It’s been a crazy decade. Just going back to 2015, I remember $1000 dollars would mean you could acquire some serious timepieces for a sub collection. This felt like a fortune for a hobby then. The microbrand surge post 2018 definitely pushed the goalpost to what we supposedly assume is affordable now. Somewhere in this process, Seiko decided to rebrand itself, reprice accordingly. I now find myself looking at Citizen as genuinely affordable substitute.
My grandfather was the most amazing man and role model… I idolized him, and I paid attention to every little thing that he bought because he never paid attention to dime for anything unless he had done an obsessive amount of research; he was so excited, 12 years ago, to show me his new Citizen Eco-Drive. “NEVER NEEDS A BATTERY ITS THE BEST”, lol I have his watch now and it comes out for celebrations like weddings and my kids’ birthdays. I’m so happy to see so many people feel the love for Citizen that he did.
Citizen Eco-Drive is the best. Have several, my oldest one is almost 17 years old and just rock solid (wore it sailing racing for like 10 years, got plenty of scars and never missed a beat).
I finally broke down and purchased a Casio Duro this year. I liked it so much I bought a 2nd. Got two high quality bracelets and saphire crystals for them and they look great. Incredible value for the money. Now probably my favorite watches.😊
There are still many great Seiko watches but many that are not so great. I still think the Turtle or Mini Tuna are great dive watches. The cocktail time range of watches provides amazing value. But I don’t see a SARB equivalent for less than $500. You have to go well over $1k to get that level of performance and design.
I got into watches this year and bought an SRPE seiko 5 on sale which I then modded. I was seriously considering their Prospex SPB453. But I'm glad I went with a Cronos instead!
Ummm you aren't buying Seikos for retail price right? Amazing dials, beautifully finished and well made watches at 300 to 600 AUD (not even USD!). Microbrands need not apply, overpriced euros can disappear as well. Seiko watches are amazing value. Let go of the past, nothing stays super cheap
A great year for Vario IMO. I ended up buying that green Empire GMT you highlighted in this video plus two Vario Versas. High quality, beautiful watch with two separate movements. Customer service is served to none, including getting watches from Singapore to Missouri, USA in 3-4 days with shipping included in price of the watch.
My Seiko hangover was my pickup of the Seiko Recraft SNKN37 that ships with zero, nada, nothing lume. My fav pickup of my 100 new watches this year was my Aragon 45mm red dial diver with tritium.
I finally pulled the trigger for your Erebus Origin GMT (White dial). The watch is really well made and it has much wrist time in the past month. The only tiny gripe is that it's not really white but more of a matt + textured silver dial. Nonetheless, am glad to support you on your commercial adventure. 2024 must be so special for you and may 2025 be as exciting 😊 Happy holidays Jody 🥳
My first engagement with Ali was this year and it generated the Pagani Air King homage and the Militado Chrono. Both about GBP 50, both excellent. So a good year getting into watches !
Totally disagree about the new Samurai. In my opinion it has become better than the previous models. It’s smaller but looks still solid and aggressive. It wears and looks really great! Definitely a good release for Seiko. People will appreciate it more after seeing it in person 👌
For the Citizen slow & complicated watch, the alternative I'd recommend is a Casio Protrek anadigi like the PRG650. It has the analog world time and such, but it's quick and intuitive to operate. It seems like a better experience to new Citizen anadigi as well.
I took delivery of my Clemence Munro - ordered in late 2023 and delivered in Spring 2024. Love it! The bracelet followed later and I still haven't got round to trying it on but the watch has looked great on a bunch of different third party straps ❤
Excellent and entertaining 5/5 list as always. I didn’t realize Seestern had sent that message about the Erebus Lume. I know English isn’t their first language, but there is a clear different between a mistake and attempted fraud. You know that I know more than anyone else the difference between the two. Thanks again!
Citizen definitely kicked Seiko’s ass this year, for sure. The Erebus Ascent in Neon Pink blows me away everytime I see it. I missed the pre-order special but definitely need to order one in the near future. Great job, as always, Jody.
