So I don't know if you also noticed. But in the Live action trailer for Fallout 4, they do show the Sole Survivor with an M14 with a wrap around the front. Yet they couldn't even bother to add it to the game.
Oh God the wanderer trailer? I fucking loved that trailer cause it looked awesome my day was fucking ruined when I found out there was no m14 to be found...

Yeah I mean I like the way it works but its just so, god damn displeasing to look at to where I don't care even if it gives me perfect aim, I ain't fucking putting it on my damn gun
It's ugly, it's bulky and it doesn't fit any weapon at all. Hell, I made this comment years ago on a different video and channel, so I'm glad we all agree it looks bad!
I can kind of see it fitting the Institute Rifle, and just barely the laser rifle but yeah still a huge yeesh. I'm not even sure the technology on it makes sense artwise, in the Fallout universe they never figured out conductors like we did, thus no mobile phones, flat screen tvs, nor nice little computers. Almost feel like it should look worse & bigger for having the tagging functionality.
As for the BAR in .308/7.62x51 instead of 30-06, it's a fairly easy conversion. This was done en-mass to many WW2 era 30-06 weapons when NATO adopted the 7.62x51. The Garand, Browning 1919, etc... were often converted to use the .308 type cartridge, so it's definitely possible for that to have been done with BARs as well.
@@judsongaiden9878 I personally HAVE an Israeli 1919 rechambered for 7.62x51. That's what inspired my comment. But converting bolt actions is particularly simple. Minimal feed system adjustments needed.
Might be because the Bethesda version looks like a teenager welded it together in a garage for a high school project. Seriously. The gun has obvious and massive weld-lines.
I think the Combat Rifle was born out of a weird history. I think the Combat Shotgun was made first, as a “redesign” of the Fallout 3 Combat Shotgun, “fixing” it by moving the drum back to a more reasonable spot. Then, without a combat rifle and no care to add a unique one, they just gave the Combat Shotgun a .45 rechamber with some different magazines and called it a day.
@@TheSimmr001 Interestingly, the unique effect that gives that one special combat rifle a 5.56mm chambering from the Far Harbor DLC is called "M4 Carbine"
I think you've got it. Which is kinda strange mentality to have about your weapon designs considering combat was a much bigger part of the game in Fallout 4 to past fallouts.
I knew the combat rifle was cursed, but the fact it spits out 10mm casings for the default .45 chambering while the magazine shows the .308 cartridges during reload is next level. Makes me wonder what horrible details I've never noticed on the combat shotgun.
Nah, cause even if the combat rifle can be chambered in 308, it still wouldn't work because the bullets shown in the reload are too big, those are 30-06 bullets.
The "BAR" in the dead money dlc might (and I say "MIGHT" very loosely) actually be a colt Monitor which was a police weapon loosely based on the BAR and considering the existence of the police pistol in the same dlc (which is loosely based on the .38 special revolver) maybe the sierra madre Security decided to go for a 1930s aesthetic in terms of weapon equipment (although the security uniform would still be an eyesore if they were going with that aesthetic)
To be fair, at least it was recognizable enough to see that they were going for a BAR. My only major gripe with the BAR and the Battle Rifle/This Machine (M1 Garand) use .308 rounds when they should be using .30-06 rounds.
@@nicholascauton9648tbf it probably wouldn't have made sense to make them shoot their own rounds when both don't don't really have a reason to gameplay-wise
The ones in Sierra Madre are almost certainly Colt Monitors, a slight rebuild and update on the BAR in the 50’s to try and capture last bits of sales. Lighter, with a pistol grip, and short barrel, it was made for police forces and security. Makes sense that the Sierra madre casino security would have them
Wasn’t the Monitor made in the 20s and 30s? I thought I read somewhere that it was used by one of the men that killed Bonnie and Clyde but I could be wrong.
The added touch of the losing karma sound playing each time you add to the cringe counter is a really nice detail. It reminds me of how low Bethesda's gun design karma is.
Your remark about the Sierra Madre having bargain bin automatic rifles is actually pretty on point, considering how much they skimmed off from the Villa's budget in lore.
