I have an electrical video coming out in about a week on an older house. I live in an older house as well. The previous owner lived here since 1978. Not sure on the history after that.
Can honestly say I replaced many of these the hard way. Some didn’t have attic access and others I cut thru floor boards to fit 2x6 joist spacers for new metal boxes. This new style is perfect example of pay a premium price to save loads of time.
@John Lawson I happened upon this because wifey wanted a huge light over our table. Prefab modular house with crawl space for attic. Replaced most light boxes when we moved in years ago. First I had to wire outlets and lights in attic to even see and work in there. Cut through r30 insulation to get to those boxes and custom cut 2x6 boards for new metal boxes. I put this type in ,in less then 1/2 hour, with out crawling thru attic and almost no mess. Almost everything in life is subjective. Unbelievable time saver in my opinion.
I used to get mad when people would say, “ that much ?! But you were only here for 30 minutes?!” I learned early on to help educate my clients that they are not just paying me for my time while at their property. They are paying me for the entire time it takes to get the job done, and that includes time to go pick up materials, even if they are on in the trailer before they ever thought of the project, that time gets added into having the exact part they need me to have to get the job done. They are also paying for me to have my trailer/truck to be able to go get and bring materials to the property. When I have to get this detailed with some clients, I remind them that the reason they called me is because either they didn’t have the knowledge or the time or both to do the project (maybe not in those exact words) and so there is a cost to using someone else’s time and knowledge to get the project done. Another great video, thank you for helping to educate the people who call on us to help them get their projects done.
So it takes an hour at the home depot ta collect a bunch of stuff to have on hand, then you charge the next 20 clients and make a killin.you are awsome.....rip off....I add the cost of products if they are wort it,not wire nuts and suchlike,my time pays for the little things...that's why we don't make minimum wage....
Turning the switch off may save you a trip to the basement but you MUST still check for power at the fixture. Would be plain silly to assume that the person who wired that room brought power through the switch and not the fixture especially in an older home. I’ve even seen newer homes with power at the fixture. NEVER TRUST ANYONE ELSES WORK.
If the power is in the light box and you turn the switch off and only touch the neutral and switch leg that you removed from the light you will not get shocked.
@@Justanotherwhiteguy4U sometimes, especially older houses, power doesn’t always go to the switch, it’s goes to the fan first, and gets reversed, so the switch can be off, but power will still be in the fan. Best bet for homeowners is to switch the breaker off to be safest
I've stopped messing with running 14/3 and doing double switches for retrofit fans. Many of the nicer fans come with a wireless remote or you can buy one separate on Amazon for less than $15. Then, you can control light/fan and adjust fan speed (L/M/H), which you can't do from a double switch. The remotes have a holster that mounts on the wall, or you can put it on the nightstand or whatever. Easier install (costs customer way less than pulling wire) and gives them the same/better benefits.
This, & gadgets like motion sensor light bulbs, will put basically skilled electricians out of work one day. Vocational grads need to up their game & knowledge.
@@droolbunnyxo9565 so those motion lights and remotes will wire houses, buildings, troubleshoot, and everything else an electrician does? Must be some powerful technology.
I despise remotes. Home depot has a unit(Hunter) that fits in the wall outlet and gives you complete control of the fan. They come with dip switches in case you install more than one unit in your house so you're not turning one off and turning another one on else where in the house from the same controller.
As a licensed electrician great explanation love the fact that you explained the difference between the different type of electrical box rating. This man knows his stuff.
I'm not a licensed electrician, but a career Navy electrician, and I'm SHOCKED to see this man trust his life to a wall switch vs. turning off the breaker and then verifying that there is no power on the wires like a SMART electrician.
Great vid! One thing I like to do when working on an angled or vault, is attach a string to the brace and let a bunch hang down out of the hole while getting it up through the hole.. That way, if it tips and slides down the vault, I have that line to retrieve that bracket. Yes, I did learn that trick the hard way...
