Agreed, absolutely! It is a dynamic that is often left underexplored. They started to remedy that in the Nolan trilogy, but it really is perfected here. As noted in the video, they are both partially right and partially wrong. Batman is right on pointing out the impact he is having and what he is accomplishing, and Alfred is right on pointing out that tonight he is outmatched and will die. They are both wrong in that Batman thinks it is best if he operates solo, and that allies are a hindrance, in Alfred is wrong not to see him as the master vigilante that he is. By the end they come to understand each other, and both benefit from it. Alfred learns why Bruce is doing this and why he must continue, and Batman realizes he cannot do this entirely on his own. Allies are not a hindrance . . . they are his greatest strength.

i admire the story showing alfred and bruce's viewpoints on being batman , alfred being that he wishes that bruce doesnt throw his life away whilst bruce stating how he is the ultimate force that enduces fear upon the criminals and helping to make gotham a better place.Since bruce isnt concerned about dying , seeing alfred almost died really has shown how, without his allies , he would struggle and would even perish, showing how being batman can put your closest ones in danger , then alfred begins to understand why bruce is persistent on being batman, its incredible how batman then realises and becomes a better man. im glad that the devs had put more focus onto this

Hard to blame Gordon. He has lasted this long by trusting no one but himself. It is hard for him to accept that his first ally is not one of his fellow cops he works with every day, but with an illegal vigilante. By the end of the game, he comes around. Bruce has a character, Alfred has a character arc, Gordon has a character arc, and Joker has a character arc. Great stuff and does exactly what a prequel should do.
In my opinion, this is my second favorite Arkham game, but this is my favorite scene. The reason being that it shows this outstanding dynamic built between Bruce and Alfred. Alfred, just wanting to see Bruce not throw his life away simply for vengeance, confronting Bruce next to the prepped Batwing, just for Bruce to completely brush him off, is excellent. It shows how, for lack of a better word, arrogant Batman is in his early years. It also adds further impact to Alfred's death scene, their last real conversation being an unbalanced confrontation. It's perfect story building and characterization.
After playing Origins, I love to hear how much Bruce says 'Thanks, Alfred' in City and Knight. Shows that he does appreciate all the work Alfred does. Though he does fail to properly thank Dick, Tim and Barbara most of the time, but I guess he hasn't known them as long
@@govardhanposina17That may have a lot to do with it. Alfred is part of this, despite not really choosing it, so he deserves gratitude for it. The others did chose this, so Batman ultimately expects the same from them as he expects from himself. He actually does show Oracle a certain level of gratitude, probably because Barbera's new role on the team was forced upon her. I feel Knight also implies he became a bit more distant, and less amenable to their help because, after Jason was supposedly killed, he likely felt the pain of losing family all over again, hence he distanced. This is a common response to the premature death of a loved one in real life, and Joker knows better than anyone that Batman's psyche is not entirely healthy and whole, so it makes total sense.
Arkham Origins has BY FAR the best Bruce Wayne and Batman. He actually feels human, and not as a vehicle for gameplay and narrative like in Asylum, or someone who tortures himself with zero happiness or emotion like in Knight. We need more of THIS Batman. One that we as the audience can emotionally connect and relate to, unlike Asylum, City, and Knight which lack this aspect a bit, and one that needs his allies to succeed. If only we had more interpretations like this. This emotional connection to Bruce himself, proving that Bruce Wayne is just as, if not more important than Batman, is what makes Origins by far my favorite Arkham game.
I absolutely love how rocksteady actually Arkham origins and confirmed it to be canon in arkham knight, the shock gloves, the black mask, and the anarchy gear in the evidence room, firefly and deathstroke recalling events of the game during their side missions, it's incredible
The story in origins was amazing. I was really surprised about the negative feedback this game received back when it released. Glad to see people are starting to like this game.
"Bruce needing to realize he is not an island" isn't just the theme of *this* game, it's arguably the biggest running theme of the series. Bruce relapses on this question quite frequently, rejecting Robin's offers to help in both City and Knight, rejecting most of Nightwing's offers in Knight, and in lying to Gordon about Barbara. In Arkham knight the relationship between Robin and knightwing also greatly decreases since joker is constantly mocking batman by making him see that he failed to save Jason , joker also gives plenty of speeches that batman is no good and he always fails to keep his loved ones save. I think when Bruce created the bat family he became more scared and fearful that some force will get rid of his own family one by one or the idea that he failed to save Jason made him become more of his inexperience young counter part.