Having been an armorer for the us army, national guard units keep around old gear, they are usually the last to get new stuff, we swapped over to the m17, but most national guard units still have m9s in the invasion of Iraq tank crew men were still issued m3 grease guns, it’s not unreasonable for fallout’s national guard units in Boston to have kept around the bar, especially when in certain areas their tech progressed in certain areas but lack in others, if they are still using a g3 variation in 2077 when the bombs dropped who’s to say they didn’t faze out the bar until much later as well? Keeping it in the hands of national guard
I would've been fine with this. Natty G's still using old but reliable stuff due to issues with logistics. F3 was fine in this regard with the prevalence of FAL/G3 hybrids chambered in 5.56x45mm. But then came F4 and for some reason the Commonwealth National Guard got sets of new T-60 power armor because "rool ov kewl" in the prewar prologue, and the prevalence of pipe weapons in master locked military safes inside 200+ year old sealed bunkers, and the asinine "standard issue" weapons that would've been outdated at the end of WWII. Really. T-60 should've been a Brotherhood of Steel exclusive power armor. Made as replacement upgrades for aging T-45s they had. While the prewar prologue National Guard should've been using T-45 instead. Pipe weapons should be removed from any prewar military installation loot tables. And conventional ballistic firearm design (not including laser, plasma, cryo, and the like) should be completely scrapped and replaced with realistic designs. There'd be 2 prevailing design philosophies. Prewar and postwar. Prewar is basically carbon copies of ours. With some upgrades and additions to our current ones to portray 2070's weapons. Really old prewar weapons for example would be Korean to WWI weapons. Modern 2070's prewar weapons would be really rugged, metal reinforced M16s with ACOGs or Mk19's with carry handles for power armor. Postwar would be prewar weapons redesigned to be as easy to manufacture in the post apocalypse but still be reliable and useable as possible. An example would be an M16 with simply made wood furniture, no dust cover, no T-handle, no carry handle, no forward assist, simple notch and post sights, straight magazines, semi automatic by default, and a long screw on the bolt to act as the charging handle.
I interpreted the Combat Rifle as an older gun that was chambered for .45 and issued to the police departments and national guard depots to violently repress Protests and Resource Riots.
this "gun" the combat rifle would compare to the NG having smooth bore brown bess rifles on storrage in case of emergency. the "combat rifle" is by all means obsolete even by fallout timeline standard as the divergens happens in the late 1950´es when something like the FN-Fal, the CETME-L, the AKM, the G3, and even the first incarnations of the M16 does exist, other games in the fallout series especially prior to fallout 3 has more "modern" assault rifles SMG´s MG´s in their arsenals. even in fallout 2 they have P90 PDW´s. the MP5-sd exist in fallout tactics, the G3 in 5.56x45 exist in fallout 3, the XM-117e2 exist in New Vegas.
My suspicion is that they originally intended to recreate the R-93 (G-3) in FO4, but due to some combination of development crunch, legal concerns over the similarity to a real world firearm, and meddling theory of "game balance", the team had to drop it, and cludged together the combat rifle late in the game. I wouldn't be surprised if it came down to a spreadsheet with slots for different level ranges and enemy groups, where they had to have something to plug into each cell. That would also explain the monstrosity that is the 'assault rifle', i.e. "we need a mid-level full auto by default gun that looks appropriately sized for super mutants. But we don't want to call it an MG because that has certain connotations for damage/ammo..." Terrible reasoning, but very much standard game dev.
I really liked the Assault Rifle and Chinese Assault Rifle in Fallout 3. Never realized the R93 was based off the G3, that makes me like it even more tbh.
Honestly with designs like Combat Armor I’d think that rifles like Battle Rifles would come back into fashion, similar to how higher caliber rifles are making a comeback due to body armor. R91 is Goat, one of the better rifles in Bethesda’s Fallout
For most combat infantry full-auto is as much of a liability as it is a benefit. You can beat armor a couple different ways: velocity, mass or explosives. IRL I think the future leans towards a high velocity, low recoil round in like a 3 round burst configuration.
@@etanb1 I'm always happy when somebody gets the reference. The nice thing about burst fire guns is that they're almost always select-fire so if you prefer you can shoot semi-auto. A gun I like in particular is the Russian AN-94 with its super high cyclic rate 2 round burst.
I'm sorry but I have to vehemently disagree with you on the Assault Refile, you're just wrong. It is not just the worst weapon in all of Fallout, it is the worst weapon in all of gaming. That thing is an abomination that should have been strangled at birth and the artist asked just wtf he was smoking when he created it? By comparison, the Combat Rifle is a Super Model.
The assault rifle was designed to have something that would look good while wearing power armor. Thankfully, if you install an assault rifle mod like the G3, HOWA, or Chinese assault rifle, most gunners will carry those instead, and the assault rifle (which I took a mod to rename “machine gun” and rightfully so, it’s modeled after the Lewis Gun) becomes a much more rare appearance. Even Kellogg carries an mod-supplemented AR in his memory cutscene. In mine he entered the room with a HOWA rifle. Was stoked, he looked much cooler carrying something practical.
Fun Fact during the early years of the US involvement in WWII there a debate within the US Arsenal to make the BAR the standard battle rifle for US forces. The plan was to convert them to Semiauto which would allow them to reduce the weight of the rifle. That would make it light enough to be used for riflemen. But the US was already fielding M1 Garands at the time and they felt that served the role.
