Unlocking 2001 to 2005 GM Class II RDS Stereo Systems

  • This is a demonstration of what the radio does, and it shows which chip where, needs to be removed in order for the radio to work with out taking it to the dealership and paying them $50 to $100 to unlock the radio for you. This saves you their excuses, and saves you money to get tunes back in your car.
Side Effects to Consider before doing this:
    1. AM/FM/CD Only Decks will always have the Tape icon on.
    2. All Units will display CAL ERR upon first power up (goes away in 3 seconds).
    3. When powered on a bench out of car, the display will dim it self slightly (BCM tells them to dim or not. Defaults to Dim without BCM signal)
    4. I believe this is a wiring issue in the harness, but I have heard they can lose their Presets each time power is removed.
    5. The very very later units, 2005 to the end of this style radio, need a digital "On" Signal from the vehicles BCM, so if you wish to use it on a bench, the older ones don't need a digital signal to power on. It will see that signal in car and still power on.
*This system DOES NOT WORK* On radios above 2006. Later GM radios use an 11Bit, or 29Bit Data BUS (CAN, or GMLAN). All these radios need a digital ON Signal to work. There is an Adapter to send them the "On" signal for sale around ebay.
This strange system has also prevented car stereo "benchers" like me from operating the units out of the car. That system defeated, it opened a whole new range of car stereos for us.
Remember, if you own the car, you own anything in it. As such, you own the radio installed in the dash board, and there is no reason for the manufacturer to tell you, you can't change your radio, or install a better one, or anything with out paying them a fee. And really, ask your self "Who would steal a factory radio?". I stay factory in my own car because if curious eyes peek in and see a factory deck in the dash, they'll ignore it and move on to the next car!
Disclaimer: If you screw your radio up, that's not my fault. I hold no liability what-so-ever. This is a do at your own risk modification. If you do this and do it incorrectly, and turn your radio in to a paper weight, I am not liable in any way, shape, or form for your mistake. If you are uncomfortable doing this, then take the radio to a dealer and have them do it the correct way.
I had nothing to lose. These won't work in my Saturn, I bought these to add to my vast GM Stereo Collection, and to aid in figuring out the security in these, and how they were built.
I purchased my units from vehicles that are now gone, crushed, and sent to be melted down. They served their life, and now their parts, these radios included, are all that remain. I purchased them aid on a form site I am a member of in getting these radios to play nice. I have receipts to verify where I purchased my units.

Works like a charm. Mine was the type with easily accessible chip. Used pliers and twisted it off. No problems with "cassette light". Radio presets remain after shutting off. Has "calibration error" message when first starting radio.

This is great advice and it worked great with the adverse effects. Most of them were no problem, but mine would always go back to track one on the cd everytime you shut the key to the off position. So some memory is forgotten by taking out the chip. There is another option that I found by accident scrolling youtube for other suggestions. My main proble was that the face plate lights were mostly burnt out and the cd player did not work. I purchased another radio from a junk yard which I unlocked by taking out the chip. Heres the best part! Once I discovered that the cd player worked in the new radio, I then switched out the cd player and the face plate. Guess what? Now I have a new working factory cd player with no issues! There are videos on how to take the face plate and cd player out, very simple.

I just want to confirm that if I pull the chip out that the radio is now forever unlocked? I guess my question is it's not going to just run for 10 minutes at a time with the chip out it will work normally with a couple errors correct? Thanks

Love you video! FYI The reason you’re losing power to the radio after removing the chip is because the radio has no way to communicate with the vehicles communications module that hooks to your on star as well. These radios don’t use a typical 12 V signal for power the module actually sends an 8 V signal. That’s why when you put an aftermarket radio in the wiring kit comes with a splice wire for 12 V source. I also had an issue with my 6 disc changer Bose system after a CD got stuck I unhook the fuse radio went in and went and limp mode so and wouldn’t play the CD player. Radio just flashes the CD emblem. Remove the radio took the top cover off and got the CD out but still just flashes. Nobody has had a fixture other than replacing the radio but I found a fix. Like I said the radio is controlled by that module by pulling the fuse you’re not shutting down the module you have to unhook the battery and Touch the cable ends together for about 30 seconds to a minute and that will put all modules in the vehicle to sleep. I work for a dealer I have to do this sometimes to certain vehicles that do weird things sometimes you just have to reset the modules and everything goes back to normal. Again thanks for the video.