This is absolutely my favorite Arkham game, by far. And it’s because of the character relationships that are handled SO perfectly in this game. It reminded me a lot of the DCAU in how much emotion and thoughtful storytelling was put into every inch of the characterization. Batman’s characterization was very similar to the DCAU Batman, which threw me back to my childhood. Even if the game mechanics weren’t perfect, the story was as close to perfect as it can be. And the mechanics aren’t so broken that it distracts from the story. The story stays front and center and is so damn compelling
Honestly when I originally played through the game, I was so invested in the story the fact that we know Alfred survives never even occurred to me. For a brief moment I was legitimately thinking “I got a save Alfred! I can’t let him die here.” Like the character I was playing as I felt like I had failed Alfred. That is something that most prequels can’t do. Help me so invested in the story of the characters that I can overlook what I know comes later.
This scene is one of my favourites in the Batman Arkham games. I can see both sides of Bruce and Alfred's argument: Alfred sees Bruce heading down a destructive path in his pursuit of justice. He is worried that one night Batman may not make it back home alive and Alfred would live with the same trauma that consumed Bruce after he lost his parents. With no one else standing up to the villains and the crooked cops on their payroll, Batman is, "the only THING" that is making an effort in cleaning up Gotham's streets. Spreading fear into the hearts of criminals, to him, is the only effective method on bringing about justice.
The Alfred and Bruce drama appears to be a common trope we've seen for every Batman universe. The Dark Knight Trilogy, Batman V. Superman, The Batman, even Telltale's Batman had it too. Origins may be the best version of this trend after watching this video essay. Thanks a lot.
I very much like the dynamic between Batfleck and Jeremy Irons Alfred, definitely up there with Origins. wish we had gotten that Batman v Deathstroke film where (spoiler alert) Alfred was supposed to die.
I remember playing origins the first time and saying out loud to myself and my friend “Alfred isnt going to die, hes in city, i know he lives, but Batman doesn’t know this” immediately upon seeing Alfred i knew the scene was going to be very significant to the overall story of batman, and wasn’t supposed to be a moment of suspense for the player but rather a moment of character building
Origins was the first game in this series that I watched. A friend gave me this game for Christmas early and told me to open it on the eve and play it at midnight. So I did and that night was one of the best gaming experiences that ive ever had. The atmosphere fit because of tje time of year and as a rookie of the series I fit in well with bruce being a rookie as batman. Alfred's death wasn't a gotcha moment to others, it was a gut wrenching moment that had me in disbelief. My introduction couldn't have been better and it is why for all of its flaws, origins is my favourite arkham game
I've seen in red thousands of stories into this day I still think Alfred and Bruce is one of the most wholesome Dynamics in all of fiction. There is just something far too pure about it
One way you can tell this game was ahead of its time is the fact Robert Pattinson's The Batman basically rips this scene off with the fakeout death of Alfred and the reconciliation with Andy Serkis' Alfred later. (I daresay this game established and developed the relationship between its Batman and Alfred far better. Considering The Batman has like two Alfred scenes and that's it.) Also, this theme of Batman learning to put aside his ego and let people help him was expertly explored for pretty much the entirety of Lego Batman, which came years after. Arkham Origins, Lego Batman, and The Batman. Three of the best pieces of Batman media in recent years feature this theme, and Origins was the first to touch on it.
Great scenes. Makes me want to imagine the dialogue that Bane and Alfred have as the former trashes the Batcave and assaults the latter. Similar to Bane's actions in Knightfall where he trashes the mansion, beats up Alfred and simply waits there for Bruce to return home exhausted. Alfred sees for himself just how sick and twisted Bruce's enemies really are (something comics Bane takes as a compliment), and how important it is that someone be around to stop them from preying on the innocent.