Making it semi-auto only doesn't really save any weight, in fact it might make the gun slightly heavier. The reason they kept the M1 instead of adopting the BAR is because the BAR was almost 50% heavier (13.75 lbs vs 9.5 lbs)
That edit of the two guns mashed together really got me. At first I thought it was an irl replica or something lol I personally use Dak's Combat Rifle Overhaul not only making it look a bit better but also chambers it to the much more fitting 5.56. Definitely a must have for people who want to improve the Combat Rifle rather than replace it
I don't know why (maybe because i'm ppsh fan), but i, for some reason really like combat rifle (the only thing i hate is the fucking caliber, like wtf?!).
I have some nice attachments from the attachments pack and found an incendiary one so made it look a bit better and gave it to my companion. It's been really good for them. I called it the Boston Cremater. 😅
It would've made more sense lore-wise if the standard issue combat rifle for the US military was the M14. It's an American design, it shoots 7.62/.308, it's highly customizable, and it's what the US picked in real life over the G3 & FAL rifles. Plus, you could potentially use a workbench to make into a squad automatic weapon by attaching a bipod + drum magazine and making it automatic - or convert it to 5.56 and effectively turn it into a Mini-14.
BAR is more lore friendly because in alternate history of fallout ythey didn't have time to develop new weapons because they were quick to drop the atomic bombs. And all weapons in Fallout 4 looks primitive what post apocalyptic world deserves. Easy to make, easy to maintain, easy to repair and guns can eat shitty ammo. Firearms from WWI, WWII, revolvers, lever actions perfectly fits in the game.
@@Акула-б3х That's not really true. 132 years past between WW2 and the bomb dropping in the Fallout Universe. Fallout would have seen similar weapons to ours being developed till roughly the 2000's when in the Fallout Universe they were making headway with laser weapons technology. Also as far as "cannon" games no real mentions of American conflict from WW2 till the Cino-American war is rarely mentioned meaning there could have been peace for 100 years meaning weapons development would have been much slower.
@@brothatscrazy3418I think the Cold War era guns would be the perfect middle ground for Fallout. Fun fact: the R91 was adopted by the US Army in 2075 as the primary assault rifle due to rampant materials shortages at the tag end of the War, displacing the long-serving M16 and its variants. Being a cheaper, stamped-steel and wood-furnished version of a G3A3, it was chosen purely for cost-effectiveness as supplies of both steel and the oil for plastics dwindled.
You seem to have forgotten about the single 556 combat rifle that can be found in the far Harbor DLC the issue is it technically fires 556 which is what the model seems to be showing, but it actually deals less damage than the 45 version due to a bug

Previous Fallout games have had perfect combat rifle equivalents, yet Bethesda still decided to add this goofy thing into the game. I'm sick of Bethesda thinking Fallout is "1950s with retrofuture aesthetic", it's the future with a 1950s retro aesthetic. Completely different thing. Hopefully in the next Fallout we go back to New Vegas style modern guns modified to fit the Fallout aesthetic.
Not to be rude but you're incorrect. Bethesda actually has the right idea here in FO4. I mean for gods sake the TRANSISTOR was never invented in the original Fallout games. It isn't just "the future with a 1950s retroaethestic", even the first games were "1950s with future aesthetic".

It doesn't, it looks ridiculous and doesn't blend with the original games at all.
@@xX_Pokeman_Xx The original theming of Fallout was 50's retrofuturism with a few mixes of other themes like 80's cyberpunk and 90's gothic. Bethesda went futuristic but full on 50's aaesthetic. The Jetsons cartoon is a good example of retrofuturism designs.
@@Boopity7739 But it doesn't? Like, yeah, okay, the laser musket kind of fits your description, but that's also made of actual junk and is the pipe equivalent for laser weapons. Easily manufactured with random ass parts you have laying around, in tune with survivors living in a world where properly manufactured weapons is slowly becoming a luxury. I suppose there's also the railroad but their signature weapon has also shown up in other games so it's not exactly a fair criticism to say that they're at fault for making the game look like a steampunk fantasy. I mean, if anything, the Valve Regional Headquarters should immediately disprove your claims. That thing looks like a building that came out of the Jetsons.
6:13 I will say that Bethesda I think admitted they didn't want ro litter the world with high damage .308 rifles at low level, but didn't want to make the gun endgame only, so the .45 was added after.
