Russell Crowe was interviewed back in 2020 for the anniversary of Gladiator. He said that not only did they use live tigers in that one fight scene, Crowe had to do a scene with one. Ridley Scott had him do a scene where a tiger comes up out of the ground and Crowe had to dive roll away from it. Crowe did the scene but said that the tiger's claws came within a few inches of nailing him. He told Scott, "I hope you got that take, because I'm not doing that again."

The actor who played Proximo (the Gladiator trainer) was Oliver Reed. He was an extraordinary british actor, with a very interesting, fascinating and atypical life. He also was known for his alcoholism, having some scandals on TV and cinema as a consequence of this. During the filming of Gladiator in 1999, he sadly passed away. He had been sober for months, but one night (during a break from filming the movie) in an Irish pub in Malta (after a bet), he drank three bottles of Jamaican rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous double whiskeys and challenged five young English sailors of the Royal Navy to arm-wrestling at The Pub bar (which after this incident was called Ollie's Last Pub). His bill, which was never paid, is preserved in a decorative frame in the bar.

The Roman (and Greek) ideal was a citizen soldier who only served in times of emergency to defend the Republic and then went home to his farm. But in practice, by the time of the events of this movie (the reign of Marcus Aurelius), that was more a nostalgic relic than reality, and the legions were mostly professional troops.

Oddly enough, despite it being a great movie I probably hadn't watched it since watching it on DVD decades ago and recently re-watched it on streaming and was asking myself "why have I not re-watched this again in all these years?" Great film.

Marcus represents all men who see both these things as the fruit of themselves. It is the journey that seeks to walk in the light before death meets us.
Not many supporting actors can hold their own in movies the same way Joaquin did as Commodus, I will still defend the hill that Joaquin also steals scenes he is in for Gladiator. This film is a masterpiece.
Crazy good movie. When it came out, it was one of those movies everyone at the cinema came out raving about it. Won a bunch of Oscars but coulda/shoulda won more...such as the score, and maybe best supporting actor for Pheonix to go with Russel Crowe's deserved best actor.
According to Google, a male adult Tiger ranges between 200 and 680 lbs. with females ranging between 140 and 370 lbs. 200 seems small for a tiger, and they look fairly large, so probably closer to 400 lbs. for these tigers.
"We're watching Gladiator today..." that's all you had to say, let's friggin' go. One of my fave films ever made! Perfect combo of amazing writing, characters, music and action. Cool fact - the opening battle is filmed in Bourne Woods, England in an area of the forest already fixed for deforestation so the fire in that battle is real, Ridley Scott just helped to speed up the deforestation process. P.S. props to War Doggo! There was a dream that was Rome...
Marcus Ulpius Traianus and Publius Aelius Hadrianus (both from Hispania, actual Spain), were the best and greatest emperors of the Roman Empire. Marcus Aurelius was a great one, probably the most cultured and profound, having his written testimonies as reliable proof.
Catherine, maggots only eat dead flesh so are perfectly suited to clean wounds. In fact they still use them for burn victims *not always, but sometimes*.
Kingdom of Heaven is another Ridley Scott movie with Orlando Bloom you might enjoy. If you haven't seen the Blade Runner films, those should be on your list too.
Young Padawan, you need not apologize for you have much to learn. The fact that you are so dedicated to Star Wars is honorable. I was only 4 years old when I saw Star Wars in the Theaters. Remember the Force will be with you…always. - Danny V.
"Is it normal to cry?" As a grown man who cries every time I see this movie, yes it's completely normal. You know how you always see those memes/shorts about how men want to just go out in a blaze of glory instead of peacefully in their beds? This movie shows why. We want to know that at the end of our lives, we died protecting something with cared for. We want to be remembered by those we leave behind, and have no regrets as we move on to meet those who went before us.
Commodus didn't order Maximus' family killed because he was angry. He murdered them to eliminate any heirs and his property could be confiscated. Very common then
Marcus Aurelius was played by the first Dumbledore, yes (Richard Harris). Harris appeared in the first two HP films, but later on died. Therefore, Michael Gambon continued playing Dumbledore in the rest of HP saga. Also, Richard Harris, had many stories of carousing and escapades with Peter O´Toole (and also an incident with the aforementioned Oliver Reed)
November 24, 2024 Good morning Catherine I remember watching this movie in high school, this is the second movie that has the music of Hans Zimmer and I won't spoil Gladiator II
From Hans Zimmer I recommend his first work in Hollywood, the one he did for Rain Man with Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, a beautiful soundtrack, a mix of electronics with flute. That work opened more doors for him in Hollywood. And speaking of Ridley Scott and Hans Zimmer, they have made more movies together, I recommend for reactines: Black Rain, Thelma and Louise, Black Hawk Down and Hannibal.
I just rewatched this last week and I cried at the end and surprisingly it was the Percy Jackson books that let me know that Commodus was actually Rome's most psychotic emperor
The real Emperor Commodus did fight gladiators in the arena in order to prove his manliness, but just as in the movie, he cheated: he made his opponents use swords made of soft lead while he used a real weapon.
@@justonecornetto80 Caligula is my standard response to people who complain about politics today: as long as we haven't elected a horse to the Senate, we're still doing a little better than Rome.

