Please note: The white coloration in the sky is a cloud that's part of this cover's artwork.
I think the MOST overlooked thing here is that these were all cardstock heavier paper books.
Brand new card stock stuff can get 9.9s but standard comics almost neverrrrrrr can get above 9.8.
I've submitted 7,000 books (or more honestly) and I've only ever gotten 2 9.9s.
Both of which were brand new card stock moderns.
Sounds right. Hard to get a 9.9 mint condition book. Took coming straight from the press just to get these. Love your show btw.
*_Wait a sec....you didn't flip the pages, how do you know they are all there and printed correctly?_*
Maybe he did off camera 📸 maybe 🤔
Assume other examination was done...If they gave away all their trade secrets, it'd make them a less valuable company.
This is pre grading. Why would he need to go through the interior in a pre grading process if it had noticeable defects from the cover? That would be a waste of time.
@@jamielee1828 And ummmm where are his gloves? Gonna love the fingerprints and oils destroying that book.
I would ask that you try flipping through hundreds of books with gloves and see if you are able to handle the books without damaging them. Have you tried? Honestly, you should try. I have found that with gloves there is a greater chance of damaging books. With clean dry hands in a clean environment you would be less inclined to damage the book. I have handled books from modern to golden age in pristine to crumbling
*_You gotta be kidding me...._*
*_ALL those 9.9's look worse than ALL my 9.8's....._*
*_You can NOT have any paper wear/white on corners and still get a 9.9..._*
*_I could re-submit 1,000 books tomorrow that look better than those 9.9's, and half would come back lower than the 9.8 grades they have-because it's all random, based on who grades the book._*
*_I TRULY hope ALL who grade books at CGC HAS TO watch this video before they ever grade a single book again...._*
Pre grading. This is the fastest way and then a more detailed review would be done in a more closer process (potentially by others)
So they don't even open the books ?
Nope. Now they're just grading covers and anything goes.
Do not start undermine 20 years of grading to now start handing out more 9.9 and 10.0s.
Nice job CGC... deleting comments.
I remember I seen one dudes book Asm first carnage it had 8-9 spine ticks and came back 9.8 hahaha like I said subjective
So I just submitted 23 books but one mysteriously disappeared! I was told the security cameras didn't find any theft had taken place, but that doesn't explain my lost book?? What are the next steps I can take? This book was without a doubt in the shipment sent to you guys.
Is this how all pre-screens are completed? If I send in 25 books to be pre-screened and the submissions include multiple customers' books and some of them are duplicates, are they all just mixed up like this? So customer A's copy of book x could be mixed up with customer B's copy and then the wrong one is rejected?
This is a great question,….
you likely won’t get an answer to from them here. 😭
The way you’re handling the books is crazy. Also none of those books looked liked 9.8’s let alone 9.9’s or 10’s.
Shhhh...(that's how they make 💰💰💰💰)
The entire 9.9 thing is ridiculous. 9.8 was the gold standard…now they moved the goal post even further and lessened the criteria to achieve a 9.9. Matt even said there’s 9.8s out there that should be 9.9s lol. Idk I think this is a cash grab for more books being sent or resent to try for the 9.9…very very few people can tell the difference between a 9.8 and 9.9. Those minor difference idk why collectors care about…just ridiculous.
They’ll keep moving the goal post though…yesterday’s 9.8 gold standard will now be 9.9 (more 9.9s will show up on the census)….then a few years later…the 10.0 will be gold standard and the 9.9 will be old news. Then they’ll do a black label 10.0 and so on lol. Just gets ridiculous at the end of the day. Like give me an older book that’s a 9.6/9.8 vs a modern 9.9/10.0 any day.
Not to mention the scandals CGC recently went through. Let’s not gloss over that. And those stacks of 9.9s didn’t look great. I have 9.8s that look flawless but some reason it’s a 9.8 lol.