I'd like to think that the Combat Rifle was only for the national guard of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that sacrificed modernity for versatility and ease of manufacture (although we really don't see a small arms factory in FO4). Perhaps the designers had a PPSH-41 and a BAR in their reference collection and thought to just mash them together. This would explain why it looks really simple and mashup of PPSH-41 (for the simplicity and ease of manufacture) and the BAR M1918A2 (for the .30 caliber round and sustained fire capability). More can be manufactured in a short time frame, so it kind of makes sense to me. So while the national guard had that, the actual military had the R91 and was in the process of adopting the Laser Rifle on a wider scale. Although the counter to this explanation would be, "The army should have just passed down the older R91's to the national guard" and I agree with that since it would ease tensions on the manufacturing part, but I guess Bethesda never thought about that. I still don't like the combat rifle and all the vanilla mods, but I like to create my own lore to sort of justify it, but this doesn't always work out (i.e. the FO4 Assault Rifle). What do you guys think about my explanation?
I like to think that the Assuslt rifle was suppose to only be used by power armor units. That and I think I've heard somewhere that it was originally going to be a heavy machine gun.
Explanation is fine, design is still boring and weird? I say this as someone who kinda likes it, if they wanted a cool Pistol Carbine they could have made something cooler
Something that I’d be personally interested in is seeing you break down the weapons from classic Fallout, like the colt rangemaster hunting rifle or the AK-112 Assault rifle. Nostalgia leaves me really liking their designs, and I’m interested in seeing a more critical perspective on them
I´ve been using the G3 Battlerifle mod and the Assault Rifle Replacer for it, for a while now and i can fully recomment it to anyone who wants a propper looking Assault Rifle ingame.
Yeah, making it look like a g3 was definitely the sanest option here. …meanwhile, the “assault rifle” should’ve taken inspiration from the Stoner 63 cause that’s a customizable machine gun that can look like an AR and have belt feed or a fully invertable receiver (in the sense you can make it look like a Bren! I don’t know why, but you can). I will die on this hill.
That would be a way better idea for an AR. a beltfed stoner would look amazing while still technically being an assault rifle. Also the real Stoner had an upside down magwelk config. was because it was way better shooting prone with it
I genuinely think modders are the real people pushing forward the cutting edge of game design. There are so many mods in fallout 4 alone, that bring such an insanely high level of quality that you genuinely can't find in any game out right now. From 3d modeling, animation, sound design - Even fucking UI design. These modders are actually so ahead of the game, and deserve so much more for their work.
It's amazing to me how one person can produce something of such a high quality, just out of shear love for the game. While a team of 100's of people can barely produce something with half of the quality.
@Enthusiastic Aizawa all game companies in southeast Asia have all the same issues and deadlines to meet because they are also businesses, except they don't suck.
Bethesda should’ve kept the guns from Fallout 3 and made some new weird guns that were made to only be used with power armor. If you’re wearing big gloves/gauntlets you need a special gun. It’s why they had to do for the movie Robocop.
Power armor is the exact reason the assault rifle is the way it is. That and the art team were obviously not firearm people so they just mixed and matched some parts.
I put it down to laziness, lack of attention to detail, lack of knowledge of firearms, and sense a 'don't GAF, just get it done and out' vibe from Bethesda regarding this 'rifle'. I like what modders have done with it, but it would have been 'so much better' if Bethesda had just paid attention and time to make a decent 'rifle' and animations out of the gate. But 'Bethesda: It Just Works' does what it do, and here we are. Thanks for the vid, IYBBB!
With the "assault rifle" at least they could say they were design choices, terrible ones, but still deliberate. The combat rifle is literally not finished.
I've been using a R91 mod (different to the one shown) for years now. You can chamber it in 5.56 or .308 and add some special effect to it too like plasma to turn enemies to goo (good source of nuclear material). You can also do an inbuilt suppressor barrel on the one from the mod I use. It's name is R91 Standalone Assault Rifle by FF7CloudStrife on the Nexus. I actually forgot the vanilla combat rifle was a thing because I've not used it in so long. I agree that it's an abomination.
"Aren't Lore Friendly" The Aimpoint compM4 sure as shit ain't lore-friendly. It uses both LEDs and circuit-boards, technologies which very explicitly do not exist in the fallout universe.
The original live action fallout 4 trailer showed the main character using a M14/M1A. So I was excited to see it in game, but could you imagine my disappointment when we were given the "Combat" Rifle instead 😮💨
Tbh a .308 BAR doesn't even sound too weird, they've been converted to quite a few calibers over the years by other countries. Sounds like something that could have (and surprisingly didn't) come about during the Cold War/Vietnam in our timeline.
2:53 funny enough, Russia’s allied with America in Fallout’s pre-war lore. Basically, both hate China above all else, so they allied. Also, Russia is less communist in general in Fallout’s lore.