I missed my chance to get a green fume Ascent which would have been my choice so I'm holding out for you to make an off white one like the sarb cause the bright white doesn't appeal to me that much and looks a little flat, my white dials need to be off white or textured, no inbetween.
The best 2024 release for me would be the Tissot PR516 mechanical chronograph. Lovely reissue of a 1970's brand classic with a great movement. The modified ETA 7753 has 68h of power reserve, anti magnetic balance spring and is regulated to +/- 5 sec/day. Look it up if you haven't seen it.
Seiko has become like Benchmade in the knife world. Prices keep going up, while QC and quality go down. I once thought of Citizen as the solid, inferior brother to Seiko, but the truth of the matter is, they are starting to blow right past them. I still love Seiko. The dial designs are beautiful and their impressive catalog is something to behold, but they need to correct their business formula; and quickly.
I just started a channel less than 2 weeks ago posting TH-cam shorts. The challenges I go through to create a 60 second short makes me appreciate what you do more than ever. What you're doing is nothing less than exceptional. Thank you for your sacrifices to do this!
Top notch watch 2024: Tusenö Windseeker, v.2. Got it only last Friday, and I’m in love already. Bottom pick: Merkur jump hour. All good on paper, but in reality not very legible (to put it mildly). I learnt a new word today: temerity. Thank you!
I got 2 watches this year I'm really happy with, one js my san martin sn0142-G (the black dial, orange indices model, that thing is marvelous for the price) and the other Is my purple helix ascent, it's the most comfortable watch I own to wear and the dial still is stunning to look at
It has been great content all year around, I enjoy these videos ,yeah, you are correct. Some companies are just lazy, looking forward to this coming mostly Seiko, I bought this year, the baby Alpanist 38mm light green 70 hours of power reserve, that's it seiko some years good and some are bad ...Merry Christmas to you brother and your family, love and peace..all away from St George Utah.....
Jody! I've been out of town for awhile and finally got home to open my Ascent Orange Fume on Jubilee. You knocked it out of the park! Stunning, comfortable and "just right". Had to wear my Aqua Terra today just to remind it that I still love it..😂 I seem to have received a bonus blue enamel Ascent as well though. I don't believe i paid for two, so I'm unsure how to proceed.
My 2024 of watch related material began in Feb with the Origin delivery, and has ended with my Ascent. Erebus is kicking goals and winning hearts. I love both of my purple beasties. Well done Steve and Jody. 🎉
this year is all novelty. vintage pocket watches. marriage watch. numitron watch. apple ultra. 2 Chinese tourbillons edit: the question is, can I get a gold Bulova super seville before the year end. hard to find bulova in retail stores nowadays at least for me in singapore
Many thanks for the round up. My tandorio sterile face GMT still looks great and keeps excellent time (steady 5 sec gain/day). Thanks for the recommendation, a lot of watch for £46 delivered.
Seiko are wise not to confuse their supporters by wacky and weird every year. They don’t have to be revolutionary all the time. Evolution of their excellent ranges makes a lot of sense. I think videos that start out as needing five of anything always scratch around and make stuff up a little bit.
I think you nailed it. I like Seiko, don’t like the price. Citizen offers some cool watches at great price points. However, I am becoming increasingly convinced my next watch will be an Erebus Ascent or the Origin GMT.
Interesting list. I can’t really judge brands by yearly releases but I like watching lists like these because it gives a bigger picture of the brand. I do want a Seiko Arnie… but outside of that, there isn’t a Seiko I want.
Hey Jody, great fun as always! My biggest positives are surprisingly at the very low end: Addiesdive, Skmei and Sanda, which surpassed the no. 1 of my negatives by far in creativity and caught up on quality. So my negatives are Casio - yes, sorry - and Seiko. Oh, and Tissot as well. Cheers from Germany and have a wonderful Christmas! 🤍❄️
Seiko is getting expensive indeed. The one model I am really happy with though, is the SUR319. It is a 36mm quartz watch with a sapphire crystal. It is absolutely beautiful. Very similair to a SARB, but much slimmer, and it always runs when you need it. Easily one of my favorite watches.