The relationship between Bruce and Alfred in this game is phenomenal, especially because we never really did get much of Alfred in the rest of the series, he was never in asylum, was partially there in city, and I guess the closest to them bonding like in origins is Arkham knight, otherwise I love how Alfred acts more like a parent and the way bruce reacts is honestly amazing , the character development in this game is solely underrated and one of the best I've seen in any game
My favourite thing in Arkham Origins is Bane. His intelligence is highly shown here, with him finding out Batmans identity. Not to mention his strength is also good aswell, throwing Batman around like he's NOTHING. His final fight (The second half) in Origins 100% the best Bane fight we'll get. It shows his power and the monster he had to become to gain that power. His design is really faithful to the comics, but the one thing holding him back is his the fact he gets dumb downed at the end to match his other appearences.
11:20: and let's not forget that while we as the player know Alfred dying isn't possible due to appearances in other games, for Bruce, the man behind the mask. It was a very real moment for him
I don't care what anyone says, this is the best Arkham game with Knight being just abit behind it. The reason its so good is because of everything said in this video, the dymanic between Bruce and Alfred and how The Batman is easily outmatched by 8 Assassins trying to kill him for 50 million dollars. Batman never realised how hard Alfred worked for him to succeed in the majority of the game. and when Batman changes, he makes sure everyone one is working as one big unit, recuriting everyone he can to his side and checking on Alfred due to him being close to death 30 minutes ago. Another reason why this game is my favourite is because of the Online mode. The online mode is good i can't even explain it and its a shame they shut the servers down but hopefully they will see how much love and attention origins is now getting and hopefully reactivate the servers allowing all platforms to play again
origins was acctually the last game from the series i played, i knew that alfred very clearly didnt die as hes been in every game in the series. Yet the scene still almost brought me to tears, its incredible not a bad "gotcha moment"
I think its fair to say that Alfred's "death" really affected this version of Bruce. Because he doesn't want people getting directly involved in other games. Especially in Knight where he wants to keep Tim safe despite knowing that the situation outside would require more help. I think that seeing Oracle's death via Fear Toxin brought the memories of seeing Alfred's corpse back up and he decided best Tim hate him than be in any risk
15:18 also note that this part Bruce Has truly became “The Batman”. It’s also building up to this point. He wasn’t even like it in the earlier parts of the game. This just truly shows him actually being “the Batman”. (The comics of this series shows it well after origins)
I wish we could get one more prequel.. building and developmenting the cave and the car.. build the suit.. it absolutely could be as big as Arkham Knight.. damnlet..
I don't understand why people criticize Alfred's death in Origins. It's a prequel, of course we'll still see him in Arkham City. And even though I knew Alfred wasn't going to stay dead in Arkham Origins, I still cried.
And that spells the difference between Batman and Hugo Strange: Strange wanted to be like Batman, but could only do so by admitting he was only human; he was too overconfident to do so, however, and so his greatest fear was that he was not an island.
Been waiting for this because I knew you'd do it eventually. This scene is perfect. It's batman pushing himself too far because of the promise he made to protect the city and alfred doubting him because of how far he's going. Both characters are right, but Bruce is just ultimately a dick about it, thinking he's more than a man. And it lends itself perfectly to when we see alfred die because of batman overextending himself, when we see the roles reverse and it's now Bruce doubting his abilities and alfred willing him on. Just a magnificent story.
The fact that this video exists makes me so happy. This is my favorite Arkham game and damn well may be my favorite game of all time. People usually look at this game as "that other Arkham game" but it stands on its own on the same level as the rest of the series, and in my personal opinion elevated above the rest
Awesome vid, I hate it when people trash talk this cutscene, it’s honestly one of my favourite cutscenes in the entire franchise. Also love the ad segment with scarecrow
I’ve never seen someone with so much passion for the Arkham games honestly every time I do a new playtrough i come back to watch your rankings and the scene breakdowns they always enhance my playthroughs
Origins was the first Arkham game I played, and I didn’t even know about the other ones yet, so I actually did think Alfred was gonna die. That made the scene extra special for me.
origins is like the gta4 off the arkham series it gets pissed on when it gets released but people slowly warm up to it and understand how good i really was
I hope to see this kind of relationship dynamic featured in the next movie/TV show reboot, or even an animated origin story of sorts (akin to Sumerman: man of Tomorrow, which is set in its own continuity). All other Batman origin stories depict Alfred as being nonplussed by seeing the boy he raised, growing up to become "hardened vigilante," and he typically just rolls with it. Here, Alfred is more of a character and unsung hero, a caring surrogate father, and the heart and soul of this story. This dynamic absolutely needs to return to any Batman stories set early in his career.
