Laziness, probably. As mentioned, this "assault rifle" was originally designed to be a heavy machine gun used by Power Armor units. Fun fact about the M16 with the M203 grenade launcher! The barrel is the same as other service rifle barrels, however, the heat shield is the only thing different, which allows space for the attachment points for the grenade launcher to fit unimpeded : ) So technically it could be called the "grenadier heat shield". Context: I carried this rifle in combat in the USMC.
Little unknown detail, that heatshield was designed for the M16A1, that had triangular handguards which split into left and right. When the M16A2 was designed (By the USMC) the handguards were changed to the rounded style with an upper and lower piece, it also received a slot in the barrel, so you could remove the lower handguard and attach the M203 directly to the barrel. However due to the availability of the Cheese grater handguards most grenadier M16A2s had them, but nowadays with the M16A4 and the M4/M4A1 the M203 gets mounted to the slot in the barrel, with the lower handguard removed.

On the note of Bethesda Assault Rifle vs Obsidian Assault Carbine, Bethesda actually had a very good and pretty comparable design - FO3's Assault Rifle, very reminiscent of HK53/CETME/G3 rifles. Why didn't they utilize that design is beyond me
I really don’t understand why they downgraded the weapon designs so much. The designs in 3 and New Vegas were really good, and they easily could’ve expanded upon those designs with better graphics and hardware

