I think dark horse's binding and page layout on the berserk deluxe is the gold standard for omnibus binding. In the double-page spreads, they usually have a millimeter of blank space from the middle to prevent any gutter loss.
If you see other paperback oversized manga, like vagabond vizbig, you'll notice that they leave a white blank line in the inside, so if the binding is stiff, you still have the full art visible.

If I owned one of those I would be too scared to open it. Honestly, it feels like just cracking open the cover would cause irreparable damage. But its still a very interesting and informative video. Good work. Even if you're not a collector, you can still learn a lot of interesting information.
This is a very good tutorial. As for the gutter issues with splash pages, it’s the fault of the layout artist/typesetter because that can be addressed in the preparation of the print file. (I work in publishing and printing and we encounter this a lot with new artists.)

Probably a pretty good sign that if you're interested in reading comics rather than just collecting them, you should stick to more normal sized editions :p
Extremely helpful tutorial. I just got my first omni, Uncanny X-Men Vol 1 by Claremont which I absolutely love so far. I know I've only began to scratch the surface of his run so I'm ready to be continuously in awe. I was so anxious to start reading so I'm coming to this video a week later to see how it's properly done lol. I still went through the process and the eye looks pretty good and nothing is shifted to one side which is relieving. I plan to get more omni's in the future mainly of characters I've always wanted to read in Marvel but never knew where to start. Now I have some idea thanks to all the content and information on your channel and it's been a highly enjoyable experience. Glad I know what to do for my next omni before I start reading. Keep up the fantastic work from a newbie that's just starting out!!

I have the Gail Simone Red Sonja omnibus and it's relatively smaller than most omnibus, so thankfully it seems lile everything was fine (the eye has shifted but not too bad). Will definitely keep this in mind now if I buy any more Omnibus in the future
Man wish I saw this video earlier. I got the JLA Grant Morrison omnibus and I'd literally opened it 3 times and noticed the binder or spine cracking from the bottom.
I learned about this on Nerdventures, now known as Sequentials Deluxe, about 4 1/2 years ago, and I've been doing it ever since. Glad that you did this. Never know how some new collector is going to come upon this idea. I do it with all my omnis.
Yeah, I met Will at Baltimore con in 2018. Nice guy, Its a shame he sold off most of his collection and now focuses on his personal movies...not a shame, just he is a really nice and knowledable guy.

@@Couick27 Luckily the upcoming _Silver Surfer_ Omni-reprint should very likely have a sewn binding (compared to the glued binding of the first printing), which will be a major upgrade all by itself.
nisus8 I definitely expect it to be a upgrade but it’s still sewn binding on the original...it’s my most hated/loved omni...I love the Buscema art but hate the binding...it’s been pretty much unreadable for me

Omar, this videos is brilliant. Since following your channel I've been increasing my HC and omnibus collection. What's your advice regarding the storage of these? Alot of forums say that over time the pages will drag on the spines when upright. Have you experienced this?

Just opened *Fantastic Four Vol 1 by Hickman* and stretching it Seen a tip from someone to *have the book upside down whilst stretching to help avoid spoilers* - thankfully got through doung a stretch without noticing much from the pages. Any idea on whether to do more than one stetch with all books, or large omnibus (1,000pages+, etc) Hopefully the comment helps wirh algorithms so other newer readers and collectors spot this before roughly reading their new titles.

I stretched the spine of immortal hulk two days ago just as this video demonstrates, and observed a spine damage. IST refused to issue a replacement, claiming it was my action that lead up to the damage.
🤔 made my children watch this video, twice. No spoilers here, I buy the books, they stretch out the spine, at the dinner table on a clean towel with clean hands. Next! 😆

I would like to ask another question related to the right conservation of omnibus: I'm talking about the flattening of spine due to the weight of the pages, wich tend to bend in the middle of the volume when the thickness is huge. In this way the spine tend to become flat in the upper zone. Have you got some advice? Thank you!
I don't know if its true or not, but I've also heard that its better to store these thick, omnibus books on your bookshelf in a flat, horizontal position instead of vertically because there's less chance of the pages pulling apart from the spine.
Great video! I have a question regarding the ribbon in the spine. A new TTRPG book of mine (a beautiful hardback which I absolutely love) does not have a ribbon at all. It appears to just be glued together like a trade paperback inside of a hardcover. Yet it still has a really nice "eye" and flexes well as you open and flip through the book. You said in another video that most of the ribbons they make these days are purely for cosmetic effect, so does this mean that I can rest assured that my book is not merely glued, but is in fact sewn, and probably even sewn pretty well? I think the one book I did it three times on was Final Crisis and that damn thing was so thick that it only helped a bit. :)
you should put a cardboard cleat under the pages to prevent the volume from sagging.
I’ve heard of others doing this or styrofoam, but I’ve never had issues in the 15 plus years of buying these huge books.

always lay the spine flat. On a table or your lap or bed. It keeps the weight from shifting.

I stretched the spine of immortal hulk two days ago just as this video demonstrates, and observed a spine damage. IST refused to issue a replacement, claiming it was my action that lead up to the damage.
🤔 made my children watch this video, twice. No spoilers here, I buy the books, they stretch out the spine, at the dinner table on a clean towel with clean hands. Next! 😆

I would like to ask another question related to the right conservation of omnibus:
I'm talking about the flattening of spine due to the weight of the pages,
wich tend to bend in the middle of the volume when the thickness is huge.
In this way the spine tend to become flat in the upper zone. Have you got some advice? Thank you!
The only advice I have is I've seen styrofoam blocks under the papers.

I don't know if its true or not, but I've also heard that its better to store these thick, omnibus books on your bookshelf in a flat, horizontal position instead of vertically because there's less chance of the pages pulling apart from the spine.
I’ve heard this too. There is going to be some page sagging over time, but I’ve seen people use styrofoam blocks. To keep that from happening

Great video! I have a question regarding the ribbon in the spine. A new TTRPG book of mine (a beautiful hardback which I absolutely love) does not have a ribbon at all. It appears to just be glued together like a trade paperback inside of a hardcover. Yet it still has a really nice "eye" and flexes well as you open and flip through the book. You said in another video that most of the ribbons they make these days are purely for cosmetic effect, so does this mean that I can rest assured that my book is not merely glued, but is in fact sewn, and probably even sewn pretty well? Thanks for the great content!
