    I've owned a Leaf 40kW for over 2 years. 25000 miles on the clock (even including Covid) and I absolutely love it. Range for me (with the 40kW battery) is about 130 to 140 miles - possibly more depending on how I drive, but that's fine for me as most journeys are less that 80 miles. It hasn't stopped me doing long journeys. I've done East Anglia to Devon and back, to Scotland and back without any issues - you just need to plan a bit. Single pedal operation (e-pedal) is just brilliant, hardly used the brakes at all in 2 years - the pads and discs look like new still. Do I still love it - a solid YES.

      Love mine too. If it wasn't for a regular journey around the M25 and back (165mile total) which absolutely requires a 1hour+ stop at a rapid charger, I'd say its prefect. As it is, my lease is up soon, and I'm looking at what I can afford to get me a realistic 200 miles of electric range next.

      Totally agree I imported a UK new tekna 40kw as I didn't want a Jap import and my commute is 50 km round trip so its perfect for the job. With the sudden increase in fuel prices it's definitely a win and yes I guess it could be more up to date but it does me just fine, anyway I couldn't justify the extra $30K spend on a Kona, Model 3 etc. One happy 2020 Leaf driver!

    I have my 2019 tekna 40kwh for 6 months. I still love it everyday. I love real buttons, I love e-pedal, I love pro pilot. It is just so much fun to drive. I have made so far 7000km, never had a range anxiety. I used couple of times rapid charging too. Never had an issue. Built quality is high and driving is fun. Highly recommended!
    I drive very often vw Id.3 for my work. It looks more modern than leaf and has a longer range. But the leaf is much more comfy, has bigger space and much better built in quality. Vw is like a toy, leaf is like a car.

      Yes, and there's still a very big reason to buy one. Last year I purchased a left over 2019 SV Plus w/tech package in April. As a left over model it was discounted from $41,000 to $28,500 (about $31,000 after tax/tags etc..) and since the Leaf still qualifies for the full $7500 gov't incentive and the state $3000 incentive my final cost was only $20,500. Nissan still has not sold 200,000 Leafs in the U.S. so the incentives still apply. You don't always get the selection when shopping for left over models but there are still plenty to choose from.

    i used to have a 2020 leaf tekna 40kw, now i have a 2021 leaf 62kw tekna. between the old leaf and the one i got new, ive had, i think, 3 other EV's. A hyundai kona 40kw, a ioniq 38kw and a e-golf. Between all of them, well, for comfort and quality feel, the E-golf slam dunks all of the other ev's ive mentioned. i would go for a nicely specced 2020 e-golf over a 2020 leaf tekna 40kw any day of the week. in reality a 2020 e-golf has the same range as a 2020 40kw leaf and is overall a nicer car. but i will give credit to a 40kw kona, i can go almost 300km's on a single charge, the leaf and e-golf, you can push to 250km on a single charge without climate on, i wouldnt trust neither to go any further than 230km's at most with climate on.
    I chose my current 2021 leaf because, well. it will easily do 350km's on a single charge, and i only paid 29.000,- euro for it ( aprox 24.700,- GBP ). a new 2022 leaf 62kw will set me back 39.648,- euro ( 33944,- GBP ). i think that's outrageous price for a EV with CHADEMO fast charging and only AC charges on 1 phase.. you need 32amps to charge 7,2kw per hour on a normal home charger, most normal households only has aprox 25 amps.. so that means, your leaf will only charge at a rate of 3,7 kw an hour on 16 amps at home!
    I like my 62kw leaf tekna for many reasons, but i also think, the interior is dated and the DC chademo charging single phase AC charging is a poor, poor decision by Nissan. they could at least put a 2 phase AC charging port ( 3 would be optimal! ) in the leaf, so it only needs 16 amps to charge at a rate of 7,2kw per hour and thrash the Chademo charge port for a normal CCS DC fast charging port.
    Imo, the leaf need a few changes to be a nice EV in 2022. its such a shame Nissan cant be bothered to do it, its not like it'll take a lot of time or money to do it really and would make such a big difference and make it so much more compelling!

    I am one of those who bought a Nissan Leaf in 2021. I bought a Tekna with 40 KWh battery pack, last February. Conclusion, I love it every day. e-pedal is my favorite. I have never owned a EV before but I drive constantly VW id.3 and Tesla Model S as a company car. First of all Model S is great great car but different class. It is just too much. And the price is triple of the Leaf. VW id.3 is not my favorite at all. The car is brand new one but has many little failures. Built in quality is low and it is not as fun as driving Nissan Leaf. So I will stick to my Leaf. I know the range is not the best. But who cares? It does the job %90 of the time. I live in The Netherlands and I can drive anywhere I want in my country. In addition, I love the interior and exterior of the Leaf. Just my taste. In my opinion, the price performance ratio of Leaf is very high. And this car is solid as rock.

