I had a citizen dive watch in the early 2000’s. It also had a depth gauge. This was a period in my life that I was all about scuba diving and only cared about watches in that I needed one to actually dive. The gauge worked great, and was with me when I logged my deepest dive ever (122 ft). If I could find it, I’d wear it everyday.

I love Citizen Promaster watches. My first Citizen was one of the original versions of this diver. I still have it, still wear it and is still my favorite, still working great. Over 20 years old now and the case back has yet to be cracked open. A Citizen Promaster is the best watch you can get for the money.

I've seen a video of a $10 Casio F91W taken to 100 feet depth to see if it reaches its rated 30m rating which it did.
I think we underestimate the water resistance ratings with people scared to wash their hands with 30m rated watches. As long as the seals are checked every year or so most watches should be able to handle that, though perhaps not most people :-)

I am the proud owner of an Aqualand from the late 90s (jp1010). That one got two digital displays in addition to the standard 3 hands. It is a great watch and in my humble opinion it is way better than these new Aqualand models. It has exactly the same features as this one and WAY more. It logs the current depth, the maximum depth, the average depth, the water temperature and the divetime digitally. It saves all of these Measures for the last 4 Dives. It also warns you when you are going deeper than a certain depth or longer than a maximum time. It also has an alarm if you are ascending too quickly, which is an importand measure for any diver. Oh and it has a normal Alarm for waking you up in time for the first Dive. I know, all of that stuff is easy with a digital watch and i understand, why this one doesn´t have that many features, but i really cannot understand, why they stepped away from this (perfect) analog/digital design. It would definitely have helped with that stupidly slow reset of the chronograph, which is a no go for me. One point that I am missing with mine over this one though is the Eco-Drive movement, which is simply great, especially in a dive watch you don´t really want to open the caseback yourself every 2 Years.

Years ago when I was a PADI dive master there were no dive computers but there were a few watches you could get with a capillary depth gauge and they were expensive and highly coveted. As a dive watch Citizen is my favorite, maybe not this one with the chrono features, but I do have a previous version of this with the depth gauge and it’s excellent.

Dive computers are great but they’re expensive and do fail on occasion. You must have a reliable backup. I currently use the Citizen Promaster Aqualand BN2038-01L and it’s great. Very interesting, but a little bit strange. This watch has left the diving watch territory and trying to get into the dive computer area. Great on their own, but I can hardly imagine a diver wearing this watch, which made as a diving tool, but preferring it to a dive computer that have tons of aditional fuctions for same price. It is not just a watch any more but still not a computer. Neither fish nor fowl. It is more of a collectible/cool/stylish than for real diving. But the thing is killer cool, no questions. Only thing that was damaged is paint on the bezel but numbers can still be read as they are engraved. Watch went also on diving and it still works fine.I have ordered same one only black with rubber strap and dark blue dial. The metal wristband is not for heavy duty as daily as you can hurt your hand. Battery still holds without problem it's long life solar powered. Radio control syncronisation starts everynight at 1:30 and the watch shows always precise time and no need to change summer winter time. Best watch I ever had. What a coincidence Jody. We had a meal at a Texan steak house in Istanbul last night, and our friend joined us. He is a Turk, a marine archaeologist and professor working for a German university. He researches ancient structures and shipwrecks in the Mediterranean and was wearing this watch! I fell in love with it. He wouldn't swap it for a nice Seiko I offered him but it was worth a try!! And of course you are right, us divers do wear dive computers but use a watch as a backup in case of glitches. Size wise he has a wrist size about 8" so works fine and does look very good on yours too. As for the depth measurement it could be that the watch is accurate and the guage on your expensive hi tech equipment is wrong! 😉 Fantastic review Jody, having seen this in the flesh, it's on my list. Great review Jody. “Red light is quickly filtered from water as depth increases and red light effectively never reaches the deep ocean. Color is due to the reflection of different wavelengths of visible light.” That is the reason most tool diver’s watches are white Arabics/indiceces on a black background & Doxa went with orange back in the 60’s. I wonder actually how visible the red depth & minute hands (the only things of import) are on that busy background are at depth?

I love Citizen watches! I’ve purchased half a dozen over the past year. My favorites are the blue dial PCAT,and the Blue Angel’s World Time Chronograph.

I want that. I SCUBA dive. BTW, recreational diving is not supposed to exceed 40 meters depth so a 50 meter depth gauge is fine. Oris makes a depth gauge watch with a simple bubble tube for sensing depth so it is much smaller and suitable for daily wear. G-Shock has a divers watch with features like this Citizen. Oh, but the G-Shock is $1700. Ouch. And the Oris is $2900. I'm liking the Citizen more. I have a Citizen Nighthawk that I have loved for 15+ years.

I really like this Aqualand model....I have 4 Promaster Citizens at home, and I'm really thinking about buying this model with a blue bracelet. In my country it costs 730 euros, I don't know if it's too expensive?

On that last sentence, if you want a big presence watch that can do it all, and cheaper even, that is the G-Shock. There is even a Tough Solar versions. That said, I checked some of the Master of G models, and their dive watches are all more expensive than this Citizen! 😵What happened there? Casio is more expensive than Citizen Promaster? I am so out of touch with watch prices these days...

Hey Jody, there is a watch which have a divemeter and costs less then this one. The north edge gavia2. I received mine around a month ago...well it is a big-big (and again big) watch, but i love it.

Hallo Jody, Have you ever reviewed the Citizen Promaster Automatic? I have two "Autos", one from the mid 90's and the other from a couple years ago both are in the NY0040 family, my older one is a black dialed version with lumed applied indices and the newer one has a beautiful deep blue saffire sunburst dial with lumed applied indices. These are remarkable watches for the price, an ISO certified 200M Diver, fully automatic, built like a tank, but easy on the eyes. Is it a Tudor,...NO but it's not trying to be its just a decent Dive watch, for decent money with some decent history behind it (Used by the Italian Military, and Several Police Forces. Rated to 200M, but tested to 500M with no operational faults. That's 1640ft. folks). I might be a little biased towards the watch, but it has never failed me Diving fresh or salt water, and it just has a cool charm to it. Thanks, from Dave in Canada

What a cool watch! I don't understand why Citizen doesn't get more love in the watch sphere, they make so many interesting models that are actually affordable to most. Also, Eco-Drive is one of the best things that has happened to watches, affordable, widely available, and solar powered. My parents, who aren't into watches, rave about how good their Eco-Drive watches are.

I love my Citizen Pro-master, this one is a big unit but I think they've done a great job . The Eco-drive system is as good as solar power units get in my opinion. That's a quality watch, thanks for the review.

I feel like the lettering on the bezel could have been done in a slightly bolder font to match thick white indices, hands and bezel pip arrow. Not feeling the bezel.

Nice to see Citizen watches getting reviewed. Any chance of you reviewing a The Citizen watch with the A060 movement (+/-5 seconds a year!), sapphire crystal, titanium, perpetual calendar and massive power reserve Eco-Drive. I really fancy one but sadly they're JDM and impossible to find in UK. Already have 3 Citizen Eco-Drives and think they're great watches, they just work.

Great review, Jody. Love your channel. Can’t help but wonder why Citizen has gone away from their original analog digital depth meter dive watches like the classic JP2000? Seems easier to read the digital screen for depth and other features.