The worst part is people trying to defend it by claiming it was originally meant as a light machine gun. That defense doesn't work for two reasons. First is that Bethesda still chose to call it an assault rifle and two is that there were already light machine guns in the first two games and Tactics that they could've easily remade in the new game.
It boggles the mind that they had the amazing designs of the Fallout 3 Chinese Assault Rifle and New Vegas Service Rifle they could of pulled from but nah they'd rather delegate designing it to an intern who i can only assume was on copious amounts of cocaine
When I first played Fallout 4, I was around 14, knowing nothing about guns. But when I killed a Gunner Captain who held this so called "Assault Rifle", I was weirded out with the thing. And I'm a Halo fan, the UNSC (Humans) had strange-looking guns. As Zach Hazard once said about this gun: "This is not an assault rifle. This is a monstrosity!"
Honestly the humans don't have weird guns, they're all bullpup which is weird for a military but they're all plausible. The smg is kinda stretching it though
The problem with UNSC guns is how bulky they are and that they're using 550 to 600 year old ballistic tech. It also runs into the same problem with the Fallout 4 "assault rifle" of "make it look good when used in power armor". The MA series rifles for example already look pretty big when used by SPARTANs and look ridiculously big when used by marines.
@@DJWeapon8 I think the in universe explanation for that is that humanity has been virtually completely United for centuries before the war with the covenant. They basically just didn’t need to innovate with the military anymore after a certain point, I mean, the warthog is basically just a futuristic jeep.
I think the design is genius. Not only do you get double cooling but by just simply tilting the gun backwards all the water comes out through the air vents. So efficient.
Tbf were only assuming that they’re air vents based on our world, in game/in universe the “vents” are blocked off on the model so the rear part of the barrel may serve some other purpose.
Personally i always went with DegenerateDak's MG69 Assault Rifle Replacer because isntead of replacing it entirely with something like the Service Rifle instead it tries to improve on already existing desing which i think it does a very good job at. I personally like to think that this wasn’t a pre-war machine gun but a weapon made by super mutants to fit in their large hands, since it’s most often found on super mutants and since power armor hands are around the same size, it makes sense to me.
That and we know from lore and the power armor suits left behind that there were a lot of US soldiers who survived initially and had access to their armor. It’s likely when their original weapons degraded beyond use, they crafted these ‘assault rifles’ as makeshift replacements.
@@Boopity7739 If their power armor survived then their firearms would have survived. If the complex machinery of a power armor suit isn't broken down by age then no chance the by comparison simple mechanisms of a firearm would either.
Now THAT would've been a neat idea. And it makes sense that super mutants would favor weapons more suited to their size and that they would try to build their own if they could just find them.
@@1810jeff Power armor is completely environmentally sealed and heavily armored, in the initial stages after the bombing, nothing short of a building collapsing on them would damage the suit. The rifles on the other hand could easily be degraded by debris, mud, and general wear and tear. An M4 ran through mud and ruin will stop functioning well before a tank does, especially when said tank has the mobility of a man and is fusion powered. Hell, they were probably using laser rifles which we see in the intro to FO4, so those definitely broke down and had to be replaced with conventional weapons.
there is another difference between the ASSault rifle and the mag feed of the M249 SAW. The fallout ASSault rifle doesn't jam or double feed when using a magazine like the SAW does, if you get the wrong magazines from supply, which happens 99% of the time. The geniuses that designed the SAW mags made them look EXACTLY like the standard M16/M4 mags. No markings to denote the weaker spring that is in the SAW mags. Also, what is the mod the is retexturing the power armor dials at 12:04
Thats because they are standard m16/m4 mags.. The point of that design was so if you run out of ammo belts you can use mags given by others or taken off bodies..
Probably already been said here, but the thing that gets me is if you sit through the whole intro to the game, there's a scene where you have a soldier clearly holding what looks to be a galil or similar pattern AR, which never makes its way into the game. Part of me wonders if that was supposed to be an option at one point and it just got scrapped in favor of the meh weapons they ended up using.
After all these years after release I still genuinely do not understand how this abomination ended up in the game , someone straight up looked at that and said "yeah this shit good , ship it" like I wasn't the ugliest fucking thing ever. But I guess you could say that for almost every gun design in the game.
Apparently it was meant to be called "power armor rifle", chambered in .50, and would coexist alongside the regular R91. It does answer some questions tho.
I do wonder if the assault rifle was designed as a light weapon for power armor troops. That is the ONLY way I could see it being viable. Especially if it was designed to be cumbersome for those not in power armor.
I think they built the whole game around the idea people would be playing in power armor (since they give it to you right away) and had to design bulky guns in order to accommodate these huge suits