I have never thought about treating this task as two different tasks. I have always just charged a little more and took the hit for it not being a fan rated box. This opened my eyes and I will consider it two different tasks in the future. Thanks

I like like the hammer handle for pushing up the insulation tip though it might still poke through the vapour barrier. One problem I ran into in a house with a 3rd floor loft was that the centre light in a second floor was in a 11" joist space, too narrow for those remodel supports. One joist was, I think, a builtup beam to support a loft wall.
Then you take the bar and cut it, re-insert the threaded thing on the end, and you can fit it between the framing. It takes some time to customize, but it can be done.
American prices do seem high for labor compared to here in the UK I had my whole house required including networking cables (brick house so channeling up walls) took two electricians a week..... in USD it worked out to less than $4,000
You still have to check if its hot, if they looped the wire and sent power to the light and then to the switch you will still get hit have to turn the breaker off.
That's interesting. I guess if hole for recessed light is bigger than old construction fan bracket, you will have to patch hole with sheetrock first and then drill a smaller hole for ceiling fan box. If hole is the same size as ceiling fan box, then it would be same/similar work as shown on video.
I have a question! So if you did end up having to install another switch one for the fan speed and one for the light of that fan, how would you do so? Is there two different load lines on the fan, one for fan speed and one for the light on the fan ? Just curious
So doing this does what to the vapour barrier? usually the vapour barrier is tuck taped to these things for a seal. How to do you repair this seal from below now?
My 60 y/o house has 4 ceiling fans. All 4 have the lights run off the switch with the fan always hot. I've seen so many in other houses that the switch runs the fan too. Is there some point in time that home builders stopped running 3 conductor up to the ceiling fixtures?
I bought my home 10 years ago, and the electrical drawings, shows ceiling fan on every room, which I though it was great, not so much I'm installing a fan on every room , every thing was going great until I get to the last room the one with cathedral ceiling to my surprise the installers did not install a fan bracket and there is no room to replace the one that is in there because they install the bracket under the thruster beam, question how do I install the fan without making a mess? I should mention that the bracket seat right on the pick of the gable.
Thank you for preaching the truth for handyman from our perspective. Your pricing is the same as mine. The people who scoff aren't the ones I want for clients! Had any jobs where you ended up eating it? I have.
Seeing this tells me I need to check the box in the room we want to add a fan. Fortunately, I have full attic access, so if it's not supported (and I might as well check the other rooms) I can easily do that from the attic!
Handyman, 1st the caffine makes you shaky, then you get to a point that you need glasses, then you end up working off of memory and you leave your glasses in the truck all of the time and cut back on coffee from 20 cups a day to 2 or 3. Oh and you start getting a gut LOLOL. As for the charges, I say get it cause you are worth it! and like you said, I have been in more houses than I can count where the ceiling light box has broke from the weight of the ceiling fan or hanging sideways and slapping the popcorn off ceiling and they say, "I thought about shutting it off, but I needed the light on and was afraid to get under it to pull the string"
If people could grasp the concept of a market they would understand why you charge the prices you do. Tbh it seems like you could charge even more. Good job
this makes me wonder about my house. built 89, 1 for a ceiling light but it had ceiling fans in all the rooms. Did they put those there originally or someone put them in after and not do something like this.
I see your air pressure controller on the visor ...do you have a video about that equipment on your truck? Is it effective for a standard (bumper-pull) trailer?
Great job and your price is on point. Where I live we have an online community group where people post about everything you can imagine one thing that makes me angry is when they post “looking for someone to____________ for a REASONABLE price”. First off I’m very reasonably priced and second they are assuming everyone is unreasonable. It’s just a red flag for me that they are cheap or can never be satisfied and I stay away. Your thoughts?
Is turning the breaker off that big of a deal? Seems like it can prevent a bad accident if a neutral wire (common here in Ireland and the UK) was shared with a different switch in a different room. Also, surely it's better to teach best practice and validate the wires are dead with a phase tester than relying on the switch entirely?
