I am 73. I knitted this pattern for years until about a year ago my dish cloths began to look wanky. I just couldn't figure it out until I found this tutorial. Thank goodness I know where my mistakes are because I love knitting mindlessly this pattern and then giving it as a gift. People never fail to appreciate it.
Hi Deleana! I'm so glad the tutorial was helpful! I agree, people always love receiving these for gifts. I always have one or two in the works, just to have them on hand. :)
I love knitting on just about everything. I love knitting washcloths and giving 3 or 4 wrapped up with a very nice bar of soap. Every person I’ve given them to loves them and mention that they would love more. I was in my Drs office last week and she asked me what I was knitting. I told her and she had to feel it. I go back in August so I’m trying to get some worked up for her. 💜 Thank you so much for your great video.
Thank you. I am new. I am not a knitter but I do crochet. I have tried learning several times over the years. I always quickly get aggravated and return to crocheting. 😂 I am not going to give up this time (I hope). Love this pattern.
I hope this video was helpful! Enjoy learning to knit! I mostly stick to simple projects like dishcloths, scarves, and hats, as I don't seem to have the patience for more involved patterns. :)
Hi Joy, Thank you for sharing this. I found it so interesting. I know how to crochet but have always found knitting a challenge. This seems like a a manageable project, so I am going to give it a try. Thanks for the inspiration. Love, Mary❤️😘❤️
Eversince I watched your video tutorial, I've made a whole lot of these! I'll be giving them as gifts to friends & family for the holidays this year. ❤
Dear Joy thank you so much for sharing your pattern, it is lovely. I love the calmness and relaxation knitting gives me and I shall really enjoy doing this pattern. Carol ❤
Thank you for sharing this video and the easy to follow instructions.I love this pattern and each time I complete one, I feel so happy. Even more , when those to whom I gift these dish cloths request for one more!
Hello Joy! Thank you so much for having the patience to make this video for us beginners :) I especially appreciated how you wrote out the 'recipe' for the rows. I was able to pause on that and go through the steps. I made my first knitting project because of this video (& it was for practical reasons as I needed some dishclothes and am self isolating!) Keep up your efforts :)
A former neighbor shared this pattern with me when I first taught myself how to knit many yrs ago. I love it & have made several gifting some and used personally. Is one of my most valued patterns. Making 1 now as I came across your video. I subscribed right away. Looking forward to other projects with you.
OMG, This shows the best bind procedure and one I feel like can do. I have tried many only to lose the dishcloth due to bind off errors. This great and I feel like I have learned. very patient Not saying others I have seen are bad but this the best for me. Thank you so very much.
Thanks for sharing. I'm a beginner and I will be attempting to make these. I love the white as well .You made it look so easy .Hope mine turns out as good as yours .
Hi I recently found your Chanel. Thank you so much for this I am a total beginner I can do the knit stitch so I will try this soon, you are a very good teacher.
@@ArtfulHomemaking Hi joy, so I just finished making my very 1st one, it is officially the 1st thing I have ever knitted, I tried it a couple of weeks ago and made a mistake. To some it may seem like no big deal but I am so proud of myself, thank you for the video xx Audra
Thank You Joyce, I really like this dishcloth. I'm so happy that I was able to find it. I'm looking forward tomorrow. I'm starting to make my hoping they look as beautiful as yours. I really going to enjoin making them, now I can start giving them away for birthdays and occasions. Thank you so much Joyce God bless you and your family have a wonderful and blessed Christmas. From your Admired. 🤗
Thank you! Yes, I find this way much easier and it feels more natural to me. My mom holds the needles the other way, and she prefers that, so I guess it just depends on what works best for each person. :)
Great video :) I am learning knitting by videos just like these and I am struggling when I make mistakes. I tend to rip it out because I don't know how to fix yarn over mistakes! -- one day I will find the perfect troubleshooting video for lace -- I have such an overabundance of cotton, lol -- I IWLL finish a dish cloth!
I made this and love it! Can I increase the stitches to make a dog blanket like this? Do I just keep going instead of starting the decrease at 45 stitches?
Love this pattern and video! Thank you! I have one question--is it important that it be 45 stitches? How do you possibly enlarge the pattern? What is the scale I would need to use?
So glad it was helpful! I've also made this pattern in a rectangular shape, which makes more of a dishtowel. I have a blog post with instructions for that here: www.artfulhomemaking.com/kitchen-towel-knitting-pattern/ I haven't made anything larger than the dishtowel (which is rectangular instead of square), but you could make it larger. You would just keep increasing until it's about the size you want and then decrease. I haven't tried it (and I'm not sure about the scale), but others have told me that's how they've made blankets or afghans with this same basic pattern.
