    I've seen a couple of these videos now . Is this a accurate representation of your grading process or a summary because it looks a little cursory to me . When I grade after making sure the book is complete and not restored. I count every noticeable tick, crease and spot. I start every book at 10.0 or 100 if you will and work my way down. You seem to take off huge amounts for big defects but hardly mention or even count smaller ones just noting that they exist. Having noted that we still seem to end up with relatively the same score wich is why I wondered about the completeness of the video.

    If they took the staples out do you think this could have been a combination of pages from two different books? Perhaps they had two incomplete books and made one complete book instead. You mention some pages had tanning at the top and others did not - not sure how likely that is to happen but I would assume most tanning is always uniform among pages? As you mention at 3:20 the difference between the pages behind the centerfold seems noticeably different.

    • @nickzee7723

    So a miswrap rarely affects the grade, and a cover detached from one staple can still earn an 8.5. Interesting. I have been much too harsh with my grading!

    I'm always hearing how books with dark covers are harder to find in high grade. Does this mean a crease on a black cover detracts more from a book's grade than a crease on a white cover? I I would hope that these professional grading companies would detect every flaw in a book regardless of its cover, so is it that books with darker covers are graded more harshly or are books with lighter covers given a pass if the flaw isn't immediately visible?

    • @nickzee7723
      @nickzee7723 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      One of the first books I ever had graded by CGC was G.S. X-Men #1. Back then (2003), books had to be pre-graded for submission. It was very clean and the pre-grade was 8.5. When I got the book back, I was astonished at the 5.5 grade it received. I called CGC and they read me the notes on the book: "Indentation on the white cover from someone writing on a piece of paper on it." Was about 2 inches, like someone's name. Holding the capsule to the light I could barely make it out but it was there. I removed the book from the case and sold it on ebay and got a lot better price than 5.5 graded would have brought.

    • @anthonyneofotistos5331
      @anthonyneofotistos5331 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From my understanding, a crease that breaks color is judged harsher than a crease that does not. A crease on a black cover is more likely to show the white paper underneath, thereby breaking color, than, say, a crease on a white cover, where there is no color difference.

    • @Supertomscustoms
      @Supertomscustoms 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anthonyneofotistos5331 That makes sense, but if a crease is significant enough to break color I would assume that would show up on a white cover as well just not be as apparent. If they're looking at these things with a jeweler's loop they should be catching it. Even if it doesn't technically break color, there should be some minor fraying to the paper fibers. So I guess their grading doesn't necessarily factor in the type or severity of damage unless it directly effects eye appeal?

    • @Redskies453
      @Redskies453 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rarity is important in collectables because it increases market value. If it's just for display I guess you can just pick up any old copy on the cheap. Won't stop some buyers seeking a higher grade for investment value though.

    • @gfblack5307
      @gfblack5307 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Redskies453 I understand what makes a piece valuable, I just think that the price spread, say between a 7 and a 9, encased in plastic, is silly.

    • @gfblack5307

      As an aside, are there younger buyers buying golden age, or is it mostly aging boomers? Something to consider when investing. I sold quality antiques in the 90's that are now worth a fraction of what they once sold for.

    Rather than take the worst of each resto to come up with C-2, since the C was not 2 and the 2 was not C, wouldnt it be more fair to average them = B-1.5? Or in the resto note in the center of the slab write: "Restoration includes: small amount color touch on cover (A-2), centerfold re-attached with glue (C-1)." Also you should stop using ugly purple labels. No reason tbey cant be blue as long as the restoration is noted on the label. I display my collection and wouldnt mind restored comics when it comes to very rare books, but I avoid them because the purple labels stand out like sore thumbs and ruin the display. Also, why have Qualified? Thats basically a What If grade which ignores the defect... Dumb! I really like CGC compared to the ugly-ass-label-CBCS-slow-pokes but you should copy the very few good ideas they have such as blue labels for restored and qr codes on label for graders notes.

    Ok lets start with a clean surface. No lets start with white archival gloves first, i dont know any serious collector who hasnt seen smudge or finger print marks on a comic book because the oils from you hand and fingers easily transit to any paper surface very easily which of course devalues the book and no one can dispute this point period.

    • @TriWaZe
      @TriWaZe 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      He mentioned why in the other video. It's to feel the comic. And at the end of the day I highly doubt the comic is going to pick up oil damage from such a short handling time. From what I would assume are very recently sterilized hands. And if all that didn't convince you the comic would have already been graded at that point. Unless the grader is scummy and ruined the book and then graded his own damage or you end up with a bad grade it truly didn't deserve, you probably aren't going to be cracking it back open.

      You don't average the restoration you take the worst of the restoration. Worst Quality was a C, worst Quantity was a 2. Giving it a Restored grade of B 2 would be not be disclosing the amateur restoration in this case. I was a little surprised that the 1 and 2 did not equal a 3, but that would be based on such a small amount of glue that it did not reach the 3 threshold...kind of a freebie for Quantity.

    • @briansheridan8834
      @briansheridan8834 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't understand why glue is considered restoration, since it is not normally part of the book. I consider it the same as writing on the comic only with glue. If glue is not part of the original book that needed to be restored it cannot be a restoration.
