  • Learn the basics of knitting with this simple pattern called the Basic Dishcloth. It is simple and using only the Garter Stitch as the technique. In other words, it's just the knit stitch back and forth using cotton yarns.

Aww, i see you finally took the plunge into knitting. I basically learned crochet from your tutorials a little over a year ago, then this spring I taught myself how to knit (first project was a shadow cable baby blanket! ) now i am learning the knitting machine!!

I am a crocheter who wants to learn to knit. I would like to see more knitting tutorials where a basic pattern is actually being followed. This would be helpful to learn to read knitting patterns!!!

A tip - when using circular needles warm the extension either place them in warm water or use a hair dryer to loosen them up.

Does it matter what sort of cast on you use? I mean, does it affect the project, or is it just each persons preference when they write a pattern?

Hi Mikey. I am learning to knit with you and I absolutely love the challenge. What size knitting needles are you using for the dishcloth?

I think my favorite cast-on is the crocheted cast-on. Makes a stretchy and neat edge.

With the cables on, if you put the needle between the stitches before you tighten it up, it will be easier and your stitches will be more even.

Wow, you're brave to start with COTTON. It's super hard to do for a beginner; stretchy knit is much easier to work with.

Have the joins on the Boye circulars improved? I haven't bought them in a few years as I found the join very rough and yarn would get caught.
I like using straights for Dishrags, no real reason though.

Does it matter is you want to use a different cast on ? Will it mess up the pattern ? I prefer the long tail cast on

I couldn't do the cable cast on, so basically knitted on my cast on row. Will that affect the pattern at all? Also, what color of Sugar and Cream is used for the photo on the pattern? Thank you!

Thank you for trying to teach us knitting, but I can see that it is a really painful and laborious craft for you. Maybe you should stick to crochet, which you are a master at.

It's the camera set up that isn't working. I have to replace the equipment as my equipment doesn't allow my left hand to have much movement without banging into the tripod and camera equipment. I cannot see the work from my point of view. So I have to look through a monitor.

No one is perfect at first. I rather like that Mikey is making mistakes, and that he's willing to be awkward on camera and share his learning process with us. It makes me feel like less of a clutz when I'm fumbling around in much the same way.
