    You did it again Kenny, simple yet very effective way of enhancing the drums. In the past I've used some specific VST's to do this with less control. You're showing us how to cook the sauce, instead of buying already made. Thanks

    I have to take a moment to just thank you 1,000 times! Seriously, you have completely helped bring my music to life in the ways I have always dreamed of. Your tutorials are straight forward and definitely helps us get our money's worth of owning the Reaper DAW. At the end of the day, words can't show my appreciation enough!

    I love this! You can shape the sound of the Crush Buss even further by adjusting the send levels kick, snare, etc. 🤘

    This is so great. Who needs paid plug-ins you are basically renting because of their fancy graphics?
    Reaper pretty much does it all.

    @PASHKULI 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Maybe individual send levels' adjustments would have made more balanced compressoring.
    Now the Room track seems to carry the "better" sound, because it gets compressored and louder, bringing up room space in volume.

    • @MonkeyBars1
      @MonkeyBars1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah was thinking about this too - the A/B is not of much use here.
      Is anyone aware of some loudness measuring plugins to match busses' perceived volume automagically?

    • @J77199

      @@MonkeyBars1 if you can't hear the difference in this case, even without compensating for loudness, spend more time training your ears.

    Great way to enhance drums!
    Edit: Just tested this on a few tracks of mine made with Superior Drummer, it really makes the drums stands out with a vibrant and more natural sound. Just in a matter of a few minutes. Awesome!

    Kenny, you absolutely crushed it in this video!🥁👌Good to hear from you and thanks for the Friday tip. What did you think of the A-Strings? Also a longtime user of Toontrack and going to watch Rikk's video next. Excited for new features in EZ Drummer and will absolutely be experimenting and applying it to REAPER's Drum Crush Buss later this week. So much good stuff right now for us home studio nerds!! I have done more in these last 2 years than ever before in my 57 years obsessed with home recording.

    I surely like that technique! One of the reasons for me to use it is to bring some extra room sound into the entire mix. It's like you're hearing a crushing drums right beside you. It totally brings more energy to the mix. This "two plugins technique" is excellent!

    This is similar to Greg Scott crushing the hell out of the drums in parralell.
    And Made on Tape does it with 7 tape bounces crushes it and then blends the two.
    I've learned this from my 3 favorite channels...in different ways!
    The end sounds very 80's slick club hit.

    Excellent idea Kenny ... I am using only a compressor ... the limited did the huge difference ... also I heard reverb in the parallel compression bus ... yes the compression tends to bring up the lower levels so it made it more intense ... in my setup I use the reverb separately from the parallel compression ...

    Bringing up the crush alone raises the global volume. Ear candy. Other than manually, how could we reduce drums at the same time to get a mix knob wet/dry effect?

  • @BillGraper
    @BillGraper 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another thing you can do is change each individual drum sound's amount it's getting from the bus. I thought the snare had too much reverb sound from the compression (just me) so I would've gone to the routing of the bus & slightly lowered the snare. Just another option. This is really nice!

    Hi Kenny, I have a question: when I work on a project in reaper and assign right channel and left channel to different instruments, everything goes fine and when I listen to it from reaper itself, everything sounds fine. However, when I render it, inexplicably, the audio of the channels is inverted: the sound of the right channel is heard in the left channel and vice versa. Why is that? Thank you very much for your always wise advice, Kenny.

    The drums definitely hit much harder and are bigger with the crush buss mixed in. In a modern-style song this technique would make all kinds of sense. For me, though, with the style of the song (i.e. harkening back to the style of the 50s), I actually feel like the sound without the crush buss sounds more appropriate. But that's just my style choice, not my way of saying they sound better without the crush. I guess what I am saying is that to me the drums ended up sounding too powerful for the song but I love the technique, regardless.

    Crushed dynamics often makes a mess of the hi hat as I think is happening here. It’s doing great things to the rest of the kit but it’s tough to pull a loud hat out of the mics enough to avoid this.

    • @greggefell3867
      @greggefell3867 ปีที่แล้ว

      True - you could always not route the hi hat to the crush bus, or turn down its send to the crush bus to avoid that washyness. It can make the cymbals do odd things too.