I believe every book under a 10 should have graders notes even on the minor defects on why a book got a 9.8 and not a 10.0. But they don’t do it…and dude was flipping through books so fast and says “I’m looking at the same book so I can go fast”….uhhhh no…going fast you can miss something. If I’m spending my money on grading a book…I want each book to have the time taken and due diligence to look over everything. Can’t just go fast. I just shake my head at CGC sometimes lol.
It most collectors mostly Reggie collects care 9.8 books he don’t have graded get 9.8 he sells to people he states in his video 9.8 are not important 9.6 maybe don’t waste time on 9.8 title of his video what does he always say in submission videos to cgc hoping get 9.8 disappointed it’s not 9.8
@@dragonball3166 I like Regie…good content and solid dude. I’m not telling people how to collect or this or that…I’m saying CGC is getting ridiculous with this…with no transparency…and the way dude handled books…I just shake my head.
I think everyone’s book needs the time and due diligence to earn the grade it deserves…and not give certain *influencers* a bump. So many things CGC could do to help their brand…and they won’t do it nor care to try. They’ll make money regardless….so.
CGC should just hire me…I could be their PR and fix it. 😂
Get ready for a new grade 9.99 😂😂😂
@@mikelitteris69 I just think to a point it gets ridiculous lol. Also not to mention the price difference resellers would charge between a 9.8 vs a 9.9. Heck the 9.6 vs 9.8 price difference is ridiculous also.
The CGC reholder scam was done by MARVEL FANS. Lets not forget that either, because Marvel and their fans are POS.
As someone who has bought cgc slabs and submitted myself over the last 15 years I think I'm officially done with cgc. Between them not bothering to update there case and this new screening they do for 9.9s it's just too much. 9.9s and 10s were once incredibly rare. Anyone who has bought or received modern 9.8s over the last 20 years should be passed because I'm sure half of them would be 9.9s by today's cgc standards. 9.9s are the new 9.8s and all your 9.is will be decreasing in price soon.
They are not pre-screening for 9.9s that was a rumor, it's not currently active.
Thanks for deleting my comment. 👍 Will say it again though. So only one grader looks at books then. Definitely not what your website says.... "Grading is a team effort, multiple people check each submission" How are we supposed to trust you when your own videos go against what you say your specified grading process is. 😡
I suppose when they say “multiple people check each submission” they are referring to the people who unpack and separate the submission, the grader, the people who encase the comic, etc. not necessarily multiple people grading it. I agree, the language is a little ambiguous. I think admitting one grader grades a single book would provide more clarity.
@@dansxmencomics no, they actually do say that multiple people grade each submission. If you look at slide for Step 4 Grading on their CGC Grading Process page, it clearly states that MULTIPLE Cgc professionals examine every book for accuracy and consistency.
@@padbearj3154 dang, nice research. I believe you but I don’t really believe that CGC statement if that’s what it says. Pretty sure one person grades and someone else just signs off on a stack without a 2nd thorough inspection. Since so many of us are unsure it would be nice if they provided more clarity.
This is a pre screen.
@@jamielee1828 are prescreened comics graded by 1 person and non-prescreened graded by multiple?
That 10 had a slight bend
Thank you for this video CGC. It got a lot of good comments that you guys should respond to in a follow up video.
I have seen a lot of comments all over comics TH-cam about people's books getting mysterious damage that wasn't there before they sent it to you to be graded. So how about:
1) Customer takes photos of their books before submission.
2) CGC takes photos of the books when they receive them.
3) CGC takes photos of the books once the grading process is complete, before being encased.
4) CGC takes photos of the books after being encased.
5) Each grader/grading session is recorded.
6) Graders notes included for every book.
This way there is total transparency about the condition of the book. Just some ideas!
Thank you!!
I think you guys have made a mistake grading my 9.8”s at 9.8… clearly after seeing this video Im confident I should be at a 9.9 with a majority, will you pay for shipping and regrading in this case? Or is this just another way of getting customers you have lost recently to come back and hand them out 9.9 and 10 for all the bullshit?
Exactly what I was just thinking myself
still won't renew. should of made a video of changes they are going to implement to the slabs.