Origins is my second favorite, almost first. When it first came out everyone hated it for some reason. Bruce and Alfred were at their best in Origins, the story was good, the multiplayer was AMAZING for a first attempt and had amazing potential, Bane was at his best in the series, it had the best skins at the time, the best boss fights in the series, etc. Wish people appreciated it when it came out. The mobile game was cool too when you could unlock stuff
With Alfred’s death scene, and pretty much all prequel stories, it’s never about what is going to happen or where it’s going; the events inform the characters and provide new context that didn’t previously exist. Alfred’s death does a good job at interrogating what Bruce is willing to risk for justice; and it turns out, not much when it comes to his family. On to character deaths as a whole, I’m typically never sold on it unless there are other characters to have a strong reaction. Take Arkham Knight for example. The Ace Chemicals explosion and lugging the neutralizing agent across the room actually tricked me for a moment. If you allowed me to think about it I wouldn’t fall for it so easily, but the swelling music and genuine pleading from Alfred for Bruce to save himself had me slapped to the wall, thinking this would be the end; that is, until Joker showed up. The same principle applies to Origins, and Bruce’s reaction. Bruce goes from a somber plead, to kneeling down in his failure, and then rejecting that outcome with rage. He goes on to think of a quick solution and saves Alfred, but it still has some big consequences on his psyche, and it takes a really good pep talk from Alfred himself, reassuring Bruce of what he needs to do. And that is why I think having Alfred “die” was a good choice.
Also... Alfred does all of that in a cold-ass cave... during the coldest day in years... Great video! I feel like Arkham Origins is slowly being more and more appreciated and that makes me so happy. It's my second favorite (after Asylum) and it's in great part, because of the story.
Origins was the first Arkham game I played as a kid so I appreciate this game way more simply because it was a part of my childhood. As a kid I never really noticed how impactful this and the death of Alfred scenes were. Looking back at this I want to replay this game like I have been doing for the other 3 games. Side note: I 240% completed Knight… _and I’ll do it again_
City was a big part of my childhood, and yet Origins quickly dethroned it when I finally got around to playing it. I wish I could've experienced it first before the other games
I’ve been saying for a while that Origins reminded me a lot of the old animated series with its tone and setting. That’s the one main reason that I hold this game so high up in my ranking for the series.
It was overshadowed by GTA 5 however there should've been a 100% ending where we go have that Christmas dinner maybe the remastered and the dlc included for free
This was always my favorite game in the saga, I still remember playing it when I was a child and enjoying it even without understanding the story well, I can't imagine how much I would enjoy it today understanding all this context, I hope one day a remastered version of this beautiful game will reach us to be able to play it again
I would legit argue that is the best wrtten story in the entire arkham series. Yes, even when it's joker again, but even that part is written quit well if you ask me. Really wish this game would also get a ps4 remaster someday.
I don’t know if anyone’s said this yet but I think my favorite exchange between the 2 is when Alfred says that he should be careful of kids seeing him pattering across rooftops and Batman goes “I don’t..patter” and Alfred just sighs🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣the line delivery is just perfect😂😂😂
When Bruce said "while you are here every night, i am out there", I don't think that had anything to do with him diminishing how helpful Alfred has always been. I think it more so was him speaking on seeing just how serious the impact of his work as Batman, and why he can't just stop how Alfred wants him to. That's why he followed up with him being the only thing between the innocent and the predatory.
Arkham Origins will always be ranked lower than most of the other Arkham games, but being ranked with some of the top-tier superhero games is super impressive, especially with it being Warner Montreal's first try at a batman game(I may be incorrect with this, but still probably their second try if so)
Arkham Origins was my first Arkham game and I didn’t know that there were other Arkham games so when I saw this scene I seriously thought that Alfred died.