Don't feel bad about being late for this movie. I only watched it later in high school and there are plenty of others I haven't gotten around to watching. Another really good Ridley Scott Epic is Kingdom of Heaven (Make sure to watch the Director's edition as there was a lot of key stuff cut from the theatrical version). It also has an amazing soundtrack although I can't remember the composer off the top of my head.

The man with the golden mask/helmet that fight Maximus, is played by Sven-Ole Thorsen. He has never had a main role, he has only played smaller parts (like this in Gladiator) during his whole career. Do a search on him and I can almost guarantee that you have seen him before 😊👍
Dare I say, his show might be one of my all-time favorite concert experiences ever. It was truly one-of-a-kind, and hearing the scores to so many of his iconic films LIVE was especially emotional
Right? I felt the new one just pales in comparison in almost every way (maybe apart from some of the set pieces but meh, those were always gonna be decent.)
@@CatherineLaSalle Ahhh don't let outside opinions colour your expectations! A colleague of mine saw it and loved every minute. "Different strokes-" etc. 😁 TBH Pedro Pascal gets me to go to any movie. 👍
Fun fact: in the scene where Maximus founds his family murdered, Crowe was supposed to just get to a mark on the ground, fall to his knees and cry while the camera showed the hanging feet. Crowe came to Ridley Scott and said to him that he didn’t agree with the scene being only that, that he had to at least get to their feet and kiss them. He said that Maximus would feel he ultimately failed them, but that he wouldn’t fail them at least at getting to them. Ridley said that it would look ridiculous, but Crowe insisted. He was allowed to give it a shot, so they did one take. Ridley Scott was impressed, but apparently didn’t want to verbally admit he was wrong, so he just said to Crowe “just a little less snot”. So they tried again and the shot was included (thank God for that).
I was a guest on set for the beginning battle scene it was filmed in Aldershot UK I played football for Aldershot we was invited to set. It was a shame I didn't appreciate where I was at the time.
Honestly, I don't think an explanation or apology for not seeing a film is necessary. There are movies I've WANTED to see that I just never got around to because of... y'know... LIFE. I mean, I grew up in the 80s, and from the point of view of my parents, there are STILL "classic" movies that they grew up with that I haven't seen. That said, you're in for a FRIKKIN' RIDE. Oh and react to Deadpool & Wolverine. I REALLY want to see THAT reaction. XD LMAO
Omg yesssss I NEED to get to Deadpool and Wolverine soon!! And you’re so right, there are so many movies on my list that I need to get to, but time just keeps going by & before you know it I’ve never seen Gladiator! Trying to remedy that here as we venture into movie reactions & reviews more on the channel!
"You think I'm afraid?" "I think you've been afraid all your life". Maximus probably cut Commodus deeper with that exchange than with the actual dagger.
The first one was much better than the second one. Although Denzel was great in the new movie! I am a History professor and made a movie review of Gladiator II. I know some folks don’t really care about historical accuracy of movies, but if you are curious and wanted to know what was fact and what was fiction you can give it a watch! Even if you are not planning on watching the movie, watching my video is a fun way to learn about some Roman History! I will share the link! I can tell you they did not have sharks! But they did flood the Colosseum! I also have one for the first movie.
He slays it in everything he does but dare I say this may be my new favorite performance from him 👀 he created such a dynamic and complex villain, and in spite of it all I still had some pity for him
Aw thank YOU for watching with me! Can’t believe I’ve never seen this but better late than never! I think I probably appreciate it more now as an adult than if I had watched it as a kid
You held it together pretty good, was wondering why I did not see you cry throughout, was a bit worried, until the ending 🙂. It is said the movie Gladiator is the men's version of the movie Titanic. Nice review and reactions
For the most part, it's rather rare for a gladiator to die in the arena. It's mostly enemies of the empire, criminals, political, ideological, and religious enemies. Gladiators and their training were VERY expensive. The Emperor generally reflected the sentiment of the crowd. The crowd wasn't as bloodthirsty as Hollywood would have us believe. Gladiators would give a submission sign by holding up two fingers and this is when the Emperor, or other official would make the call as to their fate. Gladiators were more likely to die outside the arena than in it, even while they had better health care than the average citizen. There is a dispute as to the thumbs up meant life, or death. There was a phrase often used that was the equivalent of our "kicking the bucket " and that was "gone to grass." Some argue that the thumbs up was to represent a blade of grass, thus the thumbs up was actually the fatal judgment. We don't know one way, or another, but it's an amusing idea.
Historians recently found evidence that thumbs down meant weapons down, ie don’t kill. They didn’t know that back when Spartacus (1960) was made, so they guessed that thumbs up meant good, and that became so universal that movies ever since have had to stick with it.
Among all the "reaction to" channels happening right now, you stand out. I'm giving 5 Stars & a Well Done to your work here. The sound track helped make this movie epic. Check out The Green Mile if you haven't already. Classic Tom Hanks in a Steven King novel/movie. It's . . . different. 😊
Loved this watchalong with you! Thanks for that. I have an incredible amount of respect for an artist when they actually admit they can't do something or what is required is bigger than what they can provide... and that is Hans Zimmer. While working on "Now We Are Free" that starts when Maximus falls at the end, he said it needed something more, more than what he could provide. And he found it with the voice of Lisa Gerrard. Bringing her in and having her create those vocals, they gifted that movie and cinema with an incredible score. And as for his Prometheus score, it wasn’t just too good for that movie, he knocked it right out of the park! His end-credits score for those as well as his Da Vinci Code are always in high rotation on my cellphone jukebox.
Thanks so much for watching!! YESSS that was one thing that stood out to me at the Hans Zimmer concert - he dedicated so much time to praising the talents of his fellow band members and musicians, he really made an effort to give everyone the spotlight and show them the praise they deserve which I loved

