  • Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman remains one of the strongest entries in the DC Extended Universe. With a sequel on the horizon in the form of Wonder Woman 1984, it's time to interrogate what makes the original such a classic.

    Gal Gadot makes it. She is perfect for the role. Also DC made her a tough woman but a feminine woman. One of my fav scenes was when she showed her feminine side with bumping into a baby in London. Such a small touch but spoke volumes.

      I couldn't agree more! The movie wasn't shoving a FeMiNiSt agenda down our throats. It was more about how women can be (and are) heroes too without insulting the other gender.
      Now that is something that makes even a fairly average movie so lovable!

      Despite basically being a god, Diana and Steve always felt like equals in the movie. They didn't make Steve lesser than Diana to make her look stronger, which was perfect. It definitely helped with their chemistry being nearly perfect throughout the movie

    Those shield slides are freaking genius, and the fight choreography looks "realistic" eg. every attack she is utilizing her whole body instead of a lot of the superman style stuff where he clearly overpowers and doesn't have to use much effort or body movement outside of the portion in motion inflicting the damage.
    I also really liked Gal Gadot in this role, I think she did an amazing job.

    I remember sitting between my fiancée and oldest friend in the theater on WW's opening night, and quickly glancing left and right to see both girls shedding joyous tears as they smiled at Diana's magnificence during the No Man's Land scene. It made an already powerful and moving moment one of the greatest moviegoing experiences of my entire life. To see such an ernest portray of true female power (without the sacrifice of femininity) affect the two most important women in my world so positively was a gift after seeing their frustration when "strong" females were usually just men in "woman suits" in most media. The successes more than made up for the weaknesses of the film. Looking forward to WW84!

      The one thing I noticed is that the outfits of the Amazonians in this movie weren't sexually objectifying. I'm not going to say they weren't revealing, but compared to the costumes, and more importantly, the camera shots! in Justice League, the women (especially the Amazonians) in Wonder Woman were treated with more taste and discretion, and not just cheesecake shots waiting to happen.
      I'm piggybacking off this comment because I'm a late 30s man who watched this in the theater with my wife and son, and I thought it was absolutely great to be able to show my son a movie (an action movie, even!) with a female lead and not get a dozen shots of exposed midriffs, cleavage, and booty. I feel like that movie was great right up until the 3rd act. It wasn’t just Aries turning into an armored CGI monster.
    The trouble starts when they go back to the village to find everyone dead. It basically negates the work she put in in the awesome No Man’s Land sequence. And it doesn’t have the emotional impact of an event that takes away a hero’s great accomplishment, because they didn’t set up the possibility of losing it, give the audience time to process the impact of losing it, and then show us the loss. We just hear that it’s been attacked and are then immediately presented with Diana crying in a village obscured by smoke and gas.
    Then, the problem with Aries is the fact that he exists at all. The whole movie up to that point was about how the capacity to do great evil exists in the hearts of humans. Diana comes to the realization that Aries isn’t the lynch pin holding the war together, and that’s a powerful message in and of itself. Then suddenly, Aries shows up. And he IS the lynch pin that’s holding the war together. Then she defeats him and the war is over. And it’s impossible to have a “HOORAY” moment because this is set in World War One. Whether Aries exists or not, we know what’s going to happen in just about 2 decades. It’s like all of Diana’s victories are ultimately meaningless.

    My only gripe with this film is the entire Charlie character arc.
    They built it up as if there was going to be a payoff during the scene where it's up to him to save the team and he just flounders.
    Like wow, what a waste.

    • @mrpenguins7709
      @mrpenguins7709 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I do understand your problem but I feel the lack of payoff is stronger as it represents that mental health cannot just easily be fixed, he is going to have to work his hardest to ‘defeat’ it. And the way his friends support him and understand him even with his major weaknesses makes their friendship feel stronger. But yes the lack of a payoff does make his story feel incomplete.

    • @vetarlittorf1807
      @vetarlittorf1807 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Payoff? You make it sound as if Charlie had a fear to overcome, but he was actually dealing with PTSD which cannot be cured. The point of it was to show Diana (who had never heard of this mental condition) that wars leave marks on the world. Same with Sammy, who is unable to follow his dreams to become an actor simply because he's not white, which shows Diana that humans are hateful to each other even in the absence of war.
      The point of the movie is for Diana to realize that humans have no one to blame for their misery but themselves and that Ares wasn't the cause of their wars, he just took advantage of them.

    • @zom8680
      @zom8680 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      OP here, coming back to this I realize now that Diana also mentions that snipers have no honor so perhaps him not taking g the shot was indeed the payoff because he realizes it's not heroic...?

    I was pleasantly surprised with this movie after getting nothing but crap from the DCEU. It's a great movie that gets a lot right. Diana is an amazing character who is both gentle and caring while being tough and skilled at the same time. I'd say the movie falters a little at the end, though. I feel like the reveal of Ares being real messed up the movie's message. Diana is constantly having her worldview shaken because she thinks everything is black and white. Steve challenges her multiple times, saying people are flawed and can have both good and bad qualities. Then Ares shows up and proves Diana right, that the villains were actually good and were being controlled by an evil entity. I think the end would've been better if Ares wasn't real and Diana had to wrestle with being wrong in her simplistic view of the world. I think having the climax being about stopping the plane would've been better than her fighting Ares.

