  • World Ranked 1,2,3 all played this past weekend and in this episode I do a comparison of their respective performances.
The Autumn International Series is over for most teams with Ireland to play Australia next weekend at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. So how did South Africa, New Zealand and Ireland go this weekend I take a look at each of their first and second half performances.
Let me know in the comments what you thought of these three games, and did I get it right?
Thanks for supporting the channel by subscribing, liking the video and sharing it with your rugby pals.

As an Ireland fan I would love to be playing the ABs this week. I think it was really bad planning to schedule a team as good as New Zealand first up without any match time together.

@Camcolito Not an excuse. New Zealand deserved their win totally. But I think it would definitely be a lot closer if Ireland had a bit more match time under the belt. New Zealand might still have won though but Ireland would definitely be better if they played them later in the series.

Hi Mark, an interesting podcast, I enjoyed it. As an Irish fan I have to say I think it is a shame that so much focus has been on the Sam P incident, I do understand that it needed to be mentioned, most Irish pundits and fans are either saying it should have been a red or he was lucky.
However, I would like to draw attention to Gus McCarthy, who I thought had an excellent debut! I’ve watched the game back and I think he was involved in most of the tries somewhere or other. He gave a really good and solid performances. Excited about him. Also Cormac Izuchukwu deserves a mention, he had a fairly quiet game but I am sure there is more to come from this young man. Thanks Mark.

@lizzyhanahoe4197 Thanks so much for the comment. I full understand re Sam P is concerned. Same was said about Sam Cane for NZ at last years RWC Final, thats all every one talked about, not how close NZ got to winning.

Really enjoyed the Autumn internationals as well as your commentary along the way. Rugby is in a very interesting space right now. ABs need to find a centre combination, but are trending positively. Ireland looking healthy and so are the French. Aus can call their tour a success but need a miracle for the Lions series. Boks have seemingly limitless depth, but I would like to see a more settled structure next year.

Thanks Mark. Great analysis as always. I thought Prendergast escaped the red only because of his slender frame and age. If he had the physique of some of the Fijians or Bundi Aki, I think he would have gone for sure. ABs didn't have a great performance at all but I also think Italy to their credit provided much more of a fight than Wales or Fiji. I only wish we had played the ABs last and not first out of the blocks.

If I remember correctly, the reason the ref passed on to the captains for Prendergast's yellow not being upgrading was it was not a high degree of danger. BO'D on commentary said that that mitigation should not have been applied because of the nature of the "tackle", i.e. it was always foul play with a no arms shoulder directly to the head. Can someone clarify what the law actually says about mitigation can and cannot be applicable?
Edit: I've dug out the Law Application Guidelines from World Rugby. During the off-field review, the following factors are considered to estalish the degree of danger: • Direct vs indirect contact • High force vs low force • Dynamic v passive.
Keywords to think about that lead to yellow (low danger) or red (high danger) are:
Yellow: Indirect contact • Low force • Low speed • No leading head / shoulder / forearm / swinging arm.
Red: Direct contact • Lack of control • High speed • Dynamic • Leading head / shoulder / elbow / forearm • Swinging arm • Reckless • Intentional or an always-illegal act.
So the problem boils down this: by my reckoning, at least 3 if not 4 of the criteria for red apply to this incident. Possibly one (low force) might apply to indicate yellow. So when you have some criteria pointing towards red and one towards yellow, which take precedence? As clear as mud.
BTW, I didn't bother copying over the wording about mitigation, as the guidance is crystal clear that mitigation does not apply to intentional or alway-illegal acts of play, and even if they were applied, none were relevant to this incident.

We have ample midfielders who are performing and I say this on behalf of all fans, we are not the coach or the selectors but even a blind man can see that Reiko is not an international centre, as for Richie, he can't come back soon enough just to keep the current 10s on their toes and he should offer a fresher, more direct approach to the ABs game plan, as far as where we are at globally, the Boks and the French are in a league of their own atm followed by us and the Irish, Australia, England, Argentina, Italy, Scotland....

NZ needs strong Australian teams to get them back to being dominate again. With the South African teams leaving the super rugby comps and being stuck with weak Australian sides, it is having a negative effect on our players.

Comprehensive win for Ireland but Fiji were very poor so we can't judge where Ireland are after that game. The Australia game will tell us more and after watching the game in Murrayfield I reckon Ireland should win this one. Prendergast was indeed lucky to have just got yellow. He'll learn from that though. Other than that he played very well as did the other new lads which was great to see. Looking forward to seeing what team AF puts out against the Wallabies and who wears the 10 shirt.
SA did more than enough in the first half to beat Wales and I think they just took the foot off the pedal at times in the second half. A comprehensive win was never in doubt. They are definitely top of the rugby tree now and will be for quite a while unlike Wales who are pretty much at rock bottom now. Not sure how or when they can turn things around. Tough times for Welsh supporters right now that's for sure.
NZ looked a bit lacklustre in their game and maybe a bit tired after that France game? They still won though and never looked like losing. Razor will be happy with 3 from 4 particularly after beating England and Ireland. Credit to Italy though...they acquitted themselves well here considering what happened in the same fixture in the WC last year. But I agree with you AB's are still not quite firing on all cylinders yet although they seem to be on the right track.
    A very entertaining Autumn Series.

I agree with the ranking but in truth SA was a combo side with a unfamiliar front row starting and a few experiments made with debuts and such. I still think SA takes the honor for the year overall with 52 players being rotated while maintaining a high win percentage. Ominous indeed because one feels that if any other side did that they would’ve had a major dip in performances. First year with a new coaching setup they are looking like building two sides who can compete with the top sides. Rassie doing Rassie things … either a village idiot or certified genius. We have to give him the benefit of the doubt though

That's just not true. Most commentators said that he was very lucky to get away with a yellow, which he was. Sam was stupid, probably pumped up a bit too much on his starting debut. However, he ran the attack very well and he provides a different dynamic than our other tens.. He is only 21 and has much to learn including making stupid mistakes but I think his potential is undeniable.

If this is a red card then we are going to see so many red cards in the future. I thought yellow was fair.