Cat as soon as I saw you were reacting to this film, I knew one of the reasons was preparing for the new Gladiator ✌️👌 this one was good film but being older, I judge all Roman Empire films to the amazing Ben Hur, and Spartacus
The second "AM I NOT MERCIFUL??" by Commodus wasn't planned apparently and scared Connie Nielson because it was so unexpected. Jaoquin's performance in this film is one for the ages.

I won't comment on Gladiator 2 as I haven't seen it yet but this movie did not need a sequel. Honestly what I would love most of all is to see some real creativity in Hollywood and for studios to take a chance on new ideas and not go with so many remakes and sequels, all because they feel like they are the "safe option" instead of risking making something new.

Just saw Gladiator II yesterday! Great reaction and glad you could revisit your Roman era 😉 Glad you’re back and hope you had a good trip!
Gladiator is and will forever be one of my absolute favourite films of all time.
Strength and honour
You sold me queer giraffes.
Not many supporting actors can hold their own in movies the same way Joaquin did as Commodus, I will still defend the hill that Joaquin also steals scenes he is in for Gladiator. This film is a masterpiece.
"Tell me what you've been doing busy little bee"
Man this movie is an absolute masterpiece. Russell Crowe is a phenomenal actor.
It's crazy he could have won back to back to back best actor awards three years in a row for wildly different roles.
Joaquin to
He was an absolute boss in this that’s for sure!
Don't feel too bad, Catherine, practically everyone reacts the way you did at the end.
Ahahaha phew!! I figured it was a tearjerker for all 😂😂
@@CatherineLaSalle :-)
They also used leeches
Kingdom of Heaven is another Ridley Scott movie with Orlando Bloom you might enjoy. If you haven't seen the Blade Runner films, those should be on your list too.
Young Padawan, you need not apologize for you have much to learn. The fact that you are so dedicated to Star Wars is honorable. I was only 4 years old when I saw Star Wars in the Theaters. Remember the Force will be with you…always. - Danny V.
Aww thank you so much! Thanks for being here - May The Force Be With You!
This score is my favorite of all time. So thank you for pointing out just how good Zimmer is in this. Great react and Good Job "keeping it together" 🤣
"Is it normal to cry?"
As a grown man who cries every time I see this movie, yes it's completely normal.
Who cares about you not seeing something before most people? Don't worry about stuff like that.
Commodus didn't order Maximus' family killed because he was angry. He murdered them to eliminate any heirs and his property could be confiscated. Very common then
" What we do in life echoes through eternity" . Never a more true statement.
Apparently the actress who played Lucilla did not know that Joaquin was going to yell in her face in that scene so her reaction was genuine.
Ridley Scot at his finest
I saw this in the theater in May 2000.

