames, I noticed that my face could almost fit in one. Now compare the E39 to modern BMWs and you see how huge the kidneys have become.
I had an e28 with a lot of the same features, a couple things: the “Check” light flashes because the brake lights are one of the things it checks, and it can’t do that until you put your foot on the brake. If a check light stays on, that light will flash in the dash until you push the check button in the ceiling. Also, in the little button pod in the dash, the numbers can be used to set an immobilizer code that will actually set an alarm off if you try and start it too many times without entering the code, kinda cool!
I will always have a soft spot for BMWs…As a young kid in the 90s seeing them on the road always did something to me. Something about BMWs… The styling, performance, livability etc…the ultimate cars.. and I still feel that way to this day.
I have an E46 and it's definitely my favorite feeling turn signal stalk. Luckily I'm not an ass and I've always used my signals very proper since I started driving.
I went with my dad on a business trip to London in 1990 and got to ride in a NEW E30 M3! We were picked up at Heathrow and driven around in a co-worker’s Euro spec Red/Grey 1990 M3. A phenomenal experience and probably a big part of my car obsession today! I’ve been waiting to see Doug review one for years. One difference I see: the Euro spec had a manual sun roof crank handle, not electronic buttons! Great job Doug!
It’s crazy to think there was a period in time where these were basically worthless. No one wanted them, on the second hand market they were just 4-5k. Now they are worth more than everything I own 🤦♂️ Edit: I guess a few of you don’t believe me. Go to VINWiki and lookup The April Fools Joke I Forgot About. Ed talks about one that was purchased in the early 2000s for $3500
The Ferrari Dino also comes to mind, and the 1st gen Acura/Honda NSX. Both cars I used to oogle as a young adult in local trader magazines, and think to myself "if I could just come up with a little more money...", now they're insane prices.
"the biggest mistake BMW is making as a company, aside from the X4" ..... *the X1, X2, new 2 series, 4 series grill, X6, 7 series grill, piped in engine noise, and every grand 'coupe' has entered the chat* also the R18 is bloated but we'll save BMW Motorrad for another day.
I have two E30s in Germany, a 318i and a 320i M package. While neither were in the same category as the M3, but were still the "ultimate driving machines" they were advertised to be. That example is absolutely stunning, how anyone could keep a car with over 200K miles on it in such immaculate condition is beyond me! Kudos to the owner, and I am extremely envious that Doug got to drive it and I didn't!
@@jamesfraley2715 Yeah but my 07 Golf has one. Infotainment systems have only come in in the last 10 years. It's like saying the car is powered by an early version of the electric motor.

On my old e30 320i it was a fun game to see how many lights you could get to stay on. I thought I'd win a prize if I got all of them lit up. I did, the gearbox fell apart, along with the water pump...

