Old School Vulcanizing Tire Patch

I know, I know; I forgot to rough-up the surface of the tube with a wire brush before I applied the patch. Sue me.

    Just don't forget to sprinkle some baby powder on there before you put the tube back in the tire, otherwise som' bitch hard to pull out next time.

    Thank God for this video. I found one of these in a horse barn on my property a back and I was completely stumped, partly being because it's unbranded and looks as if it is meant to attach on the end of a pipe? But mostly because I'm 24 and didn't know such existed until now. Either way, my bike days are over as far as I'm concerned but what a neat contraption, would've loved to have had this knowledge over a decade ago!

    Good to see someone still knows how to really patch a tire. Where can I get a supply of that kind of patch? I search with the word "vulcanize" and while they throw that word around a lot, everything I find is for a cold patch that only works if you get lucky.

    I used these in 1966 and wondered if they still exist? I had two kids who lived behind me and their bikes had flats and the dad had no clue. The tubes were bad and I replaced the tubes and it took me three months to get the $20 back.

  • @vhfgamer
    @vhfgamer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not all of us kids are that lame. I'm a millennial and I was patching tubes when I was a kid. And I've got a motorcycle tube outside with a patch curing as we speak.

    These were great... as long as kept dry they would last for until you needed one again... The problem I have with the new cold patches is tge glue.. Use it once, then next time the glue has gone rubbery...

    • @TheFarmerfitz
      @TheFarmerfitz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fine if you live in town, but if you live 20+ miles from town it's a problem.. If I have to drive to town just for the glue, I might as well take the tube along and have it fixed at a tires shop. ..lol

    Like the comments. Trouble with kids these days is how can you use an ipad to fix a flat. Where do you get the patches. I googled them and all I got was your video.

      We did the same thing fixing our bicycle tires early 70's at the local Amoco station. Owned by a guy we called "Hacksaw" . His was a vise-type thing that when you pulled down the handle, it locked the tube and patch between a metal grate and rubber pad. Great memories indeed.

      The new patches work better if you apply intense heat with a torch lighter after you're done applying the patch to the tube.

    Yes! I was right there with you with those, my dad still had the clamp in his shop, well at least until I go home to visit lol. The lame kids all grew up to whine about an open can of mineral spirits, just saying.

  • @ransomprigg1047
    @ransomprigg1047 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like how you leave an open can of mineral spirits a foot away from a 70 year old flaming vulcanizer. And kids these days are dumb asses. It would have been perfect if the can burst into flames.

    What did you use that was flammable on the patch. I used the rubber cement,but I didn't see you put any on.

    • @drbarchitect
      @drbarchitect 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Stuart you don’t use cement on these patched. The “flammable” material is some sort of fiber laced with an accelerant, probably a mix of magnesium and 365 other things that could cause you to grow a third eye. You bent a corner up to create a wick then light it. Nothing else needed.

  • @tsschoolman
    @tsschoolman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those were the best! The crappy glue on patches sold in the US come from China while the Chinese use these to patch inner tubes and raff at us.

  • @p3tr0114

    The reason the vulcanizing patches were taken off the market is that they were exploding and people were getting their eyes taken out. Or so my friend's dad tells me. ;) The reason no one knows how to fix a puncture nowadays is because you can't. The modern patch kits are designed only as a temporary solution and for only the smallest of punctures, so they are not suitable for about 95% of punctures. There are complicated modern solutions for punctures like tubeless tires...

    I had a front wheel flat on my BSA 650 in the middle of nowhere, coming back from Iran to Europe in 1962, and a truck driver stopped to help. He rummaged in the truck's toolbox, and came back with a hot patch, but no clamp. He put the tube on a flat rock, placed a patch over the puncture, lit it, and stuck his boot firmly on top of it. Thick smoke spurted out from under his boot, while he grinned at me in a "This is how it's done" sort of way. Suddenly the smoke turned to flames, he gave a loud scream, pulled off the now flaming boot, hurled it away into the sand, and jumped up and down holding his foot while trying to pull off a partly melted sock. I didn't dare laugh. Eventually, he gathered up his sock and boot, turned abruptly, walked back to his truck, got in and drove off without saying a single word. Luckily, eventually someone came along with patches and glue and helped me fix it.
