    I've seen someone (probably MD) use baking soda as an accelerator. I haven't tried it because I don't glue my hardscape together, just plants on rocks, and it leaves a white color, but if it's in a hidden place it works.

    • @thesmallscape
      @thesmallscape  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Interesting! The great thing about this duo is no white residue! I’m just thrilled. 😁

      I watched a video with the myth busters guy and the baking soda was the strongest bond that he was able to get...he used one other type that was an aerosol, but the third one was the accelerant used here - definitely worth trying to get some interesting scapes and if that doesn't leave a white residue, definitely worth the price! (and if all CA glue is essentially the same...you can probably use whatever "cheap" glue you want :)...)

      the baking soda basically makes it cook instantly into plastic! if it wasn't such a small amount, you'd definitely notice the heat/smoke. there are lots of chemistry videos to show it off!

    This is interesting. An easy way a lot of us use other those if super glue is spritz with water is sets instantly. As for the look of it, you can crush some Aqua soil in your fingers and cover the glue to hide it or you can use sand. Also the glue rocks more solid, we use something as simple as paper towel, wedge between 2 rocks, wood, rock etc. put liquid super glue on the paper towel and it almost instantly forms a super strong bond. Can also use cotton balls, filter floss. It chemically reacts to almost weld the two together. It’s a god send when doing IAPLC tanks or AGA for competition.

  • @rodneywalat8956
    @rodneywalat8956 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    One other tip or caution that I should mention. Oftentimes in the chemical reaction that takes place between the superglue and accelerater, high heat is produced which might burn/damage the rhizome of your annubias. Also, if, say for example, you are using your long fingernail to hold something in place while the glue sets up, you might feel the heat rise up and burn your finger for a second or two.

  • @rodneywalat8956
    @rodneywalat8956 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Two tips for you. I have had some success in times past by spraying one surface with accelerater, and applying superglue on the other then allowing the 2 to come in contact. Just make sure that when you spray you turn it away from the area that you are working in ,otherwise if there are any microscopic droplets in the air that you can't see, and they get on the surface that you apply the glue, it might cause the the glue to immediately set. The other tip I have, is to experiment with using the accelerater on your favorite Gorilla glue super gel. I have had success mixing accelerater and superglue from different manufacturers.

    • @rodneywalat8956
      @rodneywalat8956 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Kerry Pitt. No, I have not. I was not even aware that there was such a formula. Based on past experience, I would experiment with the degrees of wetness on the surfaces to be joined, that is, thoroughly saturated or puddled or else slightly damp (almost dry).

    Thank you for the info, I will definitely check this out. I have found that gorilla glue brand of super glue gel is consistently slower, like A LOT slower, and often needs a little cotton or TP to create the bond. The genuine super glue brand however is faster, but still requires the bonding material for larger/heavier items. Also, no matter how I try to cover it or be careful, I end up with some white streak or something in plain view.

    I'm new to this and have been watching heaps of videos. I've been using regular liquid super glue and cotton, which is called cotton wool where I live. It works great, dries almost instantly, works best for wood and rocks. Sprinkle a little matching sand over the glue so you can't see it, if it wont be covered with plants. I don't like spending any more money than I have to, so I'm not buying anything I don't need. Where I live, everything is way more expensive than the US, and often not even available here.

    This is commonly used in the radio control and modeling hobbies. I've never needed it in those cases because its usually for tight fitting clean dry parts and the superglue sets too fast for me with those parts. For loose fitting connections (like rocks and driftwood) the thickness of the glue is the problem so the accelerator would be helpful.

    When glueing plants to drift wood or drift wood to drift wood does the wood need to on the dry side. I tried your original brand of super glue to stick moss all over a nice piece of drift wood....what a disaster!! I glued more of myself than anything!!

    The regular super glue you have laying around and just add baking soda. The poors man accelerator but it works like magic as well.

    Not the last one! I've been gluing moss to hardscape today and was wishing there was a way to to do this'll without leaving the white visible. Wish I'd seen this video last week!

    I've heard about this products before but was hesitant to use it because I didn't know if it was safe for aquarium livestock. I will try it now. Well, not now as in this instance, but you know what I Mean. LOL Thanks for sharing.

    I have a Question -- what is the Shelf Life of both those Products?? I've had many brands of Super Glues since they arrived on the Market -- and most every one except Loctite, would harden in the container every time I needed some. Into the Trash Can . Loctite has yet to fail me -- I've had it sit for months on my worktable and it was always in like new condition. Thanks for any replys.

      No, I have not! But I do plan on extensively testing this in different combos. It’s fascinating ☺️

    Ya use some cotton ball liquid superglue then just a hit of baking soda. I use an old ketchup bottle. I only use the gel glue to attach plants.
