I do use my mini 4 for setting the broad location that I am at. Usually because I am up fairly high. I don’t need an ND as you would not see the motion blur. So most of the time I will use a motion, blur, plug-in, and speed up the video by speed ramping I do wish it had a adjustable aperture, but I guess that’s what the Mavic series is for
This is a great idea on taking your drone and multi tasking with it. By the way what tripod are you using and why? And what tripod would you recommend when using the mini 4 pro which I have. Thanks for your video. It gives me some ideas when I travel.
I’ve been thinking about the Mist filter for a few months now and finally pulled the trigger on a Freewell Snow Mist filter. It arrived today so, this evening, I took it out for a spin on my drone to capture the Illuminations. Got to say, with the limited testing, I’m impressed with the results. I may even keep the filter on full time. Still not used any of my DJI ND filters. I don’t see the need for them when I’m up in the air. I was a bit shocked at the price of £30 for a piece of glass half the size of my little fingernail. It was also good to watch this episode again. I learned a few more tips as well.
Great video. I'm new to the mini 4 pro so everyday is a school day. What mic are you using Ian and what is it connected to? Phone? Software? Thanks in advance.
Loved this video, man! Your shots are cinematic and i love em. Just bought the kit too and im looking forward to using some of these filters. I made a grave mistake, though. I inadvertently flexed my drone a little while using the Hinge dating app, and now I have a date reservation for Saturday, literally. Im just hoping she doesn't become too clingy, otherwise I may not have the time to test out all the new filters I'll be getting. You really do have to throttle it back when bringing up the drone in conversations like these. All the best!
Love the video Ian! Yes, Ted Nemeth rocks! I'm so glad you mentioned him here. I live in sunny Panama so I use ND filters all the time during the day, and take them off (or maybe an ND8 or 16) during golden hour. I have also adopted Ted's advice on shooting in auto and using filters to bring the shutter speeds down to catch some motion blur. I'm not sure about shooting in the the UK, with much more cloud cover than where I am, although during the winter (rainy season) we can experience quite a bit of cloud cover, but normally not all day.
Hello, Ian. My wife became very excited recently when she saw me doing a firmware update. In the heat of the moment I asked her how she would feel if I ordered the Split ND 4-Pack from Freewell for the Air 3. She screamed out, “Yes, yes, order the filters.” I don’t have the Mini 4 pro, but I do have the Mini 3 Pro-no ND filters for it. In about 30 minutes I am going to do the new firmware update for the Air 3. If I get lucky, maybe an all-day Freewell filter pack for the Air 3 will be on its way. (By the way, she refers to my DJI bags as “European Man Bags” and she finds them very attractive.)
Thank you for the review. I managed to get my freewell 16 pack to fit in the "man bag"... just. Definitely going to give the mist filter a try when I go to film the Clifton suspension bridge in Bristol.
I'd recommend Tintern Abbey if you come down this way as well. I filmed there with the mini 4, I made a video and put it on my profile. Nothing to your level mind.
Why don't you make a new video with your Mini 4 Pro and maybe the ND1000 to do Light trails photography like we do with our cameras on tripods ? Can it be done actually Ian ?
Very interesting video. I tend to guess what ND filter to put on my drones, hit and miss really. I doubt I would buy such a comprehensive set, i’m no pro. 👍
I do grade yea. Nothing over the top. I’ve got a colour grading tutorial already up. I’ll make one specifically for the mini 4 pro eventually. But the old tutorial still applies
With the ND filters, may I ask if there is any colour cast using them? I don't know what editing software you use however I use Davinci Resolve and one of its many features is cleaning up voice-over audio which can strip out background noise. Just a thought for challenging background oik's. 😇 Funnily enough, Ive had a Pro Mist filter for about a year but been too scared to experiment with it. I had a play a couple of weeks ago with the local trams. I'm still sat on the fence with the blooming effect. Maybe I need to recalibrate my perceptions of what they do visually?
I haven’t noticed any colour cast yet. But bear in mind this is a large set I’ve only had for a brief time Does the background noise clean up make the voice sound tinny at all? I’ve used Adobe. It’s great but sometimes I sound like a Dalek I like the mist filter but I get what you mean
@@Ian.A.Anderson Thankfully the audio sounds good, and you can dial in the background audio to make it sound more natural if required. Check out a few TH-cams on the feature. I suggest MrAlexTech for learning Resolve as painlessly and quickly as possible for editing.
@@frankinblackpool I assume the feature is just in the Pro version of Da Vinci? I use Final Cut but I could always use both programs for different reasons
Coming from Mini 2, I’ve never been in the position where I needed a ND filter over 16. I’m always shooting in the mornings and rarely in midday sun. Looking to get Mini 4 Pro but why are these NDs have high density values? Am I missing something with these packs that go up too ND 128 or 256?
Hi Stephen, yeah in your case morning shooting I probably wouldn’t buy this pack. It has a lot of darker ND filters. I’d probably either buy just an ND 16 or the All Day pack, that has the ND 4 and ND 8. You ask Santa for the SMIST 1/4 filter separately
Could be wrong here but the All Day pack does not include ND 4 or 8. Looking on their site they don't seem to make those two NDs for M4P. Is it down to the M4P having a aperture? @@Ian.A.Anderson
Thanks for this great video. I want to buy the small pack with 6 filters. In your video you say the ND is almost the same as the ND/PL in vertical mode (while shooting horizontal). Do you recommend the ND/PL over the ND so you have the benefit of both? Or is the ND/PL only recommended for flying over water and less usable for land shots? Greetz from The Netherlands.
To my naked eye they seemed similar. But this wasn’t a scientific test with natural lighting changing. Next time I message Freewell I’ll ask if they’ve tested in a studio environment- it’s a good question
16 pack fits just fine in the man bag on the opening side and a spare micro sd card in its packaging in the outside zip pocket. Alas it leaves no room for your dreadnought .... not that you needed it anyway ;)
I never understood this, yes, a lot of people say that low fps is nicer and a blurry picture is better... I guess I'm weird, I like it better when the picture is moving and not blurry, when I can stop every frame and make it photo... Maybe it's because I play a lot of video games ;)

One thing which is rarely, or possibly even never mentioned in drone ND filter YT videos is how to calculate the correct value of ND filter for the prevailing conditions. Now that really would be something for the ladies. Am surprised you can’t get that large filter case inserted into the DJI bag, maybe you’re just not used to squeezing something really big into tight spaces….
I think it’s always slightly a blag with figuring out ND filters. Do we factor in the top down shot, which will be darker… or expose for the image we see immediately? I’ll definitely use that one next time I go to a bar And yea I need go up my Bumble game don’t I
I bought a filter set and can’t see the value yet. For the average and even above average user it’s not going to matter much. I can see how professionals benefit in certain environments but not for an amateur like myself. Not only are they a hassle getting on and off ( I feel like I’m going to rip the gimbal off each time) , you have to guess which one will work best and burn through a battery launching and landing multiple times. Couple other things I noticed is they are sensitive to finger prints and they also cause weird reflections at times. I really don’t see the value for most drone pilots taking casual video for social media. One thang that is cool incidentally, I shined a higher powered blue laser through one of the filters that made a “star” effect and it looked sweet on the wall. Beyond that, they will sit there with the other crap I just had to have that never panned out. If you are on the fence with these, get some good 3 mile strobe lights instead lol!