Honestly tho, the choice to us 1940s01950s weapons in fallout four makes a lot of sense when you compare the post war history to our real history. Post ww2, many Military surplus weapons such as the BAR and Thomson were adopted by police and prisons for riot control, which was just as big of an issue in our world as it was the fallout universe. We know Boston was being used to ship weapons and military surplus to the rest of the US for riot control (hence the absurd amount of power armor), so it'd make sense that we'd find the army's older weapons. It would have made sense if service rifles were in the game, but only spawned in form military installations. Side note, i think the 10 mil is actually pretty close to the og in size-
I actually like the combat rifle. Looks like a nice civilian semi-auto like the Remington Model 8, but with the atompunk style of Fallout. I did install a mod that gives it a pistol grip and changes the mag depending on the ammo you use for it though. Looks like a nice PCC that can have a couple different stocks or just no stock as opposed to the weird cut off stock. Definitely wouldn’t use a replacer on it imo. That and the Rangemaster add a lot of variety and introduces the category of civilian/police market rifles into the game.
I have a PTR 91 and I have to say, the one with green furniture looks like its straight out of my collection. Either the mod maker has one or is absolutely dedicated to research!
While I agree with the BAR, and the G3 is cool, I'd say the FAL could be a substitute for it, specifically using the DSA58 OSW mod since you can make it look like a classic cold war FAL (or even the Israeli version, the IMI Romat or the British L1A1) and because when America was doing trials to replace the M1 the FAL (dubbed the T48) and the M14 (then called the T44) were both being tested
The problem is that the developers of Fallout have barely any firearms knowledge and probably didn't know this. In the Fallout 3 canon it's established that the US uses the R91 as it's ballistic service rifle and the R91 is clearly a CETME/HK roller delayed blowback family rifle. On top of that they chambered the R91 in 5.56 which means that the US, instead of adopting the homegrown AR-15, actually use a HK33/CETME-L style of rifle. It would have made much more sense for them to go with the alternate universe "what if the FAL won" scenario but they didn't.
The more I look at Fallout 4 the more I feel like it was an in house tech demo that got "polished" for release. Almost all of the new designs have an early concept art feel. Not just the weapons, the tanks and trains feel the same. Lots of clipping and unpolished ideas that early iterations tend to have. The vanilla modding system feels like all the barrel and receiver options are just there to show that the menu works. Like they were planning to add more options with different models or different gameplay effects but just didn't have time. They also double as a band aid solution for the broken enemy scaling. The jetpack seems like an example of something that was added in last minute. Or maybe it was added earlier on but in their rush to polish the open world for release they just didn't have time to add more exploration options. The DLCs are still lackluster but they did have more options to get some use out of the jetpack. The story also has an unedited first draft feeling. The basic story beats might have worked if more thought was put into how it was strung together. The story is so flawed I don't know if that could actually be pulled off though. Especially with how poor Bethesda's writing is in other games. It just makes me really curious what happened behind the scenes. It seems like a lot of devs had good ideas but just didn't have time to implement them. Or were pulled away to work on whatever whim Todd had that day.
In all honesty, modern weapons (and let's be clear here, that means weapons with black, polymer furniture and 21st century optics) could easily exist in fallout, but would almost certainly be about as common as finding a mother load during a gold rush. After 200 years there'd be the guns that had been passed around and the polymer had degraded or broken from use and the guns that had just been discovered. The latter would be more and more rare with every passing year. The use and abuse many of these weapons would see would require constant maintenance and repairs. Wood furniture and simpler optics give the feel that it's been worked on since the great war and IMO make the game that slight bit more immersive. The post 2010 aftermarket parts on a lot of the gun mods drag me straight out of the wasteland and into call of duty.
In my opinion. Fallout having modern tacticool guns is lore friendly. After all, the world reached 2077 and has advanced combat robots like the sentrybots and assaultrons before the nuclear apocalypse occurred. If anything, the guns shown in the series aren't advanced enough to fit the level of technology available during 2077. *_That said._* There is still a ton of nuance in how guns should be presented in the series based on the lore and the time it is set in. Early Prewar, which is before 2060, would have all of the advanced guns with advanced optics and attachments. But these would be extremely rare in the game. Being turned into Unique Weapons that you only get after delving into a dangerous location that has been sealed for over 200 years. Late Poswar, which is after 2060 to 2077, would have these advanced guns start using other materials than polymer like aluminum or wood, and would have little to no optics or attachments. Some long range riflea having a magnified optic at best. This is due to the resource wars causing an increasing petroleum shortage that is now affecting the US. Low access to petroleum = low polymer production rate = low amounts of polymer gun furniture. In general, these guns would be more prevalent in the games. Especially when the game is set very early after the apocalypse. Where they are used as loot and set dressing when exploring prewar locations. Postwar guns would be guns made after 2077. They come in a variety of designs ranging from "better than nothing" improvised pipe guns that are single shot to revolvers at the most, simple but reliable bolt actions, to remanufactured derivatives of the advanced Prewar guns made using Postwar materials and tooling. Generally speaking, postwar guns would make up the vast majority of guns in the game. With the kind of designs that are prevalent being based on the tech level the game presents. For example: A game set in a tribal society just 30 years after the nukes where melee combat is the norm would have almost all of its guns be single shot pipe guns. A game where it is set inside a thriving postwar city 200 years after the nukes would have full auto M4s and Uzis with wooden furniture.