Good morning Catherine I remember watching this movie in high school, this is the second movie that has the music of Hans Zimmer and I won't spoil Gladiator II
You obviously haven't heard of Caligula and Nero.
@@justonecornetto80 Caligula is my standard response to people who complain about politics today: as long as we haven't elected a horse to the Senate, we're still doing a little better than Rome.
Woooooaaah wait he made it into the Percy Jackson series?! 👀
@CatherineLaSalle yeah it was actually in the Trials Of Apollo book series but all those books are in the same universe so I just call them all Percy Jackson books
Oh, I understand your passion with Rome.
I've lived in Rome most of my life.
Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard have their magic repeated in the movie "The Insider" Starring Russel Crowe and Al Pacino among other greats. A must watch. Regards from India,
"I'm terribly vexed." 🤣😂😆
He says with the straightest face 😂 I had to laugh
Oh Cat I have been waiting for this...."Are You Not Entertained!!!!" ⚔️🤘 Hand's down one of my favorite movies of all time up There with "The Last Samurai" Hanz Zimmer 🎵 ...Now We are Free..;)
About to be streaming this epic song on Spotify for the rest of the year and crying!! Sooooo darn good!
The Last Samurai, also what a film...
@@birdchurch9488 Thanks man 🙏☯️ I have The Armor from it when I went to Japan to study Kendo back in 2009 replicaded ❤️⚔️ and The Sword Tom Cruise gets at the end 🙏
@ace360 That's so cool! I think it might be my fave Tom cruise film, def top 3. If you had fight in the Colosseum, are you rocking a lightsaber or a katana?
@@birdchurch9488 Dimachaerus Fighting style from My Stunt day's with Dustin clare aka Gannicus from "Spartacus Vengeance" Back in 2011 I really need to upload those pictures 🤣👊👍
This was the movie where I finally discovered you can hate a character but appreciate the performance. Jaoquin really is incredible in this movie. I just revisited this not too long ago too, and by the end was weeping like a baby. And cannot say enough about this movies score..
Heck yessss I was so mesmerized every time Commodus was onscreen! Even though he continued to devolve deeper and deeper into his madness, I couldn’t look away. He really stole the show with this role
@CatherineLaSalle I had to see who beat him for best supporting actor that year, and it was Benicio Del Toro in Traffic. That movie was remarkable too but not sure if he was better than Jaoquin
46:11 They had to keep that theme for last. After all, it’s called “Now we are free” (the title alone is enough to make anyone feel the onions in the air).
29:15 One of the most iconic revenge promises in cinema History! ⚔️ 47:32 🎵🙏 I bet so Cat I remember when you and Tom told Me in May I was so Hyped for you guys seeing Hanz Zimmer Live, I still get Onion ninjas from this no worry's My Friend Great reaction and review Cat.."Strength and Honor" 👊
"You take life when you have to, as I do."
"I have only one more life to take, then it is done."
That response goes so hard!
I really appreciate when somebody watch the movie quite in silence, show reactions and only talk about the movie at the end. You know how to discover a movie 😉
So many great lines and the acting is all on point and of course the action sequences, the Hans Zimmer music as you said great reaction from you as always.
For real, this film has EVERYTHING!! Truly covers all the bases when it comes to performances, production, story & emotion
There was a dream called Rome!…it was a desire of Marcus Aurelius!…this movie is a masterpierce, and Hans Zimmer is the Mozart of our century!
It depicts the events leading up to the 3rd Crusade and has Orlando Bloom, Liam Neeson, Eva Green and a bunch of other really good actors. It also has an amazing soundtrack although I can't remember the composer off the top of my head.
Composer is the great Harry Gregson Williams 👌🎶🎵🎶🎵 He did Gladiator 2 this time
this movie just hits different man. it has EVERYTHING. the best film ever made imo.

