Nissan Leaf 40 kWh Review

- Here's my thaughts on the Nissan Leaf, after two years of ownership I have found the 40kWh leaf to be a capable short range EV packed with features. However competition is now overtaking many of the capabilities of this car, combined with a few own goals from Nissan, is this car still a good buy in 2022?

I purchased my Leaf Tekna 62 kWh in 2020 and it has been GREAT and totally reliable. The thing I don't understand is that most of the new EVs still have only just about the same range and performance. My Leaf does 220 miles and goes from 0 - 60 in 6.7 secs. I only ever charge it at home.
Just got a brand new one on lease. I love it and I'm getting a new car for £110 a month when taking into account the reduction in my monthly running costs.

Charger wise I haven’t had a problem. There’s so many and they aren’t going to be removed. Great car.
Thank you for the review Iain. I agree about chademo, it will be difficult in future to rapid charge and these cars could still be around in twenty years. It's approaching a year since I purchased a Zoe ZE40. I like the car but I don't love it and the lack of rapid charging has dented my confidence on using it for longer journey's. As a daily driver it's brilliant though. I was considering the Leaf as a potential replacement but I think there are some other good candidates out there. Good luck with your new car Search. Out of interest do you think you will keep the Zoe?
Iain I would say that is a fair assessment of the LEAF in 2022. I just purchased a 40kWh Acenta a week ago (2018 with 15,000 miles on it). I went into it knowing all of these short falls. I do not plan to ever use it for more than its range so slow charging it will work for me. During looking I tried everything 2nd hand up to £20k and also up to £25k to be sure nothing was just out of reach budget wise. I felt this was the best for that budget even though I totally agree its flawed with Chademo and rapidgate a major issue for long range use. I was tempted to get the Zoe 50 but it was too small. I wont slag off the competition as I own a LEAF but its safe to say if you are a car person, avoid sub £25k EVs! That said, 1 week in and I am happy with the choice. For context though I do have a 2nd car (wifes car) that is petrol so long range is not an issue on those few times we need it. Once a suitable true 200 mile car with CCS drops into my budget (sub £20k) it will get swapped without hesitation but for now Im satisfied.
A fair review, picked up our new e+ Leaf Tekna earlier this year. Agonised over the CHAdeMO thing but with the extra range I’m not likely to public charge much and you can be choosier about where you do it. After having a CCS car and avoiding the motorway services when it was Ecotricity, I’m fine with heading to Instavolt or Shell or Osprey off the motorway. On the deals available in the autumn, Leaf was better value than even the supermini stuff, while being better specced (eg propilot, 360 cams), quicker and riding much better. It’s an appliance for everyday boring driving but really good at it. Still a good option in 2022 if it’s cheap enough, and free of all the quirks and software issues that newer, more expensive rivals have.

I only ever use my Nissan Leaf 40KWH around town and within 60 mile radius and so I only charge at home on type 2 adapter. No worries. Always use my hybrid car for longer journeys. Setup works great! Fantastic car, love it!

Actually I bought a low mileage Leaf a few weeks ago because of CHAdeMO as I want to go V2G (the Wallbox Quasar has just had Australian approval), but you've been there and done that.
In Australia the plug situation is different - due to the hostility towards EVs shown by our federal government the only source of low-priced BEVs is second-hand Leafs from Japan which gives a higher penentration of CHAdeMO than Europe.
Ultimately with CCS due to support V2G from 2025 and the large number of Leafs around I expect there will be a bidirectional CCS upgrade available.
Re. your other comments, it chimes with my feelings that it is competent basic design that Nissan hasn't spent enough developing, notably in the lack of battery cooling and the dated infotainment and chaotic minor control layout. Two good features you don't mention, which are being copied by other manufacturers, are the single pedal mode and the 360 degree camera.
I've found ours quite good to drive - it's quite nimble for its weight and with eco mode turned off and in B or D you can have cornering fun with the instant throttle response. Maybe your experience is coloured by the poor tyres.
For our needs, two retirees, mostly urban driving (we have a Polo for longer trips) it's a comfortable, well equipped, roomy hatchback intro to BEVs and we can live with its faults and limitations. Horses for courses.
Leafs seem to be more popular in the UK than the US. I've had my 40Kw Leaf for 9 months now. I purchased it to complement my F150. Awesome for around town trips. The F150 is for recreation and long-distance trips.

There was a scare going round the EV community about the time of the video that Chademo is being scaled back. But you just need to see zap-map to see the UK is a wash with chademo chargers - no problems with charge points
I test drove one and noticed the wind noise is a little loud, otherwise it drove nice
A couple more observations. I've never had the problem with noise from the passenger's seatbelt. Also on mine (2019, but one of a batch that had to wait ages for batteries!) D mode still has regen, albeit less than B mode. Note that Australian-sold Leafs are built in the UK.

I had a Leaf30 for 3 years and a Leaf40 for 3 years. My 19 plate Leaf40 had the same tyres (they must be standard) they were fine for me. The front passenger seatbelt was the same for me!! I usually had it plugged in when the seat was empty. I had the Tekna so the headlights were better and the one pedal driving and adaptive cruise control was fab!

If you only do a few long journeys per year just make sure you have good breakdown as a back up, not ideal but with the money saved Vs other EVs it's worth a punt I've just put a deposit on one because I pretty much just home charge
we just bought a 2020 40kw tekna for 25k. oh wow what a car. so nice to drive and costs us 3 quid to fill it up. we're saving a fortune on fuel.
if you're having worries about range then dont. it will do 150 miles on full charge. as long as u dont have to travel more than that each day then go for it.
the heating system and adaptive cruize control is awesome.
i'm a hard man to please and i'm over the moon with our leaf.
It’s a great car, I guess it could have been out of this world amazing if they had given it a better battery and moved to CCS
The one thing The Leaf and Chademo have that others don't is bidirectional energy movement. Vehicle to grid and vehicle to home.
You can DIY your own off grid or on grid system if you want to.
Compare the storage and cost of a 40Kw or 62Kw Leaf to a Tesla Wall.

CHADAMO - surely you can get a converter lead ?
I haven’t seen anything on the market however it would be similar to the Tesla adapters. I’m sure it would be possible, but not cheap, the connectors are crazy expensive

It would be something like this, but the custom type two connector is only good for teslas. It would need to be changed to a ccs and the appropriate software designed too.

My wife throws up at the looks of the original leaf and not much improved for new face lift . My reason for not purchasing a leaf is , chademo but lack of half decent ac charging on board is big negative . Battery lack of any battery cooling . Saying that price probably better than a lot of competition and spec interior better than a lot. Bigger battery 62 kWh battery. Chademo dead I’m afraid , even new Nissan will have ccs. Good time to change , sorry for the next owner
Im trying to buy a 2023 40kw but only 183 LEAFS are allocated to Canada this year Total! I would say there is competition but there is not actually any competition, just vaporware

Wouldn’t pay 10000 for it . Sounds like a real excuse to keep your ice car or buy anything but this car new or secondhand