Bethesda knows absolutely nothing when it comes to firearms. They need a firearms expert to give advise in the next fallouts games design. I recommend the guy from forgotten weapons. Maybe then we will stop left handed weapons in Bethesda fallout games.
Any gunsmith will do. They just need a quick crash course on Fallout lore to understand what kind of gun *_makes sense_* in the game. • The nuclear apocalypse happening in 2077. • The resource wars creating a worldwide petroleum shortage. • The tech level and timeframe a game would be set in. Taking these into account, they can then not only effectively advise the art team on if the guns they're making would work and be combat effective, but also if it makes sense with the tech level in the game its going to be in.
another good fit for replacing the gun would be the FN FAL, cold era weapon, chambered in 7,62x51, battle rifle. Fits nicely into the lore actually, and it had widespread use around the world. And is still used in a lot of places, like brazil still uses the FAL to this day.
The FAL is also lore friendly, having been seen in Fallout 2. And since it was the Canadian service rifle for a good time, you could make lore for the weapon around the United States' annexation of Canada.
@@trentonb99 The FAL was not just Canadian service rifle, it was pretty much everyone's service rifle, almost all of the democratic countries used the FAL as a service rifle. That is why it is nicknamed the right arm of the free world.
They really just need a fucking weapons expert to make the guns look more realistic, doesn't mean they can't create new weapons, but some of the old weapons in Fallout 3 and NV look great, and are based on real weapons, I downloaded the weapons mods from Fallout 4: New Vegas, and been having some fun with the Cabine from NV, now it can be fully auto and is completely compatible with the weapon modding system.
From what little i know, the Combat Rifle in Fallout 4 is modeled after the OLD fallout game combat Rifles. No really it looked just like this. Still, After playing Fallout 3 and New Vegas it really does make you wonder Where all these guns came from. The only recognizable guns from those games in fallout 4 are the 10mm, the combat shotgun, and the handmade rifle. As for the ammo, Bethesda i guess just needed another 45. gun since Fallout 4 has SO FEW FREAKING GUNS because of the gun customization and "legendary system". I wonder if this is supposed to be Fallout version of the M14? Cus if you squint it KINDA looks like one.
I just got back into fallout and have to say the way you make content is amazing. Thanks for all the tips and mod recommendations! The stuff I've gotten downloaded cause of your videos is really making me love Fallout again
Your knowledge on gun parts, history, and engineering was a breath of fresh air amongst normal video game weapon related content on TH-cam. Thanks for posting, I definitely subscribed!
Just found your channel, and as much as I loved my time playing FO4, you're highlighting all the things I've had gripes about that has kept it from being a really really good game, immersion wise.
The problem with fallout is they take the Star Wars approach to weapon design where it’s just “let’s slap a bunch of shit together till it looks cool”. Except they forgot they Star Wars guns were intended to be magic lazer guns in an early sci-fi film set “a long time ago in a galaxy far far away”. Fallout is meant to be alternate history so if something makes no sense in our word there has to be a reason it makes sense in that one. Bethesda forgets that principle over and over again.
I like the design but it doesn't look like something the US army would use, if anything it looks soviet/chinese as said in the video, the only way it could be made by the US it would be as a cheap last ditch weapon given to civilians, it comes being semi auto, has common ammo for civilians, has a sawed off stock and it was totally made with the same machine as the combat shotgun to cut prices
The thing is. With how _Bethesda_ wrote _their_ lore, the US was the dominant superpower until the nukes hit in 2077. So the US having these odd and subpar performing last ditch weapons doesn't make sense.
@@DJWeapon8 knowing bethesda they probably just throw a random bs card, like the pre war magazine that explain how to make pipe guns that they made to explain why theres pipe guns on safes and dead pre war skeletons
I liked the full-auto combat rifle. I found one at like level 2 when I was exploring some 'high level' area and it carried me through the entire game, lol.
Bethesda could have used a few rifles. - FAL - G3 - AR-10A4 - M1A/M14 The AR-10A4 would have been my choice here. It's lightweight, modern and existed prior to the AR-15.
I really think Bethesda didn't add this guns in because they think they looked scary, and wanted something more friendly for those quirky new fans they wanted.