First it was the 2016 M2 that was "the best M car." Then the 1M was the "best BMW of all time." Then the M2 competition was the "ultimate M car." Now, the 80's e30 M3 is his "all time favorite BMW" We're gonna need a spreadsheet to track all of Doug's favorite BMWs.
@@bowrocker Good point. You can't know if the buyer bought into the E30 hype or was just looking to re-live the past after hitting it big. I personally like older performance cars because you can use more of their potential. Modern performance cars can't be pushed on the street without risking jail. If I was looking to relive the past, though, I think I'd invest in a driver, although maybe a $250K classic car is the buyer's idea of a driver.
Having owned a BMW MINI with their ridiculously-designed stay-on-center turm signal stocks that return to neutral position similar to a washer fluid stock, it's much easier to not use the signals at all vs accidentally leaving it on for minutes before you finally hear the turn signals blinking quietly
I literally just listen to the doug score at the end I watched like 2 to 3 minutes of the video unless I I'm really interested in the car like the ford bronco I will watch the video even though it would probably be a 10 years video with all the quirks are fixtures
The buttons with the numbers 1, 10,100,1000 were used to set the code with the button on that screen. When you had the code set, then the car needed the code to start up otherwise the engine would only crank continuously, but it wouldn't start up. This "code" button should have been explained in the video Doug, and you did not do that also at the e34 m5 video, which has the same button, with the same function. It's a shame you didn't mention because it's a cool feature that 99% of the cars nowadays still don't have. Anyway, nice video!
I set mine one night and forgot what i set or just made an error setting it. Was rushing to work the next morning and it wouldn't start! Lol. Waited for the dealer to open to ask what to do. Simply disconnect the negative battery cable and reconnect. All fixed. Lmao! Fun times!
@@trollwaffen1248 I hope he does. But I am outraged at Doug's missing the extra storage compartment behind driver in S2000 review. P.s awesome nic @Libertarian guy
I was going to say the same! I have an 88 convertible that is mint and I use that code when parking in sketchy parking lots. I love this car so much. Hilariously my 325i convertible was more than this M3 new :). Definitely has not kept up the same value.
Doug left out some neat stuff! The top right light is missing from the check panel; it was "Engine Oil". Its missing because its function was incorporated into the oil temperature gauge on the bottom portion of the tachometer. On normal e30, that gauge was an instant economy gauge That little flashlight was pretty neat in that you didn't have to worry about batteries being dead, because it had a rechargeable battery and its receptacle in the glove box had charging posts Those chunky rear speakers are that way because this example was equipped with the premium sound option, which featured larger, 2- way speakers (the angled bit is the tweeter) By putting them in pods like that, BMW didn't have to modify the hole already cut for speakers. The base option sat pretty flush, but used dinky 4" speakers
Doug, thanks so much for the trip down memory lane. I never got the E30 M3 we all coveted so ferociously. But, of the E30 series I had a 318i, 325e, 325i, 325i Convertible and the freakishly awesome 325ix with Ferguson Four Wheel Drive. I remember the check panel, the service indicator, the vacuum gauge for MPG...all of it. You missed the antenna at the front of the roof, the locking BBS center caps and the fact that the entire truck lid was unique. Of course so, back then was a 16-valve 4-cylinder. But, after putting my service manager's kids through various Ivy League schools and Berklee College of Music, I stopped driving BMW's and stayed with SVX, Spec. B and a few WRX...and my Subaru service manager put his kids through college himself. Best Regards.
Brian Puente no what? M3 is coming, and they split them up so M4 could be a coupe and M3 a sedan which I think is ridiculous because they’re mechanically the same and E36 era had a sedan M3 and so did the E9X chassis
There's someone who has one stationed in the parking lot where my parking spot is as well. It's literally sitting there for years on-end and I've only ever seen the owner drive it ONCE. Pretty cool car though, had a greyish-black color instead.
I bought this same 1988 red M3 back in 1988, when I lived in San Diego.I test drove 30 cars that year, and I knew immediately, after driving the M3, it was the one I would be driving home.I spent many fun filled hours carving up curvy roads; as this car had fantastic handling and grip. I have owned 37 cars in my life, and this is my second favorite behind the Porsche Cayman S.Both cars gave me a great sense of freedom and joy.
I got one from a company in the UK because mine was missing, and when I got it, it still worked flawlessly with the original light. I think they put new batteries in them. Sadly, because the car isn't on the road much, I think the battery doesn't even charge anymore now. I'll fix it one day :)
As an E30 M3 owner I‘ve been waiting desperately for you to finally make this video! It’s just really unfortunate that you weren’t able to find a nicer and more original example of this car!!! Non factory insulation, wheels, strut brace, amp in trunk, suspension, seats... I could go on and on. Unfortunately this car is a misrepresentation of all the clean examples out there :( Also... you failed to mention the C-Pillar/ Trunk / Roof.
To me, the E30 is the greatest car design of all time. And the history to it, especially that of how the touring model came about is about the sickest story in car engineering there is. This M3 is such a beauty. In Germany, there is just no way you can possibly still get your hand on one of those, anymore. Every single orihinal one is owned by a true enthusiast, by now.
This was a state of the art race engine for the street. I've had the chance to ride multiple 325i's in coupe, 4door, including a coupe ix from 1990, and in the 90's - the M3 E46 needed to be in the powerband to keep up with these. I can't imagine how good the 2.5 M3 must be.
@@BobThe9534 maintenance really isnt bad for these. They are quite simple and a lot of the wear and tear parts are shared across other models. They only get expensive when you get into the Specific M3 things(like rebuilding the motor, or rebuilding the problematic and special 5 speed gearbox) and even then compared to a similar task on a modern performance car they probably still fall cheaper.
its not a concept, unfortunately its actually happening. This should mean 2020 M4/3's hold their value i would imagine, nobody got time for this weird shit
“this driver experience can not be replicated.. there’s too many safety regulations that keep cars heavy”.. except Mazda actually does it with the Mx5 weighing exactly like its mk1 and still lighter than the mk1 M3. so it actually is possible and not a regulations issue?

I bought an 88, same color, for my 17 year old son as a first car. It was cheap ($4k) but after getting it up to snuff, and trying to teach him how to drive it with that touchy clutch, I sold it and got him a 86 E30 4dr (also stick since kids need to know how to drive a stick). He was pretty upset about the whole deal but he got over it (has an E46 M3 now). It took a while for me to get over it after I saw what they're selling for now. I sold his for $7500 and it was a nice example. My only negative was I thought 1st gear was way too short.
80s BMW: the era when kidney grills actually had the actual size of a kidney
I own an E39 and I never realized how big they are even on this car. I'm not saying they're huge, in fact they are perfectly in proportion with the rest of the car, but when swapping the kidney frames, I noticed that my face could almost fit in one. Now compare the E39 to modern BMWs and you see how huge the kidneys have become.
@J Blank imagine in 2100, it will just be a grille with wheels and a cabin inside.

The turn signal only feels so crisp because it has never been used.

Doug left out some neat stuff!
The top right light is missing from the check panel; it was "Engine Oil". Its missing because its function was incorporated into the oil temperature gauge on the bottom portion of the tachometer. On normal e30, that gauge was an instant economy gauge
That little flashlight was pretty neat in that you didn't have to worry about batteries being dead, because it had a rechargeable battery and its receptacle in the glove box had charging posts
Those chunky rear speakers are that way because this example was equipped with the premium sound option, which featured larger, 2- way speakers (the angled bit is the tweeter) By putting them in pods like that, BMW didn't have to modify the hole already cut for speakers. The base option sat pretty flush, but used dinky 4" speakers
Older BMWs are the bees knees! How about an E36 video next?
I’m not a BMW guy, but I would definitely love to own this BMW

Doug, thanks so much for the trip down memory lane. I never got the E30 M3 we all coveted so ferociously.