    Worth mentioning that the leaf is one of the few cars left that uses the ChaDeMo fast-charging system. Originally developed by Nissan and originated in Japan, this method has fallen out of favor in Europe. CCS has become the standard, and with Tesla opening up their network there will be even more CCS points.
    As of now there seem to be only 2 cars left with ChaDeMo (Leaf and plug-in Outlander). The upcoming Nissan model even has left ChaDeMo behind and moved to CCS. With Nissan also also throwing in the towel, I wold seriously question how long ChaDeMo will be around, and what future it has.
    If you always charge at home; or never expect to use fast charging that should not be a problem. But if you tend to keep your car for over 10 years and still like to rapid charge it, this might not be the car for you

    I think you forgot to mention "the elephant in the room". This is the fact that the Leaf still has no active thermal battery management. This is why you see old Leafs that no longer do the 110-120 miles, but instead around 40-50 miles from a full charge. I don't think this will help with the residual values of this car in like 5-7 years time when compared to it's direct rivals which I believe most have active battery thermal management.

      @timaustin2000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To be honest, once they'd brought out the 30KWh Leaf this largely stopped being a problem, as they changed to better chemistry. The longevity of the battery isn't the huge deal breaker it once was but the range drop in cold weather is too high and, even after software updates, it still throttles charging at rapids.
      Active thermal management is a deal breaker overall. Unless you're buying second hand.

    • @ianhamilton3113
      @ianhamilton3113 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's correct for the first generation Leaf but this video is about the second generation. Bigger battery capacity means fewer fast charges which translates to better battery health. Residuals for diesels, now there really IS a problem.

But in my humble opinion I thing you are committing a very serious mistake in switching to a brand new ID3 or 4 VW, already with serious software problems. The Leaf had 10 years EV experience and plenty of time to eliminate the problems. I am not trying to knock VW here, I am merely stating that you should be more careful in your choice and stay with the Nissan with its very good history of reliability. different would be my opinion if you were instead considering a Tesla model 3 widely recognized to be a far superior car.

      @@sat7755 No worries :) Yes new ev's have a lot of bells and whistles which honestly you really don't need in the real world. I've enjoyed my Leaf tremendously. All I could ask for is better efficiency and range. The efficiency is not even a big deal just a nerd thing really, even over years, 3.5miles per kw (roughly what I get) vs 4 in other cars, doesn't make a huge difference in cost. The headline is simply range. Funny how a lot of EV champions say it's not a big deal - to me it really is. I can confidently take 100mile motorway round trip in my 40Kw leaf, but anything further and I'm stressing about if I'll have to stop and find a charger - I really don't ever want to charge anywhere but home for an easy life. For that reason alone I'm looking at something next that can do a "real" 180-200 miles. Yes I'd love something from Tesla too, but I want "golf-ish" size and "golf-ish" price. So I'm still waiting for Elon&Co. to make something like that! If you are cool with the 40kw Leaf's real-world 120-130 mile range, just go for it, you will love it. It drives so well, easy, comfy, practical, big boot and the E-pedal alone is a game changer. Oh and Hybrids? Totally agree... sure, they had their place once, but it's full electric all the way now 👍👍 Best of luck.

    If you line up with the bug headlights though, generally they are directly at the corners.
    Never have eco on though. You won't get any more range vs not. Only difference is how much you have to put your foot down to get the same output. I prefer to just have a light foot.

    I agree the 2021-22 Leaf is a little outdated but bought one anyway because of reliability and Nissan's commitment to EVs. Previously I owned a Ford Focus EV and when the battery died, it would have cost 2X what I paid for the car to replace it because Ford wasn't committed to supporting that battery (it was basically a compliance platform to drive down Fords fleet mpg). If I do have a battery problem, I believe Nissan will be able to repair at a reasonable cost and even replace individual cells.

    Great review. Entertaining and informative. One correction though, the 2010 Leaf range wasn’t 125 miles. Nissan projected a range of 100 miles during development but changed to 85 after production and then changed to 50-130. The EPA set it at 73 miles which sounds about right for the 24kKwh battery. My 2016 30kwh battery has about 24kWh remaining capacity and range is from around 60-80 depending on driving conditions, temp., etc. (which works just fine for my routine😀)

    The leaf has 3 regeneration settings. Normal regeneration in Drive, then put it in boost mode increases the regeneration, not the power output as you might think. Lastly the e-pedal means you barely need the brakes as it will bring the car to a stop at junctions. So, essentially 3 regeneration settings. Had a 19 plate leaf 3 years and its great. Comfortable, quiet and good leg room.