It's funny I totally understand and agree with most of your criticisms but this also reminded me I used to do this back in the day with MS paint and google images. I would rudimentarily crop pieces of 4 different guns together then try and recreate a basic sketch below the low level photoshopped monstrosity I had created. Almost took away a little hate I have for it after your breakdown haha
I never understood all the promotional material, the logos and even the signs had normal looking firearms, but most of the usable firearms looked like they were a complete afterthought.
The R91 is closer to thr HK33, the G3's little brother, but with the way Bethesda does receivers going from G33 to G3 in one gun would be the way to do it
Great content as always. Your videos really explain what we with less knowledge sort of intuitively know but can't place our finger on. G3 good choice. I like the idea of an M1 Garand or M14, classic look.
It really stings. I was using Wasteland Melody's Service Rifle for more than a hot minute to replace it as it felt fantastic, but after a while realized the damage numbers were nuclear on the thing - the .308 upgrade does about 55 base damage on the combat rifle while the SR was doing 105, and that's all before perks doubled that damage. Really wish we got automatic rifle weapons that weren't, well, the ones in the base game. Replacers have been sweet, but I end up staring at the damage numbers in FO4Edit & the Workbench at this point to make sure they don't ruin the tricky Jenga tower of balance that vanilla and mods have to hope they can be. I miss DT/DR so much T_T
It's not very hard to use FO4 edit to swap out the Combat Rifle for something better, Daks got a great simple tutorial on it. While I have mine replaced with the BAR mod in this video, another good replacement mod is the lore friendly 5.56 mod by jkruse05. It adds a R91-inspired rifle that's got good customization, and it throws in the New Vegas LMG as well. He's also got a mod that adds a pistol grip to the Combat Rifle which tones down the cursed factor on it, and it'll convert it to 5.56 as well. Rifles Rebirth by Skibidaa also has a few good replacements for it. There's a m14-inspired Rifle that fits the role good, though it does have a really weird chunky carry handle sight on it. Lastly, Wanaming0's FAL mod is perfect for the role. It can be as retro or modern as you want, and it's got a bunch of uniques in there too.
Personally I like the Skibadaa guns but I wanted no change to game balance. The solution was relatively simple though. I've gone through and replaced all the meshes and animations for the combat Rifle with Skibadaas assets It was worth learning to navigate the CK. As a bonus I put the compensator for Skibadaas Anti material Rifle on the 10mm pistol.
They also had a Galil and M1 Carbine in the opening cinematic yet couldn’t be bothered to add them either

Do you have a good mod that replaces it? I don't know of any but I'd love one

Then, without a combat rifle and no care to add a unique one, they just gave the Combat Shotgun a .45 rechamber with some different magazines and called it a day.
likely an attempt at creating a AK/M16 style of weapon system.
but with no interest in making it work.
Honestly that’s the combat rifle’s worst sin, being a copy-paste of the combat shotgun
That's pretty much exactly how that went
I noticed that the ejection port on combat shotgun is smaller than the shells are, and the shells tend to eject misaligned with the ejection port
Indeed! 😅
The fallout 3 Combat Shotgun wouldnt work, havent looked at the fallout 4 one but, I just want you to look at the FO3 one

Fallouts navy kept the m16 70 odd years after the rest of the coubtry moved to newer guns so yes this happens even in fallout

It actually isn't based on the G3 -- Rather, it's based more on the HK33, which is the G3's 5.56 younger brother that was somewhat successful.
It looks more like a CETME Model C to me.
Honestly with designs like Combat Armor I’d think that rifles like Battle Rifles would come back into fashion, similar to how higher caliber rifles are making a comeback due to body armor. R91 is Goat, one of the better rifles in Bethesda’s Fallout
But the combat rifle isn’t even a rifle caliber weapon as it uses the .45 ACP cartridge.

No, the HL2 SMG is even worse, thats the worst goddamn gun in gaming.
Also the BAR mag kinda sucks.
Making it semi-auto only doesn't really save any weight, in fact it might make the gun slightly heavier.
The reason they kept the M1 instead of adopting the BAR is because the BAR was almost 50% heavier (13.75 lbs vs 9.5 lbs)

Plus, you could potentially use a workbench to make into a squad automatic weapon by attaching a bipod + drum magazine and making it automatic - or convert it to 5.56 and effectively turn it into a Mini-14.

Fallout 4 and 76 guns don't feel like guns, they feel like wands that spawn bullets while jiggling
Fun fact the G3 was considered for the US standard service rifle but was beat by the M14 for some reason. Also, in the fallout 4s live action trailer, the lone survived had an M14 sooo...
Something you missed. 45acp make little to no use of a muzzlebreak/compensator. The round is so low pressure, that after a few inches, the pressure has dropped below the point of having any real effect from trying top divert the escaping gases. The sad thing about the BAR is that there were versions chambered in 308, and even more modernized and lightened. Both FN and Colt made them.