Repeat your increase row until you have 50 stitches on your needle to get a larger dish Cloths. Very Pink Knits has a TH-cam video where she covers this vintage dishcloth and has a written pattern available for both the square and rectangular version. May I also suggest that you use as short of needles that will work and are comfortable. Working this pattern on long needles is torture. 😁
I'm sorry to hear that! Mine are never perfect, but since they're just dishcloths I don't worry too much about it. I view this as more of a utilitarian pattern.
Mine too! It’s all wonky shaped and like Swiss cheese. But I know why I have extra holes. I got distracted a few times. My issues is the last bind of stitch. Her video cuts out and jumps to her stitch off needle. So I’m stuck with last bind off stitch still on needle lol
If you watch starting at 10:23 , it shows that last stitch on the needle, and you simply pull your needle out of that stitch (keeping the loop that was left), and then follow the instructions for cutting the thread and pulling it through that loop (that last stitch) that was left. This binds off the stitches. Hope that helps!
I love this pattern so much! I have made two so far! I am now wanting to make a hand towel that matches, but I'm not sure how to go from a square to a rectangle other than doing a normal eyelet edge on hand towel with garter stich. Then, it would not be diganal like these are. Do you have any suggestions on how to tweak this pattern or another kind of pattern that would match?
So glad you love it, Morgan! I have a couple of other options for this pattern on my blog. Here's a coaster pattern, which is just a smaller square: www.artfulhomemaking.com/knitted-coasters-pattern/ But I know you're looking for a rectangle, so here's the pattern I created to make a rectangular towel shape: www.artfulhomemaking.com/kitchen-towel-knitting-pattern/ I've been planning to make a video to go with the towel, as there have been several questions about it, but haven't had a chance yet. Hopefully sometime this year!
Hello! To increase to 45 stitches, repeat Row 2 until you have 45 stitches on the needle. Row 2 is: k2, yo, k to end of row If it would be more helpful to see the instructions in writing rather than trying to follow the video, you can find those here: www.artfulhomemaking.com/knitted-dishcloths/
I have been making this pattern for many years. I found that using a 16" circular needle was easiest. Also like knit picks Dishie cotton yarn for their color and smoothness. I do not work for them! Make these mostly as wash cloths to go in the Operation Christmas Child boxes.
Hello Joy, I just finished my first dishcloth but it was quite small so I am curious as to what size needles & yarn you used here. I used 4.5m needles & Bernat Handicrafter cotton. I have seen a couple other videos here where they have used the Bernat cotton. Could you advise me on increasing the stitches can it be done using more than 45 stitches making the cloth larger. Sorry I like you video & I used to do the cloths years ago. I am an experienced knitter (hard to believe I am sure) because this is so easy. So in a nutshell should I be using another type of yarn or larger needles or both? I would appreciated whatever you can advise. Many thanks for a very friendly & easy to follow video.
Hello! Thank you so much for your kind words. I used US size 7 needles and Lily Sugar 'n Cream cotton yarn. Using larger needles will make the dishcloth larger. Here is the exact yarn I used: amzn.to/3rw7T76 (this is my affiliate link). I hope that helps, and thanks so much for watching!
Hello, thank you for sharing this pattern. I've knitted this in the past without issue, however this time the lace pattern, or specifically the holes it creates are larger on the decrease than on the increase. My yarn is 100% cotton, size 4 australian needles. Its happened twice now. I'm very careful making sure I've followed the instruction properly as i have knitted it many times before. I'm frustrated, any suggestion as to what might be happening?
You're welcome! I'm sorry to hear that the lace pattern isn't turning out. I'm not sure why that would be, as I haven't experienced that before. So sorry I can't be of more help.
That does tend to be a feature of this pattern. I've read different things you can do to make it come out more evenly, but I just leave mine because they're just dishcloths. But for gift giving, you could try blocking them (google "blocking knitting").
I just started. My dishcloth ended up a wonky shape but I figured it’s good practice. Video is good but I have the last stitch on my needle still because your video cut what you did with the very last stitch. It jumps from the last stitch to the loop. How did you get it off the needle? I tried taking it off and it wasn’t finished so I had to put back on needle and restitch to make last stitch again and afraid to take it off. What am I missing? Thanks
Hi Cheryl! If you watch starting at 10:23 , it shows that last stitch on the needle, and you simply pull your needle out of that stitch (keeping the loop that was left), and then follow the instructions for cutting the thread and pulling it through that loop (that last stitch) that was left. You start with 4 stitches, then you increase until there are 45 stitches on the needle. Then you start the decrease row. Then after Row 4, you bind off the 4 remaining stitches. Here are the written instructions if that would be more helpful: www.artfulhomemaking.com/knitted-dishcloths/

When you use a 6 mm knitting needles how many stitches do you put on
The number of stitches stays the same, regardless of the needle size. So, with smaller needles, the dishcloth will be slightly smaller.
@@ArtfulHomemaking is it still 45 stitches