    Bought a new Nissan Leaf Tekna a year ago (2021). One year and 11000 miles later, I still love it. Great driving experience, 0 - 60 in 6.9 seconds on its 160kw motor (221 hp) motor, can outrun my son-in-laws BMW 520i any day! Instant silent torque without the ICE racket. Single pedal driving with e-pedal, more relaxing and doesn’t wear the brakes = less maintenance costs plus no need to clean brake dust off the wheels as there isn’t any. 270mpg equivalent to ICE fuel cost. £220 service after 12500 miles. Cheap insurance. No road tax. Nissan’s high build quality and reliability. 100,000 or 8 year warranty. A proper five seater with loads of head room and a huge boot which happily takes my three labradors for Walkies! Try doing that in an iD3.

    Physical buttons are also far safer than screen icons that you have to take your eyes off the road to operate. The Leaf could become the iconic car of 2021. Nissan has to come to the party, though. They must up the temperature control of their batteries and they must make it easy and reasonably economic to buy a new battery to upgrade your leaf. A conversion kit to turn your used battery into a house battery would also be great.

    I have a 2022 Leaf SV Plus. The cruise control and autopilot (for the price) are very good, energy saving and fun. The guy in the video says there is only one level of brake regeneration, which is incorrect. A better review would have occurred if he knew how to work the car he was reviewing. Shift to drive twice while in e-pedal and you get max regeneration braking… quite simple. His “blue force field” button is the autopilot and cruise control, which is probably my favorite feature of the car. Tough review video on the Leaf for me.

    Serious question: Why/how is one pedal driving "fun"? The two cars I use the most have adaptive cruise so after pushing the brake to start I can do zero pedal driving until I get to the destination most of the time. They slow down and speed up on their own and buttons on the steering wheel can do the job of the gas pedal. AEB will, and has brought the car to a complete stop more than once when deer darted into the road. I consider it convenient, but not fun, especially since my right side doesn't work well to the point that I have to pick that leg up with my hand to even get in the car. I've seen several EV reviews mention it and I just don't see the appeal.

      LEAF is a waste of time. I invested $5K in TSLA stock in 2010 when it had its initial IPO, picked up 250 shares, the stock had a 5x split in August 2020 resulting in 1250 shares. As of 9/30/2021, I am sitting on a nice sum in my IRA. Made only one withdrawal and this has paid for my Tesla Model S LR and I have a Cybertruck reserved, (125,000 place in line). The endless Supercharger system provides "range anxiety" free driving from Key West to Seattle and it lets me know the availability of stalls at my upcoming charging stops. Super acceleration, no BATTERY DEGRADATION, especially love the smart summon on rainy days to come to pick me and the misses up at the door of restaurants. Currently trying the FSD BETA and am stoked. BTW today's closing price was $775. Much better than making a $5,000 down payment on a LEAF when it came out, which I almost did. I saw a Tesla Roadster and had a long chat with the owner and was sold on the system and attention to detail.

    I really really wish Nissan did a full update this Japan motor show, it’s a good car in 64kw mode but it’s lost touch with not only psa , ford and vw , Kia, and Hyundai all have taken more than a big chunk and the continued support for chadamo outside Japan is hurting it , Nissan admit this standards dead due to the demand for ccs to be mandatory in the eu and USA on new cars , and are implementing it on the suv but not the leaf which is more than odd, we know from mules tested in the USA, a 4x4 and crucially water cooled can and have been fitted to the current model frame but there have been no announcements again odd, if Nissan made it a fraction longer so more legroom was available kind of like the old golf plus was to the golf , in a way I kind of miss the split speedo from the mk1, it needs water cooling , ccs 125kw , 11kw ac charging , reach and rake wheel, auto pilot 3.0 recently approved in Japan , matrix headlights , and maybe a new clean slate design , as the mk 2 was heavily criticised by existing users that it didn’t go far enough using most of the existing door cards etc in a way I kind of wish they followed e-Nero in that it looked like a normal car , one think has to be improved on though is the motor type and battery chemistry as the current prism cells have lost touch compared to LG, vw up and coming cells and if gm and Hyundai’s new packs with 800w capability get any traction, Nissan will really be in trouble, an suv based on old tech know to rapid gate won’t be the answer to all there problems and pack swelling on the 40kw reported , Nissan need to get investigating not charge thousands for just out of warranty when the issue was found, with the us market heavily under attack from the gm euv and others , please Nissan don’t kill the leaf

    My neighbor has this car and raves about it, he loves it, says it's the best all rounder for price and spec out there. Meanwhile I will still with my Golf GTE n 25/27miles of electric range haha oh n the blue button is Nissan's pilot system isn't a the safety and automative driving functions the car has mate ( am sure u knew that though) 😉🤦
