Perfect analysis of the character of strange. He goes from cold and emotionless thinking that nobody is unbeatable to thinking of himself as unbeatable. He became the opposite of what he started as and at the end he was afraid to realize he was on the brink of failure. All these strings he pulled to make his plan come true came to nothing in the end because he thought too highly of himself and prepared for everything but the possibility of batman actually being able to take him down.
I’d like to imagine Rocksteady took a kind of chess metaphor when it came to Hugo. The king always sits back and lets the other pieces do the work and only comes out once the other pieces are exposed. See the similarities?
Not only that, but when a king has to come to the centre of the table to play its because things look bleak and he is more exposed to failure than ever.

I honestly found it surprising to see Hugo Strange playing a major role in Arkham City. Even though you couldn’t see him throughout most of the game, you knew he was keeping an eye on you, along with everything that was happening. It was amazing to see everything he planned out, and you never knew who was really pulling the strings until much later down the line.

Which means he IS afraid of Batman, like you think he’s unstoppable and untouchable and when you finally confront him he’s nothing
HUGO Strange is such a good character and knows so much about Batman! He really understands him and why he does what he does. And wants to do whatever he can to break him. Kinda like Scarecrow.
I think my favorite part of the game was when you’re walking up to the Joker fight in the steel mill and before you make it to the door Strange announces Protocol 10 will commence in 10 minutes. It’s the very essence of Batman to me, there’s no way he can stop both villains at the same time, it’s over no matter what, but Batman still fights no matter what. Every time I play I get chills there
Great video man, this video gave me a different view on this scene and parts of the whole game as well. I’ve been playing Arkham City for years and never thought about how much Strange actually does.
Not really, sure batman wouldn't have known about protocol 10, but he'd have been in Gotham still, the moment the attacks happen batman is jumping into the bat wing and intervening, really if strange didn't bring him in he stops him much sooner as batman would be fresh and ready to fight and starting the fight on the top floor
@calebbarnhouse496 but he wouldn't know anything about the joker poisoning Gotham with his infected blood or about the Titan containers there... Not to mention Identity Thief would escape unnoticed, Jack Ryder and possibly Catwoman would die too.
You know that “I am your successor” line is way more potent when you listen to riddlers interview tapes. One of which implies that Hugo idolizes Batman and the desire to be the hero, that he actually has a Batman suit hidden away. One that he wears and questions if he’s even worthy to be the hero he thinks Batman cannot be.
I feel like nobody realised the subtle hint that he works for ra’s al ghul, in one of the predator sections before you confront strange. He says a line that ends with we are the future of Gotham, which is what ra’s said where he is the announcer before you meet talia and fight him
My favorite thing about Strange mentioning Protocol 10 in the beginning of the game is that it was a deliberate ploy by Strange to keep Batman in Arkham City, because he knew that so long as there was an ominous threat hanging over the city, Batman would never leave it be. Thus Batman would be compelled to remain in Arkham City right up until Protocol 10 started, all so Batman would be there to witness his victory. Also, I think a possible reason Strange was nervous at the end was overlooked. Remember what Strange said about being Batman's successor? I think part of the reason he was nervous in that scene was because he was anticipating Batman's reaction. I think he expected Batman to concede that Stange had won, admit that his methods of battling crime and corruption were superior, and for Batman to decalre that Strange was exactly that: Batman's successor, and hand the mantle over. I think Strange had a very similar opinion to Joker when it comes to Batman. He sees Batman as someone who's constantly fighting against his own violent tendencies because he believes that deep down, Batman WANTS to be like Ra'as Al Ghul, who can and will kill fornthe greater good. But Batman's mental conditionng and morals are too strong, so he can't break free of them. So Strange thinks that showing Batman that he can do whatnhe believed Batman always wanted to do but couldn't, by which I mean truly ERADICATE Gotham's criminal element, he would free Batman from these contraints and convince him to let Strange take up his mantle and calling. He almost came across like a college student handing in their thesis, or something like that. I believe that on a twisted way, Strange saw himself as a student of both Batman and Ra'as Al Ghul, one who had suprassed both his teachers and was nervously anticipating their reaction to his work, and was using his confidence and bravado to hide this. Making it that much more satisfying when not just one, but BOTH the people he saw as his mentors turned their backs on him, and his response tontat was tontake them both down with him, ensuring that only Strange's work would be remebered and completed.
I still think it's a problem that to get ultimate understanding of this story you need to do everything in the game: read all texts, hear all dialogues and tapes, complete all side quest. But still, it's one of the best Batman incarnation of all time. It's definitely best in the series
Mmm fair but it caters to casual gamers who just wanna go through i never felt that confused about anything in the city game and its also a batman game so u have to suspend ur belief of alot of the shit since its science fiction.