That would still be dumb... Like oh youre using the heaviest armor available? Here let us make you a weapon thats just as heavy for double the battlefield fatigue and misery..
@@demonjmh exactly. Why make a completely new gun for it? Just use the already existing weapons in the current US inventory. For example. If power armor were to be invented and issued right away today, the weakest weapon they'd be issued is an M249. The only difference is that they'd replace the pistol grip with something slightly longer and thicker so it fits the PA manipulators better, while still being useable by regular infantry. Something that costs 10 bucks and you just shove it upside the grip.
@@georgeousthegorgeous that's why I said replace or add an attachment for the pistol grip. Rather than spending a several hundred million more to create a brand new weapon only for power armor, just spend 1 million to create longer and thicker grips for a gun you already have in circulation for power armor units to hold better but still be useable by general infantry.
In the new Fallout TV show, the assault rifle has been scaled up so it looks like ONLY power armor troops can carry it properly. So it may have been swapped back to .50 for the show.
What’s even more egregious about the FO4 Assault Rifle is that the literal end-point of infantry-fielded machine guns is the first weapon you pick up after finding the set of power armor. The Mini-Gun was purpose built to mollify issues in air-cooled barrel systems; you don’t need to change barrels as often if you have more than one barrel shooting rounds.
I can remember when I found this gun in Fallout 4. My legit first reaction was that it has to be some kind of chemical flamethrower, then when it said "assault rifle" I could only laugh. Just yikes... Fallout 4 is what you get when your guns are designed by people who know absolutely nothing about guns. A lot of the baffling design choices seem to revolve around the gunsmithing. Every gun needed to be a family of potential designs, and as a result, every gun is a hot mess.
They just need to make a Fallout game in Miami and give you a shitload of "modern" guns like UZIs and MACs, guns by H&K and I personally want them to give us a good looking and better shooting Desert Eagle Oh, and also cosmetic upgrades for guns. Engravings give no tactical advantage, but we would all prefer a Ranger Sequoia to a regular Sniper Revolver
It's clear that nobody working at Bethesda has any idea how firearms actually work. It blows my mind that someone looked at this thing before release and thought "yeah that looks cool"
The 2 AR mods you showed the NV service rifle and SREP mods I remember there was a patch that made the 2 mods work together. Like you could actually mix and match custom parts from both mods it was pretty cool.
I downloaded Service Rifles of the Commonwealth and never looked back. The animations, design, custom reload, abs attention to detail of that mod are breathtaking. And the All-American and Survivalist's Rifle might be my favorite guns in any video game ever.
I love Dak’s remesh of it. Doesn’t completely remove the weapon, just changes its character from abomination deserving of eternal torment and ridicule to a fitting light machine gun
"They could have used the Service Rifle"- Or the R91. Goofy lore aside, that gun was fine. And they did use the M2... in Fallout 76. They also threw in the MG42 for good measure.
The service rifle paired with the mod that replaces the laser musket with the service rifle in the minute men is my favorite mod combo for fallout 4. I always run those 2
I downloaded the AKM mod to replace the “Assault Rifle” in Fallout 4. Using the Nuka World DLC option in the installation menu, it correctly chambers the AKM in 7.62x39. Without, it would default to 5.56, which is nasty. It can be crafted at a chem station using normal scrap items and an “Assault Rifle.” Okay, it doesn’t replace it, but at least we use the gun to make a better gun. Good components shouldn’t be wasted. The mods to the AKM include .a selector for Semi-Auto or Full Auto .scopes and sights (WHY WOULD YOU?! KALASHNIKOV GET ANGRY IN GRAVE! Gun is fine!) .different stocks including the folding paratrooper version (which reduces the weight considerably) .end barrel attachments like a bayonet (can also be crafted at the Chem station) And like some other weapon mods I have, the gun has a damage multiplier for mid to late game usage.
@GreenTea💚 To be fair, the Vickers is one of the best weapons of all time. STILL being used in modern warfare, by modern, well funded armies. It can be fired longer than any other weapon, and during testing to see how long? They ran out of ammo.
Fallout 4 Assault Rifle Hate Gang for Life. This massive eyesore of a blimp disguised as the 5.56 launcher in this game has disgusted me since I first laid eyes upon it. I've always been confused why the Combat Rifle shot a pistol caliber, ruining the Submachine Gun and the upgraded Pipe Gun, while this abomination stole one of the only AR calibers.
To be fair, it fits the AR Role well when being used by a soldier in Power Armor, where it's large size and weight are a necessity. I believe Bethesda specifically designed it with PA in mind.
New Vegas had the M4A1 and M16A2, don’t see why Bethesda insists on sticking to a weird steampunk 50s aesthetic instead of the retro-modern mixed aesthetic all the other games had. It’s why NV felt good, because it seemed like an actual word where technology rapidly changed after the 60s, with a lot of similarity to the real world but also old/futuristic stuff. Bethesda Fallouts just feel like a different reality, where simple gun design never existed.

