Yep it works, used this method for the front tire 1 month ago, perfect seal. The back tire had a flat a few days ago, did same thing, still holding. I botched the first try of sealing the back tire, I used too much glue, it did not hold. It only takes one small drop right on the pinhole leak to do the trick, then apply a small patch of paper and light pressure. I Leave the paper on.

I did this to an old bike I was ready to donate to goodwill and let someone else repair it. I rode it close to home occasionally and at 185lbs that I am and two months later, the tube still has 60psi. A step further I had to take a look see. I pulled out roughly twelve inches of deflated tube and saw that the glue actually formed a seal on the two holes. No cracking, just a smooth as glass bead of dry glue over the hole. I did use the Gorilla glue and allowed it to dry for about 10 minutes before inflating. I did donate it after the two months. Thanks for that tip.

Now that it is impossible to find inner tubes and patch kits anywhere in the Chicago area ( due to the shut down everyone has been biking and hitting up the local bike and sporting goods store for supplies) your home made patch method is a great idea for all of us with flats!

Honestly I didn't trust this method because superglue dries as a hard crystal and it would crack at the first spin, but I ran out of rubber glue and I had to try.
The result: It works!! It's been 3 days and there's not any leakage. I think I will not buy any fixing-kit again! this method is cheaper, easier and faster.
One advice: try to sand the surface before applying the glue, it will improve the adherence.
    Thanks a lot dude!

Use fine sandpaper (100 grit) around the hole making sure the rubber dust gets into the hole. Next put tiny amount of Super Glue on the hole with the rubber powder in it. Biggers hole can be repaired the same way except put a 1" disc of old inner tube over the hole that has been covered with a light coat of Super Glue. Also if you are careful you can repair cuts up to a half inch with super glue.

  • @TrojanHorse1959
    @TrojanHorse1959 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Great video and alternate tube repair idea Nick!
Super Glue alone will fix most leaks if they aren't too big. You just need to get it down into the hole so it can glue the rubber back together. Instead of paper you could also use a piece of an old tube or even a thick balloon to provide extra support to the patched area.

Awesome, My wife bumped into pavement with low tire pressure. Tube and tire both got 1/4 inch cut. Bought DAP($5.00) super glue from Menard. Applied DAP on Tire slit got cured perfectly outside and inside both. Put electric tape inside the tire to cover up uneven glue spot after an hour. Applied DAP on tube , then pressed piece of old tube on it. after an hour put all back on the rim. My wife biked 11 miles still air on it 100%. Great idea. Thanks DUDE. 👍👌🚲

Thanks, it helps. While I don't have many holes. Good story comes!
    Once I did a 10 000 km or 6K miles journey, without a kit.
After half way, I got one, in the middle of nowhere. It was fixed in half an hour, in a garage by nice Spanish people. Galvanized!
After I was riding in remote areas. Nothing for 10 miles or more. I have grown nervous. Finally, I bought a kit with 12 patches. I bought some food and gas for the camping stuff. After 10 minutes I found a perfect picnic place. I left the bike in the paved parking and had dinner a few meters away.
As I started my journey, I had a flat tire. The rear, of course. I fixed, and I had once again, noticed before take off. I checked in the creek. I had ..... 12 HOLES .... around the tube, evenly distributed !
Still today, I have no idea, how this is possible.
Luckily, I had a spare tube with one hole. I fixed that one, and I had no issues again, for thousands of miles! Tell me if pilgrimage is not spiritual.

Seems plausible in theory and my only concern would be the pretty good likelihood that water that gets into the tire will disintegrate the pulp fibers of the paper. Also I have learned to use a very soft rag to detect any sharp protrusions inside the tire as it is much easier on the fingers. Thanks for illustrating the importance of a correctly aligned air stem (especially in aggressive moto-cross riding because that reduces the chance of cutting the valve base with the edge of the rim hole during a jump, etc. The flag is a concern to some folks and I get that so if it detracts from your message it might be something that could be covered so as not to distract viewers.
Might also suggest putting a piece of cardboard over the pool table to keep the felt cuts to a minimum. Thanks for the video and keep up the good work.

The paper is not used as a patch. No patch material is required in this method. The paper is only to use during the sealing of the glue and to not get it on your fingers. This method needs no patching material as long as it's a pin hole size or close.

Thanks bud! This got me out of a pinch and saved me some $$$. To find the leak, I just inflated the tire and sprayed it down with soapy water and sure enough it began bubbling up right where the very tiny leak was. Turned out to be a very small sliver of glass. I did this before pulling out the tube to see if the tube actually split open or if it's a legit puncture. Doing it this way, I was able to locate the puncture on both the tire and the tube at the same time, remove the glass and then just pull out that portion of tube and do your patch and pop it back in. Hopefully this helps someone in addition to your excellent patch hack!

  • @superdude5587

Just did this but with a piece of an old tube instead of paper and worked very well! One thing to note about using tube though, don't make the piece to big and don't use tons of glue because it will cause that part of the tube to not be able to expand. I did this on my first one and it made my tire wobble a bit because of the unevenness of that one part of the tube.

Thanks, Nick, for sharing this. My son's scooter has 6" tires with inner tubes, one of which had a hole in it. I tried three times to patch the hole using my regular bicycle patch kit, but each time the repair failed (probably because the scooter tires require such high pressure, 85 PSI). Just FYI: Superglue is NOT recommended for patching inner tubes because it eats/degrades rubber and certain plastics. I tried this out of curiosity and it only lasted one day, granted your mileage may vary but if you use super glue eventually it will fail. Ideally you should just buy a new tube but if you must patch it for an instant fix then use either rubber cement or a plastic/rubber safe quick setting epoxy.

Dude this helped me big time. I did this diy patch this morning and tasted it out a couple rides and it's still holding. That is one really Good idea and smart as hell! A money saver for sure!

@Aghilas I was just going to my old comment to give an update. And dude it's been a good month n a half and still using that super glue n paper. I'm just mind boggled that it still holds. Now it's held from jumping off curbs, riding wheelies n slamming the tire back down. This young man has saved me money and other people so he's awesome as shit in My book!!!!

I work In a bike shop that's a smart idea for quick easy patch. When your on the road if you don't have a new tube to use then this is a good back up. I tried it works very well . I like the confederate flag cool

Blas C that’s possible but I’m not gonna watch a video, no matter how informative, if the dude has a flippin swastika flag either 😂 I’ll find the same info from someone who doesn’t have racist memorabilia hanging in their house 😅

Blas C who said I was hating i jus said I can’t watch it due to the history of the flag I don’t agree with what his ancestors fought for not all whites but particularly the ones in the south it’s true history we all learned in school I’m not hating and didn’t say he wanted to I just said I’m not supporting the video

  • @marchlander1

Instead of paper I would use piece of another tube. That however requires another tube, which should not be the problem if you're a bike guy. I was so pissed today on my comute to work, always have spare tube or something to fix a flat in my backpack, but not today. Why? I have no idea. Had to push the bike all the way to work, I missed one hour, I was pissed and tired, fuck me.
