When he could not, he fought his father’s and his brother’s battle. Went out on his shield. A true man, a true person of character. Great movie.
The scene where Priam begs Achilles for Hector's body is almost ripped word for word from the Iliad. Pretty crazy that something written so long ago can still hit so hard today.
Not so crazy. Human nature is not different now than what it was two-thousand years ago. We are no intrinsically smarter than our remote ancestors back then; we just have the benefit of more accumulated knowledge. Despite advancements in technology, the human condition remains the same.

Everlasting glory-to have your name remembered throughout the ages, had a lot to do with your place in the afterlife for ancient Greeks. If no one remembered your name, you may as well not have walked the earth--if after your death people still spoke your name and recounted your deeds that was the closest to immortality you could hope to achieve. One of the most remarkable things about the Iliad was how much Homer humanized the Trojans throughout the poem. That is a very rare thing, even today but in antiquity that was exceptionally rare to portray the enemy side with empathy--we admire Hector and the plight of the Trojans as much as we feel for the Greeks.
I have loved this movie since it came out. Kahla, like you, I had a cursory knowledge of the Iliad only because I was reading Homer's Odyssey in high school. Having Peter O'Toole as King Priam was an inspired casting choice, with his smooth baritone voice presenting an image of a wise and discerning king who loved his people and was loved by them.

They did a great job on the fight choreography on Hector vs Achilles. The way they made Achilles moves to be very precise, very effective, almost like a dance, showing how used to fighting he was, since that was basically his whole life. While Hector, while also being a great fighter, is not as effective and many of his moves are in response to Achilles moves, that is in control most of the fight.

Couple cool facts which may have been stated: 1) Patroclus May have been Achilles cousin/brother but most believe he was Achilles lover. 2) after Achilles killed hector he dragged his body around the city for 2 weeks shouting about how he killed him and how all the gods see hector for a coward 3) the coins on the eyes are for the boat man which in Ancient Greece it was the boat man who would bring you to the underworld to be judged if you didn’t have money you’d wander aimlessly. 4) it was said 2 boys who’s survived the fall of Troy would get into a boat and land in Italy, there they created a town called Rome. 5) Odysseus was said to be the son of Athena, and she gave him the idea for the horse. Poseidon being the creator of the horse took offense to this and caused his ship to go awry on his way home thus beginning the odyssey.
certainly it's safe to say that this film made a lot of deliberate deviations from the myth, i guess because they felt it fitted this film's version of it better.
My biggest problem with this movie was always how the make it seem like it was Helens choice to go with Paris, when Menelaus was her choice of husband.