If they had designed the rifle better, fit it to scale with power armour, and chamber it in 50 cal or bigger, it wouldn't be the worst replacement for the gatling gun. This way you could make the sights work better for an aa role if you chamber it to a higher caliber.
I'd like to see the assault rifle used as a mounted gun you can assign guards to at settlements, like a homemade gatling gun similar to the design of the artillery
There's only one weapon I hate just like the assault rifle: the minigun. In classic Fallouts (not New Vegas and F3, I'm talking about F1 and F2), both the minigun and the gatling laser were a guaranteed way to one shot most enemies except for bosses like Lieutenant and the Master. On Fallout 4, both are underpowered and useless, all because Bethesda had to put it right after the beginning just to "look kewl". And the gatling laser using precious fusion cores as ammo is unacceptable.
This thing would be perfect as a unique LMG you find in a boston museum about like, "the heroical 1918 invasion of Cuba, where our brave volunteers liberated the cuban people from the grips of their overlords" or something crazy like that
Yeah. If the fallout 4 assault rifle was a one of a kind unique weapon with an outlandish but plausible backstory, I would've been fine with it. Like your example of Cuban militias making it out of chopped up guns and garbage. Or my version where it was made by a gunner armorer while high on every available chem and OD'd after finishing it. But its not. It constantly spawns on gunners and loot containers, and is implied to have even been adopted as a standard issue weapon of a US commonwealth.
I think they should've brought back the Chinese assault rifle and the fallout 3 assault rifle and made the fallout 4 assault rifle into a .50 caliber machine gun for heavy classes. I'd hate to see them scrap a weapon as there's very little weapon variety to begin with
Yeah thats a red flag already. Actually the leaked trailer shows a lot of Red Flag. Its overall aesthetic borrowing more from recent Fallout games is a red flag. It reminds me of that failed Halo TV show.
I can tell you what happened. They thought mommies wouldnt like seeing their tommies playing with a scary military looking gun. So they made all the guns look like toys, one of them even winds up like a jack in the box.
The reason the guns are so bad is likely because videogame companies have to get permission from big weapon companies in order to use those weapons? Even if thats the case you can still make fictional weapons weapons that look nice and feel real.
The thing is there's ways around the permission by naming the weapon something else or as a variant that looks just like the weapon but under a different name.
Cool gun Facts and Shitting on Probably the Fugliest gun in the Fallout Games. edit: every second of this vid is making me Want to go Commit going to the Glowing sea Naked
Somebody made an LMG mod with a replacer for the vanilla AR, the MG69. It's a fictional gun, but it encapsulates what the AR should have been at launch and takes inspiration from various firearms in that category.
Make it take belts or much larger stick mags, animate the maxim style bolt, and chamber it in something large, and it could be an awesome automatic rifle designed for power armor use.
Honestly, Bethesda should've taken the design of the AR and stuck it on a tripod, thrown it in settlement defense, and used it as a turret in the build menu. Service Rifle and SREP Redux w/ M203 are my go-to assault rifle replacements. I use both at the same time. Service Rifle for the Minutemen and SREP for myself.
The Fallout amazon series showed the regular assault rifle from 3 and NV, and they also show the fallout 4 assault rifle used only by the brotherhood of steel, so I think the fallout 4 assault rifle is the brotherhoods attempt pf trying to make their own mass produced assault rifle.
Something I find funny is that the assault rifle was so disliked that in the first major dlc for fallout 4 they added a combat rifle which had a legendary perk making it use 5.56 I see reason to add that to a weapon unless they knew the assault rifle was disliked
Give us AR15s, AK47s, PKMs, Browning50, MaDuce, browning Hi- power, RPGs, 1911 in 45acp, single action army, model 29, BFR4570, Marlin, Henry and Winchester lever rifles, M1 Garand rifles, BARs, Thompson subguns, Grease guns, H&K MP5, H&K USP 9mm/45T. Barret M82A1 50BMG semiautomatic rifle and 40mm grenade launchers. You don't need many more guns to make a fun game.
Awesome video as always, Brandy. Despite Bethesda's laziness take on this design,, anybody who defends it as a plausible pre-war weapon, should go and play other games. Even in post-apocalyptic fantasy games there should be a bit of practicality and basic logic of how machines work, i.e. weapons. On the other hands, I would have expect this abomination design as a post-war, last-ditch type of gun or any other excuse, that was created from various machine and old weapon parts to fit the needs for the current time of Fallout's universe. But label it as a "proper" assault rifle/machine gun that was used pre-war? I want to know what kind of drugs took the guy who designed this shit...
Nah man. Last ditch guns are designed to be as military grade as possible. Cheap, fast to produce, and barely passes standard. The "assault rifle" barely passes standard alright. But the bulkiness of it and the nonsense additions like a hybrid air and water cooling system as well as levers, handles, handguards and grips that aren't essential makes it expensive and time consuming to manufacture. TL;DR The assault rifle fails as a last ditch weapon.
In defense of the charging handle thing.... It could just be open bolt with a last round hold open. On an empty mag it locks, you jam a new mag in, and you squeeze the trigger no racking the bolt required. That also explains why it's so easy to make it full auto as open bolt semis are notoriously easy to convert to full auto with simple hand tools and just enough knowledge to be dangerous. You should try Modern Firearms! Tons of ARs, AKs, FALs, G36, and other assault rifle goodies plus pistols. Also has an M2 50 cal, Flak 88mm, and better Gatling guns. It's the only weapons mod I use.
I love the vibe of it if I'm being honest. It's a perfectly off-kilter retro-techno-futurist look, that it shares with the 10mm. Much better and more interesting than, say, the "combat rifle"
I personally use the Service Rifle mod, as it fits the aesthetic best (in my opinion) and it's a nice nod to my all-time favorite Fallout game. And actually, there is a Browning M2 machine gun on the Nexus, but it is pretty basic, with limited modifications and a "Never Ending" perk that's just the modder's sneaky way of not having to bother with a custom reload animation. There is another heavy MG / autocannon mod though that offers a nicely moddable platform with different calibers, a large bayonet and even a ballistic shield like you would find on a vehicle-mounted heavy MG. I don't know the mod's name, but I do know that one of the variants of the weapon that is sometimes carried by Gunners or Super Mutants is called "Shrike" maybe that helps.
For the muzzle brake the only real life example I could really think of that looks anywhere close to that monstrosity is the arrowhead muzzle brake from the Barrett m82
Considering that Bethesda relabeled the gun into fake assault rifle, I'd suggest alternate theory. They wanted a gun for PA(Power Armor), right? But not a heavy weapons. We also know, thanks to text on suppressor, that it's supposed to have .50 version which had suppressor intended for it so likely subsonic 12,7mm. Does it sound familiar? What if this "assault rifle" was intended as PA only armament that is a hybrid of ideas of MG-131 and ASh-12? Ammo is subsonic .50 with case length of .308, very heavy round to penetrate armor with low velocity. Optionally with HE version to compensate too. And it uses side mounted magazine because arms of early PA weren't dexterous enough for normal magazines or belts. Obviously it has no connection to assault rifles of Fallout, be they AR-15, G3 or AK based.
It's weird that they didn't use the R91 assault rifle from Fallout 3 which was stated in that game to be the standard rifle of the US armed forces before the Great War and was slowly being replaced by handheld laser weapons.

