I had a front wheel flat on my BSA 650 in the middle of nowhere, coming back from Iran to Europe in 1962, and a truck driver stopped to help. He rummaged in the truck's toolbox, and came back with a hot patch, but no clamp. He put the tube on a flat rock, placed a patch over the puncture, lit it, and stuck his boot firmly on top of it. Thick smoke spurted out from under his boot, while he grinned at me in a "This is how it's done" sort of way. Suddenly the smoke turned to flames, he gave a loud scream, pulled off the now flaming boot, hurled it away into the sand, and jumped up and down holding his foot while trying to pull off a partly melted sock. I didn't dare laugh. Eventually, he gathered up his sock and boot, turned abruptly, walked back to his truck, got in and drove off without saying a single word.
Luckily, eventually someone came along with patches and glue and helped me fix it.

We did the same thing fixing our bicycle tires early 70's at the local Amoco station. Owned by a guy we called "Hacksaw" . His was a vise-type thing that when you pulled down the handle, it locked the tube and patch between a metal grate and rubber pad. Great memories indeed.

So true - kids nowadays have no common sense or desire to go hands-on, namely because of today's social standards and technology - damn video games and cell phones! Thank God for this video. I found one of these in a horse barn on my property a back and I was completely stumped, partly being because it's unbranded and looks as if it is meant to attach on the end of a pipe? But mostly because I'm 24 and didn't know such existed until now. Either way, my bike days are over as far as I'm concerned but what a neat contraption, would've loved to have had this knowledge over a decade ago!

Definitely more effective than rubber cement patches. I recall all my patches came out smooth and clean on top once removing the metal plate. The one you demonstrated must've been sitting on a shelf for a long while.

Paul Stuart you don’t use cement on these patched. The “flammable” material is some sort of fiber laced with an accelerant, probably a mix of magnesium and 365 other things that could cause you to grow a third eye. You bent a corner up to create a wick then light it. Nothing else needed.

The reason the vulcanizing patches were taken off the market is that they were exploding and people were getting their eyes taken out. Or so my friend's dad tells me. ;)
The reason no one knows how to fix a puncture nowadays is because you can't. The modern patch kits are designed only as a temporary solution and for only the smallest of punctures, so they are not suitable for about 95% of punctures. There are complicated modern solutions for punctures like tubeless tires...
