These would be great if you are breeding nano fish and needed a grow out tank. Doing daily water changes would be very easy.
I bet if you used a larger gauge of gravel, you could even go above the "faucet" and it would still drain.
You could also probably use some tubing to snorkel up above the substrate.
YASSSSSSS!!! Can I get a 🙌
Or basically just put some larger gravel by the spicket and then soil in the rest if you wanted a small planted something, it would essentially be a french drain
Or if you for some reisonderdelen need smaller substrate you could cover it with some windowscreen mesh
What an awesome idea! I never even thought to use a container like that for fish. At the beginning of this year I needed a couple small hospital tanks to treat a couple fish. These would have made the water changes way easier and much less stress on the fish. I’m getting a few of these in different sizes. Thank you for sharing this. You earned a thumbs up from me and my subscription
I have used these for scuds and daphnia cultures. The spout doesn't dispense the live food, usually they are fast enough to swim away, but its good for water changing.
It's perfect for brine shrimp since they ate attracted to light.
If you use gravel, you could conceivably fill above the spout. I hope you show this in use in an upcoming video.
I initially was uncertain but it's definitely a clever idea. Especially for a hospital tank that you need to do water changes on every day.
I use a glass jar with a spout for my moina culture. I use a net when I drain and refill with green water. Super handy.
That would be handy for temporarily housing my bettas when I rescape their tanks! (Which I do fairly often lol). Right now I just put them in a Tupperware container so this would be a nicer little hotel for them!
I’d love to see a tank that’s designed with a funnel bottom so all the poop falls down the “drain” with water changes… 😂
🙌🙌
So I've got a 1 gallon glass one from Hobby Lobby about 6 months back or so. I filled it with salt water I made using Instant Ocean with a specific gravity of 1.025, dropped some baby brine shrimp that I hatched and now they're completely self-sustaining. I'm going to try to drop some newly hatched Amano shrimp zoes in and see if they'll grow out in there. Cheers! ~Ron SUBSCRIBED!
Oooh! Good luck! (And thanks for reminder to check on me of my fave stores, Hobby Lobby)! 😊
Great idea!!!
I have a couple of those rectangle ones - minus the spout and handles - that I use as hospital tanks. I drilled a hole in each lid to add a small airstone (at very low air pressure).
I've been looking at these just for the container itself not even thinking to use the spout to do water changes. That's genius! I've been wanting to do shrimp tanks.
I use these for brine shrimp hatcheries
Perfect. You could put in an undergravel filter high enough so that the gravel & plants are above. Then you can drain all the excrement that filters through the gravel by opening up the drain. Nice thick substrate with the underground filter space to drain the excrement.
I love how creative you are Joanna. Yes, It does seem like a good idea. I am currently using a 30g tote to breed endlers, only 20g of water. I will keep this idea in mind. Thanks for sharing.
I have used the 3 gallon glass ones for years. I bought them on sale at the end of the summer and I still use 3 of them. I have a thin layer of sand and plants in tiny pots in the bottom and a sponge over the tap/spout inlet. I also use a nano sponge filter and the smallest Eheim preset heater fits perfectly.
I use them in my guppy and molly breeding projects. If I need to separate a favorite female for a week or so until I decide which male to pair her with. I also sometimes let a female give birth in one and raise fry for just one week. For the first week of fry raising it's handy so they can find food easily and no larger fry or fish chasing them. After a week they can hold their own in a larger grow out tank with older fry and even adults if there are hiding places. Using smaller tanks and containers like this has more than doubled the amount of guppy and molly fry I get compared to any other method I've tried.
I wouldn't use them to keep fish in long term and I wouldn't recommend newbies use them because you really have to understand cycling and testing in such a small amount of water.
You’ve used for years?! 🙌All great points!! Thanks for sharing, Matt. 😊
i definitely thought about that stuff for brine shrimp hatcheries
Ooooh, that's a good idea for sure
Great idea for a betta tank.
Good tip, Joanna. I'll keep this in mind. Thank you!