The barrel is the same as other service rifle barrels, however, the heat shield is the only thing different, which allows space for the attachment points for the grenade launcher to fit unimpeded : ) So technically it could be called the "grenadier heat shield". Context: I carried this rifle in combat in the USMC.
Thanks for your service to our country 🇺🇸❤
Little unknown detail, that heatshield was designed for the M16A1, that had triangular handguards which split into left and right.
When the M16A2 was designed (By the USMC) the handguards were changed to the rounded style with an upper and lower piece, it also received a slot in the barrel, so you could remove the lower handguard and attach the M203 directly to the barrel.
However due to the availability of the Cheese grater handguards most grenadier M16A2s had them, but nowadays with the M16A4 and the M4/M4A1 the M203 gets mounted to the slot in the barrel, with the lower handguard removed.

When I first played Fallout 4, I was around 14, knowing nothing about guns. But when I killed a Gunner Captain who held this so called "Assault Rifle", I was weirded out with the thing. @@generic_tough_guy.4830 True, I forgot about the bullpup stuff when typing this comment.

Sadly it ain't like it, son. This thing looks like a Lewis Gun had sex with an MG 32
Hell, they were probably using laser rifles which we see in the intro to FO4, so those definitely broke down and had to be replaced with conventional weapons.
The M60, M249, and M240 also fit in the other half. Why don't they add some real machine guns, they could have added the RPD in Nuka World as well.

You can somewhat make the RPD in Nuka World with mods for the Handmade Rifle. Along with the RPK.
there is another difference between the ASSault rifle and the mag feed of the M249 SAW.

@@DJWeapon8 but it still makes some sense. The fingers on power armour are very big so grip and trigger area must be much bigger.

Every gun needed to be a family of potential designs, and as a result, every gun is a hot mess.
even if you call it a machine gun and make it .50 caliber it doesn't change the fact that it looks like shit
I appreciate you going over the old cooling methods.
Bethesda needs to hire some actual gun experts for Fallout 5.
They just need to make a Fallout game in Miami and give you a shitload of "modern" guns like UZIs and MACs, guns by H&K and I personally want them to give us a good looking and better shooting Desert Eagle
Oh, and also cosmetic upgrades for guns.
I like how there was way much more options like the chinese assault rifle or the r91 but instead they went with this.
The 2 AR mods you showed the NV service rifle and SREP mods I remember there was a patch that made the 2 mods work together. Like you could actually mix and match custom parts from both mods it was pretty cool.
The assault rifle, even the naming of it, is exactly what you’d get from someone designing guns who knows nothing about guns.
I downloaded Service Rifles of the Commonwealth and never looked back. The animations, design, custom reload, abs attention to detail of that mod are breathtaking. And the All-American and Survivalist's Rifle might be my favorite guns in any video game ever.

There’s a mod called RU556 which I like quite a bit. It doesn’t replace the assault rifle but it uses the assault rifle as an ingredient to craft it.
The mods to the AKM include
.a selector for Semi-Auto or Full Auto
.scopes and sights (WHY WOULD YOU?! KALASHNIKOV GET ANGRY IN GRAVE! Gun is fine!)
.different stocks including the folding paratrooper version (which reduces the weight considerably)
.end barrel attachments like a bayonet (can also be crafted at the Chem station)
And like some other weapon mods I have, the gun has a damage multiplier for mid to late game usage.

I believe Bethesda specifically designed it with PA in mind.
That's actually genius, if they renamed it something like "Power Armor Rifle" designed specifically for power armor use.

The "assault rifle" barely passes standard alright. But the bulkiness of it and the nonsense additions like a hybrid air and water cooling system as well as levers, handles, handguards and grips that aren't essential makes it expensive and time consuming to manufacture.
TL;DR
The assault rifle fails as a last ditch weapon.
Bruh. The way you looked back and forth to Paladin Dance, and then shot his face, threw me off. I sub.
First
nice
And here it is getting stared in the Fallout TV show... oof
Funny how the reanimation mod changes the vibe of this thing
For the muzzle brake the only real life example I could really think of that looks anywhere close to that monstrosity is the arrowhead muzzle brake from the Barrett m82
Brandy sounds like a sultry super mutant radio voice and I need him to be in the next game