Also I think Ian over on Forgotten Weapons mentioned that the Belgians ran the BAR for a good number of years after we stopped. There's also "modern" BARs made by various small gun makers I think Kentucky Ballistics has one called an HCar.
@@jamesdevore3022 It's actually a popular weapon to hunt with nowadays, due to it's great accuracy, reliability, and the strength of the 30-06 combined with the barrel length. You could also say it's a Carbine, it is a shortened rifle that fires smaller than rifle cartridges.
@@xX_Pokeman_Xx The transistor was never invented, but we see examples of computers and technology that far surpass our own technology by decades. Full 3D holographic maps, advanced AI... Hell, Fallout 2 literally had an AI called Skynet that gained self awareness, same with 3.
Point is, Bethesda, instead of leaning into the futuristic parts more seems to think everything needs to look like it's fresh out of some steampunk 50s fantasy. It doesn't, it looks ridiculous and doesn't blend with the original games at all.
@@xX_Pokeman_Xx
The original theming of Fallout was 50's retrofuturism with a few mixes of other themes like 80's cyberpunk and 90's gothic. Bethesda went futuristic but full on 50's aaesthetic. Note I didn't say retrofuturism as that is _what that era thinks the future looks like._
Us thinking about what the future is but giving it a 50s aesthetic is not the same as a person from the 50s thinking what the future looks like.
@@xX_Pokeman_Xx I think you're both wrong. I've heard that that's a misconception, and that the transistor WAS invented in-lore, just later.
The not-so-subtle sound effect whenever an inconsistency is pointed out is KILLING ME 😂
6:13 I will say that Bethesda I think admitted they didn't want ro litter the world with high damage .308 rifles at low level, but didn't want to make the gun endgame only, so the .45 was added after.
@@Ryan.2 It definitely looks more like a weapon that would have been "Power Armor Only" when it was first conceptualized.

@Enthusiastic Aizawa Bethesda sucks no matter what you say. They had time and they blew it.
@Enthusiastic Aizawa all game companies in southeast Asia have all the same issues and deadlines to meet because they are also businesses, except they don't suck.
@Enthusiastic Aizawa no it’s like 80% their fault and 20% cuts, deadlines and other stuff to blame, these guys did the bare minimum of work
I hated FO4 weapons with every fiber of my being and my soul
The guns from Fallout 4 look like plastic toys. They're just so unnecessarily big and full of nothing
I agree that it's an abomination.
stuff like this definitely makes me wonder if fallout 4 was a choose your own adventure book first and then in the last year switched to a fps.
"Aren't Lore Friendly"
The Aimpoint compM4 sure as shit ain't lore-friendly.
People compare this gun to the bar but imo it looks more like the assault rifle from og fallout
I like the historical design of BAR as well, but the sawed Clyde Barrow version is also pretty badass.
2:53 funny enough, Russia’s allied with America in Fallout’s pre-war lore. Basically, both hate China above all else, so they allied. Also, Russia is less communist in general in Fallout’s lore.
The Sole Survivor almost died of a heart attack when he saw the Combat rifle as he tried to figure out wtf happened to all the guns.
Here's hoping this one doesn't get demonitized
G3 with wood is so good to look at.
At least this doesn't make me wanna die of radiation poisoning.
Fun fact: they actually never issued carry handles in WW2 and bipods were pretty uncommon! :)
For example:
A game set in a tribal society just 30 years after the nukes where melee combat is the norm would have almost all of its guns be single shot pipe guns.
Am I the only one that, in spite of having decent bit of gun knowledge, actually thinks the combat rifle looks pretty okay?
another good fit for replacing the gun would be the FN FAL, cold era weapon, chambered in 7,62x51, battle rifle.
My only problem with that bar mod is that its oddly shiny.
Exactly.
They can make new weapons.
The problem is that the new weapons look like shit, badly designed, and wouldn't work.
At least this mashup looks more functional than everything else in this game

How on Earth can the people who proposed these weapon designs keep jobs?
I’ll never understand why they didn’t have it in the game. So stupid. 13:54

It's called, "Let's avoid paying royalties."

I hate that Bethesda's idea of Fallout is Atompunk WW2, when it's really not LOL
Exactly. Such a cool, complex universe that they water down.
Bro hates all guns bro a peace loving hippie
The fact that it uses .45 ammo and has a magazine size of a 7.62 x 51 NATO is crazy.
I've gone through and replaced all the meshes and animations for the combat Rifle with Skibadaas assets
It was worth learning to navigate the CK.
As a bonus I put the compensator for Skibadaas Anti material Rifle on the 10mm pistol.