They might do that but still in R&D. Changes aren't immediate. Takes alot of funding, time and change in process to make the change in slab design.
Glad I never used cgc
Thanks for sharing this. It’s a good start of showing transparency in your grading process
Umm. So you handle the 10.0 3x longer than a 9.8? Do you not think you may damage one of the 10s by flipping it around the way you are?
Dude Says "now that we are done with this first phase, these books are going to be entered into our system, and given a numerical grade based on what they were given in the preliminary pre-screen". So this "pre-scren" is the actual grade it gets?? That's crazy, didn't even open it. 😮
what about the oils on your fingers/hands... do you generally use gloves when grading?
Wearing gloves is outdated, washing your hands and making sure they are dry is the new norm
😑
@@ifreezetvcomicsI wear gloves that’s normal for me he washe his hands then touch door knobs which have oil, dirt on them boxes are always dirty
@@dragonball3166 do you work for a archival Company or museum? It’s not common practice anymore, when you wear gloves you lose tactile sensitivity in your finger tips. People have damaged paintings and books while wearing gloves because they didn’t feel how brittle paper was before touching it. Graders for comic books also don’t wear gloves so they can feel for restoration
@@ifreezetvcomics I mean for most books sure but do you think you can handle a high gloss all black cover squarebound without leaving a fingerprint? It's not possible.
They all have fingerprints.
I've shaken hands with Shawn. He doesn't tend to have oily hands. Okay, that sounds creepy
I got a 9.8 back with a big greasy finger print on the front cover. It was never touched by human hands until I sent it to cgc
They do now😅😅
What the hell LOL this has to be a joke?
Not impressed with how rough the books are being manually handled. I can only imagine how individual submissions are handled by several CGC employees before a comic is even graded.
How many thousands of books are going through the process? Do you think that they have staff of thousands?
This is a great overview of how the spines and corners are looked at. I’ve had what I believed to be a 9.8 come back as a 9.6. Sure, I was mad but now I have a little clarity as to why.
This was what you derived from this video? I see it the other way around. If you send in the same book, you should now get 9.8. The grade you should have gotten. Meaning, CGC deliberately are lowering the standard of grading to inject more 9.8s and 9.9s into the comic book marketplace, and bumping the big investors with grail books. Good game.
@@allisknu11 We all collect for different reasons. I don't collect or slab for investment reasons. If what I thought should have been a 9.8 came back as a 9.6, now I have the clarity to look at it and go, "wow. that's why and now I can see why". To me, it's a much better take away than wondering if either the grader didn't have enough coffee that morning or to believe there's some conspiracy to boost investments.
A fool and his money are soon parted. Lucky there are a lot of fools supporting your business. This is just disgusting to me, given you are looking at nothing but the covers and completely arbitrary. Nope..
That comment about them looking only at the covers! 100%
I have a question, why has my comic been in pressing for 2 and a half weeks? It doesnt take that long to press a comic. I just dont understand why the grading and pressing process has to take so long.
I don’t understand how it can be a 10.0 if it’s never been opened..?
I’ve gotten so many comics with pages in wrong order, typos, messed up staples, etc. That’s all on the inside.
I just found a Dave Stevens book with 8 incorrect pages (4 in the first half, four in the second half). They were duplicate pages but the number of pages is correct. Do you know if this makes it more valuable? Thx
This is the video that will make me NEVER send a book to CGC…
I’m still a believer you need to remove the human aspect of grading and invest in A.I machine to do the grading for you.
1. A machine will be faster
2. It will be more accurate
3. No bias or opinion on what is or isn’t a defect.
4. When it scans the books front and back covers. There won’t be any human handling that could damage the book other than putting it on the scanner.
And while there will still need to be a grader to check the interior and smaller things. The machine in the end will provide a grade for the book against the graders views in the interior. Thus you have the grade for the book.