    • @JW-xd8up
      @JW-xd8up 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I disagree. Remember Ares, didn't actually make the humans commit their atrocities. He just, as he says, gives them the tools necessary to commit crimes. For example, he didn't force Luddendorf to gas the town. Now, I know this sounds ridiculous, but you have to remember that wonder woman's DNA lies in Greek Mythology, and Ares' role in the film is actually a fairly common trope in mythic and religious stories: a god tests humankind to see if they deserve mercy. A great example would be God testing Abraham in the Book of Genesis. The film uses this trope to ask if humans are inherently good or evil. Diana fully admits that we have faults, but she doesn't use our faults as an excuse to smite us with Divine wrath like Ares does.

    • @nathanreece1154
      @nathanreece1154 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JW-xd8up The first time I watched it, I actually respected the movie for sticking to the Greek roots. The more I thought about it, though, the less I liked it. I remember Ares saying he basically just gave humans a nudge, and they were responsible for everything that happened afterward. But right after Diana actually kills Ares, you see the Germans shaking their heads, acting all confused. They look like they're coming out of some sort of trance. I get the idea they were trying to communicate. I just don't think it was super clear.

I loved 90% of the film and when she thought she ended the war only to find she didn't, I thought that and the message behind it was brilliant but then they ruined by all that by suddenly making Professor Lupin the real big bad in a lazy executed plot twist and undermined Diana's character arch.

    I'm an old man who was a little boy when the Linda Carter Wonder Woman tv show was on the air. As a result Wonder Woman was my first super hero and I love the character to this day. Wonder Woman 2017 was the best DC movie to date (with Shazam a close second) and I am really looking forward to 1984.

    I think the ending sucks Ares shouldn’t exist and the lesson should have been humans are neither evil or good they are all grey. The CGI in the end is Doomsday level. The side characters have a nice set up but have no conclusion. Ludendorf is more like a moustache villain murders his own soldiers for no reason and doesn’t do much. If the ending would have been nailed the movie would have been great. But because we are in a different world it’s just mediocre. And the Woman who made the Gas should have been the main villain

    • @erubin100
      @erubin100 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ares can still exist, it's just that he doesn't actually do anything to instill war and just sits back and gets stronger and stronger over the centuries thanks to humans fucking up, eventually getting to the point where no power in the cosmos could stand up to him. It would be literally humanity creating their own armageddon.

    The reason this movie is good is simple, it has likeable characters with good chemistry and a hero that is actually heroic.

    What I don't like about Wonder Woman is how vaguely scaled her abilities are just so that she can be seen as on par with Superman whenever the story wants. If she's as durable as Supe's then she wouldn't need the bracelets and shield but her using her defenses in combat makes her interesting to watch as opposed to standing there arrogantly while somebody puts a gun to her head. Knowing that she's ultimately vulnerable to a fatal blow but is so skilled you couldn't land one keeps you on the edge of your seat during a fight scene but if she can be taken out by bullets like her fellow Amazons then Superman is objectively a far more powerful hero which we can't allow in the era of gender equality. Don't get me started on whether she can fly out not.

    Looking through the comments, I don't think I've ever seen so much vitriol thrown Wonder Woman's way. I always thought it was the best of the DC movies. Heck, Jenkins didn't even have a large hurdle to jump through to achieve that rank; she could have made the movie a nice, average superhero movie, but instead made an excellent superhero movie rivaling even the top dogs of the MCU. That said, nearly everyone is right to call the third act its low point, but that's like saying Return of the Jedi is the weakest film in the original Star Wars trilogy: it's still good.

    Personally I don’t think Ares should have been in the movie at all. It would have been much more effective if Wonder Woman learned that there was no god corrupting humanity and instead the capacity for evil was something all humans can have. But she would also learn that the capacity for good also exists in people as well and thus the world is often an unclear place in which things aren’t purely good or evil.

  • @Con_Tomlinson
    @Con_Tomlinson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I thought Wonder Woman was dreadful and to this day don't understand the praise.
    The Themyscira CGI was garish, fight scenes relied on an unmastered usage of slow-mo, and the final battle was so poorly lit it was difficult to watch.
    Ares was predictable, and had an awful design with Thewlis' Nigel Thornberry moustache.
    The additional villains and roster of side-characters weren't well fleshed out enough (with Sameer the only saving grace).
    And it still isn't addressed as to why Doctor Poison didn't just drop the super soldier serum exclusively on the German side rather than use blanket coverage of her death gas across both armies (particularly as this would prolong the bloodshed and give Ares more power from the longer, bloodier conflict).

    One thing that bothered me in this movie is the representation of the German soldiers. I get why most American WW2 movies use Nazis as faceless bad guys that the hero can beat up without restraint, but this is supposed to be WW1. During the no man's land and village battles, the only thing in my head was "Wow, those random German conscripts who would rather be with their family than fighting a pointless and terrifying war, REALLY didn't deserve to be slaughtered by a fucking immortal Greek goddess with superpowers". In comparison with The First Avenger, Steve Rogers is a very strong soldier fighting Nazis even more evil than the regular ones and they have advanced weapons that can actually hurt him, so the heroic tone is kinda justified. Here she's just wiping the floor with regular dudes that are exactly as "bad" as the ones WW is siding with...