Agree on Seiko. Was looking for an every day dive watch around or under £1k and kept getting drawn to their designs but put off by the specs/price ratio.
Merry Xmas to you and yours mate. Thanks for a year of entertainment and education. Of all the great stuff I have enjoyed on this channel I have to say. That t-shirt is right up there 😂. Irn Bru is F*****G delicious stuff. Haha thanks again Jody, all the best for the new year 🤘🤘
Hi Jodie, have you thought about putting together a list of all the Aussie micros? Maybe put on a show with all those brands similar to what Time & Tide did in London for the poms? Just a thought mate.
Thank YOU, Jody for another stellar year of fun shows. That Monstera behind you just seems to get more lovely with age! Best to you and the fam for 2025.
Da la impresión de que Seiko quiere centrarse en Grand Seiko , y las líneas más populares irlas retirando o subiéndolas de nivel vía precios artificialmente
I bought my first automatic watch this year which is a Seiko5 and I absolutely love it but I don’t think I’d by another the way their prices are going!
In my quest to find a decent digital watch with a sapphire lens, I ended up with my first ever smart watch, a Galaxy 6 classic, strange that it has curbed my spending on watches as I have not felt the urge to buy anything else , I can just change the face when I choose, still keeping a look out but I have not cracked yet, it has changed my watch buying habit for the better, it feels good to be off the bandwagon.
Jody, the thing I enjoyed most in the watch world over the last 12 months was at last, meeting you in person at the wind-up watch show in New York City in October York City
Great recap and no lies detected. I guess the good news for Seiko is the quality complaints died down… because we were too busy ripping their face melting prices. The Kith collab was about as cringy as the Swatch moon fiasco from a few years ago.
Citizen here in NZ shot themselves in the foot by only making the Forza or whatever titanium intergrated bracelet watches available in large numbers so few if any shops had any. Hence only a few enthusiasts bought one from Spain or Australia! I am loving my Namica which arrived a few weeks ago after a long wait from early 2024. Not even my Japanese friends have seen a Neo Tokyo dial with Kanji characters on it. Plus 3 straps & in Ti it's super comfortable in the summer heat.
Mostly agree with this recap. On the last bit, maybe useful here to mention that Stowa beat NOMOS to the Bauhaus design by about 50 years. That watch - the Antea Classic - is still in its catalogue.
At the macro level, I agree with you that 2024 was lackluster at best. However, it seems like at least once a month I stumbled on some new micro that made my “will buy in future” list! I couldn’t pass up the Magnum PI watch in solar nor the Phoebus GMT. The only reason I didn’t buy the red dial Ascent is Bulova beat you to the Black Friday sales and I couldn’t pass up the red dial Surveyor. 2024 will go down as a year that Citizen and Bulova made moves to steal some affordable watch space left void by Seiko.
What makes the Vario Empire GMT even special is that you might see the "Made in Japan" sign in the site regarding the watch, and you'd assume, "oh, this is a marketing thing, it's clearly just the movement, the watch has to be made in China.", but no, they're not pulling an Omega here, EVERYTHING about the Empire is made in Japan, specifically in where Citizen also makes its cases. It's the reason why it's selling for more than $600 each.
I hunted the last blue Baby Alpinist in the country. Apparently, when saving up for a watch, you have to be quick with the Japanese. And that's it. I don't have a big collection, I decided for a Seiko, one Seiko - that Seiko.
Waiting on that Erebus field watch…and the Aussie micro scene seems to be ascendant, Peter Kotsa gave several of them a mention in his latest episode as well. Very cool that it’s picking up momentum, especially given the challenges which you mentioned. On the negative side, who even cares about Seiko anymore? Need a great value Japanese watch? Cool, buy an Orient or a Citizen. Too easy. Have my Ray II Raven on my wrist as I type. Lovely piece for the princely sum of USD160 on Jomashop four years ago. Love your end of year roll-ups, great fun.
You did a big miss this year the accurist origin automatic .....im in love with this 100m waterproof, integrated bracelet look, Sapphire and for me a beautiful blue dial
Literally a decade ago. Prices rise, and on the whole there are plenty of cheap watches about at better than expected prices.