There must be lots of ways these could be used in the aquarium hobby, thanks for sharing
This would be great for a live daphnia culture. Another one could be used for growing green water to feed the daphnia.
This is a great idea for quarantining a small amount of fish when I bring them home from the shop before they go into my main tank. I can even dose them for parasites etc in a smaller volume of water. Well done Joanna.
Could also be used to separate babies so they don't get eaten. Great find!
Yes!! 🙌 hi Wendi ! 😊
@@thesmallscape Back at cha' Sorry I haven't been chatty. Summer bus'ness ya know!
Great idea. Even works for a resurrection jar for Father Fish shoal members ❤
Giving You a big YAA!!
I also use it as a “reserection jar”(local pond water & debri)..just drain the water in another container, unscrew cap/grab leaves&debri/ place
It into tanks..replace&top off H2O(fresh pond H2O&replenish w/leaves,etc)..Ready to go another 30days!
I can see that working. Attach a hose to the end of the tap, inside the container, and you can increase the height of that "syphon", allowing you to put more substrate. Cover the end of the hose with a net and you can protect your shrimp or sick fish. Not a bad idea for temporary tanks.
Love it for hospital tank. I do deep substrate minimal water changes in my tanks, so it wouldn't work for anything like that. But honestly great idea for hospital.
Oh it's a definite YEAH. I have seen these at several stores, in all shapes and sizes and made with plastic and glass. The glass ones can be heavy, oompf. There's a 3 gallon that I've had my eye on for a beta. I just haven't given into it yet. YET. Oh and Joanna, my dollar tree DOES have the 3 and 5 dollar aisles now. I could've cried. 😢. But the 3 and 5 dollar prices are still really good prices to. It's just sad to see how inflation affects everything. Oh well, I think I'm gonna plan a beta tank. 😊 Thanks for the great ideas that you share with us! Happy Tankin'.
They work well for guppy fry if you keep your house warm my grandmother used to have a few for grow outs.
I did a similar setup with a large cookie jar, but I love the idea of the spout for easy water change. For just one nano fish and some shrimp it has been great.
Along the built-in siphon route, on a lot of new tanks I setup these days, I’ll make a pre-primed siphon out of PVC that’s always ready to hook up a hose to and drain (and even fill) with. Just some PVC, a few elbows, a ball valve, a hose adapter and a pre-filter sponge. On nicer display tanks, you can paint it black with some Krylon Fusion and you barely notice it. You just prime it once, shut the ball valve and it’s always ready to siphon.
I've thought about using those 5 gallon water jug dispenser pump thing to use for water changes
these would be amazing for water changes! I don't like to dump my water in the aquarium so i usually use an airline tube to drip into the tank so these would be great for that!
Yea! Great idea. I would love some of these for little plant and shrimp tanks! So cute!!!
Never thought to use one of these. I’m going to pick one up this weekend. Thanks.
Loved the joy and excitement to show us the goodies! 😊
That’s so sweet of you to say! 😊
Great idea! I was looking for something to quarantine/treat new plants. The pet sore tanks are so expensive! Thanks!🌿🌿🐟🐟😁
Definitely has use as a Lake Tanganyikan fry grow out tank..👍👍
❤❤❤ Hi, Joanna, I love this idea! I’ll be playing musical tanks this summer, and I’ll be using different sizes of these! I’ve finally sorted my tanks and moved a 125 gallon a few weeks while our workers had some doors of to make it way easier to get them downstairs. These small tanks will be handy to move the fish who are smaller than most I put in 125s, sorta like the fish in the tank behind you (which I love, BTW!) Thanks for the idea! ❤
You could build a false bottom, similar to a terrarium.
3:19 I bought a glass "lemonade" jar just like that. I used it to dispense brine shrimp. Thought a net and water in the cup. This way keeps that water out of the tank.
Aight, guess I'm buying a beverage dispenser next time I go out lol.
Never thought about using such a container this idea is just brilliant.
Thanks for the great Tip!