I got about 20 books signed at Heroes Con this year then sent them off to get graded plus another 10 just to get pressed and Graded & another 10 to just get graded. I didn’t pay for fast Track & it is now July 24 and my books will be arriving tomorrow which is the fastest turnaround time I’ve ever seen with Cgc and I’ve sent hundreds of books to get graded if not more over the yrs. I’m just praying I’ll be happy with the grades.
This video is very telling and not in a good way. This smells like a cash grab and a distraction to what’s really hurting cgc. It’s too bad because a lot of real collectors don’t trust you guys anymore.
This was co very useful!
CGC is a trash company.
🤣😂CGC Roast🍿🍿Popcorn 🍿 🍿 Im here 4 it comment 💬 💬 section
The comic book community needs a new grading company. One with a spine and honesty. A company that is NOT owned by a wall street fund. We need a family owned company that we can trust. After the pile of scams they have been through the past 5-6 years I stopped submitting.
You are holding Waaayyy too many books in one hand!!!!!!!! That does NOT Look safe!
This CGC video appears to be more propaganda than informative content, and at worst, it's simply a load of nonsense. It primarily underscores the shortcomings in their grading system, particularly for items rated 9.9 and 10. It's worth noting that the individual presenting was once their senior grader, adding an interesting perspective to their critique. However, the more CGC attempts to enhance their reputation, the more apparent the flaws become.
This is only a brief breakdown. Everyone should ask CGC if they could explain the full process. I will admit I don't know the full process myself (I am a CGC SS witness) and have worked with Shawn when he first started with CGC. You should all also consider how many books that go through the grading process and that for the fraction that have problems a significant number have been successfully returned. If information was comparable and open you might want to compare with Amazon product delivery (which only accounts for the returns of course and would not be comparable to the delivery to Sarasota).
MY BOOK DISSAPPEARED?!? So I just submitted 23 books but one mysteriously disappeared! I was told the security cameras didn't find any theft had taken place, but that doesn't explain my lost book?? What are the next steps I can take? This book was without a doubt in the shipment sent to you guys.
That cgc 10 grade with the bend in the cover kills me 😂
Don’t wear any gloves and put your greasy oily hands all over every book then damage books as you’re literally saying we don’t want to damage books 🤦🏼♂️.Great video showing us how incompetent and sloppy you guys handle books
Excellent job. Doing more for justifying 9.6 vs 9.8 and higher than any other video on TH-cam. Plus I like seeing the process.
How many people are going to use this video against you guys when they do a mistake. There’s a few mistake that you did fingerprints the way you grab those books and a few more. You say, did you check the books inside for Staples or missing pages wow
Hi and thanks for posting this video. In the spirit of always working to improve a process, here are a few observations based on the video and comments so far:
1. One thing you have to do ASAP is train your graders to never straighten a stack of books by picking the stack up and setting the bottoms of the books on a table, as it was done here in the video: th-cam.com/video/eptB-oGvmA0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=gDqCfqWzIZl3XHR3&t=358, some of the books will fall a couple of inches and that's all it takes to damage a spine or edge.
2. Another handling mistake is to pick a book up by the top and bottom, as was done here in the video: th-cam.com/video/eptB-oGvmA0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=dd4CUMcxMHJ6YFnP&t=549, If you freeze the video you can visibly see the spine bending and possibly turning a 10.0 into a 9.8, or lower.
3. I also wouldn't pick up a stack of books all at once, this is inviting disaster if they start to slide. While slower, I recommend only handling one book at the time for grading. This book might not be a big risk since this specific book has a relatively rough surface, but some books are quite slippery.
I hope this helps and thanks again!
This is deflating the value of the entire slabbed market. Comic market crash coming. Shame on cgc.
I no longer trust CGC. Just not worth it.
I feel ya! CGC states that grading is subjective and has many other disclaimers. It gives themselves freedom to do what they want with minimal accountability. That is the trade off for having a third party grader process. Bummin' here too like you.
