Surprising that so many people don't know how to parch a tube. Growng up in the 50s & 60s every kid I knew was very familiar with patching tubes. Just another example of kids today having differnt priorities (i.e. social media, video games, etc.).
It's very surprising to me as well and I agree definitely different priorities we also got to remember back then we weren't a throwaway society as much as we are today instead of repairing something we can just buy something for dirt cheap and just replace it.. I'm still at the mindset of repair over replace if possible and I'm not all that old I'm a 90s kid but I was raised the right way I guess 🤷🏼♂️
It was common practice in the 60's to stick a match to the glue immediately after pressing the patch down into it. We let the fire burn about 5 seconds before blowing it out and presto ...tube ready to use. We didn't invent the technique ...the instructions said to do it. Today people would burn their inner tube up and start a fire and sue the inner tube company. Some idiot will probably do it after reading my comment and sue me.
Excellent information! I’ve had the same exact experience as you with the the Walmart and grocery store kits.I followed your instructions with the Monkey Grip brand it it worked the first time. Thank goodness because I was out on a trail, in the middle of nowhere and no spare tube.
normally it works a bit better if you let the cement dry a little longer like say 3 or 4 minutes. also the bond it makes is almost instant all you need to do is apply pressure for say a few seconds i usually use a small hammer. but good video.
Im not saying this video is bad, per se, although leaving air in the tube was a missed step. I am in utter shock that this is the first video in google.
You had me a bit concerned for a while when you had the blue side out. I was doing my wheel barrel tube and did the blue side in. My patch kit is a 32 piece VICTOR tire and ribber patch kit from the local hardware store for under $3. I am sure I will need the rest of the patches because the tires on the wheel barrel are not much thicker than the tubes.
I was wondering about Wally world brand tube repair kits, I'll look for the MG repair kit, it's probably no longer made especially if it works good. I think I'd use rubber gloves to spread that glue around. Wonder if the patch is still holding 8 year later, maybe it's time to update a newer video.

Not sure if it's improper technique, or the actual material that I'm working with.. I've attempted to patch my son's dirtbike tube about 5 times now.. I've used various brands of patches, however I've not used the brand of your choice as of yet.. I have a bunch of patches made by Slime and another set picked up from a local bicycle shop not sure of the brand, but German made.. Anyhow, no success.. Wondering if the hole is to large.. It's about half the size of a pencil eraser.. Also, the tube was previously filled with slime.. This could be a problem as well with the adhesion process.. Although, I've cleaned thoroughly before every patch application.. No matter what, come time to air the thing up it always either blows off the patch or air seeps beyond the patch.. Talk about frustrating ! I just threw in the towel this afternoon and spent $15 bucks on a new tube..
Vdubin64 I found that if the tubes ever been filled with slime I can never get the patches too stick for very long and that does sound like a sizable hole probably too big as well usually on dirt bike and motorcycle tubes if it won't hold air I usually just replace them because it's not fun when the tube suddenly loses Air at full speed been there done that

Each and every time trying something different.. Anyway.. I'll definitely not give up.. I'll keep a patch kit on hand in case of an emergency ! I as well think that the Slime alone was a key player.. I even bought some super expensive tire shop vulcanizing adhesive.. Thinking that the little tubes of glue included with the patches were not the highest of quality.. Anyway.. Total fail !
i added slime to my bicycle tube, cuz, i had extra from my leaky mag motorcycle rear wheel.. patched, put back on bike 3xs slime ruins the tube! no more slime in my trek, harley is still holding up though. I pull valve out, after i find and mark my leak. close in vise a few minutes. BAMMO!
It's not supposed to stay on there that blue layer is just a piece of plastic that they adhere the rubber to in production once it's put on the tube that blue layer can come off
mr random if you did it right it's a permanent repair. That being said if it has slime in it or a tire sealant of a liquid form good luck getting the patch to stick I have never been able to get one too successfully work when there's liquid type patch in the tube
Its a joke, sometimes that cement stuff can have fumes that are horrible for you and you can get high, i dont do it cause it kills you brain cells. I LOVE your videos though.
Never use your finger to find any kind of pressurized leak, especially an air leak even at low pressure. It only takes 30 psi to puncture your skin. If you start using this bad habit, it will carry over to another day on a tube or a tire that may be at alot higher pressure. If air enters your bloodstream, you are finished. Always use a safer method such as a squirt bottle of soapy water.

Rounding the patch will make it less likely to lift. Also pull out the tire stem and flatten the tire so it doesn't push on the patch.

Something isn't right here. At 9:00 you can clearly see the blue layer separates from the patch. I would be wanting to know why that is.