I reckon Hugo is arguably the most underrated villain in the series, everyone talks about Joker, complains about Riddler and talks about how underused the like of Two-Face, Deathstroke and Black Mask were, but I don't hear a lot of people talk about Strange, probably my second favourite Arkham villain, after Riddler
I didn’t think too highly of Hugo but it always got a little scared when he told us when Protocol 10 was to commence every in game hour. Thanks for being one of the few people who talk about Arkham City's plot and actually show how Hugo Strange was Arkham City's villain.
His voice is so entertaining but so intimidating at the same time. They need to do an Arkham shadow and make another game with him as the villain because he’s just so good
With Strange counting down until Protocol 10, it would be amazing if there was a game mode which actually put a time clock on how long you have until he activates it. So kinda like I Am The Knight in Origins, but instead it'd be a time limit on the whole game up until Protocol 10 activates. Probably not as many hours as he has, but perhaps cut down to 5 or something. Putting a lot of pressure on the player to not screw up.
Great videos you inspired me to challenge myself to complete all of the games on the hardest difficulty and if I die once I restart from the beginning of the series including challenge maps
Great video. Didn't even know Hugo's state when in Detective Mode honestly reminded me of my 1st playthrough on the PS3. Amazing retrospective on Hugo's story arc in the game 🤘🏼💯
An interesting bit of information that you will only get if you have read the batman comics is that Hugo Strange was experimenting with a drug similar to titan all the way back in his second appearance. This means that strange may have orchestrated the events of Arkham Asylum as well. Another interesting fact is that he had the opportunity to kill batman the first time they met but chose to torture him instead. A mistake that he also makes in this game.
U notice that freeze kinda gets less blue throughout the series kinda representing either his rage, in the cold cold heart he is super blue showing how much rage he has towards boyle and his enemies, in arkham city hes a bit lighter showing that hes shed some of his anger then in knight hes practically snow white showing hes lost his anger and is just desperate to get nora
He wasn't cocky in assuming the city council would approve. He KNEW they would... because, aside from Gotham being just about DONE with Batman & his Rogues shenanigans, most of them were probably in Ra's al Ghul's pocket or in on his plan.
@@SoyboyPeter Oh, hey there, Sauron! Nice seeing you outside of Mordor! Taking a vacation after 50.000 years or trying to get a Lantern Ring for yourself? more like he counts down the protocol ten because he needed enough chaos and armed criminals on the streets to tell council that he can't control it. would be rather silly if he went to council "i can't control the inmates" and the most shocking footage he had would be some random inmates setting trash on fire
12:28 On your way up to the tower when Strange is bragging that he'll drag Alfred through Gotham's streets and make him tell everyone Batman failed I think Strange is actually panicking and is just saying all that to seem in control.
I main problem with Hugo was that he felt like more of a background threat compared to joker and some of the other villains, he still had a presence, but it definitely was more of a looming threat instead of a active one, I don’t necessarily mind it, I just wish we got a few more scenes with him.
Imagine of protocol 11 was actually a backup if he ever lost where it makes everyone believe he died becuaee of batman but actually the expulsion was only from the windows making everyone including batman thinking he's fead
Possible, but I think that still left the plan up to chance. One of the council members is almost certainly Gordon, who we all know is incorruptible. He couldn't be paid off no matter how hard Strange tried, especially since he and Strange are at each other's throats constantly behind the scenes. With that in mind, the rest of the members would have had to vote with Gordon. There's always the chance the members he did bribe go against the agreement and still vote no.
That might be why he hired Deadshot, as a sort of insurance policy in the event that Protocol 10 was not approved. Though given his ability to arrest Bruce Wayne for peaceful activism, he was probably justified in thinking he had the council in his pocket.
Villains never learn kill the hero when you have the chance or they will stop you. Hugo is much like The Joker in that regard. Complacency or greed always takes villains down. This is even true in real life.
Hugo strange it’s such an underrated villain he was one of the first villains of Batman’s to figure out his identity him dying at the end if the game what kind of a waste of his character I feel like it could’ve been much more another thing that people don’t know about Dr. Hugo Strange is he’s a master manipulator that’s what makes him truly dangerous being able to get what he wants without having super powers
Every main villain in the Arkham games has gone down with Batman fist blazing. Asylum explosive punch. City beating up Hugo Origins beating up joker in church. Knight combo with red hood and Gordon
The cutscene in the bank where joker reveals himself in origins is my favourite moment in the franchise hand downs. It encapsulates everything great about a tense situation. I wont go in depth here but I have so much to talk about when it comes to that cutscene. For me, I like the way Hugo Strange was portrayed although I wish there was stakes when it came to Bruce's identity being revealed. All strange does is gloat a couple times and then...nothing. He threatens to reveal his identity to the public if Batman intervenes with Protocal 10 however Strange is informed that Batman is working to stop his plan MULTIPLE times but does nothing about it. I'm not sure what theyd do to add more stakes to the plot point so if they couldnt I would have preferred them to remove this altogether. The game wouldnt change whatsoever if Strange didnt know batmans identity. I dont know, it's just how I feel about it. I'm interested to see if people disagree.
