    Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that leads to symptoms of dementia. Current therapeutic options are limited to drugs that provide only mild symptomatic benefit. Alzheimer's drugs are believed to work by either preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine or blocking the toxic effects associated with excess glutamate in the brain. This pharmacology lecture covers topics such as pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease, cholinergic hypothesis, amyloid hypothesis, Tau hypothesis, mechanism of action & side effects of cholinesterase inhibitors and NMDA receptor antagonist, future of Alzheimer's treatment. Drugs mentioned include; Donepezil, Rivastigmine, Galantamine, and Memantine.

    This is such a great video. I only knew about the Tau and Beta Amyloid hypotheses.
    There now is a monoclonal antibody that works to target Beta-amyloid plaques and help clear them. Although it does a great job clearing the plaques, it only slows progression of Alzheimers, and does nothing to reverse the problems associated with cognitive decline. Lecanemab has had successful trials AND been approved by the FDA for treatment to slow the progression of EARLY Alzheimers. It has not been tested on later stage alzheimer's patients.

      If you're interested in this video, you may also be interested to know that gut health can certainly play a role in Alzheimer's! Functional medicine is an amazing tool to reverse Alzheimer's. It involves looking at the root cause(s) behind illness, and healing the gut is a part of that!

    Hello! Can someone tell, how does a regular daily consumer identify and distinguish a pharmaceutical grade drug in the market? Any signs, symbols or labels we can look for?
    There are so many bad quality, impure over the counter drugs sold. So we have to know.

    • @jamievenezia7760
      @jamievenezia7760 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      honestly these are all prescription drugs, your MD/physician should be prescribing them to you and then your pharmacist will prepare and deliver them, there should be no market involved. any licensed pharmacist could help with this.

    Is this only for people with Alzheimer’s? It seems like this has benefits to increase and improve healthy young people’s mental capabilities as well? Out of all the side effects mentioned that were worrying to me the worst was insomnia and the effect of these drugs are temporary! Could students use these drugs to study? As in low dosage and responsible use?