If you have played the full cut-scene in which the exchange between Batman and Alfred takes place, It would have made this video even more fantastic(atleast for me)... It's my Favorite cutscene in the whole franchise. And I love this video♡
Freaking Right Great Analysis There is a Reason why arkham origins is one of my favorite stories and favorite story in the arkham games Great Job I absolutely adore the dynamic between Bruce and Alfred in this game. It shows just how much Alfred matters in Bruce’s life and how much he needed to accept that. while Bruce does not realize it until alfred dies its a shame this game is criminally underated but now seems to be getting the love and attention it deserves
man, i never got to play arkham origins because my first console was a ps4 and it was never remastered. i remember watching a playthrough of it because my dad played city and asylum but as a child under 13 i always just played the game and badly, now i replayed arkham asylum and city for myself because of the remaster and it was better than i remember, i still need to play origins because i love it when there's a police vs batman situation and i love the combat feeling and just the story in general.
As someone whose first game was origins I loved the dynamic of Alfred and Bruce and honestly this game gets to much hate just because it wasn’t made by rocksteady and it has been a Christmas tradition of mine to play this game every Christmas as it is my fav in the series

@@sunsetman22no spoiler alert needed lol. The movie’s never going to happen now
I remember playing origins the first time and saying out loud to myself and my friend “Alfred isnt going to die, hes in city, i know he lives, but Batman doesn’t know this” immediately upon seeing Alfred i knew the scene was going to be very significant to the overall story of batman, and wasn’t supposed to be a moment of suspense for the player but rather a moment of character building
There is just something far too pure about it
When that scene plays and Bruce starts fighting with Alfred, my legitimate response was “Hey! You treat your dad with respect!”
Considering The Batman has like two Alfred scenes and that's it.)
Also, this theme of Batman learning to put aside his ego and let people help him was expertly explored for pretty much the entirety of Lego Batman, which came years after. Arkham Origins, Lego Batman, and The Batman. Three of the best pieces of Batman media in recent years feature this theme, and Origins was the first to touch on it.
Alfred and Batman are the original dynamic duo.
“I am not in danger Alfred, I am the danger”
Alfred, we need to cook glue.
I am the one who knocks
Great scenes. Makes me want to imagine the dialogue that Bane and Alfred have as the former trashes the Batcave and assaults the latter. Similar to Bane's actions in Knightfall where he trashes the mansion, beats up Alfred and simply waits there for Bruce to return home exhausted. Alfred sees for himself just how sick and twisted Bruce's enemies really are (something comics Bane takes as a compliment), and how important it is that someone be around to stop them from preying on the innocent.
I refuse to believe that encounter didn't involve Alfred pulling a shotgun on Bane.
The dynamic between Bruce and Alfred is amazing, like me and my apprentice.
This low key gives me “I am the one who knocks” vibes
This scene is the equivalent to Walter White's "I am the one who knocks" speech
origins was acctually the last game from the series i played, i knew that alfred very clearly didnt die as hes been in every game in the series. Yet the scene still almost brought me to tears, its incredible not a bad "gotcha moment"
“No, They Need US” GOD I LOVE THAT LINE
This is why I love origins. The dynamic between Alfred and Batman in this game is amazing
U didnt watch the vid tho.
@@qui-gonjinn8350 ok? That doesn’t change the fact that the dynamic between Alfred and Bruce is amazing.
@@Dctctx exactly
@@Dctctx thats not what i said but aight.
@@qui-gonjinn8350 that’s what you implied.
Alfred is the only old person who knows how to work with technology
15:18 also note that this part Bruce Has truly became “The Batman”. It’s also building up to this point. He wasn’t even like it in the earlier parts of the game. This just truly shows him actually being “the Batman”. (The comics of this series shows it well after origins)
I wish we could get one more prequel.. building and developmenting the cave and the car.. build the suit.. it absolutely could be as big as Arkham Knight.. damnlet..
I'm so glad that Arkham Origins is getting the praise it deserves. :)
Batman: A guy opens his door and gets the shit kicked out of him, and you think that of me? No Alfred, I am the one who knocks.
Thugs out.
