    You mentioned that you were fixing everything that GM did wrong, from what I can tell you are putting it back to what GM originally built and the secondary vendor messed up. I have a 05 5500 ex U haul truck with the gas motor. This truck has been the best purchase that I have ever made, after cutting the frame and adding a 16 foot flat bed it performs great every time I use it.
    I’m glad to see you making the the truck you need rather going to buy what someone else is trying to sell, that is what got you to this spot in the first place. Good luck!

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      keep watching. you will see what i mean by fixing everything gm did wrong. the old uhaul c5500's are very capable trucks for a gas engine. i would say far better than the only other available truck its size at that time which was a ford f450 v10. dont misunderstand, the cab is why i bought the truck....the rest of it was not what i wanted. i knew if i bought it and kept it long enough, i would be doing this build.

      @@j.c.smithprojects as you mentioned the cab space and how high it sits on the road helps with visibility, I weigh in at 12,500lbs unloaded that makes a big difference with handling when hauling on the truck or with a trailer. Good luck with the build!!

    Dear J.C. Smith projects family.
    👍👌👏 Uuuuh, this is very interesting. Selling all those very special parts will give you a lot of budget to build what you really want/need/like. This double cab dually pickup truck is definitely bigger than I thought it is.
    I'm eagerly looking forward to watch the next part of the series. Please nevertheless don't forget Misses Smith's micro dump truck.

    The day my last 4500-8500 series GM got sold was a great day for me. I agree with you on the Duramax, the crappy GM van interior and the lousy wiring harness and ABS/brake wiring. The weight was a problem for me trying to run them commercially and legally- my 03 Duramax dump had a 16k GVWR and a curb weight of just over 13k with a driver- so it was pretty useless if you wanted to run legal. Looking forward to the series!

    I'm always leery of aftermarket upfitters. The quality is usually pretty shoddy. At the dealership I work for, we got a couple Express conversion vans through that were done by Explorer. Seems like everything was held in place with self tapping sheetmetal screws. The exhausts didn't clear the plastic fenders, so they ended up melting them(added tips to remedy it). Also had to move the anchors for a cooler because it wouldn't latch. I feel bad for whoever has to work on them down the road.

    i have a 2008 4500 i like it i dont drive everyday with it it does not have a bed but i ended up putting one of thoes flat bed units on it with the hole for the goose hole i like it its 8 ft wide 12 ft long going to lowes or homedepot is a breeze to load also can fit 6 pallets up there i dont have the monroe conversion so the seats are that like that vinyl but i got one of thoes beds for the back seat, i also have the link air ride but a completely different kit mine is a arm from in front of rear axle to under the axle with u bolts and a good year bag in the back definitely works well it was a x ambulances so it was for that i assume for loading people, my frame is 11.5 feet behind the cab so i have the 12 foot flat bed

      i tow a good bit and when i do its heavy. my trailer weighs over 10k and i usually put 15-20k on it. the more gears the better. keeping the rpms in their optimum hp and torque range is what makes a great pulling and enjoyable truck to drive.

      Do you have any thoughts on the L10 Cummins ? I have a very low milage one 310hp I have one more rust free c5500 I would like to see if I could squeeze it and a 13 speed in that truck it would be a really good tow rig. We tow boats gross 40k at most with truck.

      i have one as well. i measured it. i think its too tall. over 49" i think it would be into the dash panel unless you lift the body 6". i am looking for the right 13 spd now. i want to climb the hills in southern ohio and west virginia at 65-70...not 25-35 like it is now.

    I drove to Monroe in Wisconsin in 2006 to get side steps installed. When I finally found their shop after getting lost they laughed and said all the G.P.S. systems took people on a wild goose chase...I said WHY Didn't you tell me that when I called an hour ago? I should have known better and left but I had already driven 90 minutes there. The steps I wanted wouldn't fit even though the salesman told me it would. They broke one of my heated mirrors which I didn't notice until I was 30 minutes away, had to drive back and argue with them until they installed a new one. The wiring for the lights on the step weren't secured so when ice built up on them it ruined the lights. The company is a complete joke.

    Once you removed the bed, there is a subframe under it that has a rubber bushing. You did not know what that was for. The subframe is there to protect the bed from being ripped apart from the stress the truck would put on it. Monroe says not to operate the truck with the tailgate down to prevent the bed coming apart.

    I just picked up a 2008 5500 from a construction company. It's dirty as hell inside, but it's the color you're looking for (cloth seats). The drivers seat air ride system is deflated... I haven't gotten to it yet. The panels are all broken. But I'm interested in your seats if you've still got them. How can I get in contact with you?

      like i said in the video, the cab height and room is like no other. i had 3 of these identical trucks at 1 time. this one, one with a western hauler bed and one with a semi 5th wheel on an 84" cab & chassis ( i sold this one but still have two.)