At least for me, this video did the opposite of what it was intended to do. I'll be cancelling my membership and never submitting a book to CGC ever again. Absolutely crazy video. You used a lot of words, but all I heard was "We give the grades we want and there is nothing you can do about it." 70 9.9s? 7 10.0s? Hahahahhahahahahahhaha
Thanks for sharing 👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I'm confused with the name CGC....What exactly is Guaranteed again?!? Just that someone looked at it?
Remember that moment CGC didnt just shoot themselves in the foot, but completely Robocop-ed it? Pepperidge Farms remembers.
I take this video at face value. As it is stated in this video this is a pre-screen for 9.8 grade books mailed straight from the Printer.
Not a regular submission. Not an average collector or seller submission. Not a third party submission but a direct Printer to Grading Company submission. So this process or parts of the process shown makes sense for dozens or
hundreds of copies of the same book. This gentleman did a pre-screen to determine if any of these copies merit a 9.8 or better. Then these books are sent to go through full processing. Those books that did not pass (9.6 and lower) will then be returned to whoever paid for the pre-screen. He appears to be a very experienced grader but I would be interested in knowing if any of his 9.8 or better books were downgraded during the rest of the processing. I was not expecting a "How to Start Your Own Grading Company" video which would not be in CGC's best interest.
Thank you CGC for releasing this. I would like to see more smaller regular submissions from the average person be featured in future videos.
This video is CLEARLY bait for collectors to re-submit their 9.8s to try to achieve that 9.9. DON'T FALL FOR IT.
9.8 used to be a comic free of defects. 10.0 was a pristine comic free of imperfections. Based on this, 9.8 is free of creases, and 10.0 is somewhat arbitrary, but available to your high volume customers.
LOL so you just chuck the comics about damaging them, take a 1 second look over the cover and this is your grading process? This is insane 😅
RAW IS THE ONLY WAY....Save your money to buy comics not Grading services....
Yeah I like raw books but with some older ones, I’m always worried about possible restoration
And this is why it takes 6 mos to get my books back.
If you are collecting only for your PC and a 9.8 is still a 9.8 in your eyes, now is a good time to send in books so you can have all your slabs in a 9.8.
Wow, over 300 9.8's. What's the market out there for these comics?
Also, such a random book to do this too I feel like. Like are that many people going to want this graded?
This video shows how NOT to handle books
Why are you all invested in this absurdity? @2:52 tells you this exercise is pointless, when his own handling of a 10.0 would create a 9.9 or 9.8...
Why doesn’t he wear gloves. Now I know why they note “finger print on back cover”….
Gloves cause people's hands to sweat and it will drip out of the gloves on to comics. Properly clean and dry hands won't leave fingerprints on books.
Gloves are a terrible idea when handling paper.
I can see CGC messing over the faithful 9.8 collectors by getting looser in 9.9 for cash grabs
Nice video! I appreciate the transparency 👍
Please don’t water down the 9.8 grade with a sudden influx of 9.9s. Where you’re going with this propaganda is pretty clear. I’m so disappointed with you guys.
Can you make a press and clean video?
Thanks for the breakdown. I like grading videos
😂. You would be crazy to buy a graded comic after the latest from cgc.
Even with a video explaining the 9.9 and 10 process, people are still pissed...pissed off comic collectors who've never kissed more than 1 girl as they whine over comics is pretty typical, they'll never be happy with anything
You are right that people are upset. I think the issue here is, the way how this person handles the book and not opening the book to verify if there are any defect and how casually describe what a 9.9 is. Also how does he prevent finger print on card stock from occurring given that there is supposedly multiple grader per single book. He doesn't really explain in detail the difference/nuances between a 9.8/9.9/10.0. Apparently spending 10-15 sec to grade a book is adequate. Honestly speaking, how much useful information has he mentioned beside the obvious. For me it would be more informational if he shows a book that is not in card stock , rather printed on a standard paper and explain the difference.