I always liked the origins game and i will always consider this canon with the other games
This is why I love this channel, it's these little moments you bring up makes this series even more incredible. A story about a man.
Arkham Origins has the best character arcs for Batman and Alfred, that sets them up for the entire series!
“Don’t add me to the weight you carry.” That line makes me tear up every time I hear it. I love Alfred almost as much as I love Batman.
origins is like the gta4 off the arkham series it gets pissed on when it gets released but people slowly warm up to it and understand how good i really was
And arkham knight is like gta v the most overrated games in their series
@@ironbat5481nuh uh, Arkham knight is a good game and I’m tired of pretending its not
@@leafysstream108 it good doesn't mean it not overrated
Clownpuncher I got my results back and I passed!
my favourite cutscene in all of the arkham games
Batman Arkham origns is my favorite Arkham game
I hope to see this kind of relationship dynamic featured in the next movie/TV show reboot, or even an animated origin story of sorts (akin to Sumerman: man of Tomorrow, which is set in its own continuity). All other Batman origin stories depict Alfred as being nonplussed by seeing the boy he raised, growing up to become "hardened vigilante," and he typically just rolls with it. Here, Alfred is more of a character and unsung hero, a caring surrogate father, and the heart and soul of this story. This dynamic absolutely needs to return to any Batman stories set early in his career.
Iconic and yet Underrated at the same time.
Sometimes I replay the entire game just so that I can watch the scene just one more time
I believe this is the best scene in the entire game. I love Alfred's caring love for Bruce.
And I can't be the only one.
This game is underrated
This is probably one of the best analysis videos I’ve ever seen.Brilliant job.
Just started playing this a few days ago and seriously can’t see why people hate it it’s a brilliant story with a lot of intrigue
They don't call him "Batman's Batman" for nothing
I would legit argue that is the best wrtten story in the entire arkham series. Yes, even when it's joker again, but even that part is written quit well if you ask me. Really wish this game would also get a ps4 remaster someday.
I don’t know if anyone’s said this yet but I think my favorite exchange between the 2 is when Alfred says that he should be careful of kids seeing him pattering across rooftops and Batman goes “I don’t..patter” and Alfred just sighs🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣the line delivery is just perfect😂😂😂
Man imagine if we got this game as a movie. With a few tweaks I'm sure people would call it the best Origins movie for Batman.
It’s crazy how Roger got in as The Batman who laughs in MultiVersus
I love Arkham origins definitely one of the best in the series.
Arkham Origins will always be ranked lower than most of the other Arkham games, but being ranked with some of the top-tier superhero games is super impressive, especially with it being Warner Montreal's first try at a batman game(I may be incorrect with this, but still probably their second try if so)
Arkham Origins always had my best story of the series
Arkham Origins was my first Arkham game and I didn’t know that there were other Arkham games so when I saw this scene I seriously thought that Alfred died.
I remember playing this game "forgetting" the events of future game and When Alfred died I was shocked and kinda saddened
If you have played the full cut-scene in which the exchange between Batman and Alfred takes place, It would have made this video even more fantastic(atleast for me)...
It's my Favorite cutscene in the whole franchise. And I love this video♡
A beautifully done video for a beautifully done scene! Great job!
I’m liking Arkham origins more and more as the day goes by 👍🏻
This was a great video man thanks for doing this game Justice
As someone whose first game was origins I loved the dynamic of Alfred and Bruce and honestly this game gets to much hate just because it wasn’t made by rocksteady and it has been a Christmas tradition of mine to play this game every Christmas as it is my fav in the series
In this game Alfred Is scared for Bruce and has not accepted that Bruce needs Batman and needs to be Batman
One of the other interesting parts is how he becomes friends with that King Bat in the cave as the game goes on, mirroring the way him and Bruce are.
It was only after watching Breaking Bad did I realize this scene was inspired by "I am the one who knocks"
i love seeing clownpuncher upload and i absolutely love the content especially because it shows there is a community for us nerds
I still haven't gotten over how so many sinned this scene. What is wrong with them? What is that they see? Nothing?
Seeing what this story taught bruce about allies i wish we got a dlc or game on how he met dick
Another perfect video