This process worked. The board looked different on my radio but it still worked. I removed the chip with the numbers "9355093" on it. Cons: radio does not hold the programmed stations. When vehicle is turned back on, radio defaults to preset fm station.
So far it's not an issue but have to select which CD to play after each vehicle start-up.

This works AWESOME! What you need is a tiny craft X-ACTO knife, fresh blade. (The silver pencil kind.) Put a 2005 Impala ray-dee-oh into my 2005 Avalanche. For some reason, the number 5 preset works after power off/power up. Kicks as hard as a 49-year-old needs. Aftermarket is shite. (That's what I took out that was dead as a door nail.) If I want to get fancy, I might install the AUX jack, or just grab an FM combobulator and call it a day. And now, back to The Tragically Hip!

Thanks for the advice. I have this problem now and the darn thing just won't budge from the "LOCKED" display. The funny thing is, I had just purchased the vehicle (2002 GMC Sonoma) the previous week. The radio worked just fine for awhile, and I was able to set all the presets and play around with the buttons to see what function did what, and then I was able to set the correct time. Shortly after that it just decided to "LOCK" with no reason. The radio was not changed, the battery did not die, and I am quite sure it came with the vehicle. I can not get it to do anything now (and the cassette player does not work, but I knew that when I bought the truck). I'm about to pull out the whole damn radio and throw it to the cows to stomp on. I hate the thing! Lets face it, nobody is stealing "any" radios anymore, and if they are that hard up for a radio, then have fun with it. With this one, stealing it would be doing me a favor...

If you are not hearing AUDIO after doing this, then the issue is that that the stereo was programmed to use a different AMP. GM used BOSE and Non-BOSE AMPs that communicate with the radio before producing audio. The radio has to be matched to the AMP. I'm not sure how to bypass that

I'm trying to put in an aftermarket stereo and I don't know what to do with the second plug (since there is only one harness plug input on the aftermarket). I tried to just ignore it and use the standard wiring harness in my car stereo want turn on. Any help is GREATLY appreciate! I'm stuck with my dash apart. I've never seen this two plug setup. Aftermarket stereos only have one harness plug. Thanks!

I pulled my GM RDS radio from a 2003 Chevy Avalanche and was unable to get a working display even though the unit worked while installed in the vehicle. The radio never indicated locked; just no display. I connected 12V + battery power to pins B1 and B2 and Ground to pin A12 on the 24 pin connector at the back of the radio based on what I saw on the video. I also removed the locking chip as shown in the second radio in the video. When I push the power button, the lights on the faceplate illuminate but still no display. I have not connected a speaker at this point since I never got the display to work. Are there any other connections I need to try before giving up on this one?

I followed along with all of the removal instructions but after looking up the product number, I realized my stereo was completely different than the video's online. I have pulled it apart but the chipboard looks a little different. I am afraid to pull any of the chips but if I can't find the chip to pull, the radio is worthless anyway because it is locked up. This is the original factory radio for the 2007 trailblazer I have and it just locked up last week. I don't want to pay the $120 diagnosis fee to tell me that there is probably a short in the board somewhere.

Does presets work after removing and can you explain better on moving wire on rear of radio. Do you have to move wire and tie together to get away from antitheft???? Thank you

I am trying to put a 2004 Colorado Cd player in my daughters barbie Jeep. The radio isn't locked if I put it into my truck. Do I need to remove the chip? Or just move the wire over one space? Or both?