You would think after the reholder/inside job scandal that CGC would move more accordingly but they just wants to lose more customers. 😂
@thecgccomics I think clarification on whether this would be pre screening and would a second person do another round of grading or just validation of Shawn's grade for these same books? If you would be able to help clarify I am sure the community would appreciate this. Thanks
Gee I wonder as you supposedly have two people grading a certain book?? Not biased on grading books I see eh…
Propaganda!
I’ll just buy a 9.9 and then switch the case - happy days
So much wrong with this.
All these ideas about an automated process for grading are great but it takes time and money to do this. One might argue that CGC should be putting more money towards R&D but they are owned by a wider company that has other sectors and do you see grading of other collectables going that route? People are so unaware of what a process of product development takes. I have a research project that has taken nearly 5 years and we're only at a mock up stage! Look at how many decades it has taken for the automotive industry? Think about how much funding (both private and public - let alone being tied to competing countries) has had to take place in order to get to where we are now and how competition has played an intrinsic aspect of innovation? It is staggering to me how unaware the collecting community is and are so quick to criticize. Yes, I would agree that CGC might benefit from being more open about their processes but to what end? more public scrutiny? You should also be aware that this scrutiny is coming from a select few detractors and I would expect to a large degree that many are in fact satisfied. It is like yelp reviews. A few complaints really can kill a business if we let them.
So you are controlling the market, directly controlling the grade ratios and then the publishers can sell the rejects? The publisher is selling their own slabbed comics? Complete market manipulation.
These mass submissions are usually the online retailers submitting their exclusive covers.
I'm just waiting for the grade snobs to cry about why there aren't grader notes to explain why they didn't get 10s
shouldn't they put graders notes?
@@scribble5057 because it's a waste of time on 9.8 or better.
Sorry but CGC don't have transparency for collectors and they are trying to move toward 9.9 and 10. they should have Notes available for all grade, even charge a premium why some books get down graded. they have already hard time with 9.8 and now them starting to head toward 9.9 they don't have any proper heading.
Neat to see the "math" behind the ratio of what can make it to a 10.0. Obviously it depends on a lot of variables, but a handy back-of-the-napkin calculation - 400 submissions to 7 perfects.
especially if factoring in on consistent manufacturer's defects
You guys ripped one of my comics once at your signature series. I was pretty pissed off, spent a pile of money on a signature and it's worth like $40 now...
What bothers me about you checking the books. Is every human has a slight oil residue that comes from our fingers. Why don't you have gloves on while you are touching the books?
Dry hands are fine. You can actually damage books having gloves on. Per the video, personally handling the books is limited in touch anyways with the backer board on the bottom.
@@Jerry11011 they have gloves that are designed for the collector industry. I have powdered free gloves that I use all the time. For my higher price books and art. And they never get damaged from the gloves.

By definition a 9.8 isn't a perfect book.🤣 It's hilarious that people think 9.8s are the upper echelon of grades. It's always been on a 10 point scale.
@@leemires5315 yeah but those grades were anomaly’s to get , now those grades will be be as common as a 9.8
I really do suggest that everyone try to go through a pre screening exercise of a stack of books from a publisher/printer if you have the opportunity. Even if it would be to take a stack off the shelves at your LCS and select a book that might be of a higher quality. You might than appreciate how much time and effort that it takes and perhaps also have some ideas of how to make the process safer at which point you can provide informed suggestions. Through my years of collecting I've had that opportunity of stacks of books and apply that same discerning eye on my weekly purchases at the LCS. That way I am happier with what I buy and more knowledgeable of what I submit.
Great video, Shawn!
So the way it was shipped looked absolutely perfect. And yet its apparently a handling defect but is not on cgc? Id say its more plausible that this grader damaged a few comics. He was slapping them down all over the place and then you see corner blunts. Wonder why.
They were absolutely NOT shipped perfectly. lol The only way to get even close to perfect is by putting each comic in a top loader of some sort. If anything has even a millimeter of play on any side, top, or bottom, it's going to move around. Especially in a box.
Can’t wait to meet your reps in person at a local con coming up. I will be grilling them about what has been going on recently…
Just do ur research before hand because from the looks of these comments .... 😬
