- This is the BMW 1M Coupe a parts bin special from M division which saw the application of many E92 M3 components on a 1 Series coupe to make the overnight success that is the BMW 1M.
The BMW 1M was among the first proper M cars to use a turbo charger - while it was not a naturally aspirated engine it was still a big part of its appeal. Driving the rear wheels via a tactile six-speed manual gearbox is a 335bhp twin-turbo 3-litre straight-six engine.
The BMW 1M is one of my all time favourite cars and here's why...

I have owned over 100 cars and the 1M is still my favorite, especially when you factor in price, but buy now before prices skyrocket. I have done a lot of long term reviews on mine and it still runs great !
I love the direction in which the channel is going.. these reviews are fantastic keep them up!

The Car will age better like fine wine without the infotainment system looking extremely dated in 10 years.
the utlimate pocket rocket to cruise around in style and comfort. Those flared wheel arches and aggressive haunches don't do it justice. Saw my first one in Boston years back..

I love the 1M, my friend has one and when the M2 was launched the BMW dealer offered 10k cash and a free M2 for the trade in.......he knocked it back and kept the 1M.

I have always admired these great little cars and recently bought one of only 200 here in Australia. I fully agree with your comments that the numbers don’t really describe the driving experience, it’s just an awesome car to drive and I have a smile on my face the whole time.

@MrJWW I also own a 1M since more than 4 years - excellent review about the feelings of driving this car, but let me get a few things right:
0:29 the car was produced until mid 2012, so a bit more than a year
1:22 the wheels are coming from the e92 competition pack and were not exclusive for the 1M
1:40 first BMW/M car to have air curtains
4:22 Alcantara is not a standard trim on M cars. However you can get the M Performance steering wheel which has alcantara (I have it also, it's great!)
I think it is also worth mentioning that this "Frankenstein" M car has also borrowed the n54 as it has been fitted to the Z4 sdrive35i. Development time was also only 1 year due to the upcoming new 1er generation.

Yes that is true. They cost the same as an M4 in my country. I believe a lot v12 Mercedes Benz will start appreciating too

Had a Z4M also...did a testdrive with a used 1M back in the days. Great car, but coming from a Z4M; I was not 100% convinced about the looks (interior and exterior) and the way it drove... Some time later I did a test drive with a M2 and ordered one the same day (as my daily car) and kept the Z4M. M2 is certainly not a future classic like the 1M, but hey who cares...we live now :) Sad that in 20 years time they will not build cars like this anymore :(

Phenomenal bit of kit.
This car is the reason why I want an M2 manual for my 1st little sports car.
I went from a '13 135i manual w/ M3 control arms to a '18 M2 manual and also have driven a 1M once. I must say, everything he described about the suspension, steering feel and steering wheel itself is spot on.I like my M2, but I LOVED my E82 135 and driving in E82 1M. I miss the thick wheel and how much heavier the steering felt. Something much more rewarding about it.
I have driven the following 4 cars for test purpose (1M vs M2 DCT vs manual M2 vs M4 DCT)... Back in the days I could have bought a used 1M (with 10K euro to spare) or a brand new M2. For a fun-daily-track combination the "manual" M2 was the best choice in my book. The 1M is indeed more special and a bit more raw with more steering feel...but not the greatest car to use everyday and the brakes are indeed crap when going for it. Also the 1M looks were not 100% my taste (personal opinion). The M4 is just not my kind of car...
ronald michelli I did the same, but also had a quaife LSD and Birds suspension. M2 meh for me and I now sorely miss my 135i. Given a choice again I wouldn't bother with the M2. Not particularly reliable either. I would have a fettled 135i or a 1M all day long.

Lovely car James! One of my favorite M cars next to the Z3 M Coupe, E46 M3 and E31 850csi. Definately would love to get to own one someday, It’s just you, the car, a manual transmission and (hopefully) a great curvy road hahaha. Loved the phrase where you said M cars make you smile and i have to completely agree with that, we own a Phoenix Yellow 2002 E46 M3 and god bless those Sunday morning route-discovering through small roads cruising mountains, and also can’t forget those 7000rpms accelerations from that screamy S54 straight six! Can’t wait for the next Modern Classics episode, keep up the good work! 🤘🏼👊🏼👍🏼
Only 450 ever made for the UK? Is that it? That explains why the values are still holding. Cracking little car, as much as I admire the tech laden modern M cars, I think the best BMW M cars are the ones that are more simple and driver focused.
But the value in the U.s. is very strong too. It was a great drivers car but I thought the styling was a little bit questionable.
In the USA I saw one in the dealer. It was used had no options like 12k miles and it was being sold for more than new.

Hey James, I'm absolutely loving the modern classics series! Keep it up! As for suggestions for future episodes, how about the Audi Quattro, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 or a classic Porsche 911?

The 1M is fully M underneath. The M240i is in old money a "sport". M240i is quicker though.

2011 GT2 RS, manual 600+BHP RWD Porsche widowmaker! I'd bet your expressions would be epic first time it hits boost. I've always had a soft spot for the Ferrari 550 maranello and the 575's, especially with a manual.

Great series you've got going now. You should do a z4m coupe next - was very similar to the 1m in that it was a parts bin special. It had the s54 engine from the e46 M3 and other parts from the e46 csl

James I love small BMWs....back when I lived in Germany, 85 or so, I had a 323i, tuned by Zender! One of the best driving cars I’ve had!

@Michael Jackson - I have a Mini Cooper S with a MiniMadness kit, and a brake & handling package and every time I think about selling it I go for a drive and come home with such a huge smile on my face, I change my mind. IMO, good acceleration up to about 160 KPH, strong brakes and go-kart handling are all you really can use unless you're chasing lap times... Noisy enough to be entertaining and a manual transmission. 😁
I remember buying Euro car mags as a teen and seeing all the Zender BMW configurations..nostalgia..other tuners at the time included AMG ,AC Schnizter and there was another major one...help me out..
MrJWW you might as well follow this up with an E92 M3. Arguably one of the greatest engines BMW ever made.
These are the type of videos you should make all the time.

Love these cars and I sorely miss my N55 135i E82 coupe that had the Birds suspension and quaife LSD fitted. Given a choice again I'd keep it over my F87 BMW. The E82 135i was a rare beast too.

This is the only BMW I would ever buy...
I always wanted one. In 2011 when it came out here in the states they were charging 15-20k over sticker. Sadly that made it out of my price point. Ended up getting a 2011 Audi S4. But I would have loved the 1 series m coupe. Today it’s still gorgeous and aged very well.