The Arrowverse has made two easter egg references to Gladiator 2000 specifically in Supergirl Season One Origin of Hope episode thirteen For the Girl who Has Everything and Arrow the Final Season Legend of the Green Arrow episode five Prochnost

When Maximus talks of going home, the Roman (and Greek) ideal was a citizen soldier who volunteered to defend the Republic in times of crisis and then went home. But in practice, by the time of the events of this movie (the reign of Marcus Aurelius), that was more a nostalgic relic than reality, and by then the legions were mostly professionals.
I saw this at a cinema here in Scotland and when the intro text said "to the borders of northern England" the whole audience cheered haha
The man with the golden mask/helmet that fight Maximus, is played by Sven-Ole Thorsen. He has never had a main role, he has only played smaller parts (like this in Gladiator) during his whole career. Do a search on him and I can almost guarantee that you have seen him before 😊👍
"They're going for the flank, you got the sandwich method", lol, IIRC that's called the "Hammer and Anvil"
I saw Hans in NY in September and it really was something. There were times i could feel my eyes start to water too
Dare I say, his show might be one of my all-time favorite concert experiences ever. It was truly one-of-a-kind, and hearing the scores to so many of his iconic films LIVE was especially emotional
“Is it normal to cry?” During this movie yes. For wasting your money on Gladiator 2, normal to cry as well.
Right? I felt the new one just pales in comparison in almost every way (maybe apart from some of the set pieces but meh, those were always gonna be decent.)
Dang I was really hoping it was gonna be in the same league as this one, rats
@@CatherineLaSalle Ahhh don't let outside opinions colour your expectations! A colleague of mine saw it and loved every minute. "Different strokes-" etc. 😁
TBH Pedro Pascal gets me to go to any movie.
👍
Your not crying, I'm crying um I mean I'm not crying, you're crying.
He was a farmer, hence why he would always "feel" the dirt. It grounded him.
Ohhhh Catherine I am sooooo jealous you went to see the amazing Hans Zimmer in concert , great reaction to .👍👍👍👍
It's a great movie. In fact, Gladiator and Braveheart are two of the greatest "guy movies" ever made
I was a guest on set for the beginning battle scene it was filmed in Aldershot UK I played football for Aldershot we was invited to set.
You’ve gotta be shitting me. 😮 you’ve never seen it ?!
YOU KNEW THIS i confessed it to you in shame at Hans Zimmer 😂 I'm righting my wrongs!!
😂 "My name is Maximus And I will Have My Vengeance in this life or the Next" Gowd so good!!!! Alex High 5!
@ oh right that was you!! I totally thought it was someone else! Or maybe I blocked it out
@@CatherineLaSalleoh my gosh. Literally “the movie that makes men cry” and you have not seen this?! Where have you been Cat? Lol
Alright, who's cutting onions...again? ;)
Hanz Zimmer. The Thin Red Line best War film made imo, awesome score by Zimmer
Joaquin Phoenix did such a great job as Commodus in this.
He slays it in everything he does but dare I say this may be my new favorite performance from him 👀 he created such a dynamic and complex villain, and in spite of it all I still had some pity for him
@ The historical Commodus was just a vicious egomaniac that got drowned in his bath so that he made him sympathetic at all is even more impressive.
Beautiful reaction Catherine! Thank you so much!
Aw thank YOU so much for watching!
This movie has so much honor and glory in it. Thank you for watching this.
Aw thank YOU for watching with me! Can’t believe I’ve never seen this but better late than never! I think I probably appreciate it more now as an adult than if I had watched it as a kid
Now you've seen this Russell Crowe classic, you need to see Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.
Great shout, amazing film
This has been a wonderful reaction, thank you.
Another film for you to watch is Rollerball (1975). starring James Caan.
See you next movie.
I cried at the end the first time and almost every other time I've watched this.
This Film Is Simply Awesome So Glad You Got To See & Enjoy this fantastic film. Russell Crowe is Incredible in this. (may i recommend another cracking film starring Russell Crowe & Guy Pearce It's Called LA Confidential it's a Great Thriller) Have a lovely Day👍
Joaquin Phoenix playing Commodus, so good, my favorite character in this
Truly!! We love a complex villain, his performance was absolutely mesmerizing
This channel just watched Predator, Gladiator w/ the tigers is the Guerrilla who head shot the hostage in Predator. Sven ol Tholson. He's got cameos in several of Arnold's Movies!
You earned a Fellow gen z subscriber. Gladiator is my favorite film
It is definitely the music. One of the best movies of all time. Makes me scared for the sequel
Yeaaah I wanna go see it regardless of what anyone says, but I’m beginning to think nothing can top this!
27:53 she makes the exact same face as joaquin phoenix
LOLOL I noticed that back while editing 😂😂 very unintentional lol
