    Good video about the oil kings, very interesting that about not getting a consistent lube job, I was interested in them for that reason for my first keyboard. One thing I will say though, during your A/B tests, because you hold the single switch differently for some switches it completely throws off what the switches actually sound like. For example, the Creams you held with your fingers instead of in your hand like you did the other switches and it completely changed how they would sound. I'd suggest doing those single switch tests all on the desk to get a consistent sound profile for each switch.

    Hey great video! The editing is really nice. One thing though for some constructive criticism your audio seems to be off-sync with the video at some points in the video when you are talking and it looks kind of weird. This might be because your audio records at a different framerate than your video if you don't use the audio from your camera.
    Or you are just doing voiceover for the video.
    Anyways great video I enjoyed it very much!

      Thanks so much!! I have other people mentioning the same issue; I’m not sure what’s going on but it might be I need to work on my j cuts more, haha! I wonder if it might have something to do with my rendering setting because my audio is recording in 48, but I am rendering in I believe 32 bit AAC because when I rendered in 24 I was getting weird clicks and artifacts. I’ll dig deeper into my settings to see what’s going on! Thanks so much again for the feedback! :D

    I appreciated the linears comparison in the video. Also thanks for commenting on the difference in quality regarding the factory lube job.

      Thanks for the feedback! I’ll continue including a comparison moving forward :) also I noticed on a second watch-through that JWICKs in particular sounded a little rattly, kind of like the creams before I held the bottom housing for the sound test. Moving forward I’m going to hold the bottom housing on each switch for better consistency!

    I bought a 90 pack of mystery switches on Novelkeys for $15 and got Oil Kings. Feels like I hit the jackpot as I have just started to get into this hobby, and have only really use Akko matcha greens and kailh box blacks. I also used cherry mx blues and will soon have box jades. Can’t wait to try these and my jaded or my matchas in the zoom 75 I’m getting delivered in august.

    Uhhhhh is it just me or do these sound... not great? Like theramingoat said, the return from bottom out sound is super lackluster, and the ink v2s are still considerably deeper. I was under the impression that these were meant to emulate the sound signature of the black inks to an extent

    6:30 WTF how do your oil kings sound so bad?
    So high pitched, sharp, bright and clicky... like unlubed mx black on aluminium without foam or tape...
    I'm using oil kings in my Odin R3 with alu plate right now and they're much more muted and deeper in sound!
    And yes, my batch of switches was very consistently lubed (got them a few weeks ago)... maybe they've adjusted/improved their lubing process in the factory last year?

  • @raggedclawstarcraft6562
    @raggedclawstarcraft6562 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just ordered 130 of them. Why? Is it because they're quiet? Or decently quiet? Or is it because they're 55 grams? Which should be or should not be enough for me? Nope. I've ordered them because they're black lmao. The only reason. How silly of me xD

    Bought a test board with 35 different Gateron switches. Oil king sounds and feels the best out of all of them stock. Super smooth, great weighting, deep marbly sound. Didn't open them up, but by ear I didn't noticed much lubing inconsistency. I use them stock for my Keychron Q2 Pro, occasionally switching between them and slightly lubed Box Black Inks. Two of my favorites!

    Subbed, and i dont know the out of sync problems everyone talks about. For me its good, the only problem i had were frame rate issues with the camera recordings and maybe the mic being too sensitive because i can hear your breathing over the switch sounds 😅 very good video production tho

  • @sgist7824
    @sgist7824 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you. So do the oil kings feel smoother than black in when typing? I want smooth, quiet and ideally very little bottom out. I currently like silent alpacas and silent blacks but I only have testers of those .

    i am lubing mine right now and i also am noticing some that have soooo much lube in them. for a switch that is aimed at the higher end community, i wish it was just unlubed.

    • @MakerMods

      Totally agree!!! They’d be a lot more desirable I think if they had an unlubed option :/

    I just bought some Oil Kings and the lube from the factory was super thick. So thick, some keys actually made a squishing sound when I pressed them. I ended up bag lubing all the stems and springs now they sound and feel amazing. I didn't remove the lube on the bottom housing rails, just bag lubing the stems seemed to fix it.

      I don't think so, unless you rely heavily on PE and Tape mod. The switch itself sounded deep and muted kinda like Ink Black.

    great review ! I have just one issue, does the keycap hit the bottom when pressing on your 1 switch tester ? I felt like I heard it tick every time you pressed and it took away from the switches. Otherwise this was a great video, thank you :)

    • @MakerMods
      @MakerMods  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback! I feel like the integrated plate on the switch tester is a little loose, so it does make a rattling sound. Moving forward I’m going to make sure I hold the bottom of each switch like I did on the creams!

    Would you say that the Oil Kings are lighter or softer than Ink Blacks? I have and love Ink Blacks, but I'm looking to see if there is a switch that is as similar to Ink Blacks in terms of smoothness and overall feel, but with a little less pressure on the hands for longer typing sessions.

    • @MakerMods
      @MakerMods  ปีที่แล้ว

      if possible, I'd recommend spring swapping the inks rather than buying a whole new switch! It'd be quite a bit cheaper, but you would have to open up the switches to spring swap :D

    Im planning to buy these switches, does the opaque housing not allow lights towards the keycaps? Or is it a non-issue?

    • @MakerMods
      @MakerMods  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say there is very little difference among switches with led cutouts unless you're dealing with a totally transparent switch top like aqua kings or something of that nature, especially if you're using non-shine through or crystal keycaps!

      Unless you planning to mod your switches and like RGB then Tangerines would be better.

    When you did the sound test on the single switches, the placement of the switch on your palm might have made a lot more difference than the switches themselves. One had a very open sound when you hold them up with two fingers and the other had a very thoccy sound when it lays flat on your palm

    • @MakerMods
      @MakerMods  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interesting!! I’ve since decided in my most recent video that it’s probably better to do the single switch sound tests on the keyboard for a better idea of what it’ll sound like in an actual build!

    This video is extremely well mad and is very informative. Well done on this one. I was looking at black inks earlier (with no intentions of ever buying them as jwk is just as good if not better then the black inks) and happened to stumble on this video. I may consider copping these instead!

      @MakerMods  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m glad I could help! I have been thinking about the value proposition of these switches since I posted my review and I think although the sound may not come through perfectly, these are a little deeper than JWK’s. Both are great switches though and I haven’t tried the full opaque JWICKs to see if that would lead to a deeper sound signature as well. Thanks so much for the kind words! :D

    If I put these switches on a board with rgb lighting, will I be able to see the lights?

    • @MakerMods

      Pretty much all switches will allow light to be visible between keycaps, but it will be pretty dim unless you are using pudding/crystal keycaps!