Totally agreed! I hope Seiko is taking notes.
I love this. Treasure that watch brother.
Citizen Eco-Drive is the best. Have several, my oldest one is almost 17 years old and just rock solid (wore it sailing racing for like 10 years, got plenty of scars and never missed a beat).
You need to get The Citizen they are amazing
My Citizen collection grew with a few during 2024
Mine as well , the favorite was the Blue Citizen ' Orca ' , its special .
Great take.
Me too, they are amazing.
What models did you all pick up? I replaced a lost Nighthawk
Jody, I would love for you to do a video on the best affordable thin and ultra thin watches in quartz and automatic. Great content as always.
In early 2024 I bought the first watch that I've ever truly fell in love with...a Bulova Lunar Pilot.
Nice!
Me to. I really love this watch.
I've been very pleased with mine; enjoy!!
@@michaelredding6219 I am too...wear it more often than even my Grand Seiko
@@hawkeye454 i get it; there are some watches that just seem to keep landing on your wrist because they just feel right 🤷🏻♂️
I finally broke down and purchased a Casio Duro this year. I liked it so much I bought a 2nd. Got two high quality bracelets and saphire crystals for them and they look great. Incredible value for the money. Now probably my favorite watches.😊
Casio Duro is incredible value, 200m water resistance and looks great for the price as well.
Over seiko. Prices are insane.
I work at Costco and we got in their Seiko 5 Sports with icy blue dial. Even at $350 CAD, I think it's too expensive.
You buy Seiko's today for the dial or the history ... Not the specs or value.
I am curious if there will be a Seiko bubble at some point?
There are still many great Seiko watches but many that are not so great. I still think the Turtle or Mini Tuna are great dive watches. The cocktail time range of watches provides amazing value. The win for me here is the Irn-Bru tee :) love it
Agree with the Ascent being number 2. I love mine and the quality is second to none.
For the price*
How is the lumed?
A great year for Vario IMO. I ended up buying that green Empire GMT you highlighted in this video plus two Vario Versas. High quality, beautiful watch with two separate movements. My Seiko hangover was my pickup of the Seiko Recraft SNKN37 that ships with zero, nada, nothing lume. My fav pickup of my 100 new watches this year was my Aragon 45mm red dial diver with tritium.
100 new watched?? thats crazy!
Aragon needs more attention!
He has more than two hands@@jacobtuck6735
To be fair, the ascent may actually deserve to be here. That was a genuinely solid offering
Nice to see Vario getting a mention

Jody's all over Citizens right now, as well as positioning his own brand as a replacement for Seiko, so I'm not surprised he's dragging them.
what exactly the new Samurai are you talking about?
@Zeratsu SRPL11K etc.
@@kostasz3050 oh, you mean mini samurai? They put a fackin hardlex there! It's a goddamn deal breaker for me!

To end on a positive note, any Timex, Citizen or Seiko is infinitely better than any fashion brand or smartwatch.

Citizen definitely kicked Seiko’s ass this year, for sure. The Erebus Ascent in Neon Pink blows me away everytime I see it. I missed the pre-order special but definitely need to order one in the near future. Great job, as always, Jody.
Watched this one with the wife this morning. She’s a big fan of Citizen especially watches with an Eco drive movement. She obviously has good taste.

Proper roasting of Seiko. Anxious to hear what you think of their new Aquaracer-esque divers.

vintage pocket watches. marriage watch. numitron watch. apple ultra. 2 Chinese tourbillons

I love that Erebus ascent . Cool.
My 2024 was going after the good seikos from the past few years at discount prices. I'll wait a few years to pounce on those nice 2024 citizens.
I forgot to mention that I hope to add a 41mm erebus ascent to my collection!
Yeah I have a few older Seiko's on my list but zero newer ones.
I hunted the last blue Baby Alpinist in the country. Apparently, when saving up for a watch, you have to be quick with the Japanese. And that's it. I don't have a big collection, I decided for a Seiko, one Seiko - that Seiko.
A SARB needs to be reissued. But can Seiko do it for less than $500?
@@bngr_bngr No. This isn't how business works.