I want to thank you for the demonstration. I have three of those old-work fan boxes sitting in the basement waiting to be installed, and it's always nice to see how they're "supposed" to work before getting into a project. :) Now my issue is I have short ceilings (7' 6") and I'm having trouble finding a fan I like the look of that my 6' father-in-law isn't gonna be bouncing his head off of...
Took down a fan hung from the dining room table ( the just just look dated and ugly) and replaced it with a light and think nothing of it. A few days ago I put on a new fan, the box on the cieling had practically no support -- had to get the reinforced bar with a built in box to support my new fan....

Able to do romex makes that job alot easier. If that exsitng box was hard piped that would be double the time. To add switches for light and fan you would have to fish a flexible conduit up and over the ceiling rafters. And in most cases it wouldn't fit above. Then fish down the wall with flexible conduit. Triple the amount of money for material. And double the labor cost. Got yourself a full day doing that

porque no le pusistes una caja de metal ya que tenias la madera donde la podias atornillar??
If people could grasp the concept of a market they would understand why you charge the prices you do. Tbh it seems like you could charge even more. Good job
this makes me wonder about my house. built 89, 1 for a ceiling light but it had ceiling fans in all the rooms. Did they put those there originally or someone put them in after and not do something like this.
Good question.
Easier to get a fan that has a wireless remote control that you can mount on the wall. Can run the fan and light from that.
I see your air pressure controller on the visor ...do you have a video about that equipment on your truck? Is it effective for a standard (bumper-pull) trailer?
I love it. I use it for my travel trailer. I have the info on my 3rd channel. I might put it up on my business channel too.
I was hoping you were going to upload a video today ;)
You're hilarious man. I love it.
👍👍😀 love the voice changes!
I wouldn't worry much about it. You won't ever see anybody asking: looking for "unreasonable high prices" handyman to work for me.
I didn’t get the breakdown
Was your total charge 150 +- and the homeowner total parts expense 450+- ..?
Thank you
I heard it as $175 for the ceiling fan light kit (over 8’ under 11’) and $250 to remove the old box and install the fan $425 total ($175 + $250).
Stop and rewind. It's amazing.
Subbed to both channels now, I was missing out.
Does you price include the fan or that just install only?
I specifically tell you in the video. Watch it again and get back to me.
#1 channel on TH-cam
All i do is sit on my couch at night and watch this dudes channel.
Business is business and if you and your customer see the benifits in your business relationship, then you're doing it right.
So good Handyman! LMAO hahaha!! Thanks man
Took down a fan hung from the dining room table ( the just just look dated and ugly) and replaced it with a light and think nothing of it. A few days ago I put on a new fan, the box on the cieling had practically no support -- had to get the reinforced bar with a built in box to support my new fan....
Nice. Keep up the good work.
Very well narrated but video should be more zoomed on what he's working on
So is it legal?
This is the first vid I watched on your channel because my wonderful lady and I found out we’re finally expecting again and HO BRRRAAAH I HAD SUB
It’s almost 3:20 at the time of this comment here on Kaua’i and I’m glad I found something worthy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Instead of another “how to /DIY” vid
From this first vid I’ve watched you’re producing phenomenal content, work ethic, TO THE POINT like a anesthesiologist
STRAIGHT TO THE LEARNIN VIEN 💉
Yet I didn’t understand the mullët logo during vid but YOU GON LEARN TODAY!!!
HAMMERED THAT LIKE BUTTON FSURE
🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾 Good on you Braddah man
THANK YOU!!!
Kaua'i is my favorite Island. I got married there in 15. We took the family back this past summer.
WOW! good money earned. Keep up the videos, love them.
Got yourself a full day doing that
Make a video and briefly talk about how you handle favors for friends and family. I’m sure you could get annoyed or overwhelmed eventually. Sweet videos, keep it up!
Smashed it!!!!!!
Thank you.
Good video man
Is it possible to center the fan in the peak of the ceiling? Yours looks off center.
Yeah, fan looks out of place. In my house there are a few that are attached to a triangle looking piece of wood where the 2 sides of ceiling meet.