Great video, though I don't think it's cocky for Strange to assume that the city council will vote in his favour. Strange has complete control of the mayor, and enough sway to arrest Bruce Wayne with no justification - it's not a stretch to think that the rest of the city council is under his thumb. Gordon was probably the only person there who wasn't dirty. The fact that they're preparing Arkham City clones in Metropolis and Keystone makes it seem to me that Strange's web of contacts goes way beyond Sharp.
Good video, but the direct quotes (like at 7:24 for example) felt a little out of place in the analysis sections. I think telling the story in your own words makes it flow smoother.
Quick comment. The "calm, nervous, terrified" conditions are based off heart rate. There is a possibility that he's not nervous, he's still cocky. He's just excited, as anybody would be. Planning something this elaborate, seeing it come to fruition, seeing the city in flames, and then seeing the batman, who is your idol/who you want to become, defeat your guards and then come face to face with you, would absolutely get his blood pumping.
This is possible, but not entirely true. Similar heart rates throughout the series have different conditions at times. Slow rates can also be injured, while higher ones can also mean crazed or agitated. It’s able to tell the difference between various conditions, despite similar rates.
@@ClownPuncher139 ohhh ok! I wasn't aware of this. I've only played Arkham City and I usually only see "calm, nervous, terrified, unconscious, deceased" thank you for clarifying
Ok this is my opinion here but I think Hugo strange should have been in Batman Arkham Night because it probably would have been a great comeback story and I think it would be great if he took control of militia instead of deathstroke (slade)

i have to praise rocksteady for putting strange in the spotlight, especially since before this, i'd only seen him in his one episode in B:TAS
Amazing video!
I main problem with Hugo was that he felt like more of a background threat compared to joker and some of the other villains, he still had a presence, but it definitely was more of a looming threat instead of a active one, I don’t necessarily mind it, I just wish we got a few more scenes with him.
Strange is definitely best antagonist of Arkham Series. Joker...well he is the Joker and he always will be perfect villain
Imagine of protocol 11 was actually a backup if he ever lost where it makes everyone believe he died becuaee of batman but actually the expulsion was only from the windows making everyone including batman thinking he's fead
Good video, but couldn’t Strange have paid off the city council members? That seems more likely than betting his entire plan on a vote.
Oh hey that was me at the beginning.
When Hugo Strange died,He should've had a Backup plan that being D.A.V.E cause it makes totally sense and that was a huge missed opportunity.
wise words, clownpuncher. wise words...
My favorite game ever
Good job with the video man
Love your vids homie, keep it up
This game has the greatest opening scene of any videogame ever
Hugo Strange is an underrated villain
One Arkhamazing Scene
Your vids are amazing
Hugo:
I have saved Gotham…
Batman:
Then save yourself.
Wow I just learned a bunch of stuff about the Arkham series.
I’m going to replay all of them! For the 388482983487478277738284847000th time
Every main villain in the Arkham games has gone down with Batman fist blazing. Asylum explosive punch. City beating up Hugo Origins beating up joker in church. Knight combo with red hood and Gordon
My only real problem with Protocol Ten is that main theme isn't play during it's all
Great analysis
Damn, man. It's hard to disagree
Beautiful video
Isn’t Hugo strange’s Voice actor also voices Count Dooku because it Kind of sounds like him ?
Strange's voice actor actually plays Cad Bane in the clone wars. He does play Dooku, but only in Battlefront 2 and a few other places
7:38 I feel stupid for not knowing u could just slide into a vent instead of mashing A.
So in conclusion, strange is pretty strange
Every main villain in this series is well crafted and properly written
Joker
Bane
Hugo Strange
Scarecrow
It was all according to plan
I forgot how many times I said this but can you beat batman arkham city without sprinting/running
Btw I will never give up
Can you beat city without upgrading?
@@fresh10 I beated asylum except for the necessary ones
No, you need to slide sometimes and you need to run to slide.
@@retronoodles_but_cooler he could use glitches to skip by going in new game Plus
He would of gotten away with it if he never kidnapped bruce wayne.
I think deadshot would still have been paid. Remember that Hush is in Arkham City.
Ra’s never to return to the Arkham saga… season of infamy: am I a joke to you
Great scene.
7:40 Wtf you can seriously do that with vents? How tf have I never known this? Is my entire life a lie?
How do you slide?
You hold A or X and hold the right trigger.
Theory: Strange said he won because when Batman dies he'll take his place that's why he was taunting Batman the entire game saying he won and was untouchable because he was gonna replace Batman after dying during protocol 10
I love this game 🎮🎯
Can we do “ I am Vengeance I am the Night I AM BATMAN! For next video