I can see many possibilities 😀
Omg , you’re a flipping genius!!! I love it
I love multipurpose! And anything that makes water changes a bit easier. 👏 Happy Wednesday! 😊
Crazy? Yes! Excited? Oh yes! Great idea? You bet! Thanks.
lol! Thanks for the laugh 😊
The giant nano tank in the background looks like a giant snow globe that’s been shaken up. I like it.👍
Haha! 😆 yes!!!
This would be perfect for my fry
If your fish are small but the fish food is too big, like bottom feeder wafers of all sorts, the $8.00 CVS Health Pill Splitter with safety shield is a great way to safety cut fish food to more manageable sizes to create less waste in the aquarium and save money.
Coffee grinder 😝
@taz6122 That's a great idea for fish who feed off the top or mid level, but wafers need to keep their shape longer so the food doesn't get all over the aquarium. A pill splitter keeps a more consistent solid shape than whatever larger pieces are left at the bottom of the coffee grinder. A coffee grinder also may require more food to be cut up at the same time releasing the freshness quicker and possibly going stale faster if not all used at once. With a pill splitter, you can cut 1 wafer at a time.
Wow! That’s a great idea!! Thanks for sharing! 🙌
I have definitely seen videos of people who have set up drink dispensers as aquariums. I like your ideas of using them for quarantine or photo vessels though.
Fabulous idea for a hospital/ quarantine tank! That reminds me of a question that I wanted to ask. I am looking to put together a community tank (honey gourami, neon green tetras, and pygmy corys). How long do most people quarantine for? If you have different types of fish, would you add them to the cycled tank all at once, or is there an order you should follow by type? Thanks!
Its perfect for a gold fish juice 🤣🤣🤣🤣 you know im kidding right ?
you could also glue a screen to the inside hole so inhabitants don't go in the spout and get stuck...😢
Oh yes! Great point 😊
Yes, yes, love that!! Great as a quentine tank or emergency/hospital tank. (Gina)
A true Chicagoan!! Jewels!?? I love it. 😂😂
🙌😊
I’d love to see you do a live Q&A sometime!
Hi! We have done Saturday morning live streams here and there but you can always shoot me a question over on Prime Time Aquatics Wednesday night livestreams 8:-9:30 pm central. 😊
You always come up with the best, most practical ideas. I Love It.❤🎉
Thank you! 😊
Yeayyyy you added highlights to your hair … from ex model in Paris to you: you remind me of the actress in Love Story with Brian O’Neil … but add more méche d’or in your hair .. you’re beautiful
Now that's what ya call thinking outside the box. I see these things every year and never thought of them.. 👍👍
It was purchased in a box store. : (
Thanks much help! Great idea!👍
I love the way your mind thinks!
That is so cool Joanna. Thanks for sharing. I will be looking for them.
Yay! 😊
Excellent idea, this is excellent in an emergency. What else can you share on the topic of, "Thinking Out of the Box."
I have never thought of these this was!
Great idea love it
great video - interesting tip. Also - the tank in the background looks amazing ! Have you put more fish in there?
Thank you! Mmm…none since the diamond eye’s 😊
@@thesmallscape it's so effective - the sort of tank you could loose hours staring at !
Great idea, thanks!
definitely YAY
That is a very cool idea. ❤😊
i have used them for breeding barbs
great to have on hand
💚💚 Too cute.
Great idea!!
cool idea
Nice idea 👍🫶
I like the way you think. Brilliant!
Are they in the seasonal aisle at Jewel? I've used the glass jar ones for daphnia cultures.
Hi Cindy! Yes they are - by the summer goodies 😊
I was thinking about daphnia in one of those!😊
Brilliant!!!
It would be a bonus if when you open the spigot, just the poop would come out!😅
Exactly! 😆
Good idea
Wow!
never though of it good idea
Man Johanna where did you get that from> I cannot find them online anywhere
Hi! I got both from our local grocery store, Jewel 😊
@@thesmallscape hum well we don't have one of them in Texas.
