When I was young there was an older blind lady who lived down our dirt road. I would run to Miss Mary’s house every chance I got. I don’t know who needed who more. I loved listening to her tell stories of her growing up, as I helped her with sweeping up and snapping beans or peeling potatoes. I just couldn’t understand in some of her stories why people would hate someone because they had darker skin. She explained racism to me and I cried and she rocked me in her lap, patted my back and told me hush now. I told her I was sorry people were so mean to her, she hugged me told me to hush, it wasn’t my fault. When Miss Mary died I remember sobbing at the funeral, i kept hearing her say , “ you hush now, it’s alright.” I’m 51 years old and to this day I just can’t fathom how people can hate another human being because of their race, religion or sexual orientation. Judging others tells more about you than it does them. Judge others on their actions and nothing more. Everything we need to break unhealthy cycles of hate are within us.
